Special- seafood risotto with jumbo prawn, scallops, asparagus
    Josephine F.

Comforting Italian food at this little restaurant. There isn't a ton of seating, so it's a good idea to make a reservation. I called around 4 on a Saturday and left a voicemail requesting a 5:30 reservation and was able to secure one. I was pleasantly surprised because it was so last minute! When we got there, we saw a group get turned away because they didn't have a reservation. I heard them being told they could get a table if the reservation didn't show up, but we showed up, so they were out of luck. I ordered the seafood risotto special. It was excellent, and they didn't skimp on the seafood. A huge prawn, a bunch of good sized scallops, complemented with asparagus. I finished my plate and wanted more! Two types of bread for the table, both very good. Service is a bit slow, but the kitchen seemed small, so not surprising.

They were packed on a Tuesday night and they were there for the food. The space is small, but they have used all the space that they have very well. I started with Butternut squash soup, was very good. Came hot, and smelled lovely while I let it cool. Was worth the wait, and gave me sometime to catch up with friends. The Sol was very good as well. All the desserts were really yummy. Our waiter sang to us a lovely Italian song. Will be going back again soon.

A great dinner once again here at Caffe Giostra!! We love this great little restaurant in Petaluma. I ordered the prawns in a lovely garlic sauce with mashed potatoes and fresh summer vegetables. Our two guests had a fantastic meal as well. Hubby enjoyed his tender veal dish. We when visiting Petaluma will always come back. Our wait staff was marvelous and watching the cooks in the kitchen is always fun!

    Spinach and cheese ravioli-delicious!

We were fortunate enough that two adjacent tables were free so they were able to push the tables together and seat our party after a quick wait. Service here was attentive, and I appreciate the table-side cheese and fresh cracked pepper offering after you entree arrives. The top-up on the table bread throughout the evening was nice as well. The food was my biggest issue at Trattoria Roma. While the meatball appetizer was delicious -- super tender, seasoned well, and sauce was tomato forward with just the right amount of tartness, the pasta dishes missed the mark. The texture of the house-made gnocchi was not what I'm used to. When the gnocchi arrived, the gnocchi held its form just fine. However, no more than a few minutes into eating the dish, the gnocchi lost its shape and turned into mush, and the whole dish took on the texture of cheesy mashed potatoes. The pesto sauce I opted for with the gnocchi was heavily diluted and the whole dish needed more salt. My wife's clam linguini dish had overcooked noodles. It's a shame because the clam flavor was quite good in the dish. For a family of four, our dinner came out to about $150 for four pastas and two orders of meatballs. I wouldn't say this was my favorite meal in Downtown Petaluma.

Our waiter was super attentive and friendly, and I have to say service was great! Everything came out in a timely manner. We started out with a glass for Chianti Classico, which is a red wine. It was good, but it was warmer than room temperature. Ive been to Italy and had amazing Italian food, so the bar is set very high for us. We ordered the burrata, spaghetti carbonara, and penne salciccia. The burrata itself was very cold, the balsamic glaze that it came with was hardened, not really smooth where you can dip the burrata or prosciutto with. Having said that, the prosciutto itself was really good and the arugula made it that much better. When I order pasta, I expect the pasta to be al dente, and unfortunately both pasta dishes were too well done. The taste of the penne salciccia was actually very flavorful, and i enjoyed the sausage. The spaghetti carbonara was super heavy and buttery, maybe a little more than I'm used to. Overall, the dishes were tasty but I prefer my pasta to be al dente.

After spotting mouthwatering photos on Yelp, we chose Cucina Paradiso as our supper destination. Cucina Paradiso is a casual trattoria located in the heart of downtown Petaluma, on the town's main drag, Petaluma Boulevard. The restaurant welcomes guests to a relaxing dining experience where customers can enjoy authentic Italian cuisine in a comfortable, hospitable setting. Even on a Tuesday evening, finding parking in downtown wasn't easy, so we parked in the nearby shopping centre, River Plaza, which was about an eight-minute walk away. Our reservations were for 7 PM, but after I got held up in Fairfield, I called the restaurant to inform them that we were going to arrive late. No problem. Our arrival time was around 7:45 PM, we were immediately greeted with a friendly smile and still there was no issue with being seated immediately since most tables were unoccupied. The atmosphere of the quaint dining room was warm and hospitable. Cucina Paradiso offers old-school Italian fare, inviting guests to savour the flavours of Italy. Their diverse menu offers a nice selection of traditional pastas, flavourful mains and an extensive wine list. RIGATONI ALLA CARCERATA ($23.95) - Cielo ordered this delectable pasta. The creamy sauce, similar to vodka sauce, was worthy of licking the bowl clean, but we had to mind our manners. MEDAGLIONE DI BUE CON SALSA TARTUFATA ($42.95) - I was debating over these medallions and the fresh Halibut with capers and beurre blanc sauce ($34.95) featured on the specials of the night DINNER MENU. Our server hinted that the beef was the way to go and her suggestion was on point. This dish was hearty and the succulent meat was paired perfectly with the exquisite truffle sauce. PENNE RUSTICA ($23.95) - My hungry eyes wanted pasta, too, so I convinced Cielo to pivot our original plan of sharing a salad to ordering with me this this tube-shaped pasta. The sauce was much lighter than the one for the rigatoni. We preferred the creamier sauce, but this bowl was still very enjoyably flavourful. To complement the delicious food, Nydia's top notch customer service added to the overall experience. She was amiably engaging and extremely helpful. I almost felt like hugging her, "goodbye!" True story: After being seated at our table when we arrived, I briefly stepped outside to photograph the front of the venue for checking in on Yelp. As I was snapping the photo, a passerby asked me, "Did you just eat here or are you about to eat here?" I told him that I just arrived, had not yet eaten anything. He informed me that Cucina Paradiso is an excellent restaurant, that everything they serve is yummy. Turns out that he was right on target. Cielo and I enjoyed a delightful dinner here. I have just one complaint - that I live too far to visit on a regular basis.

This was probably my favorite part of the meal. I ended up getting the chicken parmesan and pesto gnocchi + ravioli to share with my brother. The pesto gnocchi was the tastier dish. The pesto is super creamy and the gnocchi were very fluffy. I did find that the raviolis tasted a little undercooked. The chicken parmesan wasn't my favorite. My chicken was a little too close to burnt for my liking. The burnt taste on the breading really took away from the other flavors. It could've used some more seasoning as well. The menu is on the smaller side - a few options each of appetizers, salads, pastas and entrees - and a couple of specials. We went with the bruschetta trio (the winner of the entire meal) and chose the traditional, the prosciutto and the salmon of which the traditional was the favorite. The entrees were ok. I went with the chicken piccata which was not prepared in the traditional manner of pan-frying the chicken; I'm guessing by its white anemic color it was maybe poached separately first before being added to the piccata sauce. The sauce was missing the acidity of white wine and lemon (although I'm sure they were in there) and even the capers couldn't help punch up the flavor. Between the underwhelming seasoning/flavor and the chicken missing that crispy exterior the dish just didn't deliver. My partner's salmon pasta Alfredo was also just ok, again it could have used more seasoning and the sauce was so watery it was impossible to get it to coat the fish and the pasta. I can see why a lot people enjoy Sugo - the food is good enough relative to the very reasonable menu prices and the staff is great; just know that at least some of the dishes deviate from the traditional preparations. Next time I'd stick with the bruschetta and add a salad to round out the meal.
