The restaurant is no longer open. I was looking forward to a pasta dish I had read about and I was sorely disappointed.

Everything was perfect. The food. The service. The table. Everything. I eat dinner early, so I arrived, without reservations, around 5:00. I was seated immediately and was well attended to. The chicken and rice were cooked to perfection. The ambience is elegant French but not too in your face about it. I'd say it's classy. I had made a reservation through Open Table for what I thought would be a lovely Mother's Day brunch with my mom and my wife. The photos of the space looked charming and beautiful and just right for our little outing. When we arrived, there seemed to be no professional dining staff anywhere. Nobody seemed to know anything about our reservation and no tables were set for a party of three. They cleared a table at a banquette for us, but the larger issue was that there was a paint-splattered dropcloth on the floor and dozens of chairs and easels cluttering the center of the room. We soon learned about the weekly painting class that takes place in the room, something we knew nothing about when making the reservation. We certainly would not have made a reservation had we known - but we planned to make the best of it. Our table had a tablecloth on it and nothing else. The server, a perfectly nice young woman but not part of any regular dining room staff (the front desk night auditor?), brought us two cups of coffee and later our third one. There was no sugar or table setting on the table. We had to get that ourselves. We were not offered water, juice, or anything else. Getting any staff's attention over the painting class was very difficult. We felt utterly like an afterthought. The food took too long to arrive, considering there were hardly any diners in the room. Everything was cold. The syrup tasted like Aunt Jemima. We made the best of it and ate the food, which certainly tasted fine - not really worth the price, but fine. It was really odd to try to have a conversation while an art class was happening about one foot from where we were sitting. While we were getting frustrated by our food delay, my wife went to the front desk to complain. The woman there was reasonably apologetic and offered to pass along my wife's name and contact info to the restaurant manager. My wife told her that we didn't think we should have to pay for our meal, given the disappointment of having this experience on a special occasion. The woman said to bring up our receipt after the meal and she would keep a photocopy of it. We didn't have the receipt yet because we hadn't yet been served. After the food arrived and we ate, the server brought us our check. My mother put her card in with the check and it was returned for signing. There was only one slip in the folder (no customer copy) so we added the tip, she signed it and we brought it up to the front desk as requested. After it was photocopied, my mom put the original in her wallet. (I am attaching a photo of it here). 20 minutes after we left the restaurant, we saw there was a voicemail on my wife's phone. Unbelievably, they were claiming we had not paid our bill. I called them and told them that we had brought the paid receipt to the front desk and it had been photocopied. The woman I was talking to insisted that no payment had been processed. I gave her my own credit card number to complete the payment. We contacted management to ensure that we weren't doubled charge - hoping we don't get charged at all. read more

Stumbled upon Cafe Majestic/Hotel Majestic through a blog when I was looking for "plan B" reception for our wedding. We knew we were on a tight budget, but we also didn't want to have a "sad" looking event. As we all know getting married in SF can cost an arm and a leg (literally and figuratively). My sister gave me the best advice when trying to cut cost, look for spaces that have "good bones" so you don't spend a lot of money making it look pretty! And we have to say, Hotel Majestic met that category- it's beautiful, it photographs well, and the slightest enhancements just made for a very elegant event. The second concern would be the food. I mean you spend the bulk of your budget on food, so food has to be good right?! Cafe Majestic knocked it out of the park! they are very willing to work with your budget and dietary needs! We had an intimate wedding of about 50 or so guests. The main entrees were cooked to order, seasoned well, and our guests continued to rave about how good they are! Not to mention, we started the evening off with passed hors d'oeuvres of mini crab cakes and bruschettas, the crab cakes are still top of mind for our lot of our guests! OK so we're now 2 for 2, interior (awesome), food (delicious), now onto the 3rd component of this amazing venue, THE STAFF! Justin and his team are a dream to work with. We (or I) may have driven them crazy with questions, and demands but they all delivered with a smile and a really positive attitude. Their enthusiasm was evident with how our guests felt at the end of the evening not to mention their flexibility with allowing our event designer to transform this already amazing venue to an unforgettable evening, make that weekend! Talk about a Wedding on a Budget! With 3 weeks till our City Hall wedding, dozens of people traveling from all over Southern California, it was crunch time to the T! I found this hidden gem online and Justin responded to my SOS immediately. I was completely lost and with Justin being a part of over 7 weddings and in charge of planning over 35, he made this experience so easy for us. I can go on and on but if you're looking for a location that shows the beauty and charm of that San Francisco history, (whether on a budget or not,) the food was very delicious, the staff super personable and friendly, the draft and bar selection was very good and the pictures online of Hotel Majestic really doesn't show how beautiful this place really is. We stayed here, so we took a chance for breakfast so we didn't have to find parking. We weren't disappointed! Quaint in the beautifully 1902 mansion's dining room- we enjoyed our breakfast of a traditional omelet and a breakfast sandwich. The coffee had gusto, and the hash browns were both crisp and creamy. AMAZING, LIFE CHANGING, BEST DRINKS EVER!!!!!!! A couple of friends stayed at the hotel and said their drinks were amazing... I happen to bump into them while visiting San Francisco, we didn't even plan it, it just happened. When we met up my friends mentioned they stayed at an awesome hotel which was over 100 years old but the real attraction of this hotel was not so much the history but the bartender. They were so mesmerized they did not leave the hotel their first night and kept getting amazing cocktails throughout the night! So the following day they told our group that we MUST try these AMAZING drinks. We did, we went and we ordered. Turns out these drinks are not only AMAZING, but the bartender would create them from scratch! The setup is amazing his bar is stocked with fruits, vegetables, chiles, condiments, and he creates his own juices!!!!! So our first drinks were spicy! YUM!!!!! Second drinks were sweet, he even caramelized the fruit right in front of us to create a syrup like content. Then he made a SUPER REFRESHING, Minty flavored gin drink. Anyway, the point is that we saw a TON OF LOCALS, coming here who knew Mike (worlds most amazing bartender). You could tell who the locals were because all of the visitors were ordering regular standard drinks and the locals would just say "mike! Something sweet, Mike!!! I'm getting lots of undeserved praise from family members for finding this beautiful and comfortable venue. Compliments should go to the hardworking, accommodating staff who made guests and me, a high-strung, perfectionist control freak, feel at ease before, during and after my mom's 70th birthday party. I enjoyed working with Justin, event coordinator extraordinaire, during the planning process. He offered great suggestions for every party detail and is overall a wonderful person to discuss and carry out event plans with. My wife and I went there last weekend and the food was good. If you have a big appetite, you will order a few things on the menu which means your bill when you see it, will be a WTF moment , but we had a coupon. We didnt stay at the hotel, but just dined at the restaurant I had veal scaloppini which was really tasty (great flavor, tender veal) and my wife ordered the Majestic burger which I also enjoyed (so did she) - which was juicy and the bread used was outstanding. Its cozy and perfect for a night cap - buddy up to the bartender and you have yourself a nice little cocktail hour. The lobby of the hotel is very interesting and very Victorian. Hosted my 30th birthday party here -- and loved every minute of it. Justin and his team are very fun and easy to work with. From our first point of contact to the last -- he was on it and keen on ensuring we had a good time. They cared about our event as though it were their own. We hosted a 90 person Passover Seder for Racial Justice at Hotel Majestic on a Friday night. The space is absolutely stunning - our guests were wowed from the moment they arrived. We were able to bring in a chef and use their kitchen and the space was easy to work in. Justin was helpful in getting things arranged in advance, and even more than that, the piece de resistance to this venue is the staff at the hotel - front desk, valets, bartenders, kitchen/dining room managers and more. They are incredibly friendly, helpful and were eager to work with us for the entire night to make sure things went smoothly. I can't say enough good things about their wonderful, can-do attitudes. Particularly Jose, Amanda, Amit, Oscar, Francisco and Bimal, although everyone was great. A couple of us stayed at the hotel the night after the event and the rooms are nice. It's an older hotel with a lot of charm and SF style. read more

*This review is for the bar* Wow... What a great place to have a drink! Hidden at the Majestic Hotel, one of the oldest in the city, is this little wonderful bar. It's small but cozy and drinks are reasonably priced. But beyond the drinks, the service is impecable. Mike, the bartender, is truly passionate about the drinks and he makes them with love. It's is fitting for this old establishment to have such a great, knowledgeable bartender, who truly cater to ones needs and likes. This review is for the "BUTTERFLY BAR LOUNGE" ONLY, not the hotel. I work a few blocks from this gorgeous hotel. The name of the bar (currently "The Butterfly Lounge") changes more than a rapper's handle. However, the relaxed ambience, "get away from it all" feel and very nice bartenders remain. I recommend this gem of a bar with a sort of a daily happy hour of $1 off drinks, to anyone wanting to get away from the loud and proud crowd after work. Beautiful hidden gem, I almost don't want anyone to find out about. The decor is beautiful and the food was delicious. We held a baby shower at the venue and it was perfect. Justin and his staff was very easy to work with the entire time and they made sure we got exactly was we wanted. The pricing was very reasonable and we were so surprised by how good the food was! Sorry, I wanted to like this place. Nice remodel of the dinning room. We were the only party in the dinning room one night. Service was slow. The waitress was not well trained. We brought a bottle of wine to dinner and she was embarrassed to tell us about corkage. She opened and started poring for all guest. Food was marginal. No taste. Had to ask a few times for check. Café majestic is a beautiful venue (hence the 1 star), but management is horrific. Months ago, I booked my sisters baby shower here. My point of contact was Justin Ip, at first he was very attentive & helpful to my event requests. I was suppose to do a walk through of the venue a month before the scheduled event: I arrived 10 mins early, and noticed a paint event being held (I was told there were no event scheduled for our meeting and we would be able to go over the room set up). Justin did not show up, and furthermore did not even reach out to me to let me know he would not make it; apparently he was ill which to me now I feel was total BS. The invites were already sent so I couldn't change the Venue last minute. I emailed him to confirmed the room set up many times he ensured me that the room would be prepared. The contract clearly states that I would have the event from 11-4pm with 30 mins before and after to setup/cleanup. We arrived at 11am being that my event didn't start until 11:30, the room was a complete mess. They opened the venue to hotel guest & served breakfast until 10:30 the day of the event, Justin was no where insight & did not return my calls or text messages. My brother in-law & pregnant sister had to help clean dirty tables, vacuum the entire room, move tables & chairs, replace linens, rearrange the placement of tables. The room was not completely set up until 12:15. To make thing worst I was informed that there would be another party arriving to set up their event at 3:30, which clearly OVERLAPPED into our event. LET ME REMIND YOU I HAD GUEST ARRIVING WHILE WE WERE CLEANING A VENUE I PAID UP FRONT AND IN ADVANCE FOR. Which, also already included the gratuity for services which was yet rendered. The food was not served until 12:30ish the omelet & waffle bar was not ready until 1:15ish. My guest had to wait for food to be prepared & we kept running out of food. They also forgot to add items on the contract that were listed. No one has reached out to apologize or even rectify the situation. It is seriously an embarrassment for the owners of this establishment to have such terrible management. Mindy our server was awesome but she was completely slammed as the only sever & bartender in the entire venue. They were undoubtably understaffed for a 40 person party. The kitchen was not prepared to serve breakfast until 10:30am and have a turnaround for a 40 person buffet style event within an hour of each other. It's a shame because this venue is so nice the management is terrible and needs a huge overhaul. read more

Arrived on time for our 5:15pm Open Table reservation on a Friday evening. Walked into the dining room and it was obvious there was a private party going on. Justine then confirmed this and said, "I guess no one scheduled this with Open Table." Guess not. He offered us a rather lame table in the bar, then in the library (eating on our laps). Not acceptable. We left. We were looking forward to this dinner to celebrate a special occasion. Put on our nice duds and spent some time searching for parking. What a waste. This restaurant is now the Majestic Cafe, located in the quaint Majestic Hotel. My dinner here was one of the most uncomfortable dining experiences I've ever had -- though this wasn't the fault of the management, and the food actually was quite good, if overpriced. We arrived at 7:30 on a Friday night to an empty dining room. Totally empty. It is a beautiful and ornate space, but with all the mirrors I don't think any patrons could have been hiding from us. It's hard enough to settle in to a nearly empty restaurant, but this was ridiculous. When we left, only two other parties had come in to eat. To add to the discomfort, our waiter was on his first day serving his first table. A more experienced server coached him through the specials and desserts and watched his performance. Awkward! I thought my caesar salad was excellent, and a linguine dish was not half bad. But it's hard to enjoy a night out when your restaurant of choice is so clearly off track. I know I caught Majestic Cafe/Uptown Joe's on a down night, so a 3rd star would not have been out of the question. If you go, you may have a better time. My girlfriends and I came here for PaintNite a few Thursday ago. They have a full bar and a wide selection of figure food for us to enjoy while painting. A month ago we had our wedding reception here at Cafe Majestic for a little over 50 guests and had a wonderful time. The place is beautiful and does not require much decorations. Justin and staff were great to work with and helped us planned our celebration. The food and drinks at the bar was delicious. Many of our guests enjoyed the decor of the venue, food and drinks. Justin is very accomadating, willing to work with the budget and the number of guests at your event, and will be honest with what kind of food and drinks they can provide. So if you are looking for a beautiful venue for a small wedding reception, baby shower, or birthday I highly recommend Cafe majestic. read more

This place has gone downhill. The Butterfly Lounge was one of my favorite bars, so I thought it would be a great place to take my mom for a drink when she was in town. I ordered French 75s for us, and was served some sort of green martinis. I regularly order the French 75 at this bar, so know what the drink looks and tastes like! I politely asked the bartender if he had served us another drink by mistake, and he brusquely lied to our faces that he had indeed served us the French 75 and that was that. Most places that charge $12 a drink will not only serve you the right drink, but also make sure you are happy with it! A bit flustered and wanting to have a nice time together, we drank the too-strong drinks we were served. The real problem came when I tried to contact the hotel manager to talk about what had happened. I have been by the hotel once and left three voice mails over the course of a week and have not gotten a single response. Every time I ask about whether the manager is available, whoever I speak to acts totally confused, as if it was the strangest question in the world. Alas, this was a great neighborhood spot I'll no longer be visiting. And if the manger is reading this, PLEASE return my phone calls! read more

Dinner in 1995 pretending to be 1957..... And not in some cool 'Mad Men' way with Don Draper lounging in a booth, sipping a Manhattan.... It was like Chasen's, the "in" Beverly Hills restaurant of the 1940s and '50's before it breathed it's last sad breath in the mid-90's. Walking into the small and antiquated 'Butterfly Lounge' there are a few old-timers bemoaning our recent rain spotting the dust on their cars (probably Chrysler Imperial sedans...?) and 'amazing' Mike (looking the bedraggled hipster) is pretending to be busy behind the bar arranging table candles. The amazing piece is that this place has only six people in it (two geriatric couples sipping Rob Roys and what looked to be Tom Collins), Mike and now lucky me. Amazing Mike pretends I do not exist and is very busy playing the shell game with his candles. I call out to Amazing Mike that I have reservations at 6:00. No longer able to ignore me, he pulls himself away from the candles and actually provides some service. Not to blame him, it appears to be a rare instance anyone actually wants to be served in this tomb. You can imagine I woke him out of a decades long sleep....... Amazing Mike shows me to one of the largest booths and hands me two paper menus in a completely empty restaurant. The place actually looks like something out of Hollywood in the 1950s. Only this go round, they painted it cream and beige and have big white ceramic dogs in the breeze way (oh my, how VERY modern...!!!!). I order an amazing Gin and Tonic. Amazing Mike brings my very amazing cocktail. It turns out to be no more amazing than my left shoe lace. Apparently, you need about 12 of these before anything in this place is actually 'amazing'. ....... I sip my cocktail and try to look as Don Draper as I can (now that WOULD be 'amazing'....) without the cigarette (which I am beginning to need...). While waiting for my friend to arrive, a group of some of the oldest people in the world wander over to a large table set up for about 12. Is there a senior home in the hotel? Are these the ghosts of Rat Pack past? The men loudly say the most misogynistic things to the women thinking they are 'cool and hip'...."take off your coat baby....Oh...and now the blouse. Ha-Ha". The women blush and giggle like little girls. I think one of them was actually wearing a fur stole. They start in discussing tickets purchased for a group outing to see "Jersey Boys" at the RKO theatre. The RKO Theatre? Ummmmm.......like the Los Angeles RKO Theatre was closed in 1964 and demolished in 1965. OMG. I am in a Twilight Zone episode...... Moses then corrects himself and says 'Jersey Boys' at the Golden Gate. Now THAT was amazing......... Then one of the other dinosaurs begins to angrily criticize Obama. Please....do you even know who Barack Obama is? Don't you mean Jack Kennedy, you old Republican from the Eisenhower years? He probably thinks Michelle is Jackie with a dark tan she got on the dock at Hyannis Port....... Turning my attention to the menu..... which unsurprisingly has T-Bone steak and Ceaser salad on it. On the "International Menu' I could have Chicken Enchiladas from sunny Mexico or Holstein Schnitzel from our friends in jolly Deutschland........ really? A skinny waiter (something out of a casting call for Sid and Nancy) comes up and mumbles something like, 'Are you ready to order'? pointing to the menu lying on the table waiting for my friend to arrive. 'Ummm...no. I'd like to wait for my friend'................... sheez. Then, (and THIS really is amazing) a huge cloud of marijuana smoke fills the room. The place suddenly reeks of it. I cough not being able to decide if I should breath deeply or hold my breath. The smell is so strong, Sid (his real name is Maurice) actually opens a window. Where the hell did this come from? Not the 1959 Republican table. Is Mike handing out joints in the 'Butterfly Lounge'? Now I see why Luis A. thought "AMAZING, LIFE CHANGING, BEST DRINKS EVER!!!!!!!". He was stoned....... My friend arrives. After some tedious waiting we are able to order from Sid/Maurice our 50's dinner of Ceaser, T-Bone and her Chicken Piccata. (Now really, when is the last time you had a T-Bone and Piccata anything?). I ask for the steak to be medium rare. Sid/Maurice says, 'medium'. My friend corrects him. Cuz it has to be retro, I also order a Cabernet with dinner. Sid/Maurice eventually figures out how to bring the steak (more like medium/well), a baked potato with grated cheddar cheese and some boiled vegies. Is this what the senior facility ate tonite? Sid/Maurice forgets my wine. Don't even ask about bread cuz that never happened. Sid/Maurice struggles at the end to split the bill. It takes him 20 minutes to split an $80.00 tab. NOW I know where the marijuana haze came from......................ugh. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but what an AMAZING experience! We wanted to plan a small wedding, in a hurry, and on a budget! The GM Justin went above and beyond all expectations to make everything happen for us, and he was a pleasure to deal with. The venue was beautiful and classy, the staff was warm and friendly, the food was delicious, the drinks were strong, and the wine was great! Cafe Majestic (inside Hotel Majestic) does not look like your typical cafe. It's a hidden gem in a convenient location in SF for events with about 100 people. My wife and I had our baby shower here and it was the perfect venue. The food was good (especially the garlic fries, bruschetta, and paella) and the room is nicely detailed already so my wife loved that it required very little decorating and that the set up was very comfortable/spacious for all of our guests. The adjoining bar (The Butterfly Lounge) was awesome for me and my friends to have some drinks and watch the game during the baby shower too. The staff made everything very easy for our hosts and accommodated any requests we had throughout the party. We would highly recommend this venue. read more

I've been meaning to review this bar for awhile. I think I was reluctant because it is such a hidden gem. Apparently the word is out now, so I can throw in my 2¢ worth. I actually live in S.F., so I have my pick of great places for a cocktail or three. When I want an excellent cocktail, in a classic bar that is not a high decibel noise-depository - I turn to the Hotel Majestic. Their over 100 year old butterfly collection is amazing (and, educational if you haven't had one too many yet.) The bar itself is cozy and comfortable set in an old beaux art style hotel, frequented by tourists. The bar itself has a local following, however. The bartender, Mike, (not sure if he is the only one, but he is the main event!) is friendly, knowledgeable and creative - a triple threat! He will custom make a drink depending on your whim or mood of the moment. I usually go on the early side to avoid crowds, but I've been there at all times of the evening and it is stll great. I want to point out that I am ONLY referring to the bar, not the restaurant. PS: As a side note - it is right around the corner from the Mary Ellen Pleasant Memorial - check it out on Bush & Octavia. A true hidden gem with a chef that knocks it out of the park. From the perfect breakfast to the sirloin burger to the pasta dishes this beautiful historic setting hits all the notes on key. By pass all that wok stuff and get a real meal in a classy joint. Rarely do I ask for the chef to come out, tonight we did and gave him rounding applause. Walk up from Fillmore and get some some real San Francisco. Also check the great bar. read more

No reason to come here unless you are staying in the hotel. I ate breakfast here one day during my stay and it was perfectly acceptable. I was kinda miffed a place with this old school style didn't have eggs benidict. Actually the menu was borderline weird. I got the breakfast quesadilla because danger is my middle name. This review is for the restaurant. Cafe Majestic is underrated! The ambiance feels like a Pacific Heights mansion. Elegant, yet inviting and comfortable, especially in the booths. On occasion it almost even feels like we are dining at home, enjoying the meal without being rushed, and lingering afterwards for coffee and desert. The place just puts me at ease. The service is spot on as well. I have always felt well taken care of, the waters were filled, the bread is brought out immediately, and the food is hot when it comes out of the kitchen. The servers are friendly, and consistently pleasant. The veal picatta is phenomenal. This is my go-to. I have also tasted the pork chop off the plate of a companion which was also noteworthy, and the pasta dishes have been solid as well. If you stick to the classic dishes, you can not go wrong. I have always wondered about the international menu, it seems strange to offer lamb curry in a place like this, but I'm sure it's decent if not phenomenal. Glad to know it's there if you want it. Also, it is reasonably priced and a great value considering what you get. It's classy, yet laid-back at the same time, and I've always had an excellent meal. Dined there with elderly parents after several months of avoiding it since the food previously was awul and it was clear that they were going to close. The revised menu from a new chef is quite extensive and the food was very good (ravioli, antipasto, sole dore). The wine list is a joke, however. Very bothersome that there were only 2 other tables occupied, one with elderly women probably from one of the local retirement facilities who kept spilling their water. The place has a bad reputation due to the previous management, but the food now is quite good and the waitstaff is earnest if not terribly polished. I encourage people to try it, and once they get more business perhaps they can add more professional and experienced waitstaff. read more

I booked this venue to host my son's first birthday party. Justin and his staff was very accommodating and provided everything we would need to make this celebration go smoothly. The place itself is beautiful and does not require much decorating. Very spacious; my guests were able to sit and walk around comfortably. I had about 70 guests. There is also a bar right next to the cafe for any guests that are thirsty. Street parking only which wasn't too big of an issue. everybody had a blast. Highly recommend. read more
