Tonight we had a superior experience in a restaurant which we had previously avoided because we thought it was a cafe. Saturday night in South Florida is a biggy for people wanting to eat out. We had trouble finding a decent spot and went past Cafe Maxx. 'What the hell' we quizzed each other. 'If it's crappy, there's a burger joint nearby". Well, we were surprised. It's a high end restaurant. The people who greeted us were uniformly pleasant, courteous, patient and well turned out. As an appetizer, I had the best calamari I have eaten in a long time; my wife had the Caesar salad and to quote a strangely coiffed government leader, "it was tremendous, the best ever...in the history of the whole world". True to form, that's an exaggeration, but still it was t'riffic! Then I had the parmesan pork chop and Miss had the spaetzel. It was very good. This was followed with coffee (fair but not great) and creme brulee which was very good also, but was more creme than brulee. All in all I heartily recommend this restaurant. Take lots of money because it's on the expensive side, but it still represents good value for money. We will be back. This may well be our new, best favorite eatery. read more

I have been coming here for over 20 years. I am a Nurse and we have many Pharmaceutical Programs. Ricardo, the Senior Waiter is amazing.! He knows me personally, and always smiles and refills drinks etc. we talk and he makes you feel at ease. Darrell the owner, always makes my experience Special. I will go privately again.. We went for dinner with our friend.I had the caesar salad to begin with , my other half had the caprese salad. The three of us shared a shrimp pasta as an appetizer which was delightful. I had the fish which I can't remember the kind but I think It was a house special, my other half had the pork chops very tender and moist, pork chops tend to be on the dry side if not prepared well. Our friend had the grouper. I would go back again to try other dishes. The prices are not cheap but you pay what you get for. I highly recommend this place if you want great food. read more

Sunday Brunch what a disappointing mess. I had one of 'Cafe Maxx Brunch Specialties' the Chef's Frittata. The chef needs to read the menu or rewrite it. Not a single mushroom, a piece of sausage, maybe cheese but it was stuffed with potato and a pile of greens on top. Hot eggs piled high with cold salad not nice. Service was awful. After being told we had to wait an hour and a half just for two seats at the bar at Houston's in Pompano Beach this Tuesday night, my mother (who's 84 years young) and I had to resort to an alternate restaurant to get a our "heart-set"on fillet mignon. We were immediately seated a block north at the well-known Café Maxx and ordered a filet and the salmon. My Mom's D.O.C. is a good brew of unsweetened iced tea. She instead got some flavored iced trash that was served in a bottle that she made known wasn't to her fancy. A little more than halfway through our meals, the waitress finally came by to see how everything was, only to find my Mother and her one third eaten filet. Her plate was surrounded by trimmings and chewy bites that she had to spit out into a napkin throughout the meal. We expressed to the waitress that she ate all that she could, the parts that she was able to chew, and she replied with "OK, Ill go tell Oliver." Oliver came out but walked right past our table, never making eye contact or asking us about our experience with the filet. RUDE and uncaring about two irrelevant customers I suppose. And the hardest to swallow was the $51 tough chewy meat that was still on the bill! Shame on you Oliver. read more

Yasss, slayyyy! So vday dinner was delicious. We snagged a late reso at 930, but walked in and immediately sat at our cozy corner table. The place was not overly crowded and not filled with the usual suspects you see out on vday (i know, we are ones to talk, but you know...) the atmosphere was low key, low lit, quiet yet comfortable and approachable- plus service is on point. Anyway- on to the food and drank. There is a beautiful wine list- i selected a supertuscan by the glass for $12 served in a proper glass. OMG the tuna tartare pizza app is UHHHMAYYYZINGG. I would bathe and shower in it and eat it everyday all day until the end of time. Like death row last meal good. Its a small flat crunchy pizza on a wonton crust, with tuna tartare, ginger, wasabi mayo something or other type of sauce, caviar, green onions, etc. I got the sweet onion crusted snapper served on top of mashed potatoes with a beur blanc sauce that was quiet rich and tasty. My only complaint is that the dish was served with probably 3 green beens and about 3 melon balled carrots and zucchini. I like my veggies and the ones that were on the plate were perfect, however a decent side dish portion would be a welcome cut through the richness of this dish. The fiancé got the half bell evans chicken roasted to perfection on top of black bean sauce with avocado. He had a few bourbon old fashioneds that he loved. Desert was something i forced on myself because treat yoself! Berry gallet was a great choice. An open faced rustic pie filled with zesty and fresh flavors of berries with that perfect crust. Ice cream is served on top. I also had an espresso. The meal, service and vibe was perfection. Glad to see Cafe Maxx is still doing their thing from the days of childhood memories eating here with the 'rents- however i would like to see the berry almond basket from the 90s make a come back, just sayin! read more

My friend and I came in one night for dinner and once for brunch, we are both servers and we were absolutely floored at how good they treat their guests. I would personally come back to pompano for this restaurant alone. The country eggs Benedict is one of the best meals I had in my life, and paired with good service it was truly *chefs kiss*. Do yourself a favor, treat yourself and go to this place. Ask for Angie or Stephanie, you won't be disappointed. I really hope they get the recognition they deserve. We had brunch at cafe Maxx. Nice location. I had the BLT but it came without bacon (they brought it after with apologies). The bottomless mimosas were enjoyed but they weren't "banging". All the staff are attentive and informative, and I enjoy hanging out at the initimate bar. It has served Fort Lauderdale for many, many years, and is always one of the top spots. This is a go- to place for a very special occasion, wine tastings, cooking classes, or just because you are in the neighborhood. Tender care is given to an array of changing dishes, yet the comfortable standbys are truly memorable. The decor is cool, hip, simple, with some interesting art. But the food is the real star here. The wine list is a true wine afficionada's dream to peruse. Plus, the night I was there, they gave me half off a bottle of a special Californian Zinfandel selection. For an appetizer, the tuna caviar pizza is an amazing combination. Trust me, it sounds strange, but when the flavors mingle on the tongue, something sublime occurs. As a fish eater, order any, and they change nightly. Friends all love the meats. The sides are creative. But on to dessert...last time, I had the apple tart. Cafe Maxx is your typical secret Florida restaurant - tucked in away in a random strip mall (that was under construction when I was last there, thus making the exterior even more hidden). Point is however, this is a secret hidden gem. Like I mentioned, we came for the Dining Out promotion. Not sure how busy Cafe Maxx is regularly, but it was extra packed when we were there, tables felt cramped together and volume was very loud - however that didn't stop us from enjoying a delicious meal! Honestly.....the only way to describe this culinary surprise is "5 Star Restaurant in a 4 Star atmosphere." Let me start by saying.....the cuisine is genius. If you want to treat your taste buds...Cafe Maxx is a must. No joke.....they easily compete with the best when it comes to cuisine. The only reason for 4 stars? Cafe Maxx sits in the corner of a plaza strip... in a remodeled....but slightly bland "fine diner" atmosphere. Based on food....5 stars is an understatement. I so wish the owners could just hire a designer and turn this place into the fine dining atmosphere the food really deserves. The cuisine deserves a better setting..... We ordered the Caviar appetizer and the tuna sashimi pizza we had heard so much about....NOW I GET IT!!!! This is where the beige walls don't even matter anymore because Cafe Maxx sets the culinary standards so high that it doesn't even matter. The Caviar was exceptional....from presentation to taste. The tuna sashimi "pizza" is heavenly. Thin crispy lavash-style bread with fresh sashimi topping and.....well.....you have to try it to understand. For dinner: Stone Crabs. The stone crabs were fresh... served with Maxx's Specialty Key Lime Sauce (on the side). The sauce was a little tangy-sweet...not for me....so the hostess who was very attentive, immediately brought hot melted butter. Ahhhhh......now it was perfect. Cafe Maxx is a neighborhood gem. Although I wish the setting was more...possibly modern or a little Miami.....??? (Or maybe even had a theme).I must say that the cuisine and service more than make up for it. We ate here on Friday night 5/9/14. It's a very upscale but casual restaurant. The atmosphere was very casual but very very nice. The service was excellent & the waitstaff was very friendly & very attentive. Lastly the food was off the hook, beyond excellent. My girlfriend had foie gras, braised boneless short rib of beef & creme brûlée. I had a fillo pastry purse filled with crab & andouille sausage, twin sliced duck breast with braised collard greens with bacon & onion & a cheddar flan & butterscotch bread pudding with sea salt caramel ice cream. The weren't any bad bites at our table. Our meal was exquisite. Plus we had 2 bottles of sparkling water. Total bill before tip was $160.00. We will be back. read more

Widely considered one of the best restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, I wasn't overly impressed with Cafe Maxx. I've eaten there twice, once for dinner and once for brunch. For brunch I ordered the burger which was solid. The bun was very large and greasy. For dinner I ordered a fish dish and my wife ordered a chicken dish. Both were just average, especially considering the high prices. I agree that Cafe Maxx is a good restaurant, but based on my experiences, I don't consider it one of the best. read more

Fabulous food, amazing service and perfect ambiance. European style, not what you would expect in Pompano and Ft Lauderdale area. A bit on the expensive side but if you truly want to have a great meal, it is well worth it. The blue cheese, pine crusted rack of lamb was to die for as well as the Tuna and Wahoo Sashimi to start, very light but so tasty. My partner had the three peppercorn filet mignon with the 3 cheese au gratin potato, as well, Florida stone crabs with a key lime dipping sauce, amazzzzzing. Wine list selection is excellent, you can also ask which wine would be best suited to your meal. Four of us went to dinner last night. The other 3 people had never heard of the restaurant but I had been there many times years ago. It still had good ratings so I book it. It was crowded. We sat in a booth and were immediately met by a friendly waitress. We ordered drinks (not expensive) and then gave our order for the food (very expensive). The other couple ordered a Caesar Salad which they split. Maybe there was enough for two forks worth of salad.....I can't imagine what a full portion would be. Within a reasonable time our main dishes were served. Two ordered the Shrimp Scampi, on ordered the Sword Fish and I ordered the Duck. All the orders came out warm. My duck was raw even though I asked for it medium. All the dishes were taken back. Immediately 3 of the dishes were brought back hot. One of the shrimp dishes didn't come with the others. We waited at least 10-15 minutes and kept asking where is the other dish. It only needed to be heated. They kept saying they were working on it. After that amount of time the person who was waiting said she didn't want the dish anymore since we were all finished with ours. I called over the owner. Told him what happened and his answer was "It doesn't look like you finished your meals". He appeared to be speechless and for someone in business 38 years you would think he would know what to say. The waitress said she would take off that meal ( I would hope so since that person never ate her meal). The owner offered nothing. Not even an apology. More of an argument. So with high expectations the evening was a bust. Blame the kitchen and the owner! read more

As you can see the previous reviews, this place is amazing! Started off with some cali wine, a very small winery out of Anderson Valley. Ordered the Tuna Pizza and Calamary, both were amazing! My wife and I could probably be called Foie Gras snobs, and it was amazing here. Probably in the Top 3 we've ever had and we've eaten it in some of the best restaurants in the world. Good (not great) food. Decent enough I've returned a few times. Not more often because I live in Miami. That said, service matters!!! When I call ahead and I'm told you open at 5:30 PM and that despite your cooking class I can sit at the bar and eat, that is what I expect! Not unreasonable. Here is a tip: if you're having a special event, put your special hours of operation on the door so people know. Also, better inform your staff on what to say to customers when they call or show up! The hostess just ignored me. The bartender did not do much better. Despite being the bearer of bad news, he was completely unapologetic. Now that is what I call Service!! Don't ever eat at Cafe Maxx in Pompano. We went to Cafe Maxx last night for one of my bf bday. I had scallops (which is know to be a signature dish). As soon as I finished with my meal I felt sick. This sort of things can happen in any place. The upsetting part is the way Cafe Maxx Management (Darrel Broek) has reacted. Amongst all it was a $1000 meal for our part ($100 plus pp). In small restaurants, a hole in the wall restaurant, they would at least give you your refund for what you eat and an apology. Cafe Maxx reacted rudely, non apologetic and neglected to take fault. Never eating at this place!!! Not worth it. Specially in South Florida when you have tons of options. I can believe this is restaurants claims to be "fined dining" . I had the worse experience with the manager, Darrel Broek. He neglected to take action with my food poisoning. I was vomiting in their bathroom. What more proof do they want? The next day during a phone conversation. Darrel even said "food poisoning does not happen soon after eating, speak with your doctor". My answer : " my boyfriend is a Doctor." Email followed: Food poisoning does occur right away. Since Mr. Darell has inaccurate information please contact CDC poison control. As food poisoning can occur right away. And advise which doctor will tell you otherwise. There are numerous of toxin based food borne disease that can occur in less than two hours and even cases less than 45minutes. Cafe Maxx has seen better days. We've been here many times over the years, but first time in awhile. The interior now looks worn, the servers are not dressed appropriately for this price point, the bar crowd is allowed to spill over to the restaurant so we had loud groups hovering over our booth. I'd heard the rave reviews for years, and even though Cafe Maxx is quite close to me, I never got around to trying it until recently. I'm so glad I finally managed to visit! I took my mother here during Dine Out Lauderdale, where quite a few high-end restaurants participate by offering $35 prix-fixe menus during the month of October. Cafe Maxx by far had the widest selection to choose from, and you got four courses instead of the usual three. My mom and I ordered identical meals, except for our desserts. We were brought a basket of bread (an assortment of different breads and crackers), and we both chose the kobe beef meatballs for our first course. They were served in a tangy, spicy Asian sauce with wasabi mashed potatoes. Oh. My. God. You could just put an entire plate of those in front of me and I'd be the happiest girl on earth. One of the tastiest morsels I've ever had the pleasure of eating. I would give just about anything for that recipe. Our second course was a Caesar salad, followed by our petite filet mignons served with au gratin potatoes. Here is where they lost a star from me. I ordered my steak medium well, and it came out rare... not even close to what I ordered. Meanwhile, my mom ordered medium and hers was cooked perfectly. So I sent the steak back and waited a few minutes for them to cook it longer. They brought it back to the table, and this time it was medium rare. I sent it back again... and by the time I got it back the third time, my mom had finished her meal (she wanted to wait, but I told her not to let her own food get cold). Once cooked properly, the steak was great... but I was fairly disappointed that they were so far off what I had ordered. As for the au gratin potatoes (a dish I normally love)... these were terrible. My mom at hers and thought they were fine, but they had the strangest taste that I couldn't stand. For dessert, I chose the bread pudding, while my mom decided on the cheesecake. We both agreed the bread pudding was fantastic, but the cheesecake... not so much. Overall, I'm very glad I experienced this place, and I would definitely come again... keeping my fingers and toes crossed that those meatballs will be on the menu! read more

This restaurant has terrific food and atmosphere and everything to the linen on the tables feels so fresh. Parking can be valet or free in the strip mall BUT the valet actually instructed us after we Self Parked that "if [we didn't] mind" to please move our car to the other (north side) of the lot instead of parking on the south side of said lot. Needless to say, our night began with having to move our car to accomodate the valet. It was my first time here and a weekend night. We asked for dinner recommendations and were told about Maxx's "house" onion crusted Snapper. The hostess got drinks and the busboy brought a bread basket and No Butter. The hostess forgot the lemon garnish requested but that is okay. There is olive oil (kinda' like butter) already at the table. I read on Yelp afterwards that, here, Butter is on request. To be honest, I did not need the extra calories from butter but I was curious as to why it did not come with our bread ... now I know. What is interesting about bread service these days, I should note, is that few restaurants still offer it (bread service). When I saw the busboy later on I asked for lemon and he brought some. Not a big deal. I actually ordered a delightful dish of POLENTA DUSTED SCALLOPS, couscous, and vegetables. I have a feeling that my trying the house onion encrusted snapper and other offerings in the near future is on the horizon. Love the inviting feel of the bar at the entrance and the open kitchen, although guests can (and do) overhear things from the kitchen that we aren't meant to hear. Makes for a fun night though! I like that Pompano Beach has a top notch restaurant like this where casual dress is permissible. Carla, the server, did an outstanding job with table service and has a very pleasant demeanor. Do tell your friends that this spot rocks and be sure to start dining here if you are not already doing so. It is particularly affordable to dine here with the LAUDERDALE DINE OUT menu offerings August (began around mid-August) thru September 30, 2016. Wow! I have a new favorite restaurant! After reading all the great reviews, I had high expectations of this place, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint!! I started with a glass of bartender-recommended Pinot noir.. Very nice! Then when seated, we ordered the pistachio-fried shrimp and the tuna app pizza! The shrimp and the fruit salsa they were upon were great, but that tuna pizza!!!! Oh my.. I could live off that appetizer! Could have eaten quite a few orders of that! We also ordered the lobster and shrimp bisque- very tasty with pieces of shrimp and lobster in it! For entrees, we ordered the twin maple duck breast and the onion crusted snapper! The duck was the most tender, tastiest duck I have ever had. It was served with raisins and sweet potato and was just divine! The onion crusted snapper was to die for!!! I repeat, to die for! I came to this place with excitement high expectations. I am sure the food is fantastic but I will never know because I will never go back there. We made reservations for a Sunday brunch here since I heard it was pretty delicious food and the pics online looked great... We were seated pretty quickly and I thought that was a good sign... 20 minutes go by and we are still sitting there, front and center for all wait staff, cooks / chefs and other staff to see quite easily... never, not once, did anyone approach us to take our order or even offer a drink while we waited... it was very disappointing and upsetting. Had the Crave menu. A few of the items were sold-out and what remained seemed very similar- for instance 2 different carpaccios. Its 3 courses but all in all not worth it. I had been looking forward to going here for a long time, but four of us had dinner and tried 5 apps, 4 main dishes and 4 deserts. None of it was good enough to make me crave going back and try the main menu. We left and went somewhere else to eat. Service was also very poor, i still gave a full tip but the waitress really only did a minimal job. All in all the most disappointed dining experience I have had in quite some time. Not because the food was bad, it wasnt. It was just blah. Very uninspiring. Went here for dinner recently as this place has a great rep even drawing clientele from Miami. I thought the food was great and the service excellent it was just the prices that were outrageous---$46 for half a chicken and $8 per Budweiser. If you have money to burn a great place if not you can get the same quality of food and a better view at Houston's for 2/3rds the price. Both have valet parking. read more
