Finally we have some delicious Jamaican food in town! We ordered food to go. They were so nice and courteous on the phone and in person when I picked up the food. We had jerk chicken, juicy and cut up just like Jerky's in Montego Bay. We also had the curried goat. It was tender and falling off the bone like it should be. We split some beef patties. Finally, someone who doesn't hold back, and gives you a flaky crust that a great beef patty deserves. I hope this place stays around for a long time! read more

Food is very fresh and very good. The oxtails was delicious and the rice and beans were O and K. The jerk chicken was one of the best I have had so far, but I'm not s fan of the coconut rice. This place is pricier than other Caribbean restaurants and for the price I feel they should give you more than they do. I will probably go again but will stick to the jerk chicken wings only. Not quite what I was expecting but I got what I asked for rice and peas. Usually when you ask for rice and peas as a person coming from another Caribbean Island you expect the peas to be combined in the rice. Well next time I will be more specific. Get on chat with Groupon now and get your money back. I have been to this place a few times sometimes it's good sometimes not so good but still I give it another chance because there are so few Caribbean restaurants in the area tonight I ordered food and I asked that the curry goat be cooked without cabbage and add potatoes. The curry goat was loaded with cabbage and the potatoes were hard and flavorless as though they were placed in as an afterthought the spinach I had asked for it to be cooked down And it was just lightly sautéed I don't really like to give bad reviews but this experience warrented it....I guess if I wanted curry goat and sautéed spinach I got to do it myself Lesson learned read more

The food here was excellent, as was the service. We ordered the Southern Hush Puppies (yum!) to start and the Vegetable Plate and Jerk Pork Sandwich. I didn't try the sandwich, but my boyfriend said it was good. The Vegetable Plate offered good options for vegetarians and the Mac n Cheese was so, SO good! The only downside was that the place was freezing, so much so that we had to keep our coats on while eating. In their defense, it's been averaging 10° these last few days and it's hard to get warm anywhere. That being said, we weren't near the door and if it weren't notably cold inside, it would've been nice to linger and maybe try dessert, as the options looked tasty. This is my first time ordering from Cafe MoBay. Pleasantly surprised as I am very particular about my Jamaican food. If I am going to eat out, it needs to be similar to how we would cook it at home or my favorite aunty; who puts her foot in her cooking : ) . My only issue is that there was way to much rice. The food was meh. I guess I'm a bit biased being of Jamaican ancestry, and from the North East Bronx where there were great JA food establishments every few blocks. I ordered two oxtail plates with a side of plantain via GrubHub. Delivery was on time which was a plus and warranted another star. The oxtail was unremarkable. The gravy had no depth. Not sure what all the Yelpers are ooohing and aaahhing about. The rice and peas were bland. It needed more salt and seasoning over all. I tasted no escallion, scotch bonnet, or coconut. Venue is very clean, tastefully decorated with good Jamaican music playing in the background and service was excellent. Rarely does a place open that exceeds all expectations. I stumbled across Cafe MoBay while reading the local Yelp one day. Having been to Jamaica with my wife and friends I had high hopes but I tempered my jubilation because most places try and fail to get anywhere near what one would consider authentic. Every day is a patty day as they say in Jamaica and holy hell are their beef patties good! Crisp crust, perfectly seasoned beef in the middle. These were better than any we picked up in Negril or Montego bay. Next came the staple : Cafe jerk chicken with coconut rice and candied yams. Very tasty. It would give Jerky's a run for its money. Finally came the one dish that I will judge this place forever on. Curry goat. You'd forgive most places for offering a mere glimpse of what this dish should be but MoBay blew it out of the water. Perfectly slow cooked goat in a curry to die for, spicy enough to wake your suburban ass up but delicate enough to serve in a restaurant with a much higher star rating. Did I mention I did all of this takeout? The price is on point as are the portion sizes. Oh and calaloo!!!! 4.5/5 I am all for supporting the local business so when I heard about Cafe Mobay opening up on the north side of Bloomfield, I made it my mission to have a meal there ASAP. Came in last night for dinner with my boyfriend and it was pretty empty. A few customers came in to order to-go so we had the dining area to ourselves. We got the crab cakes over mango chutney for our appetizer and got the cafe jerk chicken with coconut rice as our entrees. I got the sweet plantains for my side and he tried out the callaloo . Let me tell ya, I would eat an entire jar of that mango chutney. The crab cakes were a fair portion for an appetizer and the flavor was pretty standard for crab cakes. Wish it was a little warmer, though! We had every last bit of the mango chutney. Mmm, great way to start the meal. Then came the jerk chicken.... the star of the show!!! The amount of flavor packed into every single bite was ridiculous. The chef passed by quickly and I couldn't help but tell him how great the food was! We didn't want it to end. They give a pretty hefty portion of chicken and it never got boring. My sweet plantains were so yummy and complemented the dish well. Stole a bite of the callaloo and loved it. I truly hope Cafe Mobay gets more and more recognition as time progresses. Definitely adding it to our list of go-to's in town. Will come back soon to try out the weekend brunch! read more

I find that when I try these dishes I am usually disappointed with the meat to bone ratio. But these dishes were plentiful and not too many bones. I love the food here. I don't like spicy food or drinks with ginger, but they are great too if you like that type of food. If you don't like spicy food or ginger in your drinks (in the sorrel and mango punch), I recommend avoiding dishes with jerk sauce/seasoning and the meat patties. The mango punch is great but I can't stand the ginger in it and hopefully they can have a non-ginger option. The chef makes the best oxtail and bread pudding. Everything was just right..From start to finish. Oxtail Rice & Peas was delicious. I had the codfish cakes as an appetizer the sauce drizzle was like nothing I've had before. I enjoyed it. My wife and I have ordered take out here two days in a row. We had the jerk chicken, jerk chicken wings, pepper pot soup, oxtail, cod fritters and mac and cheese. Our family really enjoyed the food.
