I love this place. I enjoyed a night of comedy, live music and to my surprise very good food. Usually a place that caters to an entertainment vibe usually serves sub-par food. But I was very impressed. I had a simple crispy chicken sandwich with fries and could have easily had another. (And mind you, the portion was not small, it was just right). Service and the way they talk to people (including manager) is veeery bad. I am not the one to complain but this guys just very strange. They did a mistake with our bill, we waited 30 minutes for it to be sorted (another 10 minutes to pray them to fix it). Disgusted by this place! Music was amazing but venue is horrible. They pack people in like sardines to make money. Has to be a fire hazard. If you come in a party of two, they make you sit at a large table across from one another, then pack other parties into your table. They will not allow you to sit with your date. If you think I'm kidding, don't take my word for it, call and ask or find out for yourself when you get there. The venue is underground with low ceilings, ambience is pretty but if you get hot or claustrophobic easy, forget it. Booths made for 4 people are jammed packed with 8 people. If you don't go with a party of eight, plan on sitting with strangers, good luck trying to get out to use the restroom. Speaking of restrooms, the line for the two stahl woman's rooms is often long. The staff that run the place are cocky assholes, our server was nice though. There was a little cocky guy that acted like he owned the place bossing people around by the restrooms, I witnessed him kick a woman out for attempting to enter the men's room because the woman's room line was so long. This is a second time we bought tickets and very disappointed. The music itself is really good; however, the service is unacceptable. We had to wait 30 min for the waiter to come and take our order; while other people who came much later were already eating. Another 20 min with reminder to get a water and when finally food came salad we order didn't have chicken. After show was over, we had to wait another 15 min and hunt our waiter down to get a check, while he already started to take new orders for upcoming new group of people. We bought tickets for 2 more shows, but will try to cancel it and get our money back. read more

Bad experience. Went there one night with a group of 4. Charged $15 cover per person, only to be seated in a cramped booth with another group. Drinks were expensive. Service was slow and rude. Band was just ok, nothing worth paying a high cover for. After 4 songs we were asked to pay another $15 cover per person if we wanted to stay for the next set. I've never been to a bar or club that charged cover per band set. Left after approximately 45 min, one round of overpriced drinks, and full cover for the tail end of a band set for 4 people with $160 tab. Will never go back. read more

i am absolutely appalled by the staff and management at this establishment. i came with 3 other girlfriends and there were two empty tables but they would not accommodate us. not only that but they told us to stand on the sidewalk next to the establishment and then another one of their workers harassed us to "get out of his way". a manager was called and we tried to find some logic in that conversation to no end. the "manager" (if that's actually who he is) basically told us we could stand there all night. this place is run by the rudest people you'll ever encounter and i highly recommend spending your hard earned money somewhere else. read more

When you come out after two hours of good music and entertainment, and realise your group of 4 just spent $350, its hard to justify the fun portion. You come out feeling ripped off because you know all you drank were beers and well drinks and ate some standard bar grub. Positives are great local bands,who put on a good show. Waiters who are friendly and attentive. But which table you get seated at makes a diff so try and get the ones closer to the stage, but do not make the mistake of trying to get on stage, however chill and relaxed the band may sound/feel. When we got the check back, it already had a 15% tip written in (which is already BS). The band was great, but the service was absolutely disgusting. My server, Eliran, came up to me after getting the check and argued that I didn't leave a sufficient enough tip for him. Being offended that he had the nerve to complain about the tip (which some people forget is OPTIONAL), I told him I wasn't changing it and walked away. On my way out he heckled me, calling me cheap. So, I asked for the receipt back and changed the tip amount to $0. When I later checked my debit card transactions it appears the server gave himself an UNAUTHORIZED 20% tip. Went on a Friday night. Lined up about 830pm for the 9 pm show. They opened doors at 9 and checked our ID then led us downstairs. We got there early so we chose a large booth but sat to the end of it . They said we had to sit across from each other as the table would fit 8 people. It was across from the stage so we had a good view, slightly elevated from the tables. Four other people joined us , two other couples. Two ladies came later but it was kind of tight so they moved. 8 fits but only if you are all small to average build. Comedian cane on and he was HYSTERICAL. Musicians came in after and played all kinds of music , pop, reggae, rock, Latin. They did the duet from a star is born, "shallow" and absolutely sounded great. Latin guy came on and ROCKEd the house, people danced in the aisles. Age varied from twenty somethings to seventies. All groups seemed to enjoy. We ordered cheesecake and wings. It was very enjoyable, loved the comedienne and the LIVE music, would recommend ! read more

This is my 2nd time at Cafe Wha! You pay $6 per person for the show....but no one said anything to me about a 2 drink minimum so not sure if that changed. Really good comedy! The live band was also pretty good.... They didn't play too many songs I was familiar with but that was just that night... so it's hit or miss....Our waitress was also very friendly. She heard me say a cocktail name instead of blue moon, which this place is super loud so the mistake could have been made by anyone...She let me try the cocktail out for free, but I honestly could not even drink it, way too sweet for me.. so she took it back without a charge...and wasn't rude about it at all.... read more

I went to Cafe Wha for Brown Rice Family's performance. I came on solo and was asked to sit at the most undesired place which was two feet from the stage. I was not allowed to sit at the regular table setting although 90% of the seats the entire night were empty. I don't mind to sit closer to those beautiful boys of Brown Rice Family. But the bench I was asked to sit was used by the band to put their personal stuff and if someone sits too close to the stage, it's disturbing to them when dancing. Music was great. Service was OUTRAGEOUS. Without the music and the artists, this place probably would never be able to exist. For a place where The Van Halen and Jimi Hendrix used to perform, and where future legend like Brown Rice Family is performing, it's a shame to be ran like this. read more

I remember growing up watching the opening credits of SNL and thinking that NYC was the jam. They made it feel like every flippin' moment of the city was to be embraced, enjoyed, savored, licked up, regurgitated, spit back up, swallowed whole, and repeated. And now calling this place home for some years, I can say that's the dang truth. Cafe Wha reminds me of those fly by shots of the opening of SNL. It's quintessential NYC. Each time I go it's unpredictable and fun. A medley of locals and tourists just trying to figure it out. Whether "it" is whether or not their date will manifest into something, if "it" was a wise decision to have that last shot, if "it" was that random yodeler during open mic night, if "it" was the decision to move to NY. I have heard nothing but terrible, terrible things about Cafe Wha? from other New York locals. I have a Welsh friend who lived in NYC for quite a few years and L-O-V-E-D Cafe Wha? - she wouldn't shut up about it. Because it was her birthday and I have to do whatever the birthday princess requests, I went to Cafe Wha on a Saturday night. The birthday girl had made a reservation and our group of 15 walked right in without waiting on a line and were escorted to our table next to the stage. It was dark, the ceilings are low and I already had a sour taste in my mouth about this joint. Le sigh. I scooted my rump into a booth, smiled politely and ordered a Maker's Mark. I knew I would need the strong stuff. The band started to play pretty soon after we placed our order for food and drinks. I started head-bobbing to the music because it was good...and then I started to sway my hips in my seat as I found it to be rather enjoyable. And then, something magical happened. I started loving it. I was full on belting out the lyrics to each song the band covered, everything from old school No Doubt (Tragic Kingdom forever!) to Bob Marley and some contemporary hits you hear on the radio right now. I could sing along to everything, and I graced our whole party with my really very amazing vocal stylings. Thank all that is good and holy everyone else was singing along too. And drunk. I was surrounded by drunks. That helped. The drinks kept coming, I will say the waitress was extremely attentive. And because there was no dance floor and everyone had to have a reservation for a table and all butts needed a seat, it didn't feel overwhelming and crowded, even though the space is cave-like and underground. Every time my drink was almost empty, another appeared or the waitress was asking if I wanted another. Hells to the yes. We also ordered a spread of appetizers, the mozzarella sticks (actually really good!) the Whachos (REALLY good. They layered the cheese and chips so every bite had nacho supreme goodness on it) calamari (standard. Not amazing, but not bad!) and the quesadilla (also delicious! Not too oily and greasy, didn't fall apart when picked up, chicken cooked well). After hearing so many bad things about it, I was pleasantly surprised at how great the service, food and band were. I mean the band was really, really good. They played continuously for almost two hours. By the time I left I was a bit deaf, full, drunk and a very happy girl. We had so much fun, our whole group went back on Sunday night (no cover on Sundays!) and we ate and drank, danced in the aisles this time (less people there) and had a complete blast once again. I couldn't even believe I went twice in 24 hours and loved every minute of each time. Only downside? It's not cheap. The $15 cover per person is hard to swallow, and the drinks and apps really start to add up. Of Note: There's not service in the basement. So I would suggest making a rez, telling your friends it's in your name and calling it a day. Trying to get in touch with anyone proved impossible once we were at our table. I think it's a stellar place for groups to get together and enjoy a little awesome live music and attentive service, but you definitely pay for it. Wow. The experience that I had at this place, was so bad, I'm actually afraid to explain. But I will. I came here for a friend's birthday. I got there earlier than the whole crew did so I took a table. A waitress with pig tails (?) walked over handed me a menu, and said, "Here you go." I didn't ask for one, and the way she did it, it seemed as if there was a drink minimum, so I ordered a soda. I don't carry cash often because I always have my cards with me. When I was ready to pay, the waitress comes to me and says, "Oh, our credit card machine is down. Cash only." I looked at her in confusion and disgust. So, what does she do to rectify this situation? She tells me I will have to go get money from the ATM. I have no idea where the ATM is, so I ask a guy working the door and he says to go to CVS down the street and get some cash back.I did that, came back (oh, and they decided to hold my NY STATE ID as collateral . Lol...whatever it takes I guess.) I was so upset. I finally found my friend and the crowd and sat with them. Overall, an awful night. How can all of your credit card/debit machines break down? I have been there several times for the music and faced all types of bullying waiters and servers. Some keep insistently pushing clients to eat/drink. There are also the ones who suggests new and unaware customers (specially tourists) that there is a minimum drink charge, when in fact there is not. Truth of the matter is, Bob Dylan, The Boss, Woody Allen and The Velvet Underground NEVER played at the Cafe Wha plenty of us walk by today...feeling strongly put off by the calendar year we live in. Back then Cafe Wha didn't serve disgusting Long Island Ice Tea's for $12 and Frozen Margaritas that induce vomiting. That Cafe Wha was just a mere building in an area that embraced openness and change...nothing more, but also everything to Us and Them. A walk down MacDougal Street today feels more Genteel than Bohemian nature....and this is OK. It's just different...an integral component of the change that must be free to exist. I'm not going to bash a flourishing Greenwich Village simply because it's a shadow of it's former self like Haight Ashburry, Telegraph Avenue or even Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz. As long as any in flux of tourism is countered by that same original feeling of openness and change, these places will be friendly environments for those of us who have always seeked out friendly vibes and enjoyed hanging out will all types of people. This is not to say that MacDougal Street or Cafe Wha is the place where the purest of Hipster urges can be sought out and fufilled. Only true ignorance would conclude this. I'm simply saying not to write it off because you fancy yourself God when it comes to gleaming the coolest of urban experiences. Why is Cafe Wha still worth a decension down a dark stairwell at 12:30 AM????? It's rather simple, people still come here to listen to good music and have a good time and don't seem to give a shit what anyone else has to say about it. Make no mistake, this place is a tourist trap (see other reviewers locations). With that being said their house band is a blast to watch. Watch the cover charge at the door, it fluctuates. In fact, it might fluctuate after you are already inside! I'm embarrassed to say that I fell for the ole bait and hook trick. Very nice surprise to find 12 dollar cover charges added to my bill at the end of the night. When I politely questioned the charge the waitress turned from sweet and on the spot to Margot Kidder. The waitress put us (two persons) seated in a table of two chairs but she sit other couples in a set of two tables (four chairs) where they could place their bags & coats on the chair..not on the floor! When I asked for the same service as other customers got in table seating, she said she anticipated for groups coming..but no reservation sign on table! Greedy for tips?? At the end, I spoke regarding the table seating with other waiter and manager, and finally they gave better seating. The shitty thing was that greedy server still served us..aka got tips from us!.. My first time at Cafe Wha was a BLAST! The house band is, as others note, terrific. The staff is extremely friendly, including the bouncer, with whom I had a talk about rude people who don't throw their butts in an ashtray *even* when one is provided. The band was racially diverse: 3 black musicians, 2 white and 1 hispanic. The covers ranged from Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" to Alicia Keyes (I forget the song but it's one of her more popular ones) to Beatles' "Blackbird." There might have been a few original songs or perhaps I just didn't recognize them (which doesn't mean anything of course as I don't keep up on contemporary rock like a reader of Spin Magazine). And it was really fun to hear a live band which I never do in LA, where I see no live music, or in NYC where I see almost exclusively Cabaret (Broadway music at 54 Below, Metropolitan Room: we have no cabaret to speak of in LA and I'm a nut for musical theater). Cafe Wha is on the stretch of MacDougal with the legendary Players Theater and Caroline's Comedy Club. I've actually never been to Caroline's though I go to comedy quite bit in LA and NYC both (Improv at Hollywood and Gotham Comedy Club, respectively) but I've always meant to go. Gotham is convenient and much nicer inside to see the pictures, plus the Village isn't really convenient so whenever I go to comedy in the city, I always go to Gotham. I chatted with the band a bit after the show and one girl, about 25, was dancing in the aisle (which is allowed but hard on the staff who have to navigate their way around the few dancers with a tray of cocktails). She was clearly a professional salsa dancer or someone who goes dancing a lot and had a perfect, toned, slender body. She was dancing with a man twice her age, very fit but more salt than pepper hair, and he acquitted himself very well with this hot little dancer. They were cute and right in front of us (we sat at one of the upper booths). I will absolutely be back to Cafe Wha which is easier to get to from the Upper East Side than Waverly and that part of the Village which is just way too confusing not to reach via cab. The drinks looked fine but having had good wine at dinner, I wasn't in the mood for cheap wine and I had had a Makers already so I just ordered a Frangelico. This is not something the ordinarily serve except in a big fattening specialty drink but they accommodated me (it was terrible). Great energy, vibe, and music. I can't wait to go back. P.S. I saw the bill. For four drinks it was 46 and I don't know if that included the music fee but my God, people are so goddamn cheap. These are talented lifelong musicians who play drums, keyboard, base and sing and they have to EAT and pay rent in NYC (or a suburb). WHA WHA WHAAAAAAA! One of the few places I could be considered a regular at. If you love liveband then come check out cafe wha! I love tuesdays open mic because you usually get awed at some of the local talent. Very exciting vibe, staff is friendly. Be aware the cell phone coverage is slim to none because it's a basement. There's no wifi provided (CAFE WHA PLEASE CHANGE THAT!) Drink prices are doable they're not cheap but not the most priciest I've seen. Food is decent here! read more

The live music was great, the singers were talented, the band was plain awesome, but other than that, everything was horrible. We ordered soda and chips & salsa (since we just ate and they required us to order min 2 drinks or 1 drink and a dish). I kid you not when I say the soda was watered down and chips & salsa was bland and old, it was like eating a snow dipped cardboard...oh, wait, snow is waay to delicious to describe what the salsa we had last night. My friend said to me in disbelief, "how can you mess up chips and salsa", but they did, they really messed it up. Our server was really slow plus it doesn't hurt to be polite, but nah, he would rather speak to us in a robot kind of tone. Oh, get this, they also calculate the tip for you, how convenient.
