I had my first brunch in Pittsburgh at Cafe Moulin with a friend in town. Cafe Moulin is an attractive neighborhood joint serving Turkish-inspired food. You can get regular breakfast/brunch dishes such as omelet or french toast, but it's not your regular breakfast/brunch thanks to the Turkish tweaks. The Turkish crepe is unique and delicious: the Sofia I ordered came with a tasty spicy-flavored crepe. I'm determined to try different flavors in the near future. Service is okay maybe slightly understaffed on weekends, similar to many over-crowded brunch spots across the country. read more

It's really sad when you've eaten at a place for years & out of no where the quality of service plummets. 1st the service was less than mediocre! our waitress walked away too quickly and had a laissez faire demeanor with helping choose off the menu to accommodate little children, then having a fly in our water and the amount of fruit they gave with a meal. A manager came over about our complaint and could've cared less! Like, do u wanna work there? I later looked and saw that they do give small amounts of fruit but they took zero pride in presentation. The whole vibe was uninviting. This is a place I used to dream about and rush to the next morning. I'm annoyed I wasted my time and $$. I came here a few times with both family and friends, and I think it's a very good place for a nice brunch with a cozy atmosphere. The menu does seem to be slightly limited for brunch - it's mostly known for their french toasts, crepes, and omelettes. But I love how each one tastes! I admit their sausage is very salty but the toast balances it out very well. I love how their french toast isn't overly sweet, and if you get the nutella crepe - the amount of nutella is very generous. I think that the portion seems a little small for its price, but it definitely still fills me up until my next meal. I suggest going with a friend if you're in the area! Service: It's funny, how the this one rude server actually yelped this place- praising it and all. Really, girl, really? Do better on your hospitality. She even took our order late. We already knew what to get while we were waiting. Besides her- the other server was sooo freakin nice! He was attentive and hospitable during our meal. Wish I gave him the tips personally. Food: The crepes were on point for me. I was soo hungry for breakfast and the Bristol filled me up till dinner time. Their chai tea latte was good too but a tad bit too sweet. Great location off of Walnut with a good variety of breakfast / brunch items. I went with a friend on the earlier side of a Sunday morning and got seated right away. However the server was extremely short with us and we felt pressure to finish up and gtfo. I understand being busy and needing to turn tables but we were not fiddling around. Overall the food tasted good. The Cafe Mocha Latte was warm and aesthetic. The bittersweet chocolate complimented the coffee. The Omelette was filling but the turkey sausage was more spiced than I prefer. I was glad I added avocado to my Omelette. The side of fresh fruit was a nice touch. My friend ordered the Nutella Crepe. It is pretty and tastes sweet but she said it was too sweet (Nutella inside and on the outside). I recommended splitting the savory and sweet Crepe with a friend so you get the best of both worlds. :) Waitress was nice and patient when answering my questions. So so so so awesome. Best place for breakfast/brunch in the entire area. Omlette crepes are to die for, along with any other savory sides of meat or posh toast. I personally prefer the Bristol or the Sofia. Sweet crepes are fantastic too. Just havn't gotten them as much. They have great coffee and fresh squeezed juices as well. Really can't go wrong! This is a staple in Shadyside. A little hidden gem, and once you try them once, you fall in love. It's a small place with a great atmosphere, serving French style, light breakfasts. Prices are fair! Plates are French, so not as much food. But with good prices, I've never left not happy! read more

I have been visiting off and on ordering the exact same crepe (marseille) since this place opened. Today I ordered it and I had overcooked scrambled eggs thrown on top of a crepe with watered down harissa sauce!! This place has definitely gone downhill. I am used to having a nice crepe filled with a layer of perfectly scrambled eggs, meat, and sauce. I received an unstuffed crepe with all the filling thrown on the top. Such a cute place! My friend and I went for a quick Sunday brunch in Shadyside and it was our first time dining at Cafe Moulin! They have a great variety of sweet and savory crepes, omelettes, and other breakfast foods! I ordered the Alaskan crepe, which was filled with cheese, spinach, crème with herbs and pesto, and topped with smoked salmon. The Alaskan also came with a side salad, that had a great champagne vinaigrette! I also ordered an apple cider tea. My friend ordered the delicious Barcelona French Toast that came with strawberries, cream, and syrup! She also loved the Chocolate Mocha she ordered for her drink! I would highly recommend all of these dishes! I would also recommend either going earlier in the week (on a weekday) or calling ahead to reserve a table, we went around 10:30am, and had about a 15 minute wait outside the building. Definitely a plan ahead type of experience, but there are many shops nearby to check out during your wait! Overall, a great meal and a great experience! read more

I thought this cafe was the cutest thing. I wish I could rate it 4.5 stars bc that is what it deserves. It was a little hidden when I was looking for it but I think that adds to the character. I loved the ambiance and the aesthetic of the cafe. It was very rustic and felt very authentic. All the waitresses I believe were French which made for an even more authentic experience. I had the classic french toast and added strawberries to my meal. The french toast was cooked perfectly, not too sweet. Great place! We were able to get in before the crowd on a Sunday morning and had our choice of tables. The staff was very friendly and the food came in just a few minutes. Great place for brunch in Shadyside! It's been recently updated and the atmosphere inside is really cute! There's also outside seating on the sidewalk. We went on a Sunday around 10 and didn't have to wait very long for a table which was a great! (It definitely was busier by the time we left though). I got the walnut street French toast which was delicious! My boyfriend got the avocado toast and I loved the harissa aioli. We also got a Nutella crepe with banana which was very yummy! Small, intimate, and hip brunch place with great crepes. I was there on a Friday afternoon and there were only a few other people there. It's small but cozy and the friendly, attentive service made it a wonderful experience. The Halle Berry crepe was good--sweet and smothered in Nutella--and will surely satisfy any sweet tooth. I also tried their salad, which was average and nothing really special (apparently, the goat cheese is quite unique but I am unfortunately not a fan of the strong goat-y aftertaste of goat cheese). But the waiter did inform us that they are updating the menu soon to include more salads so keep an eye out after around Christmas '17! Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Cafe Moulin and will probably return to check out their revamped menu. read more

One of my favorite french brunch places in pittsburgh!!! I've tried several of their crepes and french toasts, and they've never failed me once! When I think of crepes, I think of a sweet dessert so I've only had one savory crepe here - the Alaskan - but even that one daring switch to savory wasn't a bad try at all. I love their french toasts the most, though. They're as fluffy as can get and never too sweet. I've tried their regular french toast with added strawberries on top, and during my most recent visit I ordered the Amsterdam French Toast. It came with turkish sausages, two eggs and a side of maple syrup. It was the perfect mix of sweet and savory. There's a rustic yet modern vibe to this little cafe. All the workers and servers are extremely friendly and always give the best service. They all seem like family, which makes me smile when I see their happy interactions in the business. read more

I didn't know I liked french toast until I tried Cafe Moulin's! For breakfast I'm usually a sweet over savory kinda gal, so I opted for the WALNUT ST. FRENCH TOAST. It was not too sweet at all.. so yummy.. I did add strawberries on top too! There doesn't seem to be much seating, so I could see wait time being a problem because it seems to be a great breakfast/brunch spot. Good thing I came on a Tuesday morning so there wasn't a problem, but a decent amount of people came in during the time I was eating. Overall I would give Cafe Moulin 3.66 stars. Two of the three dishes that I was able to try were 4 star dishes with the third being a solid 3 star dish. The best was the walnut street french toast. Creamy bri add a depth to the dish that is wonderfully mixed with walnuts, granola, and maple butter. I also enjoyed the bristol as a delicious savory crepe. The bechamel with the avacado add a nice creaminess that is well balanced with tart goat gouda. The third item we had was the sofia savory crepe. Overall we thought it had the potential to be really good but the meat was dry and over cooked as were the eggs. The harissa sauce had the potential to provide needed moisture, but there just wasn't enough of it. read more

I went in by myself after the brunch rush (aka there were open tables around me) and they could not have made it clearer that I wasn't wanted. I had to ask for my coffee after tables seated after me got theirs, the food runner basically threw my food in front of me and didn't bother to notice I had no cutlery, and, on top of all that, the kitchen seems allergic to seasoning because it was unbelievably bland. Two stars only because the coffee was good but absolutely do not recommend. read more

I've been to Cafe Moulin several times and each time I've enjoyed my experience! The food is always amazing and the service does a great job checking up throughout your meal. One thing to take into consideration is seating. It's a small restaurant, so if you're with a group more than 2 you will most likely wait for a table. Plus you will not be seated until everyone is present. For me, I've only gone in groups of 2 and I've been seated within 5 minutes of arriving. read more

Unfortunate Disappointment: My son and his girlfriend (both Pitt students) were excited to take our family to Café Moulin for breakfast yesterday. Knowing there were steps to enter and that I use a wheelchair, my son was not concerned at all since there are generally tables outside as seen in their picture. It was a beautiful sunny day and we arrived anxious to sample the delicious food they had been telling us about. Interestingly, there was only one table outside with one chair. My son and his girlfriend went inside and explained that our family of six would like to eat outside. The friendly server begged their pardon and stated that he was unable to set up any tables outside. The server seemed very uncomfortable and it became obvious why when my son inquired with the owner about tables. The owner apparently was quite nasty exclaiming that he had no time to put up tables. My son further explained that one of the guests was in a wheelchair and could not come inside. The owner escalated and just got nastier. My son's girlfriend asked politely if he understood that he was obliged to make a reasonable accommodation at which point the owner dismissed them both and walked away. This certainly doesn't make their food bad, we just thought you should know. read more
