What a lovely heritage house! I was drawn to it for that reason alone. I ordered a cup of coffee and a peanut butter cookie. The coffee was decent but the cookie was bland and a sort of bad chewy like it had too much flour and was kneeded too long. I like the upstairs but too bad the tables are just slapped in rows without any attention to decor/ambiance. It would be a great place if they added a few extras. i came here before but only ordered the rice bar (which was great) so this time i ordered a chai latte and the lavender cashew cluster. the service was quick and awesome! the chai latte was warm and delightful. it hits the sweet and spicy notes very well. the chocolate was a fun bonus! (most drinks come with the small swiss chocolates!!) the cluster was nice; its got a nice crunchy yet smooth texture and i like how its sweet and salty. overall, the ambience is great, the service is great, i really recommend this place!! read more

An exciting addition to the west-side Vancouver coffee scene. Visit at once! Caffè Cittadella is a brand new shop (opened mid-August) in a carefully renovated heritage building in the Mount Pleasant side of Fairview. Cittadella has two bright, airy floors of seating and an expansive, greenery-lined patio. For now, they're exclusively serving 49th Parallel -- the owner chatted me up a bit and told me he's friends with their founder, and that he was a GM for Artigiano before he decided to open up his own shop. Their espresso machine is apparently the only one of its make in Vancouver -- I didn't catch exactly which that was, but I enjoyed the competent caffè macchiato he made for me, served with a small gratis biscotti. I was caffeinated-out for the day (I was walking back to SkyTrain from Elysian when I found Cittadella...) and it was closing time so I didn't have a chance to delve deeper, but I look forward to sampling the rest of their menu! Cittadella also offers an expansive arrays of cookies, pastries, and sandwiches. The owner said he was hoping for licensure soon, with an eye towards serving Tuscan wines and coffee with spirits, but for now, milk is the hardest beverage you'll find on offer. If I had any complaints, it'd be that the very careful decor is almost too magazine-y -- a picture of some guy who looks like Ernest Hemingway on the wall, everything in the food display case has a small, logoed, laser-printed label, etc. It's immaculate and safe but about 0% edgy. Comfortable, though. As of this writing, Cittadella is open until 7pm weekdays, 6pm Saturday, and 5pm Sunday. Bring a book and stop by for a while! read more

Dude. Could this place be any cuter? A charming character home-turned coffee shop. The coffee is beautiful: 49th Parallel beans and latte art. The space just oozes 'we know coffee'. Big fan of that. Upstairs (yes, two levels) is a lovely hidden floor. Okay, perhaps not hidden, but it was empty of guests when I was there. I could have read and drank up there all day. Or danced around in my underwear. I wouldn't, but you know, sometimes it's nice to know that it could be an option. Points for that : ) . If you're looking for an inspiring and quiet space to have your java, Cittadella is a great option! It's not hipster like the uber modern Innocent Coffee (my all-time fave) but it's a classy-cozy version that I love just the same. read more

There's so much I love about this place - the location, the building, the treats offered and the coffee... BUT all of that is soured when you have bad customer service. I'm not sure if he was the owner, and I only guess that he could have been the owner to have the audacity to act so snotty and rude (and because if an employee acted like he did, I'm sure he'd be fired), but the gentleman at the till was unbelievably rude and shot with customers. I watched as he took orders and served people, impatient as if they were interrupting his day, treating them as if they were idiots (the older gentleman in front of me wasn't familiar with the type of debit machine they used and the guy behind the till talked to him like he was a misbehaving child). I only write this in hopes that the owner of the cafe does read this and do something about the level of service that this person was giving. As someone who's done my time in customer service, I was shocked. He was older, probably over 60, white hair, and I think wearing glasses. If that was the owner, I highly doubt he'll be checking to see how the business is doing via Yelp reviews because he obviously is not concerned with the cafe's success. read more

I want to live in this house! Ok maybe not for real, but I kinda want to kick off my shoes, kick everyone out and turn up the stereo when I'm in here. I think this cafe sums up the word quaint. Even the cups lids are in a little cupboard above cream and sugar. The patio / garden is perfect on a nice day, and there's even an upstairs. My americano was good. 49th Parallel. I don't think it was amazing, but I'm going to give it another try. This one was a little weak, and slightly bitter. Nice selection of sandwiches, muffins, cookies, tiramisu, croissants and other organic cookies and treats. I had a peanut butter stuffed chocolate cookie that I'll be having again. read more

I'm lost for words about this place. It's a heritage house, converted into a cute coffee place. A simple, warm and homely place. There is even a balcony upstairs. Lots of seating, minimalistic decor. I'm glad this wasn't converted into tasteless condo build. The coffee (I meant latte) is great, and came with a little chocolate on the side. I had fruit and nuts scone, which was perfect, I wanted to just go back to the counter and get another one right away. The staff is great. I was waiting for the coffee after I ordered, and the gentleman there told me he could sit down and they will bring the coffee to the table. I decided to sit upstairs, and he came up himself. Then about 25 minutes, he came back again to check on me. That's rear for a cafe shop. He told the extra plate away so I could have more room. Stars plus plus. Thank you. read more

We do like this place. They have good coffee and good food, and we live right beside it. The only problem is the environment is always dampened by the grumpy owner. There have been times where we give him a coffee card fully stamped (to get a free coffee) and simply scoffs at us as though we are cheap... sorry for giving you guys a ton of business! It's a shame. Coffee: As beautiful as the heritage home it inhabits, yet, a bit too strong for my liking. Quite similar to JJ Bean if you're a fan. Was disappointed that I couldn't find anywhere to sit, tho, even alone, and the atmosphere was actually a bit sterile. But I sure looked longingly at the quaint, empty patio chairs that were covered in rain. The upstairs looked more inviting, yet full, and the downstairs did not seem conducive to enjoying the atmosphere. Maybe it would have been good if I'd brought a book? Must return in the summer for the patio, though. The chocolate cookie was too cakelike and just "meh", but I have high standards for my cookies! It just didn't taste that fresh. Seems like this place is best suited for a meet-up--that is, if you can get a seat. Annoying to have to pay for parking, but that's the 'hood for you. read more

Their cookies are not the best - too hard for my liking but the latte is wonderfully and the atmosphere is relaxing and staff are super friendly! Venturing in for the first time for this month's "Likemind," Caffe Cittadella played a gracious host. Grinding 49th Parallel roasts, offering bite size chocolates and handling the sizable crowd with ease and latte art, the staff here seem friendly (even during the early morning hours). The homey space invites you to come in and sit down, or wander upstairs. It has that neighbourhood haunt feel - reminding me of a brighter, roomier Arbutus Coffee http://www.yelp.ca/biz/arbutus-coffee-vancouver, with lots of parking and transit nearby. With lots of people it can really start to heat up inside, but a quick stand by the drafty door and you'll be chilled in no time! Expect an update from me soon. Awful muffins. What taste they have is lost in a dense sparsely chipped muffin. These muffins must be made off site then frozen then delivered then thawed. Coffee was fine. Second trip in two days was not better. I did t order any food. Just coffee. The guy behind the counter (Russian accent??) couldn't manager to lift his head up to serve me nor attempt a weak smile. Adorable cafe converted from a heritage house. Passed this place walking from my free parking spot (good amount of of 2 hr parking in the neighbourhood) to Cactus Club on Broadway and Ash, and couldn't resist checking it out. As soon as I walked in I knew I would come back after lunch to soak up some of the charm. And that's exactly what happened. It gets pretty crowded but I was lucky to find a seat downstairs and there was also seating upstairs. I recommend sitting upstairs if you want to avoid the coming and going of patrons at the counter downstairs. I didn't mind it myself, since I was just chatting with a friend anyway. I ordered a chamomile tea, which is bag tea (boo) but organic, high quality bag tea (yay), and it even comes with a pot of hot water and a tea cup, so you can steep it yourself. It also comes with a small chocolate (the kind available by the ginormous bagful from Costco, so that actually was sorta off putting but I did appreciate the intention and my friend actually ended up eating it so... I guess it wasn't all wrong). I also ordered two cookies, which, to be honest were good but not great. But again, I appreciated the intention, and would probably order them again. First the good: ingredients were very, very appealing: flour and sugar free cookie made with organic quinoa and unsweetened chocolate. Uh....sounds like my dream cookie! And I guess I had my hopes up too much after reading the ingredients. The other was a peanut butter filled chocolate chunk cookie, also made with all natural ingredients. And they were pretty big, which is great if you're sharing although I did wish they had smaller options on hand. The peanut butter cookie was tastier and also a bit softer. What could have been better: the cookies were not very fresh tasting. The quinoa one was so hard I couldn't even cut it with a fork or spoon. Ended up asking for a knife and was able to saw off a piece that way. The portions were too large for me and while I intended to eat just half of the quinoa cookie and take the other half to go, I got carried away...and regretted it later when I fell into a post-sweets cookie coma. Anyway, this is was a very pleasant cafe, worth a return if in the area. Total for two cookies and tea was $10 flat. Prices listed on the menu are all nice round numbers and include tax, which I imagine makes both the customer's and the cashier's life a little easier. But then again they do take credit cards so there you go! read more

What an amazing little find in the neighborhood! This little historic house turned coffee shop is a true gem (as many other reviews have already mentioned!) Put it this way, I've been here three days IN A ROW (coming on 4)... not due to geographic convenience either! Coffee: - Non-fat Latte, no sugar: 49th parallel beans. Excellent choice. Love it. My weekinday poison of choice is always the non fat latte. It was perfect, just the way I like it, not too hot or foamy with an added bonus of latte art on top. - Spanish latte: my weekend indulgence. Also very good, espresso and condensed milk, what could go wrong? Drank it to the last drop. Mind you, I had to ask for a half sweet and it was plenty sweet. Pastries : Day 1: hazelnut chocolate croissant - heavenly! It was flaky and light with nutella flavored goodness inside. Not to be missed. If I wasn't worried about the old waistline, I'd go for seconds!!!....and thirds...and this is the song that never ends.... Day 2: mushroom filo pastry - mushroom lovers! they do not skimp with the mushrooms in this savory delight. Its a must try! Also comes in both ham and also cheese flavors ...both of which are on my "to eat" list. Day 3: apple pastry - very buttery and rich crust ..kind of reminscent of those blue tin danish cookies! The apple filling was not overly sweet, just right. Not my fave because it was quite rich/heavy but I can see how it could be delicious if thats what you are craving! Service was both friendly and efficient. No angry customers here! Quaint little outdoor seating space, ground level seating and also overflow seating upstairs...but they are so busy during peak times that you might have to wait. read more

I really, really want to give this place 4 and a half stars...but I can't. Damn! Just pretend it's 4 1/2, okay? Ok! I adore this place. I really do. It reminds me of my beloved cafes back in my hometown of Halifax. See, back east we're blessed with an abundant amount of cheap, wonderful character/heritage properties. We've got several cafes which are similar to Cafe Cittadella. But it goes without saying that on the west coast, they're fewer and further between. The ONLY reason this place loses half a star for me is that the interior decor is just a wee bit on the magazine-ish side. I think it could be amazing if it was more on the shabby-chic-mismatched side of things. I guess, basically, I want it to appeal a bit more to my hipster tastes, if y'know what I'm saying. Anyway, The lovely Cafe Cittadella takes up 2 floors of a renovated heritage home, and has a massive patio, free wi-fi and a huge, wonderful selection of food. On my very first visit, I spent 4 hours in the little nook by the window, just enjoying my giant, delicious cafe mocha. The staff are lovely, too. On my 2nd visit, the barista said "hey, thanks for tweeting about us!". Adorable. I'll definitely be stopping into this place whenever I'm in the area from now on. read more

This coffee shop is as cozy as anyone's home. And lo and behold, it *is* a home! A heritage home to be precise. It's split over two levels, with a cozy area upstairs and a nice seat by a window if you're lucky to snag it. In the summertime, they have a beautiful patio so it really does feel like you're at someone's house and stepped out onto the porch. I've tried a variety of things: coffee, tea, snacks, and they're all very good and served with friendly service. I'm just not a huge fan of 49th Parallel beans (too bitter), otherwise I'd be here all the time! read more

I went walking through the neighborhood looking for coffee and relaxation before a BC Lions game, and found it in spades in this sweet converted house hidden in a quiet residential neighborhood. The patio is awesome, the interior is clean and cool, and the staff is super attentive and chill. The tables are laid out well to create an inviting, relaxing atmosphere, and they also have an upstairs seating area. Simple, elegant, but affordable. They also chip in a piece of dark chocolate with your drink. read more

Such a bright, cute cafe. Really lovely. The older man at the till was a little brutish and didn't seem to care. Possibly the owner? I'm not sure why else he'd be manning the till - he's clearly the worst person for the job compared to the friendly baristas. Either way, my cappuccino was perfectly normal (3/5) but the addition of the chocolate they serve with it brought it up to a 4/5. I'd come back. They have good wifi and it's a great place to work. Bring ear plugs or ear buds because it gets NOISY with crying babies and Kitsilano power-mommies out to lunch. read more

I don`t think people want lengthy reviews, they just want to know the important things ya. Anyway, so far for me, this is one of the only cafes with real and amazing food. Serving Vancouvers 49th parallel coffee, they also make all of their sandwiches, paninis and other not so common plates in house. And these are not your typical boring paninis, they`re made with legit bread and quality meats and cheeses. I heard about this place through an old To Dine For Vancouver article published, "Best Independent Coffee Shops in Vancouver" on-line. I decided to book mark this and make it part of my 100 coffee shops in 52 weeks challenge the next time I was in the area. The minute I walked it you notice how beautiful this place is. It's situated in an old home that has been renovated. This is the best looking place that I've been to. Very homely. It's small with an upstairs section, however, was just taken away with the concept that makes you feel as though you need to live there all day. It's only a two block walk from Broadway/City Central station on Ash & 8th ave, a short distance walk that gets overlooked, however, judging from the line ups to get in, this is not a city secret. Most people that were here were coffee fans and those who appreciate the concept. They were extremely busy, however, waited no more than 10 minutes for my London Fog. They didn't have all the specific ingredients to make the London Fog to my desired specifications (Weight Watchers), therefore, improved to the best of both our ability. I had a London Fog with almond milk and 1/2 shot almond agave syrup. Technically it is not a London Fog so I re-named it a "London Nutty Hipster." The Barista appreciated that. They carry one of the best beans in the city, 49 Parallel, therefore, they won my heart immediately. In combination to being situated in a restored almost heritage home off the beaten path you can buy local made jewelry. I saw a pair of studded faux leather neon pink bracelets that would go well with my hair and purse. Seeing as how I will be back for more hot drinks, I will get the bracelets. They also sell cold dress juice on tap. There are tons of pastries as well, mostly vegan and gluten free. My drink was served in a plain unmarked cup, therefore, before leaving I did decorate it (will post picture of this over the weekend). read more

Great spot to sit outside on a sunny afternoon. I ended up here on coffee date #136 of 2015 (why don't we come up with something more exciting to do on a first date?!) and it was an enjoyable place to spend some time talking. There isn't a lot of street traffic and the ambiance of the house and yard are really charming. There are different levels of terrace with varying levels of sunshine, and it appeared from the number of people working on laptops when I visited that the wi-fi may just reach outside. Score. They make a mean Spanish latte and have a huge selection of baked goods including a large number of gluten-free items. No idea whether they make them in-house or not - that would be good to know. Coffee came served with a little sliver of dark chocolate on the side, which is always appreciated. Definitely a coffee shop worth checking out. read more

CC is my spot. It's got all the makings of perfection. -Location is near busy streets but feels hidden away. -Baristas know and care about what they are doing. -You can hide in a corner upstairs or bask on their patio space outside. -It's a rare find for a cafe to have MANY dairy/wheat/sugar free snacks from which you can chose. What? I can have cafe food? Between the quality espresso making, the friendliness, and the atmosphere, this IS my fave. (Filip and Alex work too much though, tip them well.) read more

One of my favourite coffee shops. Not everyday you see a coffee shop in a heritage building. It is literally a house that was renovated to be a coffee shop. The ambience is hard to describe. When you're sitting down and drinking that cup of joe you'll think to yourself hmm.. i wonder what it was like 60 yrs ago in this very room. Was there a family cooking here or having a nice dinner? Maybe its just me... Pros: Location (nice neighbourhood), heritage building (love the red colour), unique, coffee was good, nice patio for outdoor coffee drinkers. Caffe Cittadella is one of my favourite spots to hit up near work. It is basically a re-purposed heritage house, with seating on the main floor and second floor, and a balcony on the second floor. The atmosphere is very charming, and quiet enough usually that it feels like a hidden gem. It is without a doubt my favourite spot to meet with people. They pull a swell shot of 49th Parallel espresso here and offer a little bit of chocolate on the side. I generally prefer drinking Elysian just a few blocks up Ash, but I'll come here if I'm going to sit down. The staff are super friendly and the service has always been good. I feel bad when they have to bring my coffee all the way up the stairs to me, but they're always glad to do it! I haven't had any of their baked goods or sandwiches, so I can't speak to that, but the selection always looks impressive. read more

If it weren't for the gorgeous heritage house and overall atmosphere of this cafe I probably would have given it 3 stars. The coffee is quite good but not the best I've had in the city. My only issue is that on several occasions I've been disappointed by the baked goods. The cookies are often hard and stale and almost everything has nuts which is inconvenient if you have allergies or just don't like nuts. Their savory choices are usually much better and I've been very happy with the sandwiches and soups I've tried here. Overall, this is a good place to bring a friend and chat or to study and read. read more

This place is just adorable! Honestly if you didn't know where you were going you could miss it. One of my friends showed me this great location - and I am so glad she did! I just fell in love with the quaint feel of this place! My friend and I sat upstairs on the balcony with the little table - it was wonderful! They had vegan goodies - which is always a plus in my book! I had the vegan green tea krispy. It was so tasty! I also had a chai with soy milk, but you can also get it with almond milk. When the drink came to me it was perfect drinking temp right away. I hate waiting forever to have to be able to drink my chai teas - so this is a major plus in my book! Service was super friendly. I tried a Spanish Latte today with a milk chocolate dipped orange peel and pistachio biscotti based on the recommendation from the owner on my previous review of the caramel cappuccino. As a cognoscente of tea cakes and cookies my fingertips have fondled many biscottis and I could tell it had the perfect amount of callousness. Firm enough to keep its shape as it sponged up the latte, but dainty enough to share some chocolate and pistachio fragments in the coffee. With my first bite I started to see colours I've never seen before. The synthesis of textures and flavours are so beyond this panegyric I can't describe it any way besides '5 thumbs out of 5 thumbs'. read more
