Everything was fantastic, made with such care and creativity it was like an artistic experience. Zach is really fun and personable and passionate about what he does. He makes each ingredient shine. Everything was so good it's hard to pick a favorite. Stand outs for me were the mussels and the venison. I had no idea venison could be so tender and the mussels were perfect. I'm very lactose intolerant and he had no problem making me delicious food that I could safely eat, including a strawberry crisp with nondairy "icecream". Just wonderful. Once again, we were at the coast and got a reservation for dinner at Zach's on Sunday night. I wrote a glowing review in 2023, and this time we were not disappointed. Wow, this food is spectacular. My husband had the (very good) wine pairings with the 3-course dinner, and I ordered a la carte. It was all so very good that we decided we had to eat here again on Monday night, our last night in Nye Beach. Over the two nights we were never disappointed...some of what we had: fish rillettes, crab cake, geoduck soup, lamb ossobuco, short ribs - and two really interesting and delicious cocktails. This is the only restaurant I go to in the Newport area. Why? Because the food is creatively prepared and very very fresh. It's reasonably priced for the quality. The crab cakes were so fresh. Almost entirely crab with some well paired herbs to bring out the delicate crab flavor and crunchy outer texture to offset the soft delicate interior. Lucky Newport. Few chefs will experiment so wildly and few will satisfy and delight so totally for such a reasonable fee. Zach's bistro shines brightly like the Newport lighthouse ushering in a whole new way of tasting unique food combos. We had asparagus and tallegio stuffed raviolis and rabbit sausages and rock island clam chowder that was in a league of its own. All this before handmade desserts with low sugar addictive ice creams. Zach has the zest and talent for creating a dizzy array of daily offerings that will never be just a dinner out. What a great restaurant, let alone in Nye Beach (Newport area)! This is fine dining with outstanding food and service but in a relaxed atmosphere. My wife and I celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary here and had just a great time. First of all, let's get the logistics out of the way. Zach is very careful to enforce the health and safety COVID precautions - gloves, masks on both sides, LEGITIMATE table spacing (look, I've been to several restaurants in 2020 that claim to have table spacing and many of them either barely achieve the 6 foot distancing are flat out DON'T even make it six feet), sanitizing between guests. Secondly, the food is just great. You won't find these dishes just anywhere. I had a great elk and bison sausage dish with some kind of root vegetable that resembled broccoli but wasn't (sorry, Zach, I should have remembered!) that was just delicious! My wife had the salmon cake and was equally happy with her entree. The crab (cake) appetizer was absolutely outstanding, too. Not full of bread crumbs. Just delicious local crab, YUM. Also the bread is delicious, with soft warm butter, and gluten-free. In fact, Zach doesn't even make a big deal out of it but everything's gluten-free in the first place, no need to modify any dishes if you're on a gluten-free diet. That is PRETTY RARE! Finished off with a great hazelnut bread pudding with fresh ice cream. Everything is sourced locally, so it supports the community and the supply chain. And the local St. Innocent Pinot Gris was just great and a perfect complement to the food. Given that we were on a road trip and had put our faith in an important wedding anniversary dinner, and didn't know for sure what to expect, we were just WOWED by this place. And Zach's Bistro is not ONLY for special occasion dining, either. While we were celebrating a wedding anniversary, I would feel totally comfortable here dining casually as well. Zach provides outstanding food and incredible service, but not in a stuffy or stodgy way. On top of that, I had no problem with the wine or food prices. We enjoyed a wonderfully paced, delicious meal here. The fact that Zach can easily accommodate dietary restrictions and needs is just another huge bonus. I would even go as far as to say this is destination dining. If you are even reasonably close to Newport, OR, I would make a point of dining here. I'm upset with myself for not having dined here until now, and I assure you we'll be back and will make a POINT to return. read more

WHAT A FIND!!! We stopped here on a whim while passing through, and it was amazing! Zach is a true original in every way--a menu like no other with lots of cool policies including no tipping. Three of us had crab cakes and enjoyed them--"almost all crab!" Salad like no other--spinach, apples, and lots of unexpected goodies. Zach hosted our Greek American family dinner last weekend, and it was wonderful. He put together a menu that worked perfectly for our group of 19 adults and 7 children, from appetizer (spinach pie with dumpling) through dessert (Greek honeycake with Oregon strawberries). The lamb stew brought back many memories of the dish our yiayia made back in the day. Our server Jenny was very attentive to each of us ensuring all our needs were met with friendliness and care. He also handles reservations and can accommodate most dietary restrictions with a little advance warning. On a slow day, there is sometimes a "reservations available" sign in the window. Zach's Bistro was a revelation. We were expecting a rather ordinary meal and received the most interesting and well-prepared meal that I have had in years. I say "interesting" in the sense that everything had something unexpected or a twist on the usual that was both wonderful and surprising. Best of all, everything was gluten free and safe for me to eat. The chestnut soup, clam chowder, fried market fish, potatoes, squash, and perfectly cooked broccolini were all terrific. Even the butter tasted more "buttery" than any we've ever had. There seemed to be an excessive use of sprouts as garnish for my taste, but I'm not a fan of sprouts in any form. The food was served at the right temperatures and the main course plates were warmed. (I appreciate that very much.) The decor is unexceptional and the ambience is a bit spare, but the music was delightful and at a nice low volume, unlike too many places. The bill was surprisingly low for the quality of food and service we received. We plan to come down to Newport more often just to enjoy Zach's Bistro. Highly recommended. read more

What a neat, quaint restaurant. I loved everything! I won't lie...when we saw this place, I wasn't sure if I wanted to try it out (not because there was something wrong with it) but my partner said let's check out the menu which was on the window. I was a bit disappointed that brunch was being served & not the yummy offerings I'd read prior to entering but all my fears were laid to rest very quickly. I had the 2 egg breakfast with farm fresh bacon (I could taste the difference) & lyonnaise which were these super decadent pan fried buttery potatoes. The meal also included a very thick cut of some toasted bread with olives in it...yummy! And a side of butter for the bread & some delicious fruit spread. Everything was cooked fresh so make sure you have a dining partner you can talk to. It is a bit of a wait but well worth it! A very special place. The chef/owner/waiter (he's the only one working the place) is a perfectionist. For now, at least, he only handles three tables at any given time. Anyone who showed up without a reservation was offered 8pm or another day. Don't feel,slighted, that's just the way he runs it. Menu changes daily and uses interesting grains and fresh seafood. It's like being in the home dining room of someone who can really cook. Unexpectedly well-curated wine list, and even a few cocktails. You can get wines by the 3 oz our so you can try a few. The menu encourages, but does not require, multiple courses. Prices are fairly reasonable and the bill includes a tip. We make it a point to visit Zach's whenever we are here. Today I met a college friend at Zach's for brunch. I am visiting in town and she looked up a few spots, so we chose to meet here. It looked super cute and the menu choices for today sounded awesome. I was seated and ordered the French press coffee to share. So good! For my meal, I ordered the 2 eggs/bacon meal. I substituted bread for potatoes and got a side of Brussels sprouts because I'm obsessed with them. My girlfriend got the eggs Benedict with bacon, but I guess he ran out, but added prosciutto. Our meal took a little bit because Zach was taking orders and cooking I'm sure. I was so impressed he was doing all of that, and believe me, it was worth the wait. He has culinary talent for sure! Eggs perfectly cooked over medium, bacon crisp, potatoes were large, thick slices, and the Brussels were outstanding! I saved the second egg and 2 potato slices for breakfast tomorrow. Food so fresh and clean- you leave feeling satisfied not stuffed. Overall, an A+ meal and a great, cozy atmosphere. I told my in-laws to definitely visit here soon!! read more

This a great date night spot for anniversary. We have tried the multiple course meal with wine pairing and their brunch. While the portions are small you do get full from the multiple courses and it fun to try each dish. Our favorite was the duck which was cooked perfectly. It is hard to find a place that does duck well and Zach does a phenomenal job. The restaurant is sensitive and very considerate of food allergies. The price for dinner includes gratuity. My husband and I have been coming here every time we visit the Newport area. We've been to this great, hole-in-the-wall bistro about 5 times already, and each time the food was always amazing. I love how the menu is different every night, you can really tell that the chef makes a great effort to come up with something new and out of the ordinary every day! The menu is not very big either, but offers a variety of tasting options with wine pairings and in different portions. The amount of food given for the price and taste is well worth the visit. This tiny restaurant had some positives and negatives. First, it is open later than many of the other restaurants in town, which I appreciate. Unfortunately, the service was pretty slow, but I think there was only one server. The menu is pretty small, and they were out of the entree I ordered (NY Strip). She instead offered me a Wagyu steak that was not on the menu. Additionally I ordered the buffalo mozzarella and tomato appetizer/salad. The entree was a small portion, which I expected to be overly expensive, but turned out to be reasonably priced. The mozzarella was AMAZING, one of the best I've ever had anywhere. I didn't get anything to drink, but the drink/wine menu was extensive and appeared to be of high quality. The bread must have been gluten free, as it resembled some type of hybrid scone that was obviously made from some sort of hippie sawdust pressed together like plywood. But overall, plywood scone bread aside, good flavors and reasonable prices for the area. read more

First things first - the smell. We walked in and immediately were hit with an overwhelmingly rancid smell that was so strong that we nearly left. The restaurant did not smell like food at all. This might be a landlord issue and not Zach's fault but it needs to be addressed immediately. The food was all over the place. My wife's crab cake was excellent, full of crab with a nice crispy fennel garnish. My braised venison was succulent but the orzo under it was mushy and had a strange wad of gluey cheese. Veg was barely seasoned or cooked, it was basically seared raw cauliflower, and it was piled on both our dishes. Over all everything needed salt. Wife's rockfish and chips were super dry. Desserts were excellent. Wine list was great and cocktails were superb. Might try this one more time with a different menu. read more

My wife and I were visiting town and after our meeting were famished. It was after nine in the evening and we didn't see many options. We saw Zack's Bistro and knowing that the term "Bistro" often covers many sins we thought we'll chance it anyhow. I am so glad we did. It is situated in an old house, making it comfortable and cosy. The menu in bistro fashion is a moving and seasonal target, but the menu is large enough that you can find a something you will like,or even adore. Two items I ate that were wonderful were the mussels and for dessert Persian rose ice cream. I note that they also serve breakfast. read more
