    Weekend brunch

Delightful to find our group of six here for brunch. Very accommodating to all our different dietary habits. Friendly staff, delicious food. Great beer selection.

An institution, Caffe Barney has been around forever, and my partner took me here partly for sentimental reasons, partly because the location was convenient, and they are just a solid go-to spot for his old high school crowd. It checked all of those boxes; the food wasn't the best in the world, but it was a fine brunch! THE WAIT: None on a Friday at noon. They had a few tables and never filled all of them throughout our meal. THE SERVICE: Our server came around often and was patient and nice. THE COST: $46.11 before tips for a coffee, 2 beers, and 2 entrees. THE FOOD: * Lonetree Dry Cider ($7.75) - 4 stars Good balance of tart and sweet. I can't usually finish a whole pint but I did get through this one during our meal! * BELTCH ($12) - 3 stars I went with something simple. This was light and what I needed. The fries were very dry. * Eggs Barney ($13) - 2.5 stars This was alright. The salmon was dry, as were the potatoes.

Breakfast burrito made vegan by swapping out eggs for scramble tofu and omitting the cheese

I've typically thought of this place as one of our neighbourhood bars that has fairly pedestrian local craft beers on tap -- nothing all that interesting for beer geeks like me, but a decent spot nevertheless. My wife and I decided to try them out for brunch, as I'd seen they can adapt some dishes to be vegan. Indeed they can. My wife ordered the breakfast burrito ($14 plus tax) and made it vegan by switching the eggs for tofu scramble and omitting the cheese. I got the huevos rancheros ($14) with similar substitutions. Both were tasty, though not all that interesting flavour-wise. Big portions and very hearty. The bottomless drip coffee was solid too. Very friendly, astute service. Decent brunch spot.

I love this place! This is my second time in one week and I don't even live nearby. The service is pretty laid back and chill, but more attentive than your standard Main Street "we're too cool to serve you" vibes (they're great!). Their drinks are delicious, last week I had a mimosa that came in a rocks glass with ice which threw me off but it was still really good. This time I had a Caesar and omg it was so good(pictured), so much flavour and a pickled beet which is a nice touch. For food I had the radtastic benny, a great vegetarian option and a refreshing take on a Benny. My friend had the huevos rancheros and loved it. I definitely recommend this place if you don't care about marble countertops and just want good grub. I'll be back for sure!

Friendly neighborhood cafe on Main Street. It was so busy at noon on Sun. We didn't bother to wait for table and got seated at the bar right the way. Brunch at Barney was ok. My tradition ham egg benny was good but nothing special. My husband had corn beef hash was delicious but a bit oily. It was fair to pay $10 for brunch.

Watered down iced tea, quite bland. Never came around to ask if we wanted to order another.

Can't really give them more chances, while the food is relatively decent, the service needs improvement. My family of arrived around 5:50pm and was greeted by the fellow behind the bar. He was quite friendly and pointed a place to seated. I had noticed they only have 1 waitress, she was chatting busy staring at her phone and drinking water. I went to wash my hands and spent some time looking around. By this time it's around 6:00, still no waitress, water or menu. Just my family and I sitting at a dirty table. I then saw the waitress was still leaning at the back counter by the bar, she proceeded to drink gulp of water and disappeared to the back. Now it's 6:05, she reappears and heads right back to the counter and assumes the leaning position. At this, I am annoyed and went to the front door and grabbed my own menu. She, the waitress noticed my actions and finally decided to stop leaning on the counter and messing with her phone and brought menus, with no water, nor did she bother offering any. Oddly enough, the other 5 tables did have water, but since the tables were present before we showed up, I do not know whether water was offered or ordered. One would assume on a hot day like today, ice water would be a no brainer. I proceeded to order our food, the waitress was fine with that. However, when she returned with the utensils, instead of wiping off the debris, she placed the napkins and cutlery over top of the fairly visible pieces white bread crumbs that were scattered on top of the dark wood table. Mind you, the meals arrived quickly, and was tasty. I can applaud the cook, but the service is absolutely sub par.

    Caffe Barney's patio

I was passing by late in the afternoon, and noticed that the patio was free so I tried it out. I thought I came at a good time because in the evening's I bet you wouldn't get the freedom to choose where to sit, let alone the patio on a warm day. We got a newer waitress (who admitted it was her first shift) but everything went really smoothly, she came by a lot and was very friendly. The menu is neat. The prices were fair. I was definitely indecisive as to what to order but I settled on the Mac n Cheese, by far the best (and creamiest!) I've ever had. It seemed small in proportion but it really filled me up. My friend tried the nachos, one of the more inexpensive things on the menu. Turns out, the proportion was huge. We shared our plates, and discovered that the chips tasted good dipped in my mac n cheese. I can't say much for the Granville location, but I really enjoyed my early dinner people-watching on Main Street.

I've underestimated the value of Cafe Barney! I hadn't realized it was so very cute and classy inside, having passed by the patio so many times and thinking it's just another burger and beer type place. Noooo! Cozy on up to the bar and try this new drink called "Sweet Cheeks" It's like a mini vacation in a glass! A Mojito-styled drink with crushed strawberries and basil. I'd describe it as much fun as a happy face balloon :) go on, try it!

Food: 3/5 Service: 2/5 Ambiance: 4/5 Came here on a weeknight for a quick drink and bite to eat. I had a stout (forgot the name) listed on the daily beer selections chalkboard behind the bar. Paired it with a pulled pork poutine ($12). Nothing extraordinary and the poutine portion was fair for the price tag. I happened to be in the neighbourhood but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here again. They have 4-5 patio seats.

I came here on BC Day to have brunch with some old friends after we discovered Locus down the street was closed (their website holiday hours lie!!). It was a nice day and my friend was dog sitting, so we chose Caffe Barney because it had a little outdoor patio where we could sit outside with the dog. As it was a holiday in the morning, the restaurant wasn't busy at all. I ordered the Eggs Barney, as eggs benedict is my brunch staple and I love me a smoked salmon benny. I was a bit surprised when the plate came out and the smoked salmon was not the cured salmon like I normally expected, but was fully cooked (albeit with a smokey flavour) salmon. A bit disappointing, but oh well. It tasted fine, but knowing that it's cooked smoked salmon, I probably wouldn't order it next time. No other complaints about the place; the cubed potato hash that came with the eggs benny was nice and golden. Our server was friendly, no complaints. That being said, I wouldn't be in a rush to come back for brunch.

It's my hangover's wet dream! Super yummy Benny's with the best Hollandaise sauce in Vancouver! It has just a hint of citrus in it, and it tastes so buttery and delicious! I usually order a side of Hollandaise to have with my hasbrowns! So how is it that I don't weigh 500 pounds?? Most of the breakfast items are around $10, and all of them are yummo, but super filling so make sure your pants have an elastic waistband or you are wearing a muumuu. They have Cesars on special on Sundays, as well as Sangria, but I usually opt for the Cesar since my head is already pounding and the sugary Sangria will probably make me lose my breakfast at the table, and some patrons may find that unappetizing. This place is usually rocking on weekends, luckily I show up around 2pm when I can finally drag my ass out of bed and rock the big hair, big shades, and big hangover. I was pleasantly surprised by the music selection they play when we are here, because I usually like it! When I wake up after breakfast and look around I am always surprised by the boring late-thirty-somethings around me that frequent this place, I guess the high tables and bar stools attract a more mature crowd. Its a good thing my posse is there to stir things up and make the waitresses enjoy their job.

The udon in both the curry and rose cream udon was very soft and tender as well, tender than what I usually have for udon. If you like your noodles al dante I don't think it'll quite fit your taste but I personally really enjoyed it! As for the taste the spicy rose cream udon tasted exactly like Buldak Ramen's Carbonara flavor, and everyone at my table agreed. The garlic bread was nice tho. To be completely honest staff and workers aren't very attentive, the restaurant wasn't full and I could see the workers standing around. Our table had to ask for water multiple times. The raw fish options seem to be limited to salmon and tuna. which is fine, despite this, all the rolls we got were pretty delicious and well thought out. Super close to the hockey arena, so lots of folks seem to stop by before the game. All in all, it was pretty good. I made reservations about 4 months in advance. Upon arrival, one of the hostesses opened the door for us, and asked us to wait in a very ornate waiting area. We only waited a couple of minutes before another hostess seated us at the main seating area. The space is very dark, and only lit with candles while the rest of the diners trickled in. During that time they take drink orders, which is limited to sake, wine, beer and a few non-alcoholic drinks. Of note, they don't provide a drink menu, so we were a little surprised by the cost - the yuzu sake and the plum wine were $30 each. My non-alcoholic drink was $12, but a fair size. The theatrical portion started a few minutes later than the official start time - closer to 6pm. The shades lifted, the lights turned on, and the chefs introduced themselves. And from that moment on, they immediately went to work preparing our meal. They operate like clockwork to show the ingredients whole to the diners, and then preparing them, and serving them. Soon as the one dish was completed by all the diners, the next round came shortly after. Over 20+ dishes, there was very little wait time in between each. Each time a dish was served, a hostess was there to describe the dish and provided tips on how best to eat it. The food was overall was very good. I thought a few items were very average, most of them were very good, and a select few were truly outstanding. Most of the ingredients are imported from Japan, so I would imagine that it's part of the reason it's so expensive. This is definitely a splurge meal. I think half the diners at our sitting was celebrating a birthday. On the most part, the food is very good, watching the chefs at work is part of the entertainment, and the service is excellent. It's not some place I could afford to go to often, but glad to do it at least this one time.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

Maybe I'm spoiled from years of uni nigiri from Sushi Bar Kilala (iykyk), but I was disappointed that the uni at Takenaka was small and often a background note rather than the star. Uni Colada cocktail: white rum, fino, montenegro, coconut, uni mango foam, chili - refreshing, tropical drink with a smooth foam top. It's a pricey cocktail because there's uni, but you don't taste much of it. The mango and chili are stronger. It's a nice drink, but not $17 nice. Uni and Beef Yuk-hoe: seared beef, green onion, quail egg, garlic chips, stem wasabi, uni, seaweed - delicious! However, I felt like the uni may as well not have been there. I had a piece on its own and it had a lovely buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture. However, it was quite mellow (uni usually pops with briny, umami notes). Then I had the other piece with everything else and it got overshadowed by the beef. Uni California DIY hand roll: crab meat, uni sauce, roll-it-yourself seaweed wrap - it's smart to make this a DIY experience because the seaweed remains crisp. The mini soy sauce syringes on the side are cute too. I don't like using a lot of soy with my sushi, so it was great to control the amount. There didn't appear to be any uni sauce inside the hand roll...maybe it was used to marinate components? Even then, the flavours that come through are the sweetness of the crab and salty pop of fish roe (tobiko, I think). Truffle Egg DIY hand roll: truffle flavoured egg omelette, roll-it-yourself seaweed wrap - it's like all the luxury ingredients they highlight on their menu are less prevalent. The egg omelette was tasty, but I would never guess there was truffle incorporated. I want to reiterate that all the food was good and I enjoyed it! I just don't feel like I can rate higher when the uni didn't shine.
