Unfortunately one of the Mexican restaurants in the area has closed down, and the most popular one was inexplicably not open (as least so said DoorDash), so I tried this one. Actually I visited this unassuming little place (think food truck fused into a building with a handful of equally unassuming indoor seating options) and the food wasn't bad, so I figured I'd try it today. It certainly beats Taco Bell! Actually it was pretty good. It was more of a 3.5 but until we can give 1/2 stars I rounded up to a 4 in honor of Cinco de Mayo! My favorite dish was the chicken tostada, followed surprisingly by the fish burrito. The chips were pretty nice. The "hot" sauce/salsa was disappointing because it was anything but hot - in fact more sweet than hot. I had a variety four pack of tacos but was a bit disappointed they were on soft tortilla shells when I hoped for hard shells. If there was an option it wasn't readily discernible. Lastly, the empanadas were solid but nothing special. This place is near Dickinson College and serves a vital role of food variety for the area. It's not special but it certainly is not a place to avoid. In fact, if you are in the area and craving Mexican, give it a try. It's more hit than miss and will leave you satisfied overall.

My goal: secure enough funds for a chorizo burrito and street corn in a cup. I found a $20 bill and decided to live dangerously. Plot twist #1: they were out of rice. Brief emotional damage. Apparently rice is a key player in many menu items, but I pivoted like a seasoned professional because when tacos call, you answer. Plot twist #2: my total came to $20.14. FOURTEEN CENTS OVER. I braced myself for the walk of shame, but the guy at the counter waved it off like the legend he is. Sir, if you're reading this, I hope your pillow is always cool and your tacos are always perfect. Also elite-level move: at freezing temperatures, he told me to wait in my car and he'd holler when my food was ready. That's customer service with survival instincts. Let's set expectations: there is no inside here. None. Zero. This is an open-air taco shack. If the weather isn't nice, you're eating elsewhere... or embracing your inner feral raccoon and demolishing tacos in your car. Now for the important part -- THE FOOD. Street Corn (mild -- because I specifically requested "no spicy chaos"): Creamy. Tangy. Fully sauced. Not bland, not overpowering -- just perfectly balanced. Also served in a cup instead of on the cob, which means maximum efficiency and zero mess - WINNING! Chorizo Burrito: Absolute unit. Packed with just-the-right-level-of-spice chorizo, huge portion size, and -- surprise MVP moment -- the tortilla was lightly crisped instead of being a sad floppy wrap straight out of a bag. Half of this thing could feed a small village. I finished every bite of the meat like it was my job. Bonus green sauce situation included (avocado? wizardry?) that I fully expected to melt my face off -- but instead it was mellow and delicious and paired perfectly with the chorizo. Final verdict: Little Mexico Tacos is the real deal. No-frills setup, big flavors, generous portions, kind humans, and the exact kind of taco shack energy that makes you feel like you've unlocked a local secret. I will absolutely be back when the weather warms up so I can sit outside like a civilized human instead of a burrito-powered winter gremlin.

The staff were friendly and kind and did their best to stay attentive as the restaurant got busier. All-in, after tip, we spent around $70 for a Friday night date night. That felt a little high for what we ordered, but the extra tacos did give us leftovers, so that helped soften the blow. Bottom line: this is a solid Mexican restaurant. Would I go out of my way to eat here? No. If I was in the area and craving Mexican food, would I come back? Sure. Nothing to shout from the rooftops about, but also nothing to complain about -- average, fine, and perfectly serviceable. Bonus points for plentiful free parking, since it's located in a strip mall.

As I was trying to think of somewhere that might have both, the Squeaky Rail Diner popped into my head. I wondered if they still had the legendary dessert case I remembered all those years ago. Spoiler alert...they do! The moment I walked through the door, several staff members greeted me and offered to help. The dessert case was absolutely loaded with pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cannolis and just about every other sweet treat you could imagine. For this visit, I was only stopping in for takeout dessert, so this review is based solely on that experience rather than the diner's full menu. After a few minutes of what can only be described as an internal dessert debate, I settled on three slices to take home: peanut butter cream pie, classic cheesecake and Cinnabon cheesecake. The Cinnabon cheesecake practically jumped into the box on its own! The desserts were packaged quickly, checkout was easy and about $22 later, I was headed out the door with Friday night dessert secured. Later that evening, the official taste testing began. The peanut butter cream pie was good. Not life-changing. Not disappointing. Just a solid, acceptable slice of peanut butter pie. The classic cheesecake, unfortunately, was my least favorite of the three. It was noticeably dry, almost as if it had been sitting in the case a little longer than ideal. It certainly wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't one I'd order again. Then...we opened the Cinnabon cheesecake. Game over! Cinnamon roll on the bottom. Cheesecake in the middle. Another cinnamon roll on top. Whoever came up with that idea deserves a raise! It was rich, creamy, perfectly balanced and easily the standout dessert of the night. If someone told me they were making a special trip to Squeaky Rail Diner just for that cheesecake, I wouldn't question it for a second! Would I make another special trip for the entire dessert case? Probably not. Would I happily make another trip for that Cinnabon cheesecake? Absolutely! Sometimes all it takes is one exceptional dessert to earn a return visit.

About 15 minutes later, we walked through the doors...into absolute chaos. The lobby was PACKED with people waiting for tables despite the fact that roughly half the dining room appeared to be sitting empty. I squeezed my way through the crowd, made it to the hostess stand, gave her my name and mentioned that I'd already checked in online. "Great," she said. "It'll be 20 to 25 minutes." Wait...what? So the online check-in that said we'd be waiting 10 to 20 minutes...didn't actually accomplish anything? If I'd known we'd still be waiting another half hour after arriving, we honestly would have chosen somewhere else that accepted reservations or true call-ahead seating. The online check-in created expectations that simply weren't met. About 20 minutes later, we were finally seated. Unfortunately, things didn't improve. We sat for another 15 minutes before our waitress stopped by to take drink orders. We decided to order all of our food immediately because we weren't confident we'd see her again anytime soon. Good decision! The coffee arrived fairly quickly. The water...tap water, not fancy water, not bottled water, not water that required any preparation other than being put into a glass bottle and carried to the table, showed up about 10 minutes later. Here's what we ordered: Million Dollar Bacon ($6.29) - four slices of hardwood-smoked bacon glazed with brown sugar, black pepper, cayenne and syrup. This was absolutely phenomenal! If nothing else, order this (or learn to make it at home so you can avoid an excessive wait at First Watch to eat it). Sweet, smoky, just enough heat...this absolutely lived up to the hype! Power Wrap ($11.49) - egg whites, turkey, spinach, mushrooms and mozzarella in a sun-dried tomato basil tortilla with fresh fruit. The wrap itself was really good. The fruit was a mixed bag. The grapes were great, but the pineapple was still hard and noticeably underripe. At this point in the meal, I wasn't surprised and definitely wasn't going to try to get it fixed. Lemon Ricotta Pancakes ($13.29) - these were also really good. The lemon curd completely stole the show and made the pancakes. The menu advertised seasonal berries, which turned out to be strawberries. They were perfectly fine, though I probably would have expected blueberries this time of year. The Works Omelet (FREE BECAUSE THE ORDER WAS NOT CORRECT) - this was my stepdad's Father's Day breakfast. He ordered it WITHOUT onions. It arrived with EXTRA onions. By that point, our waitress had disappeared again, so rather than wait another 20 minutes for a remake, I flagged down another employee near the kitchen. I explained that we'd waited long enough already and simply wanted the omelet removed from the bill instead of remade. To their credit, they handled that professionally and removed it without any argument. While I had someone's attention, I also requested plates for the Million Dollar Bacon appetizer that had been sitting on our table for about 15 minutes and asked if my mom's meal could please be brought out since everyone else's food had already arrived quite a while earlier. Our final bill came to just over $44 after tax and tip. Even after everything that happened, I still left our waitress a 25% tip. It was Father's Day, the restaurant was clearly overwhelmed, and I try to assume people are doing the best they can with what they've got. That said...it was obvious something wasn't working. Whether they were understaffed, overwhelmed by the Father's Day crowd, or simply having an off day, the entire experience felt disorganized from beginning to end. The online check-in wasn't accurate, service was painfully slow, food came out at different times, one meal was prepared incorrectly, and our server disappeared for long stretches throughout the meal. Ironically, the food itself was actually pretty good. If I were reviewing only the Million Dollar Bacon, it would easily earn five stars. Unfortunately, restaurants are more than just food. For me, the overall experience matters just as much. There are simply too many excellent local breakfast and brunch spots to justify returning after an experience like this. I'm glad my stepdad's omelet was removed from the bill, and I appreciate that the staff made that right, but I left more frustrated than impressed. First Watch may have just had a really bad Father's Day. But based on my first experience, I don't think I'll be back to find out.

Legitimately as good as any dedicated burrito spot I've been to as it should be given its a Mexican owned and ran establishment. What I love about this place is that it feels real. It's not trying to be trendy or overly polished like a First Watch or something. It has character. It feels warm, handcrafted, and genuinely cared for. The staff feels super tight-knit, and you can tell there's a lot of pride and love behind the place. I love seeing a Mexican-owned and operated diner doing their thing so well, especially one that feels this rooted in the community. They've also been refurbishing parts of the establishment over time, and it just adds to that feeling that people are actively investing themselves into this place. I can't speak for every item on the menu because honestly I keep ordering the same things over and over. but everything I've had has been fantastic. If you want character over class, comfort over trendiness, and genuinely great food, Yankee Doodle provides it in spades. 5 out of 5.
