My family and I stopped by on a Sunday evening for dinner around 6:00 p.m. and the restaurant was pretty packed. We were fortunate enough that two adjacent tables were free so they were able to push the tables together and seat our party after a quick wait. Service here was attentive, and I appreciate the table-side cheese and fresh cracked pepper offering after you entree arrives. The top-up on the table bread throughout the evening was nice as well. The food was my biggest issue at Trattoria Roma. While the meatball appetizer was delicious -- super tender, seasoned well, and sauce was tomato forward with just the right amount of tartness, the pasta dishes missed the mark. The texture of the house-made gnocchi was not what I'm used to. When the gnocchi arrived, the gnocchi held its form just fine. However, no more than a few minutes into eating the dish, the gnocchi lost its shape and turned into mush, and the whole dish took on the texture of cheesy mashed potatoes. The pesto sauce I opted for with the gnocchi was heavily diluted and the whole dish needed more salt. My wife's clam linguini dish had overcooked noodles. It's a shame because the clam flavor was quite good in the dish. For a family of four, our dinner came out to about $150 for four pastas and two orders of meatballs. I wouldn't say this was my favorite meal in Downtown Petaluma. read more

We came in on a Saturday night and it was packed. Luckily we had a reservation so we were seated right away. Our waiter was super attentive and friendly, and I have to say service was great! Everything came out in a timely manner. We started out with a glass for Chianti Classico, which is a red wine. It was good, but it was warmer than room temperature. Ive been to Italy and had amazing Italian food, so the bar is set very high for us. We ordered the burrata, spaghetti carbonara, and penne salciccia. The burrata itself was very cold, the balsamic glaze that it came with was hardened, not really smooth where you can dip the burrata or prosciutto with. Having said that, the prosciutto itself was really good and the arugula made it that much better. When I order pasta, I expect the pasta to be al dente, and unfortunately both pasta dishes were too well done. The taste of the penne salciccia was actually very flavorful, and i enjoyed the sausage. The spaghetti carbonara was super heavy and buttery, maybe a little more than I'm used to. Overall, the dishes were tasty but I prefer my pasta to be al dente. read more

Changed our dinner plans because as we walked by this place smelled amazing! Glad my friend and I ate dinner here. We were greeted right away and they found a table for us quickly too. Service is friendly and very helpful! Caesar salad with extra anchovies was tossed and dressed to perfection. Delightfully satisfying meal. Warm & friendly staff. Small, crowded & lively dining room. The tables are a little too close together. Burrata is delicious. The sweet balsamic vinegar balances the bite of the arugula. The slices of prosciutto are smooth. Salty olives round out the flavor combo. Chicken Marsala is a saucy treat. Way above average when compared to this dish made by other less talented restaurant cooks who labor in other restaurants. This is not a sweet sauce from a cheap Marsala wine. The creaminess and mushrooms are a nice balance of earthiness and rich finesse. Tiramisu. House made. Really good. Satin pillow soft. My companion said it was the best tiramisu that she has ever had in the USA. Even the Lavazza de-caf espresso was flavorful without acid bite. No foamy crema floating on top of the coffee, tasted like a strong cup of coffee but that is forgiven because how happy the meal made me. Went for my mom's birthday with 8 people. We called for a reservation and they were able to accommodate. We ended up there a little early and they were ready for us! That doesn't happen too often in places so it was a great surprise. The service was fabulous. We always had water and the server we had was very attentive and food came out quick for 8 people. I got the lasagna and I must say, it was delicious. It was a hearty portion and I even took a bit home (if I didn't have the apps I may have finished it!). It's a bit on the pricey side but that's okay. All the portions were hearty. This place is definitely just a notch or two above casual but definitely not fancy. The food is generally good. Portion sizes are generous. Their homemade lasagna was very good and very dense. I had the pork chop, which was pounded thin and breaded like schnitzel with a lemon sauce. I found the breadcrumbs too coarse. Would have liked a smoother texture. Prices are a bit high, but they don't skimp. My fellow diners ordered a split salad for which they charge an additional three dollars, which I found gratuitous. The restaurant has a nice ambiance but didn't like the food enough to return again. They serve beer and wine. Desserts were good, but at $13 for a tiramisu, I'd rather go elsewhere for coffee and dessert. Parking is on-street or nearby garage. read more

We went in and the place wasn't busy, there were only a couple people at the bar area watching the 49ers game. Our waiter was very accommodating and nice which I always appreciate. The food was pretty tasty and so was the wine. The only thing I would say is that it's a bit pricey for what it is, I alive to add chicken to my pasta if was an extra $6. I order this spicy mariana with prawns and mushrooms on pasta and it is so delicious. their soup is surprisingly so good too! First time trying, food was great! Ordered Eggplant Parmesan appetizer and Capellini Pomodoro and Penne Salciccia entrées. Eggplant appetizer, breaded and pan fried with a generous amount of mozzarella and a delicious red sauce that was mild and not acidic tasting. Pomodordo was a nice sauce and again not acidic tasting, optional topped with Parmesan cheese. Salciccia with Italian sausage, mushrooms and spinach sauce was a slightly heavier red sauce that married perfectly with the ingredients. Dessert, chocolate molten Bundt cake with vanilla ice cream. Chocolate cake was moist, chocolatey lava goodness paired with vanilla ice cream. Wait staff was attentive, it is called out on menu about splits and extra plates so don't be surprised. My wife and I had a disappointing meal last night. It had been a year since we last dined there, and we were eager to revisit the eggplant Parmesan we had previously enjoyed, along with the spaghetti carbonara. The eggplant Parmesan we remembered had a crisp breading, light cheese, and a well-balanced marinara sauce--it was outstanding. Unfortunately, what we received this time was overcooked and smothered in penne noodles with an excessive amount of sauce, which overpowered the dish. The spaghetti carbonara was even more disappointing; the noodles were so overcooked that they turned into a bowl of soupy mush with pancetta, offering little flavor beyond an overwhelming amount of cheese. That said, I did enjoy the Pinot Noir, and the chocolate Bundt cake with ice cream was a satisfying way to end the meal. The service was attentive despite the restaurant being quite busy, which we appreciated. It's a lively restaurant when crowded, and although it was noisy, we were seated at a nice table near a large birthday party whose enthusiasm added a festive touch to the atmosphere. read more

I just stopped in for dinner tonight and it reminded me: I can't believe I haven't written a review about this place yet! One of my best friends introduced me to it a few years back, and now it is my go-to place for a friends get together and date nights in Petaluma! From the ambiance and decor to the even MORE amazing food. This place is one of my favorites. My go to is always the Salmon Piccata with veggies and mashed potatoes and also their Bruschetta is some of the best I have had! I can't post this without mentioning the stellar customer service. Drew and Tony are usually the ones that help me out when I come in to have dinner and they always remember me, and it seems like they remember most guests that may be frequent flyers which is great. They always take care of the people dining in the restaurant as if they were family. I would give this place more stars if I could. Thank you to all of you at Trattoria Roma! My partner took me here for my birthday and it was splendid! I ordered the Penne Bolognese and I've never looked back. Every time we go for Italian food this is my go to place. As you can guess, I haven't veered from getting the bolognese because... yeah you guessed it... it's that good. I would absolutely recommend this restaurant for its pasta. Had a day trip to Petaluma and I was so happy to come across this place for dinner! Parking was pretty easy since they have a garage right across the street. We ordered their meatballs and fried calamari for appetizers. Their homemade meatballs were really flavorful and well seasoned, the meat was tender and goes great with the marinara sauce. Their fried calamari were lightly breaded with great flavors. Both were perfect appetizers to start with! For entree, we ordered their veal with mushroom and ravioli. I knew I ordered the right entree after the first bite of the veal dish - it was so delicious! The veal was tender and perfectly cooked! Their ravioli were made in house, it was equally satisfying as well! Their tiramisu is a great dessert to end your meal with - it was fluffy, creamy with the perfect amount of sweetness. When the restaurant opened we had a dinner and the front of the house service was a nightmare, the food was mediocre, and the back of the house could not keep up. The ultimate was watching someone unable to get into the wine cellar because they had lost the key. My wife and I finally screwed up our courage and came back. THe place was jammed and jumpin' at 6:30 My wife's review was simple: * service - fabulous * pinot grigio - fabulous * the arugula and beet salad - fabulous * the main, the shrimp and scallop risotto - the way it should be unlik (a restaurant in Marin that shall be nameless) * overall meal - fabulous My review: * front of the house: from the maitre d' through the waiter to the bus person - timely, competent and friendly * the server recommended "the chianti"; I ordered the chianti riserva. I got the former which was too fruit forward for me * the beet salad - very tasty; I'm fussy i like more beets and less greens * the calamari dore was very good, the sides were a little to "American roadhouse" (lightly cooked mixed veg) * the back of the house kept up with the demand and we were in and our in an hour and 15 mins (no dessert/coffee) If there was a vote for Most Improved (from mumble to very very good) Trattoria Roma would win hands down! The food served here is exceptionally delicious and I seriously can not wait for my next visit. I would drive almost 2 hours for the food served here. While everything that we ordered was absolutely bursting with so much fresh flavors, the real star of this show is the bruschetta appetizer. When I say this is the BEST bruschetta I have even tasted, I am not lying. The bread alone is so warm, fresh and not overly crunchy. The fresh tomato medley has so much rich flavor and the pesto paste with melted cheese really tops this off! Talk about a flavors party in your mouth. This item is a must try. Both pasta dishes had just the right amount of sauce without overly drenching the al dente pasta. I've been wanting to try this restaurant ever since they opened several years ago and 2 nights ago was the first opportunity I've had to come here. My brother called Thursday night & made reservations for 6:30pm Friday for a party of 4. Upon check-in we were told that our table wasn't ready because the occupants were taking longer than expected. When we heard them singing "Happy Birthday" we knew it wasn't going to be fast. It ended up being an additional 15 or so minutes. They did offer us a table in the middle of the restaurant but none of us wanted to sit in the dead center, it's like you're on display so we opted to wait. Our server was Antonio, who seated us and proceeded to ask if we wanted to hear the specials. Though all the specials sounded delicious, we all opted to order from the menu. We ordered the Bruschetta as an appetizer, and we split 2 Caesar salads between the 4 of us. They do charge a split charge when splitting salads and pasta. This is clearly marked on their menu, as well as dishes that they do not allow you to split. My brother ordered the Fettucini Gambari (prawns, mushrooms & creamy alfredo sauce, though you can choose their tomato sauce if you like), my niece ordered the Fettucini Pesto (cheese, garlic, vasil, pesto sauce and fresh vegetables), my nephew ordered the Tortellini Romana (cheese filling, proscuitto, peas, Parmesan cream sauce) and I had the Spaghetti Carbonara (pancetta, egg, Parmesan and Pecorino Romano cheese). To say we all enjoyed our meal is an understatement! Everything was great! I am a huge fan of traditional Spaghetti Carbonara and all I can say is if they could've made it with guaniale instead of pancetta I would've been in Heaven!! We ordered the chocolate lava cake & tiramisu to share for dessert and they were both delicious! The food came out fast and at the perfect temperature. Antonio was very attentive as well as the waitstaff who never let our water glasses get more than half empty and were fast on removing empty plates. It's not an overly huge restaurant which makes it great for hearing your conversations, it has great ambiance and a charm all it's own. Parking is easy in the parking structure directly across the street as well as street parking, but be warned there is a 2 hour limit on street parking. One word - eggs. I rarely find a place with carbonara on the menu let alone carbonara made with eggs. So many times the sauce is made with some type of cream, which is cheating and not as good. And this carbonara was so creamy and just perfect. Next time I will skip all bread so I can finish my dish because it's just not the same the next day. And I NEVER find tiramisu made with egg instead of whipped cream. My partner knows how much I love desserts and he had to hear about how much better it is when made with egg. So perfectly moist were the savoiardi. If there was one thing I wish it had was some Marsala! Anyway...my partner loved his meal, Pene Bolognese. And the bruschetta was very good too. My dining companion had the potato gnocchi and they were definitely hand rolled. Portions were plentiful. Eggplant Parmesan appetizer a great choice to share. Wine list could use improvement especially in wine country. Tables are close together and dinner for two had you dining close to the next couple but we struck up conversations and had a good time . Operating in a to-go order basis, our family has found a way to try places where we wouldn't take our kids anyway. The restaurant I've seen many times & today we tried out 4 entrees and 2 salads. We started with Caesar Salad and Insalata Mista, both were great to go. The Ceasar had closer to homemade croutons and large slices of Parmesan cheese. My husband got the Pescatore, loaded with seafood, mild heat and good balance to the saltiness of the premium quality seafood. We also had Fettuccine Alfredo with chicken; large amount of chicken for extra cost, tasty sauce with perfectly cooked pasta, Capellini Pomodoro; our kids favorite, I think adding a bit more olive oil and salt helped recover from the to-go order (the to-go packaging seemed to soak up some sauce and lastly the Fettuccine Pesto; loaded with veggies and a sauce covered pasta. Overall, $104 for everything that was done exactly when they stated it would be ready. We will have plenty of leftovers, which will be just as food. What a pleasant experience at this restaurant in the heart of downtown Petaluma. We wanted a nice meal and low key quiet setting - we picked a great location felt like "regular's"! We had the NY Steak special and the special chicken risotto just fabulous larger servings we definitely could have split a meal because we ordered calamari and shared spumoni for dessert. Luis was a terrific waiter and the staff was very attentive filling water and checking in with us. You can't go wrong if you decide to eat here.
