I really enjoy their Egg Bahn-Mi. It's my favorite. I can't get enough of it. I love the sweetness of the pickled vegetables and the creaminess of the egg combined with the mayo. Every bite is hearty and it's truly a "healthy" packed portion sandwich - they do not skimp on ingredients, it's well worth the price and you will be satisfied after you consume it! I've also recently had their Vietnamese coffee which is well worth the sweetness, caffeine and calories. I have also had smoothies and a vanilla latte from time to time. Customer service is always exceptional (even when it's busy!) and the funnest part is they sell LOTTO tickets at the counter or by the machine. I've been going to Cafe Tapioca since 2016 it's definitely a staple in the area. The owner Michelle has always made me and my family feel special, my daughter loves to go in and spend time with her. I didn't have much expectation coming here. Just from the look of the shop, it did not seem promising. However, never judge a book by its cover! I stopped in on my way home to grab lunch. This was my first time here. The door was propped open and I was the only customer at the time. I walked in to scope out the place. I wasn't immediately greeted, but it gave me time to browse the menu. The employee who helped me was nice and friendly. He was equally patient also. I ordered a few donuts and of course a banh mi. I ordered the #A8 Grilled pork with peanuts: Crispy baguette with grilled pork slices, toasted peanuts, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, and mayonnaise. There were a few tables inside but I opted to take mine to go. I did not have to wait long and many more customers had arrived. The banh mi also had jalapeños but I took those out. This sandwich was massive, bigger than my hand, and she was stuffed. I haven't eaten a banh mi in a long time and it hit the spot. We have been frequenting this place recently. My husband usually buys lotto tickets from here. And its just a convenient place to grab donuts of croissants whenever I am running errands. Service has always been friendly and helpful. The re-did the place a while back and it is much more open and spacious. They also make their donuts in-house now. No complaints on the food here. Cafe Tapioca will put Hercules on the map. I've been coming to Cafe Tapioca since I was in high school, and it just keeps getting better and better. The customer service is great. They are always so pleasant and warm, even when they are busy and moving fast. I used to come here for the donuts and avocado smoothie, and now they have the best banh mi sandwiches that I have ever had! Today I got the grilled pork banh mi, my mom got shredded pork, and my sister got tofu. Each one was incredible! I was surprised in the difference in flavor between the grilled pork and the shredded pork. The grilled pork was a little sweet, while the shredded pork tasted almost a little smoky, and I might be wrong, but I think it may have some shredded pork skin! Everything in the banh mi tasted so fresh; the cucumbers were wonderfully crisp, the pickled veggies nicely tart, and the house-made bread was perfectly crisp on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside! This review is solely on the Banh Mi sandwich. After seeing multiple raving reviews from our fellow neighbors and Yelper, I tried it. Unfortunately I can only give it a 3 star. The bun is way too thick, not airy and not crispy. There wasn't any devil's ham spread. On the positive side, the meat was good and a descent amount, the pickled veggies were delicious, which perfectly balanced the meat. I got my favorite lychee Jasmine tea, as usual it was very good. Not your typical bagel/boba/donut/coffee/convenience store! It's ALL of those! You can also play lotto here and they have a machine you can buy scratchers from. Taking in orders is pretty fast but depending on how busy they are, it could be a little bit to get your food. They don't accept online orders. We used to live in Hercules and went to this place all the time but moved to Martinez a few years ago. Today my five year old wanted to go to the donut shop that she likes in Martinez but when we got there it was unexpectedly closed for a long weekend. An absolutely insane meltdown ensued in the parking lot. After discussing the situation with my 12 year old we settled on going to the donut shop she remembered when she was younger and we lived in Hercules, Cafe Tapioca. The five year olds meltdown continued all the way to Hercules. She could not be reasoned with. When we got to Cafe Tapioca and finally dragged her into the store I said "Hey look a pink donut with rainbow sprinkles do you want that!?" to which she responded "NO I WANT A PINK DONUT WITH BLUE SPRINKLES" Normally I don't negotiate with my child when she's being ungovernable but in this case her little brain was clearly broken and she simply could not deal with the situation. She hid under the table screaming as we entered minute 53 of the meltdown. I tried tickling her and coaxing her out to no avail. I finally had to pull her out, asked my 12 year old to grab our stuff, and was carrying the little one to the car when two of the guys from Cafe Tapioca ran into the parking lot saying "Were making her a pink donut with blue sprinkles!" I was surprised at how they upgraded this place and made their area lighter and brighter. It's cleaner and has more space for customers to roam around. This review is solely for their donuts. Donuts are one of my weaknesses and I like to come to Cafe Tapicoca to treat myself or the family to some fresh donuts. We like to each pick out a pastry and then share with each tower at home. I sometimes like getting donut holes too, at $3 a dozen it is a steal! The owners are super friendly. Sometimes service is a bit slow if someone in front of the line ordered a bunch of drinks. But usually I can get in and out in 5 minutes. I've never personally witnessed the owners being rude to any customers the times I've been a there. I don't know why there's so many people saying so. Be careful on trying to save paper at this establishment. When I ordered here and chose the option to not print a receipt, the extremely tall employee forgot my drink. I was obviously with another person and ordered 2 drinks. We waited for 20 minutes sitting next to eachother, but somehow he thought we ordered only 1 drink and he seemed surprised when we corrected him. So he demanded to see my bank statement. Goodluck if you aren't tech savy, you'll probably have to run to the bank and print it out. Don't they have the details of the order on the cashier? Its 2025. Are you really going to ask every customer who doesn't print a receipt for their bank statement? It's hard to tell if he's just causing friction intentionally cause they don't greet or smile neither. I heard one of the employees also saying "I want to go home" while waiting in line. It's sad cause the food and drink is good but the extra verification just to get your order is not worth it. This place is a local gem! It's a very casual coffee shop that serves lots of delicious items such as donuts and breakfast sandwiches. The employees are always kind and so happy to see customers. The service is always quick and there can even be long lines on some mornings. Donuts are amazing but I always come for their breakfast sandwiches and Vietnamese iced coffee. First AND last: One AND done! I did a run at Home Depot and Big Lots nearby and Hubbers and parental units (who were all home at the time) felt like a drink and a quick snack. Hubbers said he's only ordered drinks there (no grub) and warned me it could take a minute, "but really good." 2 customers already waiting for their orders. One customer in line ahead of me. My immediate thought was that maybe Hubbers might be exaggerating. It can't possibly take as long as he described. Cashier acknowledged my presence after she was done helping the customer ahead of me, saying, "I'll be right with you." Immediately after saying that, she noticed another person walking in and lining up behind me. She then proceeded to make a drink. And guess who that drink is for: the person who lined up behind me. She was served before everyone else (and by that, I mean me and those ahead of me patiently waiting for their already-paid goodies). I even heard this customer tell the cashier, "You're awesome!" as I got bypassed for her to pay. I immediately assumed she phoned in her order. But then she went, "I would also like to have a couple of glazed donuts, please?" Nope. Not a phone order. I think it's safe to assume she's a regular and goes there often enough for the cashier to know the exact drink she wanted. Yeah. I was annoyed. But you know... moving on. After a few more minutes, I put in an order for cantaloupe slushy boba for Hubbers, ham and egg croissant for Pops and turkey croissant for Mom. I opted out of getting anything for myself as the initial experience just minutes prior left a bad taste. Waited. And waited. And waited. And why does it take 25-30 minutes to get a drink and 2 sandwiches?! (So, yeah, Hubbers wasn't exaggerating.) But I'm not one to shoot everything down since I haven't tried any of their offerings. But I'll give them this: their sandwiches spoke quantity. They are bigger and fuller than most croissant sandwiches I've seen. And that's as far as it goes. Because quality?! Not so much. I got to try a bit of both eats and there was nothing special about them. No umph, no umami, nothing. FOOD: 2. Quantity: good. Quality: not so good. SERVICE: 1. VALUE: 1. Not worth the food or the wait. PARKING: Shared with many other businesses. Not an issue, plenty of spots available. OVERALL: 1.5. I wouldn't have cared about someone behind me getting served first if they were a little more efficient, but that tacked on to the wait time I had to endure for something so subpar. I am leaving a review for their fresh baked croissants. It is huge and worth the price of $3 each. If you come early in the am,, you may still find them in the tray they were baked in, It is warm and tasty! I spread butter and it's delicious with my morning coffee! I can't say the same for their donuts. I bought 2 chocolate donuts and an apple fritter and tasted old! I was disappointed! I paid $6 for them! Michelle was quick to make my Honeydew milk tea with boba. From all the times I've come to get drinks here, the boba consistently has a soft texture, like it was freshly made. Previously due to COVID, they only accepted payments through phone and card, but this most recent trip when I tried paying with card, Michelle actually asked if I had cash instead since there was a 50 cent charge to use card.
