Got dumplings of all kinds, manti, chebureki and samsa. Their kompot was probably the best tasting kompot of all the kompots across brighton beach. I felt chebureki were the best out of the 3, only downside to the food is that the filling is more onions than meat. It was nice and quiet, only 1 guy working. read more

We have been meaning to try Uyghur food for a while. Looks like Brooklyn has a bunch of restaurants. Kashkar is a cute place. Compact, but has some panache. We added the Bosu Laghman after checking with the person attending and lamb soup. Both were quite good. The pulled noodles, being what they are, may feel a bit chewy, but we realize that is the idea. Wow. Just... wow. I've been searching for authentic Uyghur food like a desert nomad craves an oasis, and folks, I've found my culinary Shangri-La. This isn't just good; it's so good it makes me question every life choice I've made up until this point that didn't involve eating here. Let's talk fried manty. These aren't just dumplings; they're crispy, savory pockets of pure joy. I'm pretty sure angels sing when you bite into them. And the langman soup? It's like a warm, comforting hug from a kindly Uyghur grandmother who also happens to be a Michelin-starred chef. The noodles are perfect, the broth is rich, and I'm convinced it has magical healing properties. My only complaint is that I couldn't swim in it. Yet. The service is what I'd call "charmingly efficient." There's literally one waiter, who I suspect is also the owner, the busboy, and possibly moonlights as a secret agent. Despite being a one-man show, he's faster than a gazelle on a caffeine rush and surprisingly delightful. You'll feel like you're eating at your cool aunt's house - if your cool aunt ran a killer restaurant. The atmosphere is pure neighborhood gem - casual, unpretentious, and exactly what you want when you're about to dive face-first into a plate of deliciousness. Don't expect white tablecloths; expect to be incredibly comfortable and ready to get down to business with your chopsticks. Just a heads-up: they prefer cash, probably because their credit card machine is still trying to process how much flavor they're serving up. But they do take cards, so don't sweat it. In summary, if you're looking for an authentic Uyghur experience that will make your taste buds do a happy dance and your stomach sing praises, run, don't walk, to this place. Ate at one of the few Uyghur restaurants in NYC with friends last night in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Think of it as a hybrid between Uzbeki and Chinese, but 100% halal. Service was fantastic. Got free street parking right there immediately. Total cost $135 including tax and tip. Note: they don't write down that there is a service charge included in the total or that there's a cash discount; I had to ask. My friends and I were hanging out in Brighton Beach to check out some Eastern European spots. I've never tried Uyghur cuisine before, so this was a new experience. They offer a variety of dishes here ranging from soups, noodles, kebabs, and more. The food is unique, and I thought all our dishes were good and flavorful. I particularly enjoyed the manti and lagman noodles. I will say the portions are a bit small for the price. I also felt that service was a bit slow, granted the restaurant was busy at the time and there were 1-2 servers at a time. Several years back, I went to a Uyghur restaurant in Washington, DC. I recall it was very tasty, with great lamb flavor, very noodle based, but something not all that cheap. It was a unique experience that I was fortunate that I got to try, but at the time I thought nothing of it. I thought I would never have it again. Fast forward several years later, and here I am, in Brooklyn, NY. More specifically, southern Brooklyn, and in the Brighton Beach area. This is also known as Little Odessa because of the high concentration of Russians. In the last few decades though, Brighton Beach has changed and has now become more diverse. This restaurant is a result of that growing diversification. A little more than a hole in the wall not terribly far from the station that bears the neighborhood's name, this restaurant was an experience similar to the one I had years back. The noodle dishes tasted great, and were generous in portion. I really enjoyed the naan here, the bread has great texture and pairs well with the hot dishes. Through it all, I think I have found a new soup to add as one of my favorites, Lagman soup. Lagman soup is a soup that has plenty of earthy flavors, and some grainy ones. With some pieces of lamb, noodles, vegetables, and a hearty broth, this is the perfect soup for that cold day outside. It warms you up so fast, and is an absolute pleasure to eat. It also happens to be a popular dish in Uzbekistan, which is primarily the cuisine this restaurant brings about. It also has a bit of Turkish, and other Eastern European countries from the former Soviet bloc that I will not mention here for the sake of brevity. There was one thing I did not enjoy here. I know that Uzbek cuisine is known for its dumplings, and while they looked pretty, I felt they were wet, soggy, and a trip to the bathroom all in one. Manti, a popular dumpling, was one my server tried to steer me towards, but I ignored because of the onion inside them. Onions and I do not get along, but perhaps the surrounding flavors of this cuisine and the tastiness of lamb, prevalent in others, would allow us to call a temporary truce for at least one dish. I observed several people taking this as takeout, but I think it is better to eat this in a restaurant. The taste holds better, and is more pleasing to the eyeballs to eat this in a restaurant. Never mind the cleanliness of said restaurant. If memory serves me right, then I did right by this cuisine and this meal overall, regardless of whether it be in Washington, DC, Brooklyn, or more specifically, Brighton Beach. read more

Few joys have been jotted in my memory as deeply and happily as my visit to this unique restaurant. This is a beautiful homey Uyghur restaurant nestled in the hustle and bustle of Brighton Beach Ave. When you walk in and sit down, it's like being transported to someone's cozy decadently decorated drawing room in another world. Everything from the curtains, the vibrant printed fabric on the tables and the elaborate tea cups/china represents central Asian culture to the T. We started with some green tea and Naan, nibbling slowly and making our way to the center of the bread as we waited on our kababs - We ordered one of each type. Service was straightforward and simple, efficient without ant frills as is expected in a family restaurant. The tea tasted super fresh and came in an ornate tea pot with beautiful cups, and it was piping hot. The kababs came out sizzling hot with a side of tomato sauce. They were dripping in fatty goodness and perfectly grilled. The ground beef kabab is one of the juiciest things I have ever put in my mouth. The spices and flavors were perfectly balanced and not a single bite was dry or without juicy goodness. Lamb kebab was super tender, with lovely spices seared on to the pieces outside, a perfect bite and chew every time. Chicken kabab was super juicy, perfectly marinated and savory through and through. The real SHOWSTOPPER however, was the lamb rib kabab. This is easily one of the best things I've eaten in a REALLY long time. The kebab is a work of art, with tiny pieces of lamb ribs, perfectly skewered on, with equal amounts of fat and meat, cooked tender and the fat rendered perfectly. This was the most amazing skewer I've ever devoured, with spices and char on point and totally worth the wait. If you find yourself in little Uzbekistan, you HAVE to stop by this unique and amazing restaurant and try their food! 10/10 highly recommended!!! read more

Cafe Kashkar has been around for over two decades and there's a reason it's still operating! Authentic Uyghur food in the heart of Brighton Beach. We ordered soup, fried pulled hand noodles with beef, Manty (Uzbeki dumplings), kebabs and their famous bread. This restaurant is the true definition of comfort food. Really felt like a home cooked meal. Everything tasted immaculate. In terms of ambiance, this place will make you feel like you're in Central Asia. The decor and patterns in this establishment were very pleasing to eye. Lastly, service was decent - our waiter gave us recommendations and was extremely helpful, but at the end he definitely wanted us to check out. It was near closing time so understandable, but we felt a bit rushed as we were wrapping up. The owner and family/staff have been consistently kind and perfect hosts over the many years that I've been stopping by. Trust me, you will have an excellent and comforting meal here, especially when it is cold outside. The food is halal, and anyone can and does eat here. The menu is meat heavy, lots of lamb and black seed (cumin), manti, chebureki, kebab, samsa, Korean salad, and the star: thick lagman noodles (the OG of spaghetti before Marco Polo brought it back to Italy). Note that you may find little crescent moons of black cardamom shell in your meal, which is normal and is not some mistake or wood shaving. Just put it to the side. It is contributing to that great taste in the sauce. Interesting back story here, the cuisine is from XinJiang Autonomous Region, where the Muslim minority is horribly persecuted by the Chinese government with human rights violations that the world choses to effectively ignore. Coincidentally located, of course, in an oil rich and resource rich area. The cooks were on their A game last night and knocked it out of the park with a simple meal of a plate of small samsa and tea. Take a bite of a samsa and pour a tiny bit of the tomato based condiment inside to eat it like a sauce filled dumpling. Sit outside on the plastic chairs if you have just come from the beach, it's an excellent post beach meal to warm you up after swimming! read more

My friend and I take turns selecting ethnic food restaurants to try each month. This month I chose Cafe Kashkar for one of our destinations. (Since we drove nearly 2 hours, we had to try a couple places) In today's political climate, it felt right to support a Uyghur restaurant. The restaurant is cozy with a traditional decor. The waitress was pleasant and the food was served in a timely fashion. We selected two types of Samsa, both were quite good but perhaps the ones that pull apart were slightly more tender. They (and everything else) were great with the homemade hot sauce that was in the table. We had a plate of pickled vegetables, both the pickled cucumber and green tomato were quite good, a nice counterpoint to the other dishes. We moved on to Manti, which like the Samsa was filled with lamb. The Manti are great, full of flavor and juicy with a nice texture to the dumpling itself. We ended with the lagman with lamb, for me it was the highlight. The hand pulled noodles had fabulous texture and flavor. They took on the deeply flavorful sauce really nicely. The lamb in the dish was tender and perfectly cooked. All in all, a great meal. We would certainly return. read more

First off, we've been going to Kashkar for my son's birthday every year for the past 10+ years, and my review for every year up to this one would be five stars. Food is great, unique, and worth the trip. But this year's visit four days ago was a complete disaster, ending in us giving up on ever being served after patiently sitting at our table for 25 minutes, and occasionally informing the waiter that we were ready to order, only to be ignored every time. We got there around 7:15pm and it was pretty busy, but there was one open table. While we were standing and waiting for them to clean it from the previous diners, someone at another table warned us that they were out of several things, but whatever, we love this place. We'd work around any omissions. We were given menus, and that was the last time they ever acknowledged our existence. While we waited, two women who arrived later than us were seated, given menus, and had their orders taken. Increasingly exasperated, we told the waiter that we'd arrived before them and had been waiting to order. He looked at us with a blank expression and then moved on. After waiting another 10 minutes, we flagged the waiter down yet again, said we had been waiting for 25 minutes, and asked him to please take our order. He once again looked blankly at us, said nothing, and then turned around to go do other things, at which point we got up and walked out. I'm giving Kashkar two stars because while they deserved zero stars for how we were treated on this visit, I'm hoping that this was just a new and untrained waiter doing the worst job he will ever do and they will be back to their five star form soon. read more

Went to this cozy Uyghur restaurant in the Russian neighborhood of Brighton Beach. Right away, it felt like someone's home. It was a busy night there but we were seated in 10 minutes. We ordered manti, lagman, kebab, carrot salad, and bechbarmok. We enjoyed everything that was served to us especially the lagman (must get), the carrot salad and the kebab. The Fried Dumplings were more like Fried Bao, but also amazing & the Fried Noodles had a unique texture and amazing smell. All the food looks exactly as shown on the menu. The food was delicious. The lamb does not taste gamey. The food seems to have the same filling of lamb and onions but the tastes are total different. The tea was served in a decorative tea pot. I like the lamb noodle with eggs. It was not greasy at all and full of flavors. I took a star off because of the language barrier. This restaurant serves Uyghur food. The Uyghurs is a Chinese muslim ethnic group that inhabit a region near the border of Pakistan and northwest China. As such the food is Halal and has Chinese influences. I appreciated that the menu has pictures of each dish and even gives a little history of the region. I had the lamb lagman, lamb ribs, and manty. The food is good but I had better at another restaurant around the area. My favorite is the manty. It was delicious with a thin, slightly chewy skin, and soft grounded lamb and onions inside. The additional of sour cream enhances the flavors. The lamb ribs were too gamey and there wasn't much meat. It comes with various vegetables which I enjoyed aside from the peppers in a deliciously rich sauce. It would have been better if they de-stringed the green beans. Came back here after 3 years. Still solid, reminds me of home, and all is very flavorful. Lagman this time was slightly too salty. Ordered carrot salad (my favorite salad in general, hard to get in the US), lagman w/soup, lamb ribs shashlyk (kebab), naan, compot, green tea. Satisfying and filling. Reviewing this as an intro for those who are not familiar with this food. You need to be a meat eater (lamb mostly) to enjoy this. Lagman is a must have if you haven't had this before. You can get soup version or dry. Shashlyk is not your standard kebab, there is a marinade that makes the meat super tender. Get one or two salads to refresh, and hot tea is a must. We didn't order samsa (think samosa but baked with lamb or beef), but looked very good. I had it before, it was excellent. When entering, don't wait until seated, get server's attention straight away or go to where kitchen window is. Everyone was very nice to us. The place is used to customers from former Soviet, as such, be patient, as they are adapting to Yelp visitors :) I can't get home food like this just anywhere, unless I cook it, thus my review is based on this fact. There is better food back home, but that is a mute point. This is advertised as Uzbek-Uighur place, but can be generally considered Central Asian. Noted for its Uyghur-Uzbek focus, comparatively rare on the food scene, Kashkar is unpretentious, lightly stylized, and delivers big, big, big on flavor. I got the lagman with lamb and it was to die for! The noodles exemplified perfect pliability, chew, and length, the lamb was flavorful and tender without running into the weeds of being gamey or overbearing, the vegetables were fairly nondescript but they're not the star of the show so fuhgetaboutit, and the sauce was a Lebowski level of tying the room together. And the condiment options! Yee buddy! I'm a SUCKER for vinegar and I doused that thing like it was a five-alarm fire with the provided black vinegar, yum, yum, yum, funnel that stuff right into my GULLET. The compot was unfortunately a bit of a let-down when compared to the nearby offering at Skovorodka, but you know, you can't win em all and you're not here for the compot anyway. read more

Food: I ordered the gosht non, manti, cheburek, Bosu Lagman & fried potatoes. I could immediately tell that the food was very authentic and traditional. I specifically really like the noodles and highly recommend that you try them. The cheburek is excellent and is a must try with their red dipping sauce. This review is solely for my experience and opinion on the food I ordered from here. Firstly, this was my first time trying Uyghur cuisine. I ordered a Manty and Lamb Palo to go. Ordering to go was confusing because I had to walk to the back of the restaurant to where the kitchen is to find someone to take my order. Thankfully the menu has pictures and the food isn't pricey. My order of an appetizer and main dish was about $15+ change. I had assumed that Uyghur food would be similar to Afghan or Himalayan cuisine but it is not. The Lamb and rice dish I found to be greasy and tasteless, and the lamb was gamey tasting, also the Manty, the lamb dumplings were too gamey for my taste. I couldn't enjoy either of these dishes.
