Our evening began in a completely empty restaurant. Well there were 3 people sitting at the bar and 2 customers seated in the dining area. So nearly empty, at 6:45pm on a Friday afternoon. Isn't that normally a restaurant red flag? Not in this case. After being seated in a comfy large booth, our drink orders were taken by our new bestest friend for the next 2 hours, our waitress Jane. My girlfriend has a penchant for Moscow Mules, but fruity - and less gingery - variations on that libation. So once again a bartender was put to the task of creating a custom Moscow Mule which turned out INCREDIBLE. I had my standard double house vodka with a splash of grapefruit "gasoline libation" LOL. Starting with the complimentary Artisan breads: a basket of flatbreads, multigrain and raisin-nut breads, and what seemed to be their version of naan bread was a starting salvo like no other. We scarfed those right down. Yes, scarfed. When we finished the first bread basket (yes they offered another and we accepted), we realized that the restaurant was filling up with patrons. Entrée's: 1) GLUTEN FREE Jumbo Sea Scallops with sweet plantains and mango salsa. It also came with French beans, Arugula, citrus butter & sweet jerk glaze. 2) Grilled Pompano with Almond-Basil Crust. It also came with Citrus Butter Sauce, steamed seasonal vegetables and jasmine rice. They both were truly gastronomic feasts. An explosion of colors, flavors, textures and aromas. Magnificent. It was very difficult choosing an entrée because there are soooo many amazing menu choices. We knew right away that we wanted to try practically everything on the menu. We will return and try something completely different next time. Dessert: Our bestest friend for the last two hours, Jane, recommended the Warm Apple Tart with caramel, almond frangipane and cinnamon swirl ice cream. Why do we always do this to ourselves??? We are stuffed but... After the entrée gastro-experience we just had, it's MANDATORY! The dessert was of course was an outlandishly, sinfully, delightful, extravagance. Customer appreciation: Our bestest buddy Jane (waitress) accommodated us superbly. She informed and steered, she watched over us ready to swoop in at any time removing dirty plates or replenishing drinks, and most importantly gave us our privacy to enjoy the food, the ambiance of the establishment and each others company. We introduced ourselves to one of the owners Darrel on the way out. He very graciously gave us a guided tour of the entire restaurant which included a "behind-the-scenes" visit to the kitchen and food prep areas. There we met the other owner and resident chef Oliver. Cafe Maxx has daily food and wine events throughout the week including large wine tastings and food pairings. Oh and they have cooking classes too! WOW After reading some Café Maxx reviews and looking over the "daily-changing" menu online, we decided to have dinner here on a balmy summer evening. It was a great choice. read more

OMG, where to begin? It's Friday night and we have no plans. What to do? Of course, you surf Yelp to find that perfect spot to end a long, hard work week. So many choices but a few stood out making for a tough decision. I know the Cafe Maxx name and the reviews / pics look great. I called and they say "come on in, there's no wait or reservation needed". Time to jump in the car and pretend I'm Mario Andretti on Atlantic Blvd! I was a little skeptical on entry with only a few cars in the lot and a handful of people at the bar. Hmmm, it is Friday night but still early for some (6:45). It took a moment to be seated but as I looked around, it felt familiar. I have that feeling of deja vu... have I been here before? Yeah, probably. Jane approached to ask about beverages. After much discussion and jumping from no alcohol to can the bartender make...? We (ok, I) decided on a modification to one of their standard drinks which really should be on the menu. A few minutes later she was back and now were in our happy place. During this time, the bread basket arrived and provided another distraction. It was filled with a selection making it a tough decision where to have my carb fix. Each choice was better than the first until I reached the bottom and found the onion crusted focaccia. Yumm! We were never rushed as we perused the menu while chomping on the bread and sipping our delicious bar drinks. Don't even ask about all of the berries at the bottom of my mule. After a couple of toasts, it was decision time. I selected the Seared Scallops from the "Lighter-side" list and Joe ordered the Basil / Almond Crusted Pompano. There were so many appealing choices but I felt good with mine... don't second guess. As we wait for our food, we see the steady entry of patrons and the have to speculate on the table filled with wine glasses that we noticed on our way in (see pic). We had a clue but the board hanging over the kitchen confirmed the wine tastings. A short time later the 10 seats at this table start to fill. Our food arrives and both entrees look amazing! Our first bites confirm we made excellent choices. My scallops are so tender and flavorful, the green beans are just right and the buttery, sweet, jerk all blend together to create a savory taste-bud adventure. Of course, I had to steal a taste of Joe's pompano... also outstanding. I'm not a clean-plater but I did some serious damage here. It did help that the "lighter-side" menu appears to not be carb laden. It was my fav... protein and veggies. Perfect! During our meal we are watching everything as our wine tasting table gets started diving into their 10 glass per person experience.... one bottle at a time. We also see this guy circulating, talking to various tables and playing with the lights. We ask Jane and she informs us this is Darryl, the owner. He and Ollie have been here over 30 years. This confirmed my earlier felling of deja vu. I have been here before, probably over 10 years ago. Through all of this our meals slowly disappear, you don't come here for a rushed meal. Jane has been checking on us regularly but she now has the toughest question of the night... dessert? Joe and I often struggle with this question bc we don't always want the same thing and our waistlines shouldn't have a full dessert each. With her guidance, I'm steered away from my first choice and we order the Warm Apple Tart. Again, excellent choice. This was beautifully presented (as was everything) and along with the cinnamon ice cream was perfect. It wasn't too heavy and just the right size for sharing after such a wonderful meal. Finally Jane returns and we have to ask for the bad news. lol On the way out the door, Darryl is standing at the entry and we start to talk while moving outside. After a few minutes, he asks if we would like a tour... YES! This was so cool. He took us to see the private dining room at the rear which was set-up for a party yet to arrive. How about the kitchen? How many restaurants will show you their kitchen? This was a well oiled machine. Each area in the multiple sections were neat, organized and clean. The staff were friendly and Ollie shook hands. WOW!!! This was a fantastic evening (followed by a drive along the beach) and I know we will be back. Thank you Darryl and Ollie. read more

We loved Cafe Maxx. It was our first time here. I had a great Espresso Martini. The bread basket came out fresh and it was a variety. Ceasar salad was great. I had the Shrimp & Wild Mushroom Risotto. My husband has the Duck Ravioli. They both were outstanding. For dessert we went for the creme brûlée it was the best we have ever had. We will be back !! read more

The worst part was the waitress could have cared less, I bet that changed when she saw that big fat $0.0 tip. Our go-to special restaurant never disappoints. We found this treasure and have returned here bringing many friends. The menu is very unusual and I usually prefer fish while my husband is a meat eater. Their appetizers are wonderful. I have tuna sashimi pizza which we always fight who gets to eat the last piece. Outstanding! I have had their almond crusted goat cheese salad and my husband has the red and yellow beet salad. Both served beautifully and credible-tasting. For an entree I have had sweet onion crusted snapper. Absolutely melts in your mouth. My husband adores the grilled double cut lamp chops with encrusted parmesan cheese. We dined there last night with friends who loved the bread basket of warm raisin bread. Our friends ordered this 3 more times and our waitress always complied. We had a lovely waitress from Brazil who was very attentive to us throughout the meal. After sharing an appetizer, I took home more than 1/2 of my entree as I had never ordered their amazing-looking desserts. We ordered, carrot cake, chocolate chip cookie with all the yummy accompaniments and a warm apple tart. You never saw 4 people devour their respective desserts so quickly. I actually took home most of my carrot cake to save for another night. I only have 2 complaints. The noise level on a Saturday night can be deafening. Combine patrons drinking, eating and socializing in a small room can get noisy. We had 8 pm reservations and the restaurant started thinning out by 10 pm. Went for Dine Out Fort Lauderdale. Haven't been here in a very look time and we all know that Oliver really started the whole Foodie thing in at least Broward that I'm aware of. So this was my first of the Dine Out. Early reservation 6:00pm. Seated immediately of course at that hour. But it does get busy. Felt a little pressure to ordered. I told her that we would like a few glasses of wine first no problem. So,then we did ordered after We received of second drink . First course I had the Beef Carpaccio , very yummy the remoulds was to me like just mayo and garlic flavor., wish the dish was a bit room temperature, so I enjoyed my house Pinot Grigio then it was awesome and enjoyed which tasted like homemade croutons . Hubby had the Caesar he said he had better , but to me it looked as if it was all hearts . Main entrees: macadamia nuts crusted flounder. It was a bit mushy for me but the flavor was spot on. The Sweet Potatoes Mashed was my favorite of the night. Hubby had the Duck it looked good, large portion I believe it came with a cold potato which was real good not sure and asparagus. . Been here a few times and have had mixed results with the menu. Overall the ambiance is spectacular, but the food does not always match the price tag and is a little inconsistent with quality. Overall the menu is super creative and in my few times eating here I have been impressed by the different ingredients they explore and the presentation of the dishes. I recall a few memorable dishes one being a chicken dish I was not as impressed with and recall that it was very expensive was nothing more than chicken with a bland sauce and garnish. The rizzuto and salad were good, but for the cost it just made no sense. Then on the other side I have had the hog fish and the snapper and been pretty impressed with how it is prepared along with the only again think it is a little pricey for what I am getting. The signature dish is is the "Sweet Onion Crusted Snapper" which is a must try at least once. Primarily because the menu here changes frequently, and seemingly gets more and more interesting every time. Think wild mushroom bread pudding sounds tame? Then think again, because its that kind of creativity that makes Cafe Maxx. Now that you have an idea of what awaits your palette, lets talk about the bar. Ronnie is the main bartender he is the type of bartender you tell what you're in the mood for and he makes it happen. Bourbon, bacon, rosemary and you'll experience a solid libation that will think your in the south of France. This restaurant caters to the few that appreciate creativity and class in food. If you are the adventurous sort then Cafe Maxx is the place for you! I am a big fan of this place due to 2 things...1. They have a new menu daily . And 2. The food is fantastic. During my latest visit I had the Atkins Shrimp and Seafood Scampi, great dish and the seafood was cooked perfectly, the broth had amazing flavor and i never missed the pasta. My date had the lamb chops with goat cheese which was rich and decadent and every bite was a full body experience! This place is truly a gem of a find in an area that is slowly being taking over by mediocre chains. By the way make sure to save room for dessert the range of options and quality is out of this world! read more

Superb! Absolute fine attention to every detail. From the gorgeous hostess and hospitable handsome host, to our charming sharp waiter and busman. Our waiters suggestions all detailed and we'll appreciated. The ambiance is lovely, nice lighting atmosphere and easy to have a conversation. I had a mezcal old fashion our waiter highly recommended that was incredible! Found out the drink was created by tequila expert Phillip Ward in 2007 in East Village NYC. My tenderloin steak out created most beautiful f the best American steak houses I've been to. I'm a cowgirl who enjoys an over the top steak. I originally told the waiter I wanted the cowboy steak and he responded; that's a big steak! L O L. I was joking but happy with the 3 peppercorn filet cooked to perfection buttery medium rare! Omg Im still drooling over it and let me tell you that smoky Mezcal paired well with the steak potatoes and veggies! Husband has the black grouper and our guest had the shrimp scampi. Cafe Maxx takes it to the max. This place had impeccable food and service. They are serious about what they do and it shows without being over the top or smoke and mirrors. Vegetarians and vegans can be accomodated upon request. Absolutely some of the best desserts around. Parking is valet, but complementary. Make sure you have reservations especially on weekends as it will fill up and quick. It's been here for a while and worthy of your visit. read more

Let me begin this review with a shout out to my main squeeze, Stacy Lynn and her accurate description of the quality of food I was to expect. Spot On! Cafe Maxx has a longstanding reputation as an upscale dining experience with an emphasis on unique and innovative offerings. Much to my chagrin, upon arrival our reservation was not immediately available to the hostess for some unknown reason. After an inordinate amount of time debating her on the facts our reservation was found. I didn't want to argue or complain but I was quite disappointed that the table we were sat at, was basically in the bar and the intimate evening I was anticipating never materialized. Upon being seated, we ordered drinks and appetizers. The shrimp in Peruvian sauce, steak tar-tar and Brussels sprouts were off the chain delicious. I only wish the 20 minutes it took for the apps to arrive we could have had a bread basket. Is that asking too much, when every other table seemed to have bread? Only after the waitress walked by a number of times without looking down or checking in. Nothing worse than being ignored when you need a new napkin......I finally did I get her attention and a few minutes later a bread basket arrived at the same time as the Appetizers. Now, I love a good bread, so I was confused where to begin. Oh, the raisin bread looked good, so I asked for butter, but I was "TOLD" we use the oil. Huh, I don't like raisin bread with oil..... Well, I guess she saved me a few calories and all 4 of us enjoyed the Apps! For my entree I had the Peppercorn filet. Done perfect and definitely the best filet I had of recent. Finished off the meal with some delicious coffee and a very rich mouton lava cake with delicious ice cream and fresh fruit. In summary, the food was outstanding and the company enjoyable, however the front of the house lacked some critical components to make my revisit to Cafe Maxx a 5 star experience. Came with friends for a late Sunday brunch. (A torrential downpour set us back so by the time we arrived the place was pretty empty and near closing.) I've heard Cafe Maxx does a good Brunch so I wanted to see if it was worth the hype! While some friends got bottomless Mimosas I started off with a Cup-Achino, which is a Cappuccino with mocha/cocoa flavors. It was so good I ended up ordering two more! Maxx's whole brunch menu sounded appetizing and I ended up ordering a Tuna Sashimi Pizza. It was filling + looked and tasted spectacular, especially in light of the reasonable $15 price! (To continue the theme of ordering the same thing again I got a second Tuna Sashimi Pizza for the road!) My friends ordered a smorgasbord of good eats, including a slice of Caviar Pie, Icky Sticky Cinnamon Bun, Cashew and Macadamia Nut Crusted French Toast, Open-faced Breakfast BLT and the Duck Egg Omelet with its accoutrements. We ended up getting Creme Brulee for dessert, it was so rich! Service was superb! Our waitress was such a friendly server + made all the tasty Cappuccinos! We haven't been here in ages. The food, as always, was amazing. The people watching - even better. Face lifts and boob jobs and giant lips. It was a circus of people. The wait ftaff was pleasant but aloof. We had the snapper with carmelized onions which was very good. The duck and smoked mozarella ravioli were great. Good wine selection. We had a bottle of Row 11. It was a nice dinner. I didn't feel particularly at home or comfortable. The whole place felt a little stiff. Could be all the botox. Decided to try this for a change. So glad we did. The caviar pie and other apps were delicious. Every entree was presented with style and tasted amazing. Four of us split a bread pudding dessert that was simply decadent! The service was professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and more. Comfotable, clean and relaxing atmosphere. One of the best meals I have had in Florida, period!! Cafe Maxx is worth the trip from Miami Beach!! Best dessert I have ever had!!!!! The Kentucky Derby was a mixture of chocolate and pecans topped with vanilla ice cream and surrounded by a chocolate sause that was simply magic. When I asked the chef how he was able to make the pie stand the way he did he answered, "lots and lots of eggs!" (See pictures) Be aware, the menu changes here on a daily basis so don't expect a repeat of the meal I had but I'm sure your going to find something equally as delicious. The entire experience I had was a pleasure! Our mistaken arrival time put us at Cafe Maxx an hour early than expecte and I decided it was time for a few beers! I started off with the Samichlans Classic. Don't drink this 'beer' if you want a beer. The fact it is labeled a beer is a misrepresentation. It was horrible, tasted like cough syrup. Had to send it back but I can't say the bartender didn't warn me. It was in fact, quite a unique heavy and syrupy beer. Needing something lighter I went for the a beer from the Mendocino Brewing Company, the Blond Ale, a much lighter citrus and slightly sweet beer. We ordered the Filet Mignon Beef Tartar with blue goat cheese peppedews, capers, crostini & basil, incredible! Unfortunately, our guest had a run in with the state police and would be another 30 minutes, so we ordered a few more libations. The Sprecher Oktoberfest was a really delicious heavy beer that warmed me up just right. I liked the Sprecher Oktoberfest so much I tried another Oktoberfest on the menu with no name, just a mysterious Oktober Fest Pumpkin. Again great beer. Once our guest finally arrived, we sat down and were greeted by Daryl the owner who could not have been nicer and more excited about the new additions to the days menu. He strongly suggested we try his Tuna Pizza, of which we tried and his recommendation did not disappoint. All I can say is Hog Snapper, amazing. During dinner we had the bartender make specialty drinks off the top of his head, which included a blood orange, cognac, simple syrup and orange liquor up and a whisky (Woodford Reserve) up with fresh ginger, crushed mint and a hint of simply syrup, both tasted very good but I prefere whisky so I liked the second drink. read more

Exceeded expectations with well prepared food, good service and quiet atmosphere. Ok it was Tuesday early but still our booth shielded the generally low sound level. Everything had a touch of thought and the hand. We had caesar salad and fried eggplant marinara for appetizers and drinks. Main course was onion topped snapper delicious and moist with dark brown carmelized onions and a few choice vegetables, mash something and sauce. Lettuce wraps and chopped chicken Asian style and fresh jumbo stone crabs- pricey but fresh and delicious sauce. Deserts were generous and multi layered creations and included special touches, sauces and fresh fruits and berries - the two we had we're riffs on classics like cream brûlée and flourless chocolate cake. Our first time here, Apps and drinks at the bar. My wife, her brother and myself shared six appetizers: tuna sashimi pizza, which was spot on; crispy Brussel sprouts, even I liked it; baked pumpkin and roast vegetable risotto with jumbo scallops, very nice; roasted oysters, more please; wagyu beef soft tacos, excellent; pan seared foie gras, holy mackerel. "Dinner" at the bar was quite nice. The bartender's service was first rate. We shall return...to try the actual entrees or just to sit at the well appointed bar and have drinks with Apps. Came here for brunch. I have to say the cheesy biscuits are delicious and hard to leave a piece. The whole wheat biscuits are also good which I was surprised. The shrimp and grits were delicious, actually really glad we ordered them since grits can be a risk, but not here. The service was also good. So very very disappointed. Cafe Max was our "go to " place for the the best dining experience. First time back since covid and I don't know what happened. First mistake was probably ordering off the special dine out Lauderdale menu. Crispy sprouts came out saturated with sauce and mushy, we've had them before and completely different. Not eatable. Returned a Mahi that was supposed to be served with feta, no feta and that as well was saturated in oil over a bed of greens and cold. Presentation far from what we're used to there. I then received nut encrusted Mahi, again not up to par, so much liquid on the plate, and a 1/2 teaspoon of salsa. Desserts were ok but again disappointing. All I can say is that we were so very dissatisfied, maybe ordering off the regular menu would have been different but with a restaurant that usually has such high standards, that shouldn't matter. read more

I was excited about trying this place. A friend told me this place was famous for their Sunday Brunch. Unfortunately I did not enjoy my experience here. I am a breakfast person and there is not a better way to start a great day with an excellent breakfast. I tried to make a custom order and I guess that was the issue (the waitress gave me the not happy look for it). I ordered biscuits and a size of bacon. If you ever have wondered who burnt the bacon, the answer is here!! The bacon was badly burnt black it was totally inedible. The biscuits were not good either. And coffee...oh boy the coffee... totally meh. I didn´t like the decoration of the place either. I felt trapped in a dark place. My friend enjoyed the food so again, I guess you should just order what is on the menu. read more

I WISH I understood how this place has pretty good reviews. This is one of the WORST dinners I've had in a VERY long time. The best part of the dinner was the glass of wine. I went last night and decided instead of doing dine out Fort Lauderdale to just venture off into the real menu. The crispy eggplant was below average and very underwhelming--flavorless. The steak tartare was not half bad. But the entrees..... run. I had penne allá vodka (with grilled chicken apparently added into it) there was no grilled chicken and it tasted like overly well done pasta with smashed tomatoes in it and nothing else. Then, the Shrimp scampi was BEYOND flavorless and the shrimp was RAW in the middle. It took 20 minutes for our waitress to ask how the food was so by then we didn't even want it anymore. So that was good. Thank god I got the shrimp entree taken off but I was BEYOND disappointed in this place. I spent $100 for one of the worst meals in my life. :) read more

Today we went back to Cafe Max for the third time, our first experience was Amazing, from service to the food an A+.... Today though it felt really short. We made reservations but once we arrived they made us wait another 10min which we didn't mind we waited by the bar with a drink. Then we got seated in a tight two person table and while we waited for our waitress another waitress passed by and said if no one took our order she would to help out our waitress, that was fine we ordered our appetizer with her... only to find out that she was our waitress but never introduced herself never said anything she just came back and asked us what we wanted so that as an experience wasn't the best. Our tuna pizza was underwhelming with not that much flavor and not really the fantastic tuna pizza we remembered so not sure what changed. I ordered the halibut with the risotto which was very good! Now my husband ordered the parpadelle bolognese and my husband and I agreed that pasta was an IMPasta! It was not a pasta more like a beef broth with noodles minus the broth. It lacked flavor and anything that resembles a bolognese it was more like a shredded steak chunks with some tomatoes and dry pasta. Honestly it was terrible, as usual my husband ate it and did t want to say anything since the restaurant was very busy. For desert we got the apple tart with ice cream... well we had this before and again in the past it was fantastic but today the apple tart was DRY and ice cream had too much cinnamon... needles to say I had been craving coming back to cafe Max since our last time but after today I'm not sure when I will give it a try, maybe not on a weekend when it's so busy so the cooks have more time to actually make better meals? Based on the menu and both Yelp and Open Table reviews we booked Cafe Maxx for our family for Thanksgiving. Overall a tremendous disappointment. The tables were right on top of one another, absolutely zero social distancing. This didn't bother me other than we couldn't hear one another - however a couple of family members were very uncomfortable about the apparent lack of concern over COVID. The main dining room was extremely loud - like being at a Springsteen concert loud - both the volume and all the Jersey accents loud! The appetizers and salads were excellent, and they were served promptly. We then waited and waited for the entrees which finally arrived 45 minutes after we finished the salads. Three of the four folks who ordered fish entrees, all specifying "please don't overcook the fish" - sent their dishes back as they were served well done -to the point that they were nearly inedible. The fourth person who ordered fish had the seared tuna which is basically a crunchy tuna sushi role that you can get for half the price at any decent sushi joint. Our two guests who ordered pasta were generally pleased, the pasta was cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely. The portions were commensurate to the price. Overall - Very inconsistent service, poor timing, horribly overcooked fish, overpriced, very loud and over-crowded dining room - I truly do not understand how this place has a 4.3 rating on Open Table and Yelp - what am I missing? read more

Divine food experience. The restaurant is so cosy and homey. Classic old school "white linen"... Our waiter Tom was funny, knowledgeable and very efficient. In one word- exquisite service. We celebrated our son's 7th Birthday there, and, boy, it was a good choice of a place. A bit pricey but soooo worth it. Every dish was so tasty that I think we will remember it forever. And we are from NY - we understand GOOD food. Will definitely return our next trip to Pompano Beach. Highly recommended - The place is impossible not to fall in love with. THANK YOU! Tonight we had a superior experience in a restaurant which we had previously avoided because we thought it was a cafe. Saturday night in South Florida is a biggy for people wanting to eat out. We had trouble finding a decent spot and went past Cafe Maxx. 'What the hell' we quizzed each other. 'If it's crappy, there's a burger joint nearby". Well, we were surprised. It's a high end restaurant. The people who greeted us were uniformly pleasant, courteous, patient and well turned out. As an appetizer, I had the best calamari I have eaten in a long time; my wife had the Caesar salad and to quote a strangely coiffed government leader, "it was tremendous, the best ever...in the history of the whole world". True to form, that's an exaggeration, but still it was t'riffic! Then I had the parmesan pork chop and Miss had the spaetzel. It was very good. This was followed with coffee (fair but not great) and creme brulee which was very good also, but was more creme than brulee. All in all I heartily recommend this restaurant. Take lots of money because it's on the expensive side, but it still represents good value for money. We will be back. This may well be our new, best favorite eatery. read more

Was extremely disappointed in their classic eggs Benedict. They use pork tenderloin NOT Canadian bacon. I was told that's how we make it. That could be, but don't call it Canadian bacon because it isn't. There is a big difference. My husband had an omelet which he enjoyed. Thankfully they make a delicious cinnamon roll although they call it a sticky bun. WTH? read more

I have been coming here for over 20 years. I am a Nurse and we have many Pharmaceutical Programs. Ricardo, the Senior Waiter is amazing.! He knows me personally, and always smiles and refills drinks etc. we talk and he makes you feel at ease. Darrell the owner, always makes my experience Special. I will go privately again.. I have never had a bad meal here and I am one to ask. Ricardo is such a delight. I am so proud to say this restaurant is tops! If You want amazing food, amazing service, Ask for Ricardo!
