It was a rainy cold gray day in March. Pho sounded like just a thing to beat the weather. So the three of us all went for Pho at café nhan. I had the beef, and my two companions both picked the beef short ribs. The bowls were just massive. This is probably the biggest bowl of Pho I have ever ordered. There was a very reasonable amount of meat and vegetables. The amount of noodles was way more than generous. We agreed the broth was flavorful and possibly the best part of the pho. I was the only one who managed to come close to finishing my bowl. My companions boxed their leftovers and left happy and full with enough leftovers for a substantial dinner. We showed up at about 1 PM on a weekday. The tables were less than full. Although the server requested that we be seated at a table for four and leave the table for six for other potential customers. We all thought that was probably just wishful thinking given the time and the weather. Service was attentive and quick. At this time of day, the cafe was quiet. The prices were very reasonable, given the large and generous portions.
Food is excellent. Not many places served good bun bo hue. So, it is nice to have restaurant that offer other than the traditional pho. I also enjoyed the bun rieu, especially the crab meatball. The pho dat biet, I ordered it for my daughters. It is the traditional pho. It is nothing special. I probably prefer this from other pho places since it is pricier here. Fried wonton and summer rolls are ok. I didnt have any, my daughters finished them all. We also ordered Vietnamese coffee, excellent, and the yogurt drink (okay). Conclusion: will be back for the bun ho hue and bun rieu
Rainy day calls for noodle soups, though we would have eaten here either way! We came under the recommendation of a friend, who is our resident pho expert. We found parking a couple blocks away. They were already busy at 10:30AM (they open at 10AM!), and they were packed when we left. They have about 10 small tables. The service is very friendly and quick. I thought we ordered the Goi Cuon Nem Nuong (Fermented Pork Summer Roll), but it looks like we got the Goi Cuon Thit Nuong (Marinated Pork Summer Roll), as it had fish sauce instead of the peanut sauce (did not notice it at the time). Either way, it held together well. There is a good balance of the ingredients, and the fish sauce amped up the flavor. Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet had such good flavor. It had the right amount of spice and lemongrass flavor. I love the clear bowls. The blood cubes were the perfect texture. The assortment of meats were well cooked and generously portioned. The noodles were very filling! We got an order of the Bun Bo Hue to go, and it was packaged well (cardboard on the bottom to help balance the containers. The soup was in a separate container from the noodles & toppings). It survived the long journey home and heated up well. I will definitely be back if I'm in the area!
We trekked all the way out there from the heart of city center in philly. The restaurant is small, maybe 8 tables or so? Depending on how many parties are there. We put in the orders for pho and they came out pretty quickly. I got the pho dac biet (basically pho with everything in it, brisket , meatballs, tripe, etc). The broth was delicious, clear and clean. There was no residue and was amazing. The meats inside were great. The noodles were a little bit more chewy than I am used to, but still tasted great. My hubby got the bun bo hue, which is supposed to be a specialty. He loved it. I was not too much a fan because it is spicy and because they use white round noodles instead of the traditional pho noodles.
Restaurant was busy as always but we were still seated quickly. Place gives a very cozy vibe. Great place to hang with friends and or family. My usual go to is Bun Ca Riga (chicken curry) but was feeling adventurous so I ordered Hu Tieu / Mi Bo Hue. The meal mixed with the house special chili sauce was fantastic. The broth was very savory and refreshing. The brisket melted in my mouth. Loved every bite!
Wow!! This spot was delicious, provided great portion sizes, and was fast! The restaurant is quaint and fits a handful of tables, but it has a homey feel. The pho I got was very good! I wouldn't say it is my favorite pho spot ever (which is actually out in the suburbs) but it is my favorite of the three places I've tried in the city.
Cafe Nhan is a small, cozy restaurant best known for its Bun Bo Hue and pho. I found it to be noodle-forward and of large portions. --- I dined at Cafe Nhan on a weekday for dinner as a small party of two. We were seated immediately. As individuals with allergies, we had a good laugh when we saw the windows wide open on the cool, breezy day. Note should be taken if you also have allergies that all the windows may be open to enjoy a nice day. As we made the trek for their oxtail pho listed on their website, it was a bit of a letdown when we were informed upon seating that the website was very old and had not been updated in years (since they lost access). So, I'd rely on other reviews for their most up-to-date menu and pricing. Instead, we ordered the Nhan's Wings, Com Thit Nuong (marinated grilled pork over rice), and Pho Dac Biet. We found everything was definitely made fresh, and everything came out PIPING hot. The wings had good texture and weren't too dry, but we wished there was more seasoning. We added eggs on top of the marinated grilled pork pieces over rice. This dish was pretty good (if not too sweet), but the eggs were well-done and not runny at all. The pho had very few pieces of meat (only 1-2 pieces of each different type of meat) but there was a ginormous portion of noodles. It is definitely a good pick for anyone craving a very noodle-forward dish, and the broth was very beefy. Overall, all portion sizes were rather large and we finished our entrees but had to take our wings home, so one entree per person seems to be the right size. Our service was very quick and fast, and they checked up on us often. They try their best to accommodate any food allergies. They also take credit card, but cash is preferred. We enjoyed our meal at Cafe Nhan and only learned later they are known for their Bun Hue. We would definitely go back to try it.
This small South Philly spot has become my new favorite for comfort Vietnamese food! I visited an hour before closing on a weekday as a party of two, and it was still fully packed with other hungry, yet satisfied tables. We sampled different items from the menu, all of which were very affordable. The Dac Biet bahn mi was a big hit, with its fatty pork and delicious pickled veggies on the traditional baguette roll. We also ordered a chicken one to go that was good, but the pork reigns supreme. The pho was also very filling, and came in a large broth well worth its serving size. What pleasantly surprised me most, however, were the chicken wings that were incredibly flavorful, fried to a great crisp, and its crunch being a wonderful complement as we finished the soup. Service was also excellent, and it was clear that regular visitors were treated like family in the small, but mighty restaurant. We received our food quickly, and were frequently checked in on during the meal. A definite visit for fans of Vietnamese cuisine, and I will certainly be back to keep trying more.
My experience with Vietnamese food has primarily been with pho and Bahn mi, but this spot changed that for me. I saw bun rieu on the menu and was so intrigued by the description I had to try and I'm so happy I did. The soup was super hearty and packed with flavor. I loved the crab meatballs as well. Will definitely be on the lookout for this in the future. Service was fast and super friendly. The spots pretty small, so not much seating.
Really good place for bun Bo hue! The broth is really an explosion of flavor with the spice! The portion is quite big with lots of meat. I just wish the noodles were less stiff, and the onions sliced thinner. The service is very fast and the staff are very pleasant. Parking is a little difficult and the space is a bit small but the wait is not long. Would definitely come back for their bun Bo!
This place exceeded my expectations as I'm spoiled by amazing Vietnamese food in the Bay Area. BBH is my usual order at any Vietnamese restaurant because I like to see how it compares to one of my favorite spots. Surprisingly, this place is pretty high on the list for me and is even better than some back home. I ordered the BBH with pork blood and it was flavorful and had a kick to it! I find it rare now a days because most places don't spice theirs as much but this definitely has the spice. Meat was very tender and juicy. Wish they added more cha Lau ( Vietnamese sausage). My bowl did have quite a bit of just fatty pieces instead of meat, but overall no complaints as everything else was up to par. Service was quick and it's a nice cozy little restaurant. Will definitely be back when I'm in Philly again read more

This place is amazing. While it is a very small space, you realize quickly how great this small restaurant is. There was a line out the door to get a seat. The owner was present and did a good job making sure everything ran smoothly. I had the Ca Ri Ga which was very tasty. I liked the use of coconut milk and chicken pieces that were attached at the bone. The chili oil was amazing. It was house made and didn't taste like the normal chili oil at restaurants. The use of chili oil made the dish the perfect amount of spice (head spice without a crazy amount of hot). The bread option is cheaper than the options with rice/noodles but the rice/noodle dish was bigger. read more
Tiny little pho shop with great food. It was a cold winter day and the BBH absolutely hit the spot. Although small, all the waitstaff were so nice and attentive. Someone came in to pick up an order and I watched them absolutely melt over her black lab and it was the cutest thing. The flavors are legit and if I lived closer I would be back! read more

Cafe Nhan is easily one of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Philly and well, it's my personal favorite. I've been a regular here since the hole in the wall days when they were in an even smaller space a couple doors down with only 2-3 tables. Cafe Nhan is one of those restaurants where you feel like you're getting a home cooked meal made with love and it just hits the spot EVERY time. And that's one of the main reasons I keep coming back. Cafe Nhan is known for their Bun Bo Hue; spicy lemongrass noodle soup w/marinated beef brisket, pig feet, and steamed pork roll. but, if you can't handle spicy, then you can't go wrong with the pho here either ... it's my favorite in Philly. More details on the pho down below Here are my favorites ... 1) fried chicken wings; so simple and juicy. great appetizer to share with the table. 2) banh mi bo kho; beef stew served w/a side roll ... some of the best beef stew i've ever had. the side roll absorbs the broth well 3) pho dac biet; the pho broth is cleaner than most, but at the same time, it's sweeter than most as well. and I think for that reason, some people don't love the broth. if you're used to a dirtier, darker pho broth and/or broth that's on the saltier side ... then Cafe Nhan's pho might not be for you. However, do not equate clean broth to lack of flavor. this pho broth is packed with flavor. 4) bun bo hue; probs what I order 70% of the time. it's just so good no matter the season. i have no found a place in the states that does it better. Accepts cash and credit card. There is free parking in the front. However, there are metered parking spaces nearby. We came here one weekend to get out the local eateries. We ordered the beef noodle soup, crispy shrimp rolls and their deep fried chicken wings. The quantity of food was decent. However, one common theme that we noticed was the food being bland. Not sure if it's typically how their food is prepared, but that's what we noticed and each of my party mentioned that. However, if you are in the area for some decent food, this spot is worth giving a shot. You can choose either to dine in or take out. read more

Bun Bo Hue was perfect! Bun Rieu was OK! Egg rolls were flavorful & crunchy but small. Pork & shrimp summer rolls would've been better with less noodles, more herbs, and for the shrimp to be cooked a little more. The reason why I'm giving it 4 stars is because the vibe was friendly, positive, and home like. read more

Been meaning to check out Café Nhan for the longest time, but they're always closed by 7:30pm, which is before the time we normally order dinner. This Saturday morning, I was craving Bun Bo Hue badly, but I'm sick of Pho Ha shortchanging me on my fishcake and giving us leftovers. I scanned Café Nhan's menu, and I wanted one of everything. Finally, I decided to go with the Bun Bo Hue, since that is their specialty. I will have to try their other offerings next time. It took longer than usual to pick up food, but it was worth it. Inside Café Nhan, it was packed with people, and it wasn't even 12pm yet. We picked up our Bun Bo Hues and drove back home to eat. The portions were the largest I've seen. The broth was spicy and flavorful, just the way it should be. My husband and I were stuffed. Café Nhan was the perfect hangover cure we both needed. read more

More of a 4.5 star review. Decided to go to Philly with the wife for the weekend. I was craving some Bun Bo Hue and decided to go here after reading the reviews. Got there a little after opening on a Saturday morning and there was a good number of patrons. The restaurant is on the small side. We were able to seated right away. We got a couple of items: cafe sua da, bun Bo hue dac biet, Ca Kho to, and the Nhan's wings. The bun Bo hue was pretty good and had a good kick. The meat was pretty fresh. The braised catfish was good but the portion size is on the small side, like a couple of pieces. The wings were okay, not sure when I read the reviews said they were the best wings. I felt like it needed a sauce or something since it was pretty salty. The service was super friendly. They do accept credit cards, but they charge 4% which seems pretty high. Overall I'm glad I got to try this place. I would definitely suggest checking it out, hopefully I get to come back and try the other menu items. read more
Definitely make a stop here if you're craving pho and more specifically - short rib pho! Remember to bring cash though since they have a 3-4% charge for credit cards. Atmosphere: it's more of a casual restaurant and has seating probably for 20 people. We came in with a group of 4 around 5:30 on a Sunday and didn't have any wait. The food all comes out quickly! Food: First, ask for their specials! My husband tried their shrimp sandwich and really liked it / said it tasted like a great shrimp po'boy. I also recommend trying the short rib pho! My friend said that this was previously listed as a special but then was moved to the main menu because of its popularity. It comes with a lot of short rib, and the broth is well done! Their Thai tea and limeade were well prepared too! Overall: 5/5 - will definitely come back when wanting short rib pho, which I haven't seen as much at other pho places I've been to. read more

Hands down the BEST bun bo hue in Philly, with rich flavorful broth, generous servings of meat, perfectly tender noodles, and fantastic service! I've revisited this place twice and loved it each time. Only here do I not add any sauces--that's how amazing their bun bo hue is on its own. Bun bo hue is traditionally very spicy, but the friends I came with, both being Philly natives and knowing my spice tolerance, asked for them to tone it down for me. Servers were always super nice and friendly, and the spice level was on point in that it was just a tinge of heat, but not enough to cause discomfort or overshadow the other flavors. The soup was SO rich and comforting, and the flavor of the lemongrass and meat really shone through, which shows that they took their time to simmer the broth. Despite them having hoisin, sriracha, chili sauce, and fish sauce, I didn't want to add any because the dish was already just that good. I tried a bit of my friend's Banh Canh and was also pleasantly surprised! The noodles had a fun chewy texture, and the dish was very seafood-y if you're into that. The broth was light and refreshing, but too bland, so my Viet friend added in his own sauce mix of lime, fish sauce, and chili. Though the banh canh is not as intrinsically flavorful as the bun bo hue, with sauces, I'd like to try the whole thing next time for the little noodles. Cafe sua da (Vietnamese iced coffee), like other reviews said, is mid because it's not that strong and rather milky. Instead of freshly brewing it, they have pre-brewed coffee sitting in plastic cups in the refrigerator, and then just add milk and ice after you order. Go to Pho 75 for the best Vietnamese iced coffee in Philly. Service is friendly, and as my Philly native friend said, treats you warmly like family. The ambiance is nice and clean, and I like that they have these cool big open windows, but because Philly is Philly, sometimes you get random construction noises coming through. Still, I don't care because Cafe Nhan's bun bo hue is unbeatable, and look forward to my next visits to come! read more
One of my go to Vietnamese restaurants in the city. I usually get Bun rieu when I go but they're most known for the bun bo hue. Broth is so flavorful and always hits the spot. I don't really recommend the chicken or pork rice dish as the portions seem a bit small. They also chop up the meat into bite size pieces which is different than other Vietnamese restaurants. Gone here a few times and before it was great service and staff. However recently... the new server was a bit mean and not understanding. Due to religious reasons I was not able to eat blood cubes (in the noodles soup) usually the server would take it out. This time around it was in there 3 times!! We asked and it seemed like they were just picking it out from the same bowl. Not accommodating toward special requests. read more
Must try their "Bun Bo Hue" the spicy version of Pho with pig blood cubes!! Their Banh Mi and spring rolls were okay, not too outstanding. I have a better place and could find better ones for Banh Mi. However, they have the best Bun Bo Hue you can get in Philly so far! Because the soup was really spicy and really satisfied my craving for really spicy Bun Bo Hue! I have already tried their Bun Bo Hue several times and would definitely coming back million times just for their Bun Bo Hue every time I'm craving for it! read more
This is a family owned restaurant with the BEST viet food. Famous for their bun bo hue. I've come here so often. The price for the quality is unbeatable. It's my go-to spot for when I feel under the weather, having a cold, or even a bad hangover. We ordered cha gio and cafe sua. I didn't think the cha gio was anything special and the coffee was good. I always love coming back to Cafe Nhan! The staff are always super kind and friendly, and the food is amazing :). My favorites to get are the Pho Dac Biet and the Bun Bo Hue. The broth for the Pho is always clean and refreshing, and I love how fresh all the ingredients are. The same can be said for the Bun Bo Hue! I love how flavorful the broth is and how the noodles have such a nice chew. read more
2 star off due to Staff attitude. She gave us a table 2 steps away from the restroom (mind you the space is very tight cozy here) , when asked to be moved, she obviously showed us attitude. The food is beautiful, rumor had it, this place had the best Bun Bo in town, and i totally agree with it. Rich thick broth, smooth blood cake, nice cut of meat. Love love love. If you want some of the best pho in Philly, this is the spot. I usually get the Pho Tai. The broth is very refreshing and savory--I'd say it's also a little on the sweeter side compared to other pho places which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The meat, onions, and garnishes are all fresh. Cafe Nhan is also known for their Bun Bo Hue which is perfect on a colder day or if you are in the mood for a spicy broth. I personally don't like the pig feet, but it is easy enough to take out. The workers are friendly and service is great. Parking can be a pain because you have to reverse park on Passyunk which can get busy, but the hassle is worth it to eat here. read more
I wish they have banh cuon here! So far, only had their bun bu hue & we've never been disappointed. It's dank. Lol. Soo flavorful. Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk is good too. Extremely limited menu, which would be fine if the menu items were excellent. Still in search of a pho in Philadelphia that isn't simply rice noodles, a few sprigs of herbs and bean sprouts drowning in a mediocre beef broth exuding none of the standard pho spices. Not even a hint of star anise, cinnamon, coriander, fennel seed, cloves or cardamom. Perfectly crispy and juicy chicken wings but shockingly bland. Entirely average pork chop and fried egg over broken rice. To add insult to injury, an expected 4% fee for paying with credit card with the only notice printed in tiny text on a single sign at the cash register. read more
Want some clean and GOOD pho? This is the place to go! I've gotten the pho here and the broth was so clean. Not only was the broth was clean but the overall taste of this pho was worth it. This is one of the best pho places I've been too. The atmosphere in the restaurant isn't too big and good to bring families and friends. There is parking on the streets in the neighborhood which is always a plus not to pay for parking. A place that is recommend if your are looking to try viet food! read more
First and foremost, I've been coming to cafe nhan before it even existed in the location it is in now. It was located a few doors down and was even smaller! I am a huge fan of bun bo hue and this is the place to get it. Everything they serve here is delicious but I always get BBH. If you've been wanting to try BBH, I highly recommend coming here. It is definitely spicy, so be warned. I do not get the pig feet or blood cubes, just regular and I will eat the entire bowl. It's that good. Their pho is also good although I usually don't eat pho at restaurants. (I'm really picky with my pho) Another dish I really enjoy is their chicken curry! it comes with noodles and it's bomb. they also have specials that aren't on the menu. Parking here can be kind of annoying since it's right on passyunk but I always find a spot somewhere. The employees here are so nice as well as the owner. definitely give this place a try! read more
Amazing! I've never had Viet food like this before, so it was a real treat. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and the place was pretty packed with lunch goers. Put out names down and waited about half an hour and before getting seated. I got the Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet, which was incredible! The spicy lemongrass soup was delicious and the medley of meats were all so good. Will definitely be back the next time I'm in Philly! read more

The Bun Bo Hue Dac Biet had a nice kick and cleared all my sinuses. The soup was rich and flavorful. I really like the pig pork blood cubes and cha(meal slices). Definitely one of my to-go-to spots for Bun Bo Hue. read more
I had a very pleasant experience here. The food and service were great! Despite all my food adventures in over 16 countries, I somehow managed to never have tried Bun Bo Hue. However, given all the great reviews for Cafe Nhan, I knew this would be the perfect place to do it! Even though I ordered the smaller sized bowl, the portion was HUGE. There were generous amounts of broth, noodles, and toppings, including garnishes such as bean sprouts, Thai basil, and lime (similar to the ones served with Pho). Everything tasted great - the broth was piping hot and had a nice kick to it. The beef was good - the slices were nice and soft. In general, I am not a fan of very thick noodles, which is what they used, so I wasn't in love with the dish (the thicker noodles slipped around easily, making it harder to chew them)... however, they were well made and this is definitely a matter of personal preference. This had been on my to-try list for a long time, so I am glad it finally happened! It's a bit out of the way if you don't usually hang out in South Philly, but I think it is worth the trek! read more
I so had high hopes, I wanted to believe that I found a Pho restaurant to replace the restaurant that closed in Collingdale last year. But it's simply not to be! Let's start with the Soup is fair to good just not great. Bun Bo hue Dac Biet it was not nearly as spicy as I would like but no problem nothing a little sriracha can't fix. NOPE I was wrong the broth had a undesired sweet taste in the backwash. However the ingredients were perfect all of the butchers scraps including pigs feet which were tender. I loved that part! My hot tea was served lukewarm on a very cold night. So disappointed. The restaurant is small but can accommodate quite a few people. Best of all the chef/mom/server/manager was awesome she really wants her customers to be happy. She checked on me often and was very pleasant as well as the rest of the staff. It's a very neat and organized space. Although the tea was not hot and the soup not great, the yogurt was ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS enough to make me give Cafe Nhan another try. An absolute gem if you're craving BBH in Philly. Came on a Sunday afternoon and it was buzzing! It's a small space but the servers here do a good job of estimating when you'll be seated and quickly turning tables over. We got the Bun Bo Hue, Banh Canh and the Nhan wings. Wings were salt and pepper style which I loved. Crispy/crunchy and well seasoned; they're a little on the smaller side but the texture and taste are killer. Could definitely see myself just coming here for wings... but the noodles are the stars of the show. The BBH is rich and has substantial spice without being overpowering. It also comes with a ton of meat. The pig trotter is so tender and falls off the bone. If you're looking for a nice clear broth option, get the banh canh. Super clean and porky broth, still comes with pig feet but also ham and shrimp. The pin noodles were an interesting touch in terms of texture. I prefer the regular long noodles but nice to try something new! Either of these bowls of noodles would absolutely warm your soul if you're coming in from a cold winter's day. I can see why this place is spoken so highly of and will definitely be returning to try more of the menu! read more

This was some of the best Pho I've had in awhile. Such an authentic, homemade feel with delicious flavors. Accommodated whatever sides, sauces etc. I requested. Although the cafe is smaller, the great service and delicious pho makes up for that! 10/10 would recommend, can't wait to return! read more
On a rainy day I was craving some pho and was in the city! I found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. Waitress was very nice and sat me down at a table. I love how you get a whole pitcher of water so you don't have to wait for someone to refill your water. I got the fried spring rolls and the round eye steak pho. The pho came out first and the broth was super flavorful. There was a lot of noodles and not a lot of meat. It was a huge bowl of pho and I ended up taking the other half home for dinner (which I never do). Spring rolls were fried and tasted great with the dipping sauce. The rolls were filled with shrimp, meat and veggies. So delicious! I would def. Come back here again when I have a craving for pho. read more

Visited for a late lunch on the weekend. Highly recommend going earlier than later as some of the other dishes I wanted to try were sold out. The service was lovely, friendly, and helpful. The pho was fantastic the broth was very flavorful (hardly needed Sriracha and hoisin sauce) and the cuts of meat were great quality. Would definitely return for this alone.The fried wonton was as expected fried delicious goodness the sauce went really well with it. I got a Thai tea as well, it was solid not watered down (which is sometimes an issue at other spots) read more
