The cafe and food is great!..Baristas however, not so much. I've had my fair share of how it is in the food service business however the two times I've visited was distasteful. I don't know if it's the color of my skin or appearance but I'm always met with an attitude by a particular girl barista with brown/reddish hair as if I'm a hazard to communicate with. We were at the korean bbq next door and my niece wanted coffee so we walked here to check it out. We opt to get the Matcha Shaved Ice (Korean Bingsu) instead and it did not disappoint. It was so light and the matcha taste was not too strong. I am not a fan of matcha and this was good for my taste. The staff were nice. Price wasn't that bad. And they have their own parking lot that shares with the establishments in the area. We went on a Sunday after lunch so we didn't have any issues finding a parking spot. I love going to this place for dessert! I also love that they're open so late. They have a variety of different desserts and my favorites are their sweet potato donut and their croffles! Cafe Upper is a PAINFULLY aesthetic cafe with a great vibe and tasty drinks! I swung by while I was in Ktown the other day. I ordered online and was ASTOUNDED to see that some of the specialty drinks were over $8, but there was a morning discount (I think it lasts until 12:30?) that brought the price to $6.50, so if you come here come early. I got the pistachio einspanner and it was ready quickly. Before noon, even on a weekend, the cafe was pretty empty. It's not on the main street of ktown though, which may explain it. I got my drink to go and I loved the pistachio chunks on top as well as the ladyfinger it came with. Definitely recommend drinking it with a straw, as I fully choked on the heavy dusting of cocoa powder on top. After some aggressive stirring, I managed to get some of the THICK cream on top mixed into the coffee. The drink itself was very nice and smooth, and the pistachio cream tasted like melted pistachio ice cream! I dipped my ladyfinger into the cream + coffee and it was actually amazing. I wanted more ladyfingers to eat with it! I've tried other cafes in ktown offering similar menus, but I think I enjoy the drink I got at Cafe Upper the most! For starters, the interior is a minimalist's aesthetic dream - cement like walls, beautiful light fixtures, and LA's newest style with boxed stones as options for seats. Just like any other vibey cafe in K-town of course, prepare to have to wait for a proper table (if you want to do work) even at 2 pm on a Thursday. Huge parking lot located in the back but also gets pretty packed! I got the matcha einspanner which came out to $8.50. They definitely use quality matcha and the vienna cream top was rich and creamy but I do wish the drink ratio was better proportioned. I personally felt like it was mostly cream that I ended up having so that was a tad bit disappointing for what I paid for. Price point for what I got definitely makes me second guess whether I'd come back again but definitely great service & sweet staff is an A+. read more

Fun little cafe! They have a crossaint/waffle hybrid that seems to be their signature dish. I ordered that topped with some cream and berries, plus some strawberry syrup. Liked the wheatiness and it wasn't too sweet as the strawberry syrup provided a nice bit of tang/acidity to balance out the sweet cream. Also ordered a matcha latte and a strawberry smoothie. Would probably skip the strawberry smoothie next time, nothing to write home about. Thankfully it wasn't particularly sweet but it was also lacking in strawberry flavor. Seems like a good place to study or catch up with a friend -- not too noisy inside and a good amount of seating. Service is pretty fast -- it's like Starbucks where you order at the counter and then they call you over to pick up at another counter right beside. Very cool and unique design/concept! Feels very hip on the inside with metal designs. Drinks were fantastic but the star of the show was the strawberry croffle. Extremely decadent and delicious with the right amount of sweetness and balance! The ice cream on the side was also a nice surprise to help wash down the sugar with more sugar LOL Taro drink was a bit underwhelming as it didn't have any actual taro flavor which was disappointing. I've heard a lot about this cafe, and had the opportunity to visit this past weekend. I'm really glad that there was plenty of parking (and free!!) :) Entering into the cafe, they have a unique theme, and it was clean. Unfortunately, I was taken aback by the prices for the drinks and food items they had. I was the most interested in their matcha einspanner, since I heard a lot of great reviews and saw that the matcha color was clear (hopefully indicating that the matcha flavor would be strong). After paying around $9 for the matcha drink, it was definitely a lot more creamy than matcha-flavor. The matcha flavor was still there, but not as much as I was expecting. I also got to try the pistachio and taro einspanner. I could not really taste the pistachio flavor, but at least the drink was pretty? Haha. The taro one isn't bad, but it also wasn't what I was expecting for a taro drink. Cake slices were $11, which I think is also a bit overpriced for a small non-in-house-made cake. We got a slice of tiramisu cake.. and were disappointed sadly. Service did not really stand out to me, but I'm glad that the wifi was steady enough to study and do work. I stopped by after I flew into LA, as I saw they offered einspanners and it was on my way to where I was headed! I ended up getting the matcha einspanner. They offer 20% off any drink from 8AM-2PM, which is awesome. I'm not sure how the matcha einspanner is made because I haven't had them often. But after mixing the matcha throughout the drink and taking a sip, I really liked it! You could taste the matcha pretty well, as well as the cream that was on top. It was a nice drink to have that morning. The only thing I would say is sometimes I would drinks clumps of matcha. I'm not sure if that's because of the mixing but I don't think that's typical? Staff was nice. You order at the counter and they hand you a pager that will let you know to pick up your items when ready. They have lids, straws, sleeves, etc. off to the side if needed. I will say, their coffees are really strong and will get you through the day, but they have good flavor. The pistachio drink came with actual pistachios too. The matcha was really good also. One of my go-to cafes! I really enjoy their matcha here (matcha latte w/ oat milk) and the fact that they have a parking lot!!! (GOLDMINE IN KTOWN). Topping has that strong distinct pistachio nutty flavor, very light and lightly sweetened. Coffee had bitter aftertaste that tampers if you give the drink a nice mix. Very cute presentation with the ladyfinger on top (very yum if you use it to give the drink a swirl and then eat it). Service - friendly and quick :D there were lots of plastic low chairs/tables near the back entrance that seems to be more for friends talking/hanging out whereas there are formal tables near the front/street entrance of the shop for more of studying.
