It's so easy to get bogged down by unhealthy food when I'm on vacation but seeing Cafe Metropole's sign as I walked from my hotel to do some sightseeing was a breath of fresh air. I liked my avocado toast because it was seasoned with just salt and pepper but was filling, and fueled my final day on the island. I decided to pass on the free donuts and coffee at my hotel in favor of something healthier and it was worth it. Even though I paid $6.50 for something I could have probably made myself at home, since I was on vacay mode I didn't mind paying a little extra for the convenience and enjoyed the healthy fix. They put their breakfast burrito on a panini press so it makes the outside crispy without any of the grease from a stovetop. Meh. I read that this cafe is the "best" healthy food on the island, so popped in for lunch. Kudos to the girl working for checking on ingredients for me; that is good customer service! The avocado and sprouts were a nice touch, but the turkey was relatively flavorless. The multigrain organic bread was sweet and...fluffy. Dave's Killer Bread would be a better choice! The side salad was a nice touch. I just felt that for the price, the time spent waiting, and the anticipation based on previous reviews that it was just a meh experience. I ordered the 2 turkey sliders with bacon and chiptole mayo. It was totally worth it. The sliders came with a side of sweet potato fries. The sliders were really good and the cheese was so melted. To start off, the cafe itself has a very nice vibe to it. The environment is welcoming, great outdoor seating options with a shaded patio in the rear. They may have been calling out the wrong name for 10-15 mins? I came to check in several times the brunette staff member told me it will be called out. (I order a cb&a) I believe that's what the sandwich is called. All in all their was a miscommunication between the cashier and I, that result in my sandwich being cold. -Prices here are on the higher end, especially for a small cafe. You are paying restaurant prices here so do be aware, I totally understand the overhead is more expensive on a small island. However Catalina receives nearly 1 million tourists per year not to mention the 4000+ locals who live there. I think they can give room on the pricing structure of the menu but that's just my two cents. If I came back I'd have to skip out on this place, at least for food, the green drink on the other hand was fantastic. read more

I'm a huge fan of Caprese sandwiches, and the one at Café Metropole was just ok. They were creative in having yellow tomato instead of red, but it just wasn't all that flavorful. Some/more pesto would be good, as would prosciutto. The salad served with the sandwich was fine. My friend got a sandwich with added on avocado (upcharge). Luckily we were eating there because the kitchen didn't add avocado. The seating area at the Metropole is nice, with umbrellas to block the bright sun. read more

One downside is that the food is a little pricey for what it's worth. However, my wife ordered potato leek soup but without consulting her they substituted tomato soup because they were out of the potato leak. I'm not too picky so I traded her mine. The drinks on the menu were very non-traditional and kind of funky. My wife didn't enjoy her smoothie and my drink didn't settle well with my stomach. My son did enjoy his minty drink though. Beware the many recent Yelp reviews ... the Cafe is bribing people for good words with a sweepstakes competition. As in, "write us a five-star review and we'll enter you to win something." There many have also been a discount involved; I don't remember. Here's my personal experience: I got a Caprese sandwich and my husband got the Veggie Stack. My Caprese was possibly the greasiest sandwich I have ever eaten -- it seemed that they dunked the entire thing in oil before grilling it-- and the tomato and cheese inside was not very flavorful. But the Veggie Stack was even more bland than the Caprese. Both sandwiches came with a "salad" that was a handful of mostly-rotten mesclun mix. I ended up picking out as many of the slimy black leaves as I could and was left with about half of what was originally served. The dressing was in a little plastic cup; mine had helpfully dumped onto my sandwich as it was carried from kitchen to table. Normally I'm not a fan of super-vinegary dressings but honestly the flavor helped the otherwise bland sandwich out. read more

I was FLOORED that the woman who took our order was not the owner -- she worked herself **silly** to provide STELLAR customer service to a very long line of in-person lunch diners as well as phone orders for take-away. She really was the model of superior customer service, and then the food arrived and did *not* disappoint! EXCELLENT cobb salad and chicken salad sandwich. I'm not trying to sound cheesy, but you really could taste the love that the food was made with! Fresh ingredients and wonderfully executed, and served with sincere warmth and hospitality!
