I frequented Cafe St Ex before the pandemic and during when they had the carry out pouches. I returned for brunch and the curried chicken. Yes a friend and i visited, I wanted a draft but they were out, so I ordered a Jameson shot and a Anxo cider (can). Me and my friend went outside to wait for her food and I began drinking the cider. As I was drinking it I noticed it tasted really bitter, like an off bitter, so I opened my camera light and OMG yall, it was rusted and molded! I went to the bar where the bartender showed I guess the barback and he removed three more cans like that. (I wish I took a picture but I had witnesses). So it gets worse. The Anxo can is about $8, I asked her to switch it out for a frozen drink. So we continue to eat our food and socialize with our friends. When we asked for the bill, I noticed she took the Anxo off and added the $14 frozen drink. Now as a 13 year veteran bartender, I should've been comped for the drink in all. That was a health hazard and a really bad look for the establishment. So I kindly wrote a note which I will attach, saying I will not pay for the frozen drink, as it was switched out for a health hazard caused on your end. I paid the difference. The rude ass manager comes over and the 1st thing he says is "who wrote this?".... so basically he was like it was my responsibility to come to him and my response was wrong, got really nasty with my friend and I when we said we work in this industry and it was your bartender responsibility to get her manager for her error. He was very rude and nasty to us making all kinds of hand gestures and telling us how wrong we were for his cans being nasty. The icing on the cake was him telling us how normal it is for cans to be rusty and molded. Like I said 13 years in this industry and never have I experienced a reaction so trifling. Now suppose I got sick this morning from ingestion the mold? Bartenders and servers make errors no doubt but to upcharge me for a nasty ass can then be mad that I was not willing to pay is crazy. I really wanted to like this place, but it was hard. The service was slow; it took 10-min after being seated to get someone to take our orders. Since we had so much time to sit and observed, we noticed the people next to us, who sat down later than we did, got their orders taken before us. I ended up getting the French toast. Unfortunately, they got order wrong. With the French toast plate, you get the option of bacon or sausage. I ordered the sausage, but got bacon instead. The French toast was cut up in triangles, and if you put them together, it really equated to one slice of bread. Overall, the French toast was "meh". BATHROOM REVIEW: Located down a narrow corridor near the kitchen where kitchen door swings open (be careful!), the bathrooms here are called "water closets". Single person WCs. Two of em. Cafe Saint-Ex will always be an old stand by in my heart. When I was in college, it was known as a spot where you could play DJ for the night by hooking up your iPod to the sound system. Back then, that was groundbreaking stuff. Now that I'm older and more of a daytime daisy than night owl, I love Cafe Saint-Ex simply for the fact that it is one of the few independently owned restaurants that is open for lunch on 14th Street on weekdays. Their menu is pretty standard French bistro fare but they execute well and they even offer sweet potato fries as an alternative to regular french fries. A recent visit had me eyeing their crab cakes and I did not leave disappointed. This is the type of spot you go to for friendly service, reliable crowd pleasing food in the neighborhood. My friend and I had the best time here for happy hour. We weren't expecting a lot but it ended up being unique, tasty, and a pretty good deal. The ambiance is nothing special here, it's pretty dark inside but it's clean and classy. Reminded me of a bar in Europe. The waiter wasn't the most attentive but the food came out fast once we had ordered. We shared the fried chickpeas on top of pita with hummus, which was delicious. We also shared the Nori fries and they were really yummy! I was skeptical but ended up liking them a lot. Then we each had a bao and liked those as well. I got the Moscow mule which was good but very citrus-y, so not the best I've ever had. My friend got a glass of red wine. We ordered entirely off the happy hour menu and it was very reasonable! Great service. Okay food. Met a friend for lunch on Veterans Day around 1:00pm. There were not that many people here midday on a holiday so we were sat immediately and given attentive service. I ordered a burger, no bun. For $18, I thought it should've come with a side but that cost extra. The burger was just okay. My friend ordered shrimp and grits which she said were good enough. Came for brunch with some friends and overall had a good experience. We had an extra person we needed to add to the reservation and they were able to accommodate us no problem which we appreciated. For brunch I ordered eggs benedict which you can do with ham or crab cakes. I ordered the benedict with ham but was brought the crab cake benedict. Thankfully our waitress was good about replacing my meal for the right one I had ordered. I also had hashbrowns with the benedict which was just okay. The coffee was pretty good and for the bottomless mimosas you get a choice of orange or grapefruit juice. The grapefruit juice mimosa was super tasty and our waitress was really good about refilling the drinks. Their bottomless deal is a bit strange, its $10 for the first glass and $1 for each refill that but they dont always wait til your glass is empty before refilling you so you might end up paying more than what you actually drank but since it's the matter of a dollar it's not a huge deal. The waitstaff here is really friendly and service is good overall. They did ask our table to leave after barely two hours because it's a small place and they had another reservation coming which I thought was a little rude. I can understand being asked to leave having overstayed our welcome but we had only been there an hour and 45 minutes and were still enjoying drinks. I would consider coming back in the summer when the patio is open but there wasn't anything impressive enough that makes me want to come back. read more

This review is for the dining experience only. Our waitress was friendly and came by a few times to check in so that part earned a few stars (despite the other reviews here on their slow service). The pimento cheese dip was a winner! Tasty and came with warm toast. The cheese was shredded into little pieces and was served a little chilled. Our entrees on the other hand, were not as appetizing. The meat in the barbecue brisket grilled cheese was dry and tough to swallow. The chefs burger was good but also nothing to come back for - Duke's Grocery has raised the bar too high for other DC restaurants! Everything I said below was true, however I recently went there for a friends going away party and had a horrible experience, so I feel the need to update my review from a 4 star to a 1 star. Not only was the one drink I had, HORRIBLE, I was charged on my card more than what I signed for. I'm always really good at keeping track of my receipts so I guess I'll deal with them (and easily prove the lie)... Regardless, last I checked, that's illegal. Ultimately, I really shouldn't have even given this place 4 stars in the first place, but I was giving it the benefit of the doubt. ULTIMATELY, just don't trust this place. They rip you off. ___ Here was my original post when I initially tried to appreciate it... So I went there for brunch and greatly enjoyed the food. The restaurant was not overly crowded like some of the restaurants in DC. The food was great and really inexpensive for the quality and amount. And the wait staff was really nice, patient and helpful--that says a lot because I'm the queen of being indecisive. Unfortunately the main reason I'm not giving this place a 5 star review is due to the cramped space. We went on a day that was so hot we definitely wanted air conditioning, but the space inside just felt too close. At least half of the seating is the tall tables (that are essentially like sitting at a bar) and then even the shorter tables are a little too close together. If nothing else, I wish they had a bit more sound absorption because the close quarters made for a loud space. read more

There were a few things about Saint Ex that were hit and miss. The restaurant is in a great location, right in the middle of both U St and 14th St, perfect if you're trying to make a day/night out of the visit. They have a somewhat tavern feel with sturdy wooden tables and a nice bar. Its fairly lively place on a Saturday, which makes for a good vibe. A few of us came for brunch at 1130am on a Saturday, which is a pretty early brunch by my standards, and they were already sold out of the Chai Oatmeal. On top of that, the menu they provide in the restaurant is not the same menu as they have posted online on their website. This may not seem like a big deal but we were deciding between a couple different places and were ultimately drawn in by the delicious-sounding French Toast Bread Pudding, which we were disappointed to not see on the menu! Anyways, I settled with the Shrimp and Grits which was still good. There were a generous amount of shrimp, nice texture to the grits and good cajun flavor. The poached egg on top was undercooked, with loose egg whites. The biscuits and jam are delicious. They're not your typical southern big, flakey biscuits but they are crunchy and buttery on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. The deviled eggs we started with were good as well, they had a nice smooth egg filling mixture, they probably could have used a bit more acid but they were definitely good. To drink we got a couple moscow mules, which didn't really taste like ginger beer, but more like watered-down lime. The last thing that rubbed me the wrong way is that we were asked to leave our table a little before 130. I understand they have another reservation but we had literally just debated (in front of the waitress) on whether we should buy another round of drinks here and decided to go for it. Probably 5 minutes after getting our drinks she came and told us they need the table for another reservation so it felt a little rushed. All in all, everything was okay. Our waitress had a cool personality as she was like a jack of all trades: she was our server, bartender and hostess and she offered great conversation (we both love the theater). The food was good and seems popular since most of the sides were sold out from the brunch earlier that day. Based on our server's recommendation we each got different plates and shared. The wings were great. They were bigger than expected but had a good sauce and flavor. The fries were good as well and both left me full. They offer speciality cocktails but they also have a full bar. We visited Saint-Ex a couple weeks back while in town visiting friends. One of our friends had been there before and was familiar with their basement, where she remembered having had a good experience. The night we went the upstairs part that faces the street was busy but not packed, and we opted for a high-top table near the bar. Our server was there immediately with menus and a great attitude. Friendly, a little funny, confident. We wanted a snack and some drinks. She came back after leaving us with an appropriate amount of time to review the menu, took our drink order and went away. A few minutes later, and a surprising short few minutes considering they were busy, we got 2 of the 3 drinks (glasses of wine). My husband, anxious to eat a snack, started asking more questions about the menu, and she very politely asked if she could finish serving the remaining drink (which was for me, though she didn't know I was his wife), and then answer his questions. I was impressed by this focus to get all the customers set before moving on to something new. She promptly brought the final drink (mine, which was a cocktail), and then had an informative conversation about various menu items that satisfied my hubby. He ordered wings, and she went away and left us to our conversation. We liked the atmosphere, thought the wine pours were generous and my cocktail (don't remember the name) was delicious; and the service was great. This is a review for the bar area and drinks. We had a great time here after dinner on a Thursday night. Abraham was a super friendly, hospitable, and attentive bartender to my friend and I. For cocktails, I recommend the corpse reviver #2, as it was pretty easy to drink and refreshing. My friend had returned from his deployment overseas and wanted to check this bar out specifically for the "flight" and "pilot" theme and he was really happy. The decoration is really cute although that's probably the wrong word to describe it. I truly love this place: it's my go to bar in the neighborhood, but only on weeknights. I've closed the bar on many a Tuesday night, and it's always laid back and fun. If you can get there before 10, you can catch the kitchen (highly recommend the truffle fries) and sit outside. There is fantastic people watching on 14th Street, particularly here so close to U. The bartenders are all great and will get to know you and your order (shout out to Hillary)! I only gave this beloved bar four stars because it's a totally different place on the weekends: it's always full of bros and it loses all chill and charm. Everyone is crammed in, and it gets loud. At first we were skeptical and almost walked away because their was no outside seating; however, we opt for the inside seating. Cafe Saint-Ex was serving up brunch on MLK and I knew I needed to finally make my way through those doors. We made a reservation and we were ready to eat! Beverages: Bottomless deal runs for 2-Hours. You pay $10 for the first mimosa and can choose between orange and grapefruit juice. Each refill is $1. It's not the best mimosa deal in the city, but it's pretty solid. Bloodys: Bloodys come in glasses or pitches. Pitchers= $20. Food: The menu is broken down by lite fare, hungry and hungover. This is basically a warning, hey, you don't order from the hungover menu unless you are FAMISHED because you will not finish your plate and you will be conquered. Fried Green Tomato Benny- a friend ordered this and it looked amazing. Breakfast sammy- HOLY COW. This was a ton of food. You get your option between regular, garlic or sweet potato fries and a dipping sauce. I went garlic for both. Woah baby. Loads of garlic, but seasoned to perfection! This breakfast sammy was served on their homemade (and "famous") biscuit. Awesome brunch. Billy was an amazing waiter. I will be back here to check out the patio next time I come here! read more

I've been here twice. Both on weekend nights. Both around 2200-2300. And both times I've stuck around for all of ten minutes, tops. The basement level reminds me a little bit of the upstairs of Town. Except that instead of crazy spinning lighting at Town, St. Ex is nearly lightless. Instead of tall, ripped, shirtless, sweaty dancing boys... St. Ex is filled with short, clothed, awkward breeders. I guess the music might have been somewhat similar - some virtually tuneless dance track with heavy bass. My friend Genger is a genius. I mean, she's always been a bright one but when she proposed that a burger be slid into her Fried Green Tomato BLT as a birthday wish, she blew our minds. And she blew the waitress' mind as well. Not only was the waitress amused by this request, she was impressed. After sliding off to the kitchen for a bit, she came back to confirm that they could make it happen. Yes, I'm well aware that a bacon cheeseburger with goat cheese and a fried green tomato may not quite be a game changer. However, in that moment the wonder that was before us was monumental. I wasn't very hungry, but I had to take a bite and I must admit, it was one of the better bites of burger I have taken in recent history. The sweet potato fries were also very tasty - long, crisp and sweet albeit a bit salty. Our waitress was awesome. Not only was she on top of her game, she was warm, engaging, helpful and accommodating. Prior to this most recent visit, I had only grabbed drinks at Saint-Ex, but after this experience I will definitely return to dine. Between our too timid and unfocused waitress and the nearly unbearable wait for food (two hours for a fried green tomato BLT?) my recent experience at Cafe Saint-Ex was rather disappointing. Thankfully my favorite Washingtonian and the Wittekerke rose Belgian beer took a bit of the edge off. Upstairs bar was akin to a Marina hang out, little warm though, well attended, decent service. Downstairs had a basement club east coast feel, very smokey, great bartenders, better music but the people were a little disappointed. No one could dance, despite the DJ's best efforts, and most of the people just sort of milled around toward the end of the night. Sudden revival around 1:30 though, the mood picked up, as did the drunken debauchery, and the beer flowed like, well...beer. read more

My last visit here, on Sunday, May 5th, was terrible. I had been to this place before and thought it was decent. But the food today was horrible. I ordered the huevos rancheros with pork belly. The rice and beans, as you can see in the attached picture was extremely mushy and felt more like porridge. It was hidden under the eggs, and I really think they knew exactly what they were doing with that plating. I asked the waitress if the chef intended to cook the rice like this, and she told me they had made it in a batch in the morning and it had turned out like that. Why the hell would you serve this? Do you really think all your patrons are that unrefined? The pork belly was also horrible. It was extremely salty and not crispy and it didn't feel dress at all. Overall, the quality of the ingredients was really bad. Yes, I did eat all the pork belly because I was really hungry, but this is like sexual harassment at work. Just because you smile at the creepy jokes of your boss, it doesn't mean that you wanted it or that you don't get to complain later. read more

This place is a little strange, mainly because the upstairs and downstairs are like two totally different bars. Upstairs has a quaint, definitely French, saloony vibe to it, all classy like, and then down stairs would be the perfect venue for a bunch of Satanic hipsters in snoods to perform animal sacrifices to Arcade Fire or something. Dark and oddly blue and divey and...frat house basementy but with dudes that had shaved heads and long beards. Anyway, I moved our party upstairs. It's a small joint and we were a large group so we crammed into the largest upstairs booth they had and made the best of it. The service was pretty good and they handled the situation well. Drinks were phenomenal. I mean phenomenal. Dangerously so, because you don't realize how much alcohol you're imbibing. I started with a bourbon drink the waitress recommended that had lemon in it and a red wine float. Solid. But then I moved on to an "Up and Away" which is gin with rosemary and current and holy Jesus. I don't even believe in Jesus. But holy Jesus. it helps that I particularly adore currant but everyone who tried this drink dropped their jaws and soon we were ordering them in droves. Like I said. Dangerous. Food was good, too. It's that kind of nouveau stuff that would be innovative if every other semi-posh endroit in all of Washington weren't doing the same exact thing. But they did it *well.* I ordered the house made burrata and the parsnip gnocchi. I love burrata. I go out of my way burrata. For house made it wasn't as impressive as I expected, a little too firm for me, and they served it with a sunny side up egg and a fluffy biscuit thing. I'd prefer just baguette or toast. And my pet peeve is sunny side eggs that clearly haven't been flipped, so that the whites around the yoke are still runny and transparent. The egg and biscuit basically had nothing to do with the burrata, especially with its drizzle of balsamic vinegar. I ate them separately, since the burrata was so firm anyway. My parsnip gnocchi was lovely. Maybe a touch too salty, but the texture of the gnocchi was great, and who knew that parsnips could be such a delight. My friend got a parsnip dip that had a touch of sweetness to it and was served with a buttered toasty bread toast ... thing. I would go back and get that. Everyone else seemed happy with their food choices. And a friend and I split the tres leches cake. Great flavor, a little heavy, big portion, very rich. Friend and I couldn't even finish half. All in all a nice gastronomic experience. I'd go back. Especially for that currant drink. But for burrata I'll stick with Maple. read more

One of the best happy hours I've been to - both in terms of deals and experience! I loved the house red (a cab) - it was smooth and delicious. & only $5! My friend also liked her Moscow mule (although it was a little limey). We really enjoyed the hummus flatbread. I LOVED the fried chickpeas on top as the element of crunch really brought the dish to a whole new level. We also loved the Nori fries. The seasoning was so unique and addicting! We weren't big fans of the ranch, but the fries were great without it. Finally, the tofu bao was incredible. The bao was perfectly soft and the tofu was a perfect combination of spice and teriyaki flavor. The service was fast and friendly, and the atmosphere was great. Terrible table service, good food, high prices. --- Tried once again with Saint-Ex, after not being here for about a year. Sunday night, place is dead (4 of the tables in the main room were empty). No hostess in sight. After a couple minutes of me and my friend waiting at the hostess stand, another employee -- who had been sitting and watching us the whole time without saying anything -- says "I'm not the hostess but I can seat you". So we sit down and get water almost immediately, and menus. But no waitress. We see the waitress leaning against the wall at another table, chatting with other diners. No rush. After five minutes, she's still chatting and we're still waiting. We haven't even been able to put in a *drink* order. A minute or two later the busgirl comes by and I ask "is that the only waitress?" and she tells me she'll get someone. Finally (after about 7-10 minutes of waiting, in a near-empty restaurant) waitress shows up with "hey". No "sorry about the wait". Nope. The other downside to this place besides the terrible table service is the price: $20+ per entry of "pretty good" food. So my brother and I stumbled upon this place fir brunch because it was one of the few that actually lasts past 3pm. It's very cozy and the food is AMAZING! I had the brisket and eggs similar to steak and eggs but not quite. It was so delicious I almost licked the sauce off the bowl but too many people were watching. And me being the french fry/potato connoisseur that I am their hash browns were seasoned to perfection! Their mimosas (bottomless option available) were strong but very good! All in all I would give this place a 5 star but when we walked in it smelled like feet not gonna lie, but clearly that didn't deter us from enjoying a delicious Sunday brunch. read more
