They serve coffee, smoothies, refreshers, other (muffins & bagels), and are known for their empanadas. The person that took my order was friendly and gave me good recommendation when I asked what's popular. Got a couple drinks and some empanadas (beef, chicken,spinach,mushroom,apple,and pineapple). Those empanadas when brought it were still warm and has good flavor. They also have sauces in 4oz containers (chimichiriri, mango habanero,ranch) if you like, I got a couple,but I like the chimichurri. Came here on a whim while visiting my cousins. Such a cute location and dog friendly. Only outdoor seating but you're granted with a cute view of the water so it is not bad. We ordered 3 pumpkin spice lattes and 1 Vietnamese coffee. Drinks were great! We also ordered empanadas (chorizo, beef, chicken, and breakfast). Empanadas were not that good (minus one star). Dough was undercooked unfortunately but the flavor was there. Service was okay. Overall I'd come back purely for the drinks and maybe the alfajores (if they actually have any dulce de leche ones in stock). read more

Hizcafe has been serving the City of Hercules awhile now and they are doing a great job on people walking along the Bayfront. A coffee place with a good view of the water and the trains passing by. I tried the entire drink that is on the menu. I do like the Strawberry Refresher. It is a nice cold drink to have while sitting down at the table watching people strolling along the Bayfront. Super cute tiny cafe by the bay! It felt surreal - like it's an extremely cute residental street. Lots of parking by the bay. They have great selection of colombian coffee, empanadas, and alfajors! Just tried their new drink cafe de Olla.... I'm totally disappointed! It tasted like watered down coffee with a dash of cinnamon which was very subtle, and I even added cream. The ingredients for the drink were listed on a paper in the front to order which said: raw sugar, cinnamon, and something else that I can't remember. I had authentic cafe de Olla in Mexico and the cheap ones in the bag/jar you can make at home so I know how it should taste. I recommend the owner to work on the servings of the ingredients to make it taste better for customers to have a better experience to bring them back for more. First time trying this place out and it did not disappoint! It is basically an order to go and dine outside place. Seating is very limited only about 12-15 chairs outside. It's right next to the shore so you can count on a nice view and fresh breeze! The service is really good, employees are fast and very kind. The food and drinks are also really great! I tried the passion fruit refresher with sparkling water and lychee jelly which was nice and refreshing ;) I got through half the drink before remembering to take a photo. The empanadas were super tasty! They were both packed with flavor and the dough was a nice soft texture. I tried it with and without mango habanero sauce and either way was really yummy! If you live in the area or are dropping by the area you should visit this place for a great drink or snack! Hizcafe is more of a grab and go type of situation, since they only offer outdoor seating. This would be a great spot to sit and catch up with friends on a warm, sunny day, and there is a nice view of the water over the train tracks if you look west. If you are looking for a cafe to get some work done, this is not the spot. Also, they do not have any bathrooms. I got the iced vanilla latte, which was ok in terms of taste. For caffeine purposes, it did its job. I also got the chocolate walnut alfajore, and it hit the spot. The dulce de leche filling contains walnuts, which added a nice crunch and offset some of the sweetness. Saw the many reviews raving about the empanadas, which I'll have to try next time. read more

For this visit we had the cafe latte and the espresso macchiato. We also had the breakfast empanada served warm - I wish it was a little bit more toasted. With surprising regularity over the past couple of years, I've been walking back and forth over the five miles that make up the San Pablo Bay Regional Trail. I say 'surprising' because I don't live nearby, but what the hell, it gives me my FitBit steps next to the calm water over fairly flat pavement. The commercial development hasn't caught up with the residential though I only noticed recently that there were small businesses on the last block of Railroad Ave in Hercules. At the very end of the street is this friendly coffee spot which serves a specialty Colombian blend coffee. It's not a cafe with indoor seating but rather an embedded kiosk with an inviting patio - which frankly makes it more ideal during a pandemic. They could probably use a couple of sandwich boards on the trail at the edge of the waterfront parking because it was purely by chance that I noticed they were open for business. It turned out they have quite a menu of coffee, tea, and sandwiches. There were also empanadas, and other baked goods like alfajores in keeping with their Colombian theme. I ordered the $3.89 Medium Mocha Latte, and it was just the right temperature libation for a late afternoon treat (photo: https://bit.ly/3mVypRO). Whenever a new spot pops up in Hercules, I make it a point to give it a try. This time it's a Colombian cafe at the corner of Railroad Ave overlooking the bay. It looks like a nice place to grab a bite and/or hot beverage. You order at the window and there is a some outdoor seating in the mini patio. Music was playing from a rock that looked like a radio - clever! Menu has a bunch of sandwiches, some pastries, empanadas and a variety of drinks. I ordered a chicken and beef empanada, ($4 each) an Alfajor meringue, and a lemon brownie ($3.50 each) to go since I had groceries in the car. I toasted the empanadas when I got home because I like them warm. Each were a bit small, had a nice flavorful chicken and beef filling and the dough was ok but overall nothing special. I did notice from other reviewers' photos that there were sauces that came with the empanada but I wasn't offered any. They would have helped elevate the experience. The desserts were very sweet- I didn't care for the lemon brownie but I did like the Alfajor meringue better. This is a traditional South American dessert that has two shortbread cookies coated in meringue with dulce de leche in the middle. It's nice to enjoy with tea. I haven't tried their drinks yet so I may be missing out a star for that. I may be back to give it another shot. read more

Cute little corner coffee shop, right on the water! My husband and I took a walk along the trails and stopped for breakfast here. We got a hot matcha, a java chip iced drink, and two empanadas each (I got ham and cheese, and he got chorizo). The matcha was good, but a little sweeter than I'd normally prefer. The empanadas were decent size. I'm glad I got two (one would have been a very small breakfast, but two was filling). Mine were stuffed with a lot of cheese. The grand opening was on 11/10/21. The location: There is no indoor seating or a building that customers walk into as the cafe was designed for customers to order at a window and enjoy their drinks on the outdoor patio. Drove by and saw a small corner shop opened and I was craving for some empanadas the other day. Price wise, the empanadas are a bit pricy. It was around $4 for one BUT the taste is everything. They give a spicy sauce that pairs well with the empanada. I honestly wished they were a bit bigger to compensate for the dent in my wallet but it was all good. Found this great cafe with shaded outdoor seating area that's dog-friendly on a cute neighborhood street with ocean bay view with plenty street parking. There are joggers, dog walkers, family with strollers walking along the ocean view. Also, I saw trains go by occasionally but from a distance -- so no train noise at all. Very scenic. Great coffee and freshly made (non-greasy) Argentinian empanadas (highly recommend "mushroom") with great chimichurri sauce, which appears to be homemade (the sauce is free, but you do need to ask for it). Their "Paisa chicken sandwich" is awesome! Ask to have it on their Dutch bread (options: Dutch or sourdough). If you go around 9a on Sunday, plenty parking & outdoor seating. It starts to get busy around 10:30 or 11a on Sun. Of note, there is no indoor seating, WiFi, or rest room. I took some scenic pictures of the street it's on + parking areas + menu. The empanadas I had early in AM were warm and tasty (definitely will return for the mushroom one). As for Paisa chicken sandwich, the Dutch sandwich bread was fresh, chicken was moist, the flavor was great. It was filling without feeling heavy. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the food + latte since I was enjoying them so much... This is a beautiful gem to visit, especially on a nice day for brunch/lunch + you (and your dog) can go for a walk around the area afterward. Highly recommend! read more

We loved this place. The location is absolutely beautiful and you can see the bay from the cafe. The person at the ordering window was incredibly polite and very kind and answered all of our questions patiently. We ordered a java chip smoothie and a cookies and cream smoothie and both were pretty good! We also tried the chocolate walnut and merengue alfajores and both were good. The chocolate walnut one was particularly very tasty. I also tried the banana muffin and it was quite good as well. From a food and drink standpoint, we found absolutely nothing to complain about. I see some people complaining about the sandwiches in their reviews. We didn't try the sandwiches - so cannot comment on that. But the smoothies and baked goods that we tried were all very good. This cafe has outdoor seating only. The tables do have umbrellas too. It has maybe 3-4 tables. It was relatively quiet when we visited around 4 PM. The music was very soothing. The place has a really nice vibe overall. This seems like a new business and I am sure it'll do well because the place does have a unique vibe, good location and friendly staff. I'd definitely visit again. There's a trail right next to the cafe too. We enjoyed a nice leisurely walk there as well. The weather was great and the sound of the water and wind was very soothing. The sandwiches are so good and nice and warm! The guy that owns this place gives great customer service. The ingredients are always fresh on the sandwiches and the Dutch crunch bread is never stale. I am still working on finding my go-to order for coffee at this place, I ordered an Ube latte which was great, but this time I went it seems they have taken it off the menu. So I went with the taro latte and idk, flavor just wasn't all there for me. But I'm willing to try the plenty of other lattes available on the menu. As an addicted morning walker, of the Pinole-Hercules Bay side, I welcomed the opening of the tiny Hizcafe last year to snag that morning cup of coffee. I have not been disappointed. It took a few tries to find my favorite brew, but I have finally settled on their Breve' Latte. This nectar from the coffee gods is so well balanced, that no sugar is needed - great for diabetics like me. This is a family run business which is worth supporting, and the charming Karin always serves her drinks with a smile. Walked past this place a few times previously so I decided to give it a try. Ordered two sandwiches and a vanilla latte iced. I asked for no jalapeños but one of the sandwiches had them anyway. Both of the sandwiches were meh and the cheese array did not have flavor. The Turkey sandwich seriously looked and tasted like ham and honestly we couldn't even finish them- they just were not good which is disappointing for the price. The vanilla latte iced was just so/ so and tasted more like something you could make at home on your own. I've noticed from other reviews that some other items have been reviewed as tasty, this could be a situation where some items are just hit or miss.
