We arrived at Lola's on a Sunday afternoon, looking for lunch. Wow, did we find a great lunch! Well, it was actually brunch but it was wonderful. Having spent a long weekend in Johnson City, we were thrilled to end our visit with such wonderful food as Johnson City seems to be a magnet for chain establishments. Lola's is located in a sort of strip shopping center. While there were lots of choices, all that I can remember is what I ate. It was a play on a Monte Christo, The sandwich included tasty thin sliced ham, Gruyere cheese and a cheese sauce all layered on thick sour dough bread then coated and grilled to perfection. The finishing touch was a fried egg on top. This dish was lick the plate good! My husband ordered a cheese and bacon omelet with the roasted potatoes. They too were excellent and not a crumb remained on either plate. I wish we had a chance to have dinner there! Next visit, Lola's will be on top of our list. read more

I discovered Cafe Lola shortly after it opened and I moved to Johnson City. I was really pleasantly surprised to find an intimate yet slightly upscale independently owned restaurant in JC. The couple that opened Cafe Lola relocated from NYC and really have an eye for the small details that make for a quality meal and enjoyable dining experience. They are very enthusiastic about using quality local ingredients in the seasonal menu. What really got me excited is that they have wine pairings and flights of wine you can order and they are constantly rotating them. The bartenders that I have had have been really knowledgeable about wine and enthusiastic about sharing new favorites they have discovered. I really rave about the chef which I believe has been there for most of the time the restaurant has been open. My favorite dinner dish is the Miso glazed Sea Bass -- it is really very special. The homemade Lasagna is also really amazing. I enjoy their appetizers like the cheese plate or warm brie .. but also the Herb Cashews are really great. I also love Sunday brunch. A mimosa with a breakfast Panini or mexican taco are favorites. I am thankful for a few very unique gems in JC which make dining special. I consider Lola to be one of my favorites and it is always nice to visit an old friend. read more

I really want to like Cafe Lola but after 3 visits in the past 6 weeks I've come to the conclusion that "we're really busy" is the excuse for bad service and food either delivered cold or not prepared as ordered. If neither of these are issues to you then you'll like it more than I have come too. It's too bad because they have a great menu, and an equally interesting atmosphere. The staff seems to be a group of regulars that should know how to deliver good to great service but seemingly don't seem to care as the service is very fluid. One tip, if you go for brunch and order steak and eggs, order both over easy and rare as the cook only seems to know over well and we'll done. read more

OMG just had a wonderful dining experience. Taylor our server was excellent very attentive. I took the wine tour wines were great. Michelle the chef knows how to cook. My husband had the filet and I had the beef bourguigoon and both were delicious. We ended our meals with a crème brûlée and the butter cake. Delicious as well! Our party of four ate here on a Saturday and we had reservations. Drink selection was very good...lots of fun drinks to try from their list. Food selection was varied...we shared the brie appetizer and it was very good. We also had the lasagna (very good), ahi tuna (very good), pork shank (very soft), and filet (well prepared to order). I was in town for work and decided to eat at this place based on the reviews. I got there just as it opened and didn't really want anything too fancy, so I ordered the chicken panini and mashed potatoes. I wasn't too impressed, but I might've ordered something that they don't really specialize in. The chicken in the panini was well-cooked and seasoned, but I just wasn't a fan of the chicken on a sandwich. I ended up taking it apart, eating the chicken, and the mashed potatoes which were the chunky kind(slightly watery). Would I eat here again? If I was in this town again, probably, I want to try their pasta. read more

I have been heavily weighing the pros and cons of posting this review. Having been to this restaurant many times with fond memories and having tasted incredible dishes, I am sad to say I have seen a decline in the food over the last several visits spread out over a year. Starting with the positives, the wait staff was superb, very friendly and appropriately attentive. The pink martini flight was delicious and well crafted. The cheese tray was also good. Both my husband and I chose the Filet Au Poive. The positives, the steak was a perfectly cooked medium rare as ordered. Unfortunately the filet was so over seasoned being completely encrusted in crushed peppercorns and heavy amounts of salt that it was hard to eat. Once the overly seasoned sear was completely cut off I was able to eat the remainder of the filet. It was still saltier than it should have been but was at least edible. The green beans were fresh, but bland. The mashed potatoes had an odd flavor as if they were scalded or like scorched milk. My husband's potatoes did not have the same odd flavor. It was not a pleasant taste at all. The actual Au poive sauce under the steak was delicious so I used this to help the green beans out. We opted to have a dessert, our usual the chocolate soufflé. The taste was very good, but it was unfortunately undercooked. The wine list offerings have been slipping for a little while but the food has always been our main draw. I just expect more for a $120 dinner for 2. This restaurant use to rise to the food expectation for the price point. Sadly, I can no longer say that this is the case, after years of patronage, I doubt we will be returning. I give 3 stars for the great cocktails, splendid wait staff, and the perfect cook on the overly seasoned filet. read more

FABULOUS experience at Cafe Lola!!! My sister-in-law (the bride) and I recently planned her 1920's themed bachelorette party at this restaurant. The style and decor of the restaurant matched our theme perfectly! Since I live in Pittsburgh, I communicated with the staff, including the wonderful Vita, over the phone and via email. I considered reserving the entire Martini Room, but since that required a minimum spend of $500 (I believe, also dependent upon time of year), we decided instead to just reserve a large table. The table was set up for us when we arrived right on time. Even though other folks were in the Martini Room with us, it still felt very private. Not only was the food delicious - I personally ordered the Smoked Mozzarella Ravioli **yummm** - but I had asked Vita if she would be willing to make two different custom cocktails for us. I requested the Mary Pickford (white rum, pineapple juice, maraschino liqueur and grenadine) and The Bee's Knees (gin, honey, and lemon), and both drinks were a huge hit with the ladies. From beginning to end - even as our waitress walked outside with us to take a group picture - the bachelorette party at Cafe Lola was a huge success. Savanna was our server tonight for our group of friends. She was extremely accommodating on our first night off together in weeks, and I cannot explain what a great time we had! The meal was amazing, with a combination of many of their appetizers as well as dinner, and desserts. She personally made the cocktails and the other servers in the restaurant (per usual) helped to make the night even more enjoyable by helping out to make sure everyone in the establishment was taken care of. My wife and I placed them on our list of places to try when we moved to the area earlier this year. Because of the Veteran's Day holiday, I called to verify the hours and was told they would be serving dinner until 9:30 & bar appetizers & desserts available a bit later. We arrived about 8:30pm to a sign on the door stating that the facility was rented out for a private party. I can't imagine why they would fail to mention this when I had called between 4 & 5pm. Frustrating! We were excited to give them a try, but I can't say that we will now. It's disrespectful to customers to withhold information like 'we are open for dinner until 9:30 but you won't be able to dine here tonight since we have rented the dining room for a private party.' The menu looked awesome. It just wasn't available to us that night. I hope your experience is better than ours. read more
