Had a Jonny Ayoh as well as an egg and cheese with their spicy tomato jam plus a hash brown and they were PHENOMENAL. I will be dreaming about the spicy tomato jam. I didn't check) -- definitely recommend ordering ahead, I had an order of 5-6 sandwiches ahead of me and waited about 20 minutes for my 1 sandwich; I requested oil & vinegar on the side instead of the sandwich because I wanted to save the sandwich for a bit later and didn't want to bread to get soggy, but the guy behind the counter told me he didn't realize I wanted it on the side and he had already put it on the sandwich, so, that sucked :( sort of ruined it for me; and, lastly, I'm sorry, but this sandwich was not worth over $18. It may be unusual to be disgusted by sandwiches that are so large as to be impossible for one person to eat, stuffed with food that ranges from good to not soexisl. There's too much bread in the rolls and not enough tomato sauce in the hot subs. The prices are outrageous and reflect the too-large serving portiins. The sandwich makers, it's either their way or the highway. It's a small place with limited in-dining options but we took our sandwiches to the nearby park on a nice day. As a long-time Montclair native, I've seen a lot of businesses come and go at 197 Bellevue Ave but I'm glad Sparo's Deli is here to stay. It's a wonderful sandwich shop with kind and professional folks that run the place. I ordered the Nicky Boy to go the last time I stopped in. It's a hefty, carefully crafted sandwich with turkey, roast beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, sun-dried tomato spread, banana peppers, and mayo served on fresh semolina bread. The banana peppers were the standout to me. They provided a nice ration of heat to complement the turkey, roast beef, and tomato spread. The bread is good but the ingredients need serious help. They use the cheapest, most plastic tasting Swiss cheese available. Expect to spend 10 minutes checking out your own order on a computer. The negative attitude is not worth it, especially with so many gourmet sandwiches shops steps away. Will not be going back. read more

Great sandwich spot; I love Italian-style sandwiches and, I must say, this one has to be super high up there in terms of quality. I really recommend their MIKEY BOY which is an eggplant cutlet sandwich; the eggplant was cut thinly yet had a nice body and good little crisp to it, the swiss cheese and yellow peppers going really well with the eggplant. If you're into spicy, I recommend the ANGRY LOU~ the soppressata and hot pepper spread add some heat (although if you're used to much more spicy spreads, you might want to ask them to really put on the spread since theirs runs comparatively mild). Overall, they have good quality ingredients and they're very good at what they make. What was also super great about Sparo's was their super friendly staff! We were about to walk into the shop when my two-year-old tripped over himself (as clumsy toddlers sometimes do) and fell on his face. The cashier saw him fall over and came over to check on him and even gave him cookies, which was so incredibly kind of her. This place would've had our business either way since their sandwiches are bomb, but for her to do that was beyond considerate. Can't wait to return again and again! read more

I ordered delivery from sparos for lunch and it came pretty quickly on a weekday. I ordered the the sparo and mama cici. The sparo (basically an Italian) is usually my go to at delis but I felt my sandwich was lacking oil and vinegar and they over did it on the oregano. I loved mama cici. It was delicious. I've tried it with the broccoli rabe and without it and definitely prefer it without. The sandwiches are massive and can definitely be shared. read more

Food is great, customer service not so good. I ordered on Caviar and was told when I arrived that they don't take Caviar. (Note that this is one of the options presented to you when you click "order online" on their page.) Not only was my food not ready, but I was told that I had to pay for it again. I was told with an attitude "that they can't just give me a sand which for free." Very frustrating to hear when I of course already paid and had done nothing wrong. When they finally located my order, they gave me my sandwich without an apology or acknowledgement of their mistake. I visited Sparo's for the first time back in March. After getting some help from the staff, I went with the Mama Cici and the Kiki Girl. I forget which was which, but both were good. I liked the duke's Mayo on them but must admit the sandwiches were a little dry. One had fried long hots on it, which I'd never seen before. Just wish there were more. My expectations were very high coming in based on recommendations. Because of that i was slightly disappointed, but if I were nearby I'd return again without hesitation. Note: This review is based upon my single experience as a customer and the one item I purchased. Overall impressions of the business are therefore extrapolated. I ordered the namesake "premium" sandwich called The Sparo, described as "Genoa salami, imported ham, mortadella, Calabrian chicken, sliced mozzarella, lettuce, tomato, onion, dried oregano, oil and vinegar...on 12" Italian or Seeded Semolina." I ordered this through their website for pick-up the following day. The total came to $17.66, nearly $3 of which was the suggested tip, which I voluntarily paid even though it was a take-out order. Total would have been $14.82 otherwise, including the state sales tax. For some reason I was anticipating a really amazing, legitimately "premium" sandwich. I think I had this expectation because of the combination that Sparo's is primarily a sandwich shop, their menu seems creative and uses the word "premium," prices are at the high end, and other Yelp reviews are overall pretty positive. Man was I wrong. First thing I noticed after getting home was the bread. Not the seeded semolina I expected and was looking forward to, but regular Italian. As previously mentioned, I ordered through their website, which did not present a choice of bread, nor the ability to optionally add any comments or special requests about my order. Next thing I noticed was how tidy and narrow the sandwich was. It was indeed 12" long, but looked light on ingredients. Based upon my extremely extensive personal experience, premium Italian sandwiches costing $14+ are overstuffed with distinctions between the various ingredients that you can both see and taste. At the same time I was noticing that the ingredients were not what should be called "premium." They were all sliced cold cuts and none were house-prepared. I expected at least the chicken would be freshly grilled or breadcrumb-fried, and the mozzarella to be generous pieces of the fresh kind. Looking back at the menu I noticed no mention of what deli brands they use, such as Boar's Head or specific Italian imports. Based upon the lack of distinct flavors in my sandwich, and mushy texture, I conclude that the brands aren't very high quality. The sandwich overall tasted just meh and even had a slightly off, sour taste, from which ingredient I wasn't sure. Oh, and it was missing salami. Bottom line. The Sparo is nothing special. I'd categorize it as the sort of sub you'd get pre-made at a rest area, or some run-of-the-mill pizzeria or sandwich shop. No part of it was high-quality or worthy of its pricetag. And, even if The Sparo knocked my taste buds on their butts, I'd still have been disappointed that it was given to me in a disposable plastic bag instead of paper. Seems out-of-step with Montclair. I know that Montclair is a notoriously difficult town to run a successful small business in. Commercial rents are insane and it is really hard to sell prepared foods at reasonable prices without cutting corners. Unfortunately, I suspect Sparo's hasn't yet found the critical value balance between quality and price, at least not for the item I selected. Maybe other items strike this more successfully. I might give them one more opportunity someday. In the meantime, I will continue to find it at consistently great local alternatives such as Belgiovine's and Nicolo's. read more

Ok so for lunch a couple of days ago we decided to order sandwiches from Sparo's for the two of us and our kids aged 2 and 4. We ordered a chicken parm, a meatball parm, the Sparo, and a sandwich with grilled chicken, mozzarella, arugula and peppers. We also ordered a macaroni salad and potato salad. The sandwiches are gigantic and delicious! Bread was awesome and honestly I can't decide which of the four was the best. My wife and kids barely put a dent in the monster sized subs so I've been happily eating leftovers for the last couple of days. My kids loved the macoroni salad and the potato salad was really good too. Finally finished all four subs tonight and decided to post this review! Sorry for ordering on Uber but juggling kids while the wife was out, you know how it goes. We did order a couple of times in person right as the pandemic was starting out last year and I remember the staff being beyond nice especially to my kids. Excellent addition to the area! I was able to brave the snow this past Saturday to get my first taste. I got a couple sandwiches to go, along with a few slices of the "Drunken Sicilian" Pizza. Sandwiches were on great bread and stuffed with quality ingredients. I tried, "The Sparo" (Genoa Salami, Imported Ham, Mortadella, Calabrian Chicken, Fresh Mozzarella, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Dried Oregano, Oil and Vinegar) and "The Dani Girl" (Chicken and Eggplant Parmesan, Marinara, Fresh Mozzarella, Basil, Fresh Ricotta). On "The Sparo", I had asked to substitute the Calabrian Chicken for Prosciutto but I think that the Prosciutto was simply added to it. Also the Fresh Mozzerella seemed to be replaced by Provolone but I'm not complaining about those, I still enjoyed it 100%. Next time I would ask for extra on the vegetables as the sandwich was very meat heavy and could've used more balance. Maybe I would add some hot peppers next time. The 12" roll was perfect; fresh, crusty, but soft enough on the inside. "The Dani Girl" had a huge stack of fresh chicken cutlets & fried eggplant, covered in their tomato sauce with plenty of cheese. The round roll held everything together perfectly, and just like the 12", was fresh. I had originally planned my visit just to get some sandwiches, but after seeing their "Drunken Sicilian" pizza on Instagram all week; I knew I had to get a couple of slices. They looked good and tasted amazing! The crust is thick but airy, perfumed with good olive oil; and topped lightly with their tomato sauce and cheeses. Do yourself a favor and get extra. Pop it in the oven at 400F until the top starts to sizzle or enjoy at room temp. For me, no visit would be complete without some. Counter service was friendly, plenty of samples were offered.
