Upscale dining options are very few in this area, so we were happy to discover this charming French restaurant in the Galleria Plaza. Owner/chef Dominique Christini's primary inspiration is the cuisine of Provence. The menu changes every two weeks. On the night we visited, we started with escargots and goat cheese in a pastry shell and an assortment of pates served with cornichons. My husband had a traditional onion soup followed by venison chops on a bed of red cabbage confit, and I had blue crab soup followed by sauteed medallions of veal lion in a mushroom sauce. For dessert we shared a Grand Mariner souffle. Everything was prepared perfectly and served elegantly. The wine steward suggested a bottle of Château Coudert St. Émilion Grand Cru would be an excellent complement to our entrees. At $38, it was one of the less expensive options. Dinner for two with tax and tip was $190, which is a lot higher than most people in this area (many of them retired seniors on fixed incomes) expect to pay for dinner. But Cafe Largo has been here for 18 years, so obviously people who appreciate fine dining are willing to eat here and pay for the quality they receive. You can purchase a gift certificate valued at $100 for only $80. If you buy four you get a fifth one free, so you get $500 worth of meals for only $320. Informal cooking classes are offered one Monday evening a month. After the meal is prepared, students and trhe chef enjoy it with a glass of wine. The cost is $37.50 per person. read more

We reluctantly agreed with my daughter when she chose Cafe Largo for her birthday dinner because she generally suggests the finest restaurant for any given night out. We brought her sister and her best buddy to join us both of which are seasoned foodies. I confess I was puzzled why I had missed this restaurant after living in Seminole for almost 8 years and having enjoyed many fine restaurants in Tampa, Sarasota, and Punta Gorda. Then I learned the reason. Cafe Largo had just been bought about a year ago by Yvonne and Emilio who presented us with a dinner from the fantastic appetizers to delightful desserts all of which were beyond our expectations. Yvonne recommended two outstanding wines and helped us select 4 different delectable entrees, finishing with frothy espressos and desserts almost too beautiful to eat. All four of us gave them five stars beginning with the careful preparation down to the final presentation of a stellar meal with unprecedented veggies created by Emilio. The food was outstanding. We started with the scallops which were cooked perfectly in a pistachio reduction sauce...Yummy! Next was fish for my wife and Chateaubriand for myself. The presentation, service and food was excellent. For desert a souffle that was out of this world. If you go save room for the souffle. The dinner concluded with a very pleasant conversation with the chef delighting in stories about his time cooking at the White Hall Club (just off Rush Street, Chicago) in the 70's, and reminiscing about long ago great Chicago chef's. p.s. The food is insanely good. My wife and I were looking for something different and spotted Cafe Largo on a local top 50 restaurant list. The Grand Marnier soufflé caught my eye as did multiple entrees. It was slightly difficult to find the location, it's tucked in a small plaza. I made reservations, but wasn't necessary for an ordinary Saturday night. We started with escargo which was unlike any we've ever had. There were not heavy, drowned in butter, but rather sauces that blended well. These "snails" had a great texture, unlike the little chewy ones you get at most places. We almost put in an order for them to-go. For our entrees, she ordered the lamb chops and I the chateaubriand. The chops were good, much larger than typical. For those worried about the gamey flavor of lamb, these have little. Unfortunately I found it hard to compare with my order of chateaubriand. The beef alone was unbelievable; the Bernaise sauce was just icing on the cake. The chef's version of medium rare is more of a rare which suited me perfectly. Of course we both ordered a soufflé - enormous, soft, and sensational. In addition to the above, I ordered Bordeux by the glass. Instead of bringing you glass of some unknown red, a bottle is opened at your table. It was quite good - well worth $9 each. The only unpleasantry were the chairs - uncomfortable, mainly because I felt like I might break it if I leaned back too much. Certainly a minor flaw. This was all forgotten when the chef comes out to see how everyone is doing - at least twice. We plan on returning in the very near future, there are a number of menu items on our must have list. read more

We moved to Florida two years ago and have been exploring the reataurant scene. We are die hard Francophiles and go there every year. This year will be Provence. It took some time, but we finally discovered this gem in Largo/Clearwater with a non- descript name, Cafe Largo. Chef Dominick is from Nice and his food reflects his Provencal roots. Everything is fresh and prepared with love and respect for the ingredients. His brother tends to the reasonable and well thought out, mostly French, wine list. He imports directly from Franch, impossible to get wines here in the states. I especially like his selection of hard to find cru beaugolais wines. Try one of their wine dinners. A different wine with every course and if you especially like one, you can buy some to take home. We will be there soon for Bastille Day to enjoy. read more

I don't live in this area but my wild guess is that you don't find many places like this down here. Despite us being the only patrons on a winter Tuesday evening, this place really delivered on ambience, service, and taste. I am guessing the reason no one else was there was because culturally, in this area, people just don't want to pony up some dough for a meal on a Tuesday night two days after Christmas. Perhaps people should indulge themselves more! I tried the shrimp and scallops flambe, the duck, and the young French hen. Everything was fantastic. Especially the hen. We had a great french wine recommended by our server that just hit the spot with the things we ordered. And they let us bring in our own bottle of Campari (a couple folks in my party like Campari on the rocks with this type of meal). Again despite the low attendance, this place has been in business since 1986, so they must be doing something right. I can imagine a healthy crowd on Saturday night during the spring. It was more of an experience, The food is organic, fresh, and cut and prepped in house. They serve French wines, French cheeses, bake their own breads. Delicious is too weak a word. Our group of 9 arranged to have a special birthday dinner at Cafe Largo, a favorite of our local host. The chef came up with a selection of hors d'oeuvres that we're fantastic. Escargot, scallops, foie gras and pate. I think we covered most of the entrees on the menu and everyone raved about it. Considering it was a group of foodies, it was quite a compliment. Every dish was unique and outstanding. The chef is a master of sauces and flavors. One person commented that it was the best salmon she had ever had. The beef dishes were melt in your mouth tender, as were the lamb and venison. The French wine was also very nice. It was all topped off with a specially made birthday dessert that was again delicious. The waitstaff were all very professional and kind, making it such a special night. I should mention that there were several French-speaking customers conversing in French with the staff, so truly a uniquely authentic experience. If you are looking for a memorable dining experience, I highly recommend Cafe Largo. read more

This was a very hard restaurant to find, hidden behind a shopping center. Once we found it, we were glad we did. The staff was professional and accommodating. The wine selection was good with several varietals. As for the meal, the diver scallops were amazing. I had the venison. The server said the chef recommended medium rare, but it arrived rare. That's not a problem for me, because that's how I like meat. I would have preferred a little less demi glace, but as a whole, it was very good. My sister had the grilled fish. She found the dish over-sauced and the caper wine sauce to be much too salty. The poached pear with sorbet was a wonderful finish to the meal. If I could give ten stars, I would. Every once in a while you find a chef that still has the passion and it shows. The staff was very knowledgeable, professional, and truly enjoyed what they do, and it only enhanced the evening. Everything is made in house, everything is fresh, everything is well seasoned....oh so good. I had stuffed quail with sweetbreads in a sauce with the most flavorful mushrooms. My husband had the seared foie gras with apples and a calvados reduction. We had the Chateaubriand with the best béarnaise I have had in years. I always laugh when people say that the meat cut like butter, well it did. From the meat to the vegetables all properly cooked and so flavorful, no afterthoughts on this plate. We placed our order for our Grand Marnier soufflé. It was one of the best souffle's I have ever had. Instead of a small pitcher of Grand Marnier to add, we were given a large bowl of zabaione infused with Grand Marnier. It was my two favorite desserts in one. Rarely, do you find a restaurant of this caliber that is so unpretentious. The prices are very reasonable, the portions are extremely generous, the quality of the food is consistent and hits every high note. I will remember this dinner for a very long time. read more

Friends wanted to take us to this place because "everything is wonderfu!". Didn't turn out that way. While the food was generally very good, their wine list was a mess and while staff new how to serve it they new little about wine. So little that the wines were listed by general region and price (very high prices). The two most important aspects, producer and vintage were nowhere on the list, requiring our capable waitress (who appeared to be serving both rooms herself) to drag out several bottles just for me to recognize a producer (in this case Chapoutier) so I could have an idea what I was getting for such lofty prices! Most ridiculous was a wine listed as "Clos Vougeot" at $425. As it's the largest of burgundy's gran crus, vintage and producer are essential to know and regardless reflect a silly markup. Considering the fairly expensive dinner tab, far better options available within a 5-10 mile radius. read more

Every time I visit the area (about 2-3 times a year), I come to Café Large. Horrible name. Amazing food. As good as any of the good French restaurants in NYC. Classic French - with a touch of Florida. I do not know which starter is my favorite - the fois gras or the scallops. Both are delicious. And I always try a different entrée and have never been disappointed. My only comment - if you eat here when it is really busy (Christmas Eve or some other popular date), it always seems as though the wait staff have a bit of a dear-in-the-headlights look. But the staff is friendly and helpful and the food is fantastic Dress decently but jacket and tie not required. read more

I live in New Tampa and I drive to this place whenever I get the opportunity. The food is EXCELLENT. It is well cooked, well seasoned and perfection. I have had the lamb and the steak, both of which are excellent and are made to order. The portions are sized perfectly, leaving you full without having that ''stuffed'' feeling. This gem is tucked away within a small plaza that you would likely drive past without thinking twice. However, my dear friend that would be a terrible mistake! The inside of restaurant is immaculate and the servers are always aware and seem to appear out of nowhere just when you need a refill on a glass of wine or water. I cannot emphasize enough however, the taste of the food here. They have many accolades along their walls that show how award winning the food is, and the head chef there is very accommodating, as I went with someone who is a vegetarian (they loved their food as well btw). If you ever find yourself across the Howard Franklin Bridge and you want to go to a restaurant that has excellent food, service, and atmosphere. I recommend you go to Café Largo. We dined here last night and we were very excited based on the reviews. Well, once we got to the restaurant we were not even greeted by a host. We were sat by the waitress. We enjoyed a nice bottle of wine as we looked at the menu. Let me remind you that this place is not cheap. We ordered the scallop appetizer which was quite tasty. I decided to go wIth the fish special which was explained to me similar to a flounder and my husband had the duck. The fish had no price and was listed as the market price. All the entrees ranged from $20 ish to $38.95. Once our dinner came out I felt my entree could have been hotter. But no big deal. Then I noticed there was not one bus server assisting the waitress. My table was not cleaned before our entrees came out and I often could not find a server (as I only saw one other women working) or a bus server to answer any questions. Once the bill came, they charged $55 for the fish entree. I couldn't believe it. I almost fell over. $55 for a fish similar to "flounder." Not only was the actual entree in my opinion not worth $55 but the experience was not worth that. Like I said, there was not one bus server, no one cleaned our area before our entrees came, and there was no host upon arrival...oh and when we left no one said goodbye or should I say au revoir. So point is, I spent $200 on a dinner that was just not worth it. If I am going to spend $55 on an entree I expect way more. I feel they have some nerve charging these prices in an establishment that is not properly staffed. Overall I give this place 2 stars and will not be back. read more

We went for the Christmas Eve three-course meal (at $70/person). There were significant upcharges for any hors d'oevres ($10-$20) except for a meager, small salad. The main course (beef) was small portion and slathered in sauce that had no taste with some boiled vegetables. The dessert, Buche de Noel, tasted like Sara Lee cake that I could get from my supermarket freezer. It was the second time we were quite disappointed in the meals at this restaurant, which used to have an excellent reputation. read more

For my "aging birthday" we decided to come here due to a relative recomending it. It looks like about three office suites converted into a restaurant, but the food doesn't. Fine appetisers, and unbelieveable main courses came out of this place. The food here was probably the most fine fresh food I have ever had. The chef even cut the fresh meat in front of us which was impressing! The only problem I had was I didn't like the sauce on the plate but that's my fault, not the chef's!
