Had dinner last night for the first time at the Sylvia Beach Hotel. We met four others and shared the table with another group of four. None of us were staying at the hotel! The restaurant has one dinner seating at 7pm. We had a reservation but only half the dining room was full on a rainy night in December. I knew we had ordered our entree in advance and figured out that other than drinks, there were no menus. It was really nice, actually, to not spend the first 10 minutes with heads in menus trying to decide what to order. We could just focus on visiting with our friends from out of town! We ordered wine and there was only one gal working the dining room so it took a while to get going. It was quite a long time before we got drinks. Once that was out of the way, however, the rest of the night was perfectly paced. They set a formal table and every piece of silverware got used! We started out with a sourdough bread and butter. Then an every so light and fluffy shrimp bisque that was creamy and delicious. Everything is served family-style so you pass bowls around but they usually brought two so you only had a wait a moment for the bowl to reach you. The dishes are nice too, china and crystal, it's very elegant. Next was a Greek salad with lots of Kalamata olives and feta cheese and slightly sweet dressing that was really good. The romaine lettuce was fresh and crisp. After salad, we were served the main course. Half of the table had ordered steaks, the other half the salmon cakes, and one got a vegetarian entree which was a mushroom souffle. The salmon cakes were pretty amazing. A light breading and flavorful fish with a strong garlic and dill cream. With the entree, there were steamed vegetables and really yummy scalloped potatoes. I like the family style because you can try many things without eating too much but if you have a big appetite, there's always more. Every dish was always cleared before the new round came out and it was very nicely paced. Our gal kept the water poured and made sure we had everything we needed. For dessert, she brought out regular coffee, decaf and hot tea. We had an incredible almond cake with a dollop of pink whipped cream on the side. It was so good! I thought I was too full for dessert but ate every bite. So did everyone else. Overall, a very lovely evening with great food. The dining room as much quieter than many restaurants, too, so we were able to talk to everyone at the table.

Pros: We had a nice spacious 3rd floor room with a great view of the beach. The hotel has nice amenities like great toiletries that smell lovely, nice robe and a balcony plus a fireplace. Shower had 3 separate water nozzles which was fun! (Although took a minute to figure out how to use) Heated infinity Jacuzzi pool was wonderful! Fire pits near the pool also great! The front desk people were all very nice. The place was clean and they had cookies in the lobby that we tried one day (yum!) Cons: I was disappointed that they apparently did away with the made to order breakfast that they have pictured in their website. Instead of the items pictured was a Continental breakfast delivered in little plastic containers in a box. It was not bad taste wise, and I definitely appreciated the hard boiled egg as a bit of protein along with all the carbs. But it would have been nice to know of this change before booking. Price is fairly high for the cold month of March. We asked about the sofa bed getting set up for our 3rd person in the room and were told we needed to make it ourselves. For the price we paid it would have been nice that they could have sent someone to set up the sofabed, that was weird, and unexpected. Kind of felt like something a much lower end hotel would ask you to do. I debated between 3 and 4 stars since there were both good and bad points. If there was a 3.5 stars option this is what i'd choose honestly. I'd come back again but only if I got a much better rate.

Even Orlando Disney resorts don't charge that exorbitant VAT/tourist taxes/fees that Newport Oregon does. The clerk that checked me in didn't bother to explain any of the hotel amenities. Had there not been another family checking in at the same time, I wouldn't have known what any of them were. I felt unwelcome. The silverfish in the bathroom is why the cleaning crew gets bad points. The rest of the low ratings are due to the run down condition of the venue, and the $400 5-star price.

There…read morewere seven of us, and we stayed in House 134, the four-bedroom, 1.5-bath rental across the street from the hotel. The biggest positive was the location. The ocean views from the living room and the primary bedroom are absolutely beautiful and were one of the highlights of our stay. There were, however, a few things I wish had been disclosed on the website before booking. First, housekeeping is not provided for the rental homes, regardless of the length of your stay. This also means toiletries are not restocked. By the middle of the week, we ended up purchasing our own supplies. This may be standard for some vacation rentals, but it would have been helpful to know ahead of time since it's different from what many guests expect at a hotel. The biggest issue for our family was the layout of the home. There are three to four steps leading down into the primary bedroom, and there is no handrail. My elderly in-laws stayed in that room and had difficulty navigating the stairs. I think this is important information for anyone with mobility concerns. The primary bedroom also does not have an attached bathroom. The half bath is located off the laundry room near the kitchen, on the opposite side of the house, while the full bathroom is in the hallway. For older guests, a few simple safety features like grab bars and a non-slip surface in the bathroom would make a significant difference. I'm not expecting a fully ADA-compliant rental, but some basic accessibility considerations would go a long way. One thing the photos don't really capture is the scale of the furnishings. The home photographs beautifully, and the décor is very stylish, but it felt more like a staged model home than a place designed for a week-long stay. The living room had a very small, low three-person sofa and decorative accent chairs that looked nice but weren't particularly comfortable for relaxing as a larger family. The three smaller bedrooms would also benefit from having dressers or additional storage for guests staying more than a night or two. The kitchen was clean and attractive, but if you plan on cooking most of your meals--as many families do when renting a home--it could use a better selection of cookware. We found the knives, pots, and pans to be fairly limited for preparing meals. Overall, we enjoyed the beautiful views and convenient location, but I think providing more detailed information about the home's layout, amenities, and accessibility would help future guests decide whether it's the right fit for their needs.

We had originally booked a hillside view room, but the staff surprised us with an upgrade to an oceanfront view, which truly made the stay feel extra special. Waking up to the ocean was such a beautiful experience. The hotel itself has been updated so nicely. The renovations felt like a nice upgrade, and we absolutely loved our room. The pool and hot tub area were also a highlight, clean, relaxing, and a perfect way to unwind. One of our favorite parts was how easy it was to walk down to the beach. The location really doesn't get better than this. The staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and attentive throughout our stay, and room service was quick. This was my second time staying here, and it's officially the only place we want to stay when we come to Newport.
