Amazing food and they cater to any and all food sensitivities. All gluten-free menu and I had a wonderful vegan Shepard's pie. My husband had pork osso bucco. He veganized the Banana Foster for me and it came with coconut ice cream. Highly, highly recommend!!!

What a great restaurant, let alone in Nye Beach (Newport area)! This is fine dining with outstanding food and service but in a relaxed atmosphere. My wife and I celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary here and had just a great time. First of all, let's get the logistics out of the way. Zach is very careful to enforce the health and safety COVID precautions - gloves, masks on both sides, LEGITIMATE table spacing (look, I've been to several restaurants in 2020 that claim to have table spacing and many of them either barely achieve the 6 foot distancing are flat out DON'T even make it six feet), sanitizing between guests. Secondly, the food is just great. You won't find these dishes just anywhere. I had a great elk and bison sausage dish with some kind of root vegetable that resembled broccoli but wasn't (sorry, Zach, I should have remembered!) that was just delicious! My wife had the salmon cake and was equally happy with her entree. The crab (cake) appetizer was absolutely outstanding, too. Not full of bread crumbs. Just delicious local crab, YUM. Also the bread is delicious, with soft warm butter, and gluten-free. In fact, Zach doesn't even make a big deal out of it but everything's gluten-free in the first place, no need to modify any dishes if you're on a gluten-free diet. That is PRETTY RARE! Finished off with a great hazelnut bread pudding with fresh ice cream. Everything is sourced locally, so it supports the community and the supply chain. And the local St. Innocent Pinot Gris was just great and a perfect complement to the food. Given that we were on a road trip and had put our faith in an important wedding anniversary dinner, and didn't know for sure what to expect, we were just WOWED by this place. And Zach's Bistro is not ONLY for special occasion dining, either. While we were celebrating a wedding anniversary, I would feel totally comfortable here dining casually as well. Zach provides outstanding food and incredible service, but not in a stuffy or stodgy way. On top of that, I had no problem with the wine or food prices. We enjoyed a wonderfully paced, delicious meal here. The fact that Zach can easily accommodate dietary restrictions and needs is just another huge bonus. I would even go as far as to say this is destination dining. If you are even reasonably close to Newport, OR, I would make a point of dining here. I'm upset with myself for not having dined here until now, and I assure you we'll be back and will make a POINT to return.

We got the seafood platter as an appetizer and it was so delicious! We got to try a little bit of everything. We were pretty full just off of that but got entrees. The ahi poke in the seafood platter was so good I had to get it as my main. The sauce was so incredible with fresh avocado. I NEED that recipe. I would come back to Newport just for the ahi poke bowl. My fiance got the dungeness crab mac and cheese and it was without a doubt THE BEST mac and cheese we've ever had. We are Mac and cheese connoisseurs so that says a lot. The sauce was so perfect and the crab was very generous. To top it all off I thought the post cards at the end were very sweet. I came to Newport when I was a child (maybe 7 years old) and I had lots of old memories that I relived on my trip. I sent one to my mom. Our waiter was absolutely lovely. We tasted most of their wines (um, free tastings!!), consumed some pints, and bought some bottles. Decided it was a beer day and vowed to buy some wine to take home for later. Simply stated, these guys rock. Have stopped in here a few times after adventures at the Pelican. Very cool, very down to earth. We showed up in our bike clothes( this is one relaxed tasting room) and were welcomed by Shawn, one of the owners. He had some cool music groovin', some old vinyls alongside the bar, and with my Pliny in hand, I wanted to spend the rest of the day here chatting up the locals. If I lived in town, you'd probably find me here more often than the Pelican. You can always find fresh Russian River beers on tap and for sale in bottles here. Ask me how I know? Why don't you ask them? :) The wine is really well priced, lots of Cabs and Syrahs, (try the Reversal Syrah!) and as they said on their menu, good for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday night drinking.... We noticed Chenin, Shawn's wife wasn't around that day and found she was at the PSU Farmer's market where they attend all summer. Shawn also told me you can find them Thursday evenings at another Farmer's market in the Pearl in Portland. Sweet. As much as I love coming to Pacific City, it's also nice to know we can find their wine in Portland in the summertime since they don't sell it retail in stores. An hour later, (maybe two?) we left smiling with two bottles of wine, the Basket Case Syrah and a red table wine in hand, and two empty pint glasses of Pliny on the bar.

Rainy Day, Great Bar Seat, and One Memorable Meal…read more It was a cold, rainy Oregon afternoon when I stumbled into Castor, and I'm glad I did. There happened to be one open seat at the bar, which is my favorite place to dine when traveling. Sitting at the bar lets you talk story with the bartender, learn the menu, and watch the cocktails come together. If you're eating alone, I highly recommend grabbing a seat here. The bartender was friendly, easy to talk with, and clearly knew both the menu and the craft behind the bar. One thing that stood out right away was their use of fresh local ingredients, which really shows up in the flavor of the dishes and drinks. I started with the Golden Manhattan, made with a pecan-infused bourbon that was fantastic. It had a rich, slightly nutty flavor with warm vanilla notes and just the right touch of sweetness. Smooth, balanced, and a great way to kick off the meal. Alongside that I ordered the chorizo clam chowder, which brought a creamy base with just the right amount of spice from the chorizo. Comfort food with a little personality. For dinner I switched gears and ordered the Creole Sour. This one really stood out. Bright citrus up front, a smooth bourbon backbone, and a subtle spice note that tied perfectly into the Creole theme. It had that classic sour balance, tart, slightly sweet, and refreshing without overpowering the drink. Dinner was the gumbo with hot bread and butter, and it delivered. Deep flavor, a nice slow warmth from the spice, and hearty enough to make the rainy Oregon weather feel like part of the experience. To finish things off I kept it simple with a neat pour of Ben Holladay, which made for the perfect nightcap. The staff were welcoming and relaxed, which made the whole experience feel easy and comfortable. This is the kind of place that works whether you're dining solo, meeting friends, out with someone special, or grabbing dinner with a group. The price point landed right where it should be for the quality of food, cocktails, and service. If you're in Corvallis and can grab a seat at the bar at Castor, take it. Order a cocktail, settle in, and enjoy the ride. It turned a rainy afternoon into one heck of a meal.

My partner's chicken was dry and tough, and my Shrimp and Grits was nothing like I know from Texas and Louisiana. The grits were drowned in a clear broth, and the shrimp were totally bland, with nothing of the zesty Cajun spice typical of the dish. I had to ask for salt. Not what I would expect from a restaurant that calls itself "Southern inspired." They need a new chef.
