Came here with a group of friends, it's small but the staff were amazing. The pastries were delicious and the atmosphere felt so cozy. Rude and discriminative owner. I am deeply disappointed with my last visit to Cittadella. I am a university student, and me and two friends came to the café early on a Monday morning when it was very quiet to study. We ordered coffees when we first got there, and about an hour and a half later we ordered meals for breakfast. We WERE customers at this establishment, yet were treated by the owner with nothing but disrespect. She made her way over to us as we quietly worked and hovered over us, then began to challenge us, saying we weren't paying customers despite me, as well as the staff working telling her we were. She then began to give us trouble about the table we had chosen being in the middle,, and basically kicked us out. She made us feel like she would rather have no customers than have us. She rudely asked us questions aout ehy we were there despite our clear status as students working, AND the only customers at the time apart from one individual man. She said there was no space for other customers, when no one weas even there. My friends and i were very upset and disheartened by this interaction because we had been stressed and feeling very happy at the café previous to this rude interaction. I feel like my favorite cafe is now ruined because the owner couldn't handle students working despite us doing nothing wrong (all on a quiet monday morning by the way). Small little cafe tucked away in a quiet neighborhood serving mostly the locals in the area. There is a small dining room area inside and a few tables outside. The atmosphere is very inviting. Great for singles and couples, not so much for big groups. This is the place to go to have a leisurely breakfast and coffee with a good book to read and no one will rush you out the door. The menu has a variety of breakfast items from ham and cheese croissant to an egg sandwich. There is a small selection of vegetarian items such as the wrap or the veggie frittata. There is also a variety of snack items from muffins, scones, and banana loafs as well as a selection of coffees to choose from. The two downsides are the street parking as well as the menu items are on the pricier side. However, this is still a nice place to stop once in awhile if your in the neighborhood. read more

I was drawn in by the heritage building that the cafe is "housed" in. In terms of atmosphere, it definitely offers something a little different than other coffee shops in the city. The inside is intimate and cozy (if a bit cramped) with seating on two floors, and they have multiple patio areas outside. They had live music inside while I was there! Ordering was a little confusing because there doesn't seem to be a single menu with all the food selections, but rather cards with individual items arranged somewhat haphazardly in the area around the counter. I went with a rooibos tea latte, egg salad sandwich, and black bean oatmeal brownie. They just used President's Choice tea for the latte, which was a little disappointing since I can be a little bit of a tea snob, but in a latte, generic brand tea is really fine, and this was nothing fancy but still a decent latte. The sandwich salad was underwhelming. The egg salad itself was actually pretty good, but the menu picture showed it with lettuce (and I think tomato, but not totally sure) and there was no lettuce - just egg salad. It was just served on plain white bread, not toasted. The black bean brownie was actually fantastic - it was served warm with chocolate sauce on top and was gooey almost like a lava cake in the middle. The wait time was longer than I would have expected given the basic quality of the food. Even though there was a larger group that ordered ahead of me, I had to wait 10 minutes for a cold sandwich and brownie that came out of a fridge or freezer and was almost definitely microwaved (this is not inherently bad since it tasted great, but it does not take long to microwave a brownie), and the latte wasn't ready until about 5 minutes after the food. With the exception of the brownie, you can get much better food at other cafes in the area at the same price, and much faster. read more

3 friends, out for a birthday breakfast, so disappointing. I had the breakfast pita sandwich which said it had egg, turkey, cheddar, arugula, tomato, mayo. It had a little egg and I think I saw a miniscule piece of turkey. Definitely no cheddar or arugula or tomato. Definitely did not look like the picture on the menu. The other 2 gals had the egg frittata quiche, both said it was dry and absolutely tasteless. The coffee was so bitter one friend just left it, the other topped it up over and over with cream and then gave up. We should have sent it all back but it sort of spoils the "feel" of the event. We will not be returning. The service was good and it is a charming place. But the food component is a BIG item when you are dining out. read more

I had the displeasure of visiting Caffe Citadella this morning. The staff were rude from the get-go. It's the kind of place where you have to "try" to spend money because they don't seem at all interested in serving you. We ordered a latte, chai latte and two tuna melts. The staff tried to put us off ordering food by telling us it would take ten minutes, despite the place being empty during Sunday brunch in Van (should have seen this red flag right away). When the food did come out it was inedible. I ate half of my sandwich to find out if it tasted as bad as it looked but I regret it because I promptly puked it up as soon as I got home! Absolutely terrible. Cute on the outside, ugly on the inside. Such a shame for this beautiful heritage building. read more

The ham & cheese croissant was pale and soggy as if it had been heated up in a microwave. They served it with cheap store bought salsa and Lay's potato chips. This quaint little cafe reminds me of all the lovely coffee shops and salons du the back home in my native Montreal. It's really a cozy Victorian-esque house with a beautiful little garden patio out back, with a few bistro tables and benches on which to enjoy one's teas and coffees and pastries. It truly feels like a garden oasis here, and it makes you feel miles away from the relative griminess of commercial Broadway and all its nondescript storefronts. My friend and I met here for lunch the other day and I really felt homesick for Montreal, this place was so reminiscent of some of my old hang-outs. The guys behind the counter here were very pleasant and the barista made me a fabulous cafe au lait, complete with leaf coffee art on top.So pretty. And did I mention how delicious it was? Truly delicious. I was a little disappointed that they did't offer any salads here, but they did serve small sandwiches and frittatas (my friend had a frittata and said it was wonderful!), and lots of delectable looking pastries. They also have a large decanter of complimentary ice water infused with fruits (great on a hot day!). What a lovely little coffee shop here! My only suggestion (other than perhaps offering salads) would be to place some bee/wasp deterrents/traps in the bushes in the back garden by the patio, as we had quite a few wasps hovering by our table and frittata plate, wanting to join the party (!). read more

Caffee Cittadella switched management a few months ago and it's been downhill ever since. I'm sad to say that my long-time favourite cafe has lost everything that was good about it. I've given it 3 tries since the business was sold, and all experiences were unpleasant. The new staff is an, ever rotating, cast of grumpy characters. They no longer know how to make a proper cortado. The beans taste burnt. Perhaps no longer 49th Parallel? The food is over-priced and not particularly good. Sorry, but everyone reading the 5-star reviews before 2018 should re-think this place. read more

I've wasted a LOT of time in cafes and I have to say that this might be my favourite cafe ever. Like- in life. And I mean it- I've done my time loitering globally to find great spaces to drink espresso and read a book and this might just be the best place I've ever found. This is the kind of place I'd keep as my little secret but it's such a genuine place that I'm actually EXCITED FOR the owners and the space. Set up in a heritage home they have a great first floor with a few seats and bar. The garden patio is nice- LOTS of seating and the kind of place I imagine [ideally] getting packed on a summer day with people lounging on the stairs when the seats fill up. Garden seating is SPOT ON. Cept for the ants you'll get in your pants. meh..i'll deal with it. Great setup- abso-f'ing-lutely love it! Took some time to loiter upstairs with a book and hey- did you know it's BEAUTIFUL up there? Even has a deck with a couple chairs and a table for a romantic lookout. Beyond the space, the espresso is fantastic. A good sweet espresso made with care. Likely top 10, and will probably would narrow into my top five if sam james (award winning toronto barista) didn't take up so many of those spots. The case has exactly the right amount of fresh baked goods that willl eventually tempt me to try every single one of them. And yes, If i come here more often I do believe a panini will be necessary for my tummy. These guys are lucky I don't live in Vancouver anymore or else I'd seriously live here. Obviously doesn't have the feel of a corporate, stoic Starbucks and depending on the time of day, it's quite busy so after lunch upstairs, I can get some work done in between meetings. I love how this little house on the corner has turned into a full blown coffee house. Character is what you feel, not just see when you come here, you probably wonder what is this place, and when you enter it is as charming a place as can be, rain or shine. I worked in this area about 10 years ago, and just looking now at all the new buildings that have raised around the area, this place is quant, cute, something out of a scene form the Disney Pixar movie 'Up' as to what is around the area, then you get this little house that is not a home, but serves the brew. You have two floors and also outside seating. The coffee is good here (taste and size for what you get), and the treats do the job. Trying to get away from the hip, urban type coffee shop, or the big box ones, come down here, and spend some time enjoying what Citadella has to offer. If your lucky you will also find a parking spot on 7th as well, as there are no meters, just 2 hour time limits! read more

What a quaint cafe on Ash and 7th. Lovely patio to sit outside watching traffic on the four way stop just outside (or looking at my parked car). The procing is great I think. I was blown away with the cup size (ceramic) the smallest size looks like medium for another place - yes, they use 49th Parallel beans, and the latte was pretty good as there was only a faint taste of burnt-ness but overall a rounded, balanced cup. The array of goodies looks delectable and despite the fact that I already had a danish and two muffins during the day, i grabbed (not literally) a dried apricot biscotti. I love dried fruits so it was great. Overall, it is a lovely place to relax and I would definitely come back. read more

This place deserves 5 stars by far! Not only does this awesome coffee shop/cafe have fantastic coffee (49th parallel), they also are in a good location (just off of broadway near Cambie station)! Citadella is located inside an old heritage house... When I first drove by I didn't think of going in, but today we decided to park the car out front (pay parking) and mosey on in! When we got inside the place was a bustling cafe, filled with cute tables all around, and a deck out back with cute patio chairs and tables. I was curious to see if the upstairs was also a part of the cafe and walked up the stairs... And to my surprise, the upstairs was busier than downstairs! This is the coolest little (big) coffee shop in South Cambie! So I ordered a cappuccino and was a little bummed out when I saw that they didn't have any chocolate croissants to accompany my coffee... So I asked the man at the til if they had chocolate croissants and he said he can "make it for me"! How awesome did that sound??? Well I said "sure! That's amazing!" Then I paid, walked upstairs, grabbing a glass of water from the water station on my way up. I sat next to the window, admiring the simple touch of the pretty white flower in the tiny vase on the table. Moments later, the man that was at the til, had brought me up my cappuccino (complete with a dark mini chocolate!) and my delicious looking chocolate drizzled warm croissant. Needless to say, the specially made chocolate croissant was very tasty and disappeared in minutes (seconds)! The only thing that was lukewarm was the temperature of my cappuccino once I got halfway in drinking it.... So next time I just might ask for extra hot. I got a tuna ciabiatta, mushroom soup and a caramel latte. Both the soup and sandwich was fresh and tasty but the star was my soy caramel latte. Perfect balance of sweetness and coffee goodness. It looks like an old house in my hometown of London, but somehow cuter! I ordered a small latte, but I'm not sure whether it was the deep cup, but it somehow felt much bigger. Excellent! Nice, not too strong, and not lukewarm like so many places do it. I totally forgot about this coffee shop! I work on willow and broadway and usually go to either Starbucks or Elysian for my java fix. Not anymore! This cafe is a heritage home close to broadway and Cambie. It's a nice, bright sweet place with lots of seating. Also a cute little patio area for the warmer months. It is also one of the only coffee places I've found that makes Spanish lattes! They are a treat, and this one was delicious. Nice and creamy and sweet. I also decided to try one of their cashew butter pumpkin pecan darlings ( that's a mouthful! ) I wasn't excited about it when I bought it, but I thought it was a healthier choice than a chocolate croissant. Now I will be back just to get one! It was soooo yummy! Made with dates for the sweetness and just enough pumpkin spice that it feels a little like pumpkin pie. What a lovely heritage house! I was drawn to it for that reason alone. I ordered a cup of coffee and a peanut butter cookie. The coffee was decent but the cookie was bland and a sort of bad chewy like it had too much flour and was kneeded too long. I like the upstairs but too bad the tables are just slapped in rows without any attention to decor/ambiance. It would be a great place if they added a few extras. It's been a while since the last time when I came here. I know they changed the ownership a couple times in last few years and since then somehow I stopped coming back. It used to be a great little neighborhood coffee shop. Well, the result of my most recent visit was very disappointing unfortunately . I can see they don't take care of the place well anymore . Mouses are running around in and outside of Coffee shop which was a huge red flag. I saw them at least 15+ while my visit . I didn't see the staff never picked up dirty dishes and cups until the closing .They were on the tables forever...at least three hours as I noticed. There were also dirty dishes sitting at the cashier counter in front of me when I ordered. They didn't care to clean them up. I had a hard time communicating with a staff and placing an order. I am not sure if it was a language barrier or he basically didn't listen nor didn't know about their menu. He gave us wrong food/didn't give us "25% off " happy hour deals as it had signed outside of the shop . He also had an attitude toward us and it made me and my friend very unpleasant and uncomfortable. Inside was very dark as all blinds at the kitchen was closed and the digital screen menus was turned off.. Saw spider webs were hanging between the bottles which were placed at top of showing glass... It was an obvious change the place has been turning into somewhere else ...
