after a particularly depressing and wet walk through Walnut Creek, I happened into Cafe La Scala's welcoming doors. I stepped into a lively dining area but was still hesitant to get my hopes up due to my overwhelmingly bad experience with bay area cuisine. I ordered the white chocolate raspberry mocha, an intriguing sounding flavor combination that caught my eye. after bracing for disappointment, i was pleasantly surprised to taste the delicious beverage that was prepared for me. congratulations La Scala, this individual will postpone killing himself for one more day thanks to you! read more

I like to come here often, But, as of late the service has been very bad in the mornings. This morning I ordered a Cappuccino & I got something that had a lot of foam & very little coffee. Good organic tea. Good wifi, Nice staff EXCEPT FOR THE OWNER... or supposedly the owner. Young Fellow with heavily Tatoo'd left forearm and flat top up hair doo and an ear-ring. This 20-something year old, pridefully declared that he is the owner and displayed alot of arrogance and rude attitude. He openly called one of his employees "Gay" in a derogatory manner. This was in response to me noting a resemblance between him and the other worker. This "OWNER" blew me off with "I am the owner and he is just an employee and he does not have a tattoo and also he is gay..." and I said, I think you have a resemblance and he was like "yea yea yea whatever" and walked off as if he has something important to handle. The "Owner" steps outside and starts chatting and gossiping about girls with someone on his cellphone. He was very arrogant, rude and immature. This short interaction just about messed up my experience here to the point that I decided to write this review just so they know how I felt about it. Have not tried the food, had some tea which was hot and fresh and organic. Location is good proximity to downtown. Wifi is good, other staff are friendly. But gotta say, if you have 1 bad apple in there (shamefully he says he is the owner) it can make for a poor customer experience and that basically took several stars away on this review. Too bad a place with such great location and potential is run by such an inept owner. Until yesterday we were frequent patrons of La Scala and have been for almost 20 years! Recently though the food has taken a dive and management practices are downright dumb. This place is a good spot to do work in. I've seen many a student plugged into their laptops working here. They offer wifi to customers only, so heads up if you plan on working here you do have to buy something. They offer a variety of coffee and tea drinks and have pastries and desserts. On this occasion decided to give in and get the tiramisu, and I have to say it was just alright. For a piece that cost almost $6 I was expecting, first off, a more sizable piece, and second, something that tasted a little better. To me is wasn't all that special, you do taste the espresso in it but there was just too much whip cream to lady finger ratio than I would like. This is my favorite spot to sit and read, write an essay, have coffee, or catch up with an old friend. This is the perfect spot to get work done. There are many outlets for charging all your electronic needs and the people who work there are so friendly. I often order an affogato because it is so delicious. Hazelnut ice cream with an espresso shot is my favorite. Sometimes in the evenings it can get crowded but I have found that the best times to go are between 12 and 4pm on weekdays. They have outdoor seating but no outlets outside. The food is quite good as well. My review keeps getting deleted. Let's try this again. Came in wanting an Iced Coffee, like I usually come in for 2 times a week. Not because it's good but because I do not have fast Wi-Fi at home and this place is open late. The Columbian chick behind the counter makes my drink wrong every time. She is extremely rude and needs immediate coaching on customer service. Every time I would come in she was rude and made you feel unwelcomed/wanted. She finishes her conversations with other employees before even asking how she can help. This particular time she made my iced drink hot, she gave me attitude when I let her know I ordered an iced drink. She then continues to finish the drink and after gets a cup, fills it with a bunch of ice and then pours my HOT drink in the cup filled with ice. Caffe La Scala has been my favorite late night cafe and lunch spot in Walnut Creek since the mid-90's. Over the years I've collected so many memories there I will admit nostalgia may affect my review but every time I return I'm still happy with the food and service. My lunch favorites are the cesar salad and tomato bisque. I once had a friend who had recently moved to NYC ask me to bring her a thermos of their tomato bisque when I visited because she missed it so much. I used to order one or both of these items for lunch at least 3-4 times a week when I worked downtown. If you're looking for something sweet, their cheesecakes are the perfect size and there are always a variety of flavors to choose from. The cookies and cannelloni are perfect treats with an espresso drink, and the macaroons are sweet and moist. If you need to study or do a little work, you're in good company here to sit and stay a while. There's plenty of seating inside and out, and it never hurts that it's one of the last places to close downtown. If it's late parking is never an issue either! read more

Free Wi-Fi, open late, & great place to study! I have been looking for a place to study and that is open late since I moved back home. They are open until midnight or 1am depending on which day it is and their iced coffee is delicious! Overall the atmosphere is filled with people who are studying, relaxing and eating, on a date, or just chatting. Not too loud and not too quiet for me. The workers have been really nice and never had an issue. Highly recommend the chicken caprese panini or the prosciutto panini. It comes with a side of salad and the bread has a perfect crunch with each bite. read more

Just had the most amazing croissant of my life at Caffe La Scala. So perfectly layered, crispy on the outside, melt in your mouth flaky, and then with a soft warm center. Like... wow... Their coffees are amazing and the atmosphere is so relaxing. Grabbing breakfast and sitting outside there is like a perfect little escape to a Parisian bistro. Three Stars. This place I feel is hit or miss. The coffee is decent, nothing special. I've mostly come here for studying. As anyone who studies/works frequently in coffee shops must be aware, finding outlets are always a struggle. All the perimeter tables have their own outlets which is awesome! The annoying thing about their internet is that as per their policy, you have to buy something every 2 hours to keep using their internet. This place is my no means cheap, so having to buy something every 2 hours can get expensive really quickly, especially if you're like me who likes to camp out all day in a coffee shop. They give you a passcode when you buy something, which lasts for only 2 hours. A few times that I've been the workers have been nice enough to give me a few passcodes so I didn't have to keep buying. Which leads me to the staff at this place. Completely hit or miss. One lady that works there I distinctly remember was extremely extremely rude, and she just seemed as if she didn't want to even be there. The other staff member (who was super sweet) had to apologize for her attitude. The vibe at night also starts to get different. They're open late, but people at night come for drinks, etc. so it's not the best environment to study in. But they're open later than most coffee shops. read more

Great lunch and/or study spot in a casual european cafe, that of which is rare to find around these parts. Tomato soup is amazing and sandwiches that I have had are pretty good too. I recommend the tiramisu--it is light and fluffy! Some items can range on the pricey side for what you get, but the relaxing ambiance here usually makes up for it. Breakfast should start great, but when the cashier/server has an attitude, it doesn't go well. The food tastes okay, but overpriced. Serve it with an attitude (like an I'm-not-enjoying-my-work-this-morning-and-I-don't-like-you attitude) and it becomes bland. It's not Florida. It's California. Let's get to the most important part - there are outlets EVERYWHERE in this place. So if you are working, save yourself some trouble and come here. No more worrying about if you can snag one of the few seats near outlets because this place is literally lined with outlets. Oh yeah, there is food and drink too! I got an iced tea and margherita pizza. The pizza was very good (you could probably split between two people for lunch, but I was hungry, lol). But the iced tea was the highlight of my meal! It had a light fruity taste which was excellent. Their desserts looked good too. I didn't try any but there was a table next to me where the group had ordered only desserts... very tempting! There is some outside seating (in an atrium-like area, so it's pretty cool even when it's hot outside). Past the atrium is a bathroom, just ask the staff for the passcode. The bathroom is extremely clean (honestly it's kind of fancy). read more

I always come to this cafe for work and always order lattes or drinks with desserts and have no problems or altercations with staff. These past couple of times, I visited the cafe and have not had good interactions with this blond straight-haired lady. I ordered a coffee with dessert and I sat down at a table that says, "reserved for food orders only." She comes to my table and tells me that I cannot sit down at the "reserved for food" tables when I literally have a $9 dessert that apparently does not count as food; and coffee and have already started my work. This has happened 3-4 times already and I still have not spoken up about it. Today, what I witnessed was shocking. There was a brown man sitting down at the table with no food but a dessert and coffee and a caucasian man sitting next to him with NO food on his table and the straight blond-haired lady decided to go up to the brown man and told him to leave if he does not have a food order. Mind you, a dessert is considered a food group by many experts. The racism in this place is mind-boggling. If you are a person of color, I would suggest staying clear of this place. read more

Hands down my favorite late night study spot! Having been in school since preschool I often find myself looking for a good place to study away from home. Being that I can be a Grade A (pun intended) procrastinator I need a place that is open late which Caffe La Scala is (open til midnight weekdays and 1am weekends). Did I mention they serve coffee, tea, beer, wine, food, and desserts? How cool is that Free Wi-Fi and Wine, what a fabulous combo. Oh and they have lots of plugs. This is great because there is nothing worst then being limited in the seating you can choose based on plug location. Only downside is that it is always crowded and tables get picked up super quickly so be sure to get your table first and then your drink. read more

Lo and behold, today was a "work day" where I would hole myself in a cafe, which coincidentally is the place where I do my best work. I ordered a prosciutto panini, a small iced coffee, and I was off to work. The panini was one of the better ones I've ever had from a cafe. Crispy, crunchy, cheesy, and full of flavor. An endless strip of outlets outline the walls, so ultimately, you'll see the laptopers outline the interior of this place like it's some kind of laptop cult. Dare to sit in these "laptop only" spots, you dare to get strangled by a laptop charger cord! If you're simply eating or reading a book or something, grab a seat in the middle and nobody gets hurt. A group of guys with a little cash gathered in a room. One asks, "What are the worst possible customer building methods you can think of?" And then Caffe La Scala was born. (Or at least that's how I imagine it went down.) Went with a few friends to study- open late, free wifi, maybe a decent place to get some work done and grab dessert. Paid $5 for a bland cookie and water. Friends held off. Flash forward 30 minutes and my friends are told they have to leave because they haven't purchased anything. Considering the prices of everything, kicking my small group out was probably a loss of around $30 for them. Things to know: 1) Wifi isn't free. When you make a purchase, they give you a code that can only be used by one person. 2) Restrooms require a code. This place is basically makes you feel like a kindergartener asking mommy for everything you need (in exchange for money). 3) They actually have tables that say they are reserved for customers ordering food, yet my cookie purchase wasn't a valid food purchase for usage of this table. 4) $5 debit/credit minimum 5) Non-existent customer service. 6) Save your money. There are plenty of other cafes that will treat you much better. read more

This place used to be one of my go to places back in the high school days. The ambiance of the place (interior wise) has not changed much over the years (which I love) and would actually give a 5 star rating based upon the interior decor alone. Located in the heart of downtown Walnut Creek right on Main St. - It's the perfect place to meet up with some friends, socialize and people watch. I have been here a few times over the last week. The coffee is nothing above ordinary though, good and the pastries are decent (from what I have tried). I recently ordered one of there chocolate soufflés and it was good (very rich) though, nothing superb. Service is friendly, the coffee and pastries are decent and they also have a good selection of sandwiches and salads to choose from, not to mention they also serve wine. My only complaint is that they don't have plastic to go cups for your iced beverages and they are a little pricey. Other than that, it's the perfect place to mingle, sit back, pull up a chair open your laptop and people watch. read more

Sit out back by the fountain, very peaceful. Every time I walk in here I am transported to a cafe somewhere in Italy or Greece. I love the relaxed feel and decor. Yes, the table arrangement is a bit odd, but there is plenty of seating. The coffee and espresso never disappoint and I love their lattes, super strong too. Prices are typical; maybe a bit more. I frequented this place 10-15 years ago and wrote my thesis here. It's a decent place to study with outlets for your laptop and enough space. Having moved back I'm disappointed by the service. It has gone downhill. One barista gives off an air of superiority and rudeness (mostly to young women, it seems, though she seems to appreciates and lightens up with male attention). Doesn't acknowledge or apologize for mistakes, giving someone a caffeine vs decaf (that's a big one) or wrong menu item. It's tiring to go to a place that acts as if they're doing you a big favor every time you communicate with them. Is it worth coming here to be treated poorly? I would recommend the management re-train or hire folks who have compassion and want to be around people. read more

This place is great for late night escapes away from my dungeon. Mother never thinks to direct her search for me here, and besides, she hates the smell of hipsters. Thankfully, they are just enough to ward mother away from this place, but not enough to make the stench of superiority overwhelming. A whiff of a-holeness, if you will. Mmmm! I like this place because the ambiance is busy, which is nice, plus there is a very interesting girl that shaved half of her hair away which I find FASCINATING. Mother cuts my hair with a bowl and says I look beautiful when I remind her of the Beatles, pre LSD. I think it looks outdated but mother says I'm her little angel, she says. The downside is that the man that owns the place sits in his damn reserved table, reads his foreign newspaper and plays the worst dag nab music west of the Mississippi. Some people think that if they play their music for a crowd, that people's ears will perk up and they'll say to themselves, oh wow, this is GREAT! They'll go out and discover their new found love for the music, and soon, everyone in the world will listen to their dumb music. Well I can assure you, corner, newspaper-reading owner, that no one will ever, EVER like what can only be described as polka flavored acid jazz that you like to blast. Now here's a place I seriously don't understand. After a few long evenings of filming in Walnut Creek, my assistant and I would need a caffeine fix before we head back to San Francisco. The only place open would be this place. The first time around, my assistant director and I grabbed some mochas and tried to do some work on our laptops. It was crowded, the wi-fi was weak and the drinks tasted awful. Yet, we didn't let that bother us. Perhaps the cafe was having an off day. Second time around, we had two of our producers visit our shoot. As always, we wrapped late and decided to meet 'over coffee' afterwards so we suggested this place (in hindsight, a terrible decision). So the four of us order a few food items off the menu. A slice of pizza, a few desserts and a few hot drinks. We ordered enough because the final price tag was rather pricey. So we go to "The Table" where it's reserved for 'customers who order food.' We were instructed to leave the table. My assistant told the rude barista that 'we ordered food and are waiting for it to come out.' The rude little beezy just cocked her head and said, 'oh,' and gave us this look of disdain. Perhaps she was quick to judge since we had our laptops and devices out. Now, let's get to the real problem here. The menu items--food, coffee and all--are terrible! Bland coffee, tasteless pizza, stale desserts. It was just not appetizing, especially for the price. Then, the rude service? My question is, what's so great about this place? My producer looked at me and said, "we should have just went to a diner or held out till we got back to the city." For as long as I lived out in Concord, I don't think I ever came in here. I've seen it before as far back as when I was a kid, but never went in. After an CMYE, I wanted some late night dessert. I used my trusty Yelp app and saw that they were open until 1am. I came here, had hot tea, and a generous slice of tiramisu. The tiramisu was pretty good. It was a little rich and ended up taking the rest home. The ladies working behind the counter were very nice. Awful! I ordered pizza. It tasted like the frozen kind you buy in Safeway, dry and flavorless. The cappuccino was watery and had big bubbles instead of real foam. The waitress screwed up my order, and when I told her so she argued with me. She seemed obsessed with the Caesar salad, even though I'd never ordered one and never even talked to her about it. Indeed, I didn't even know they had Caesar--I hadn't looked at that on the menu. "Oh, you changed your mind about the Caesar and forgot to tell me?" she said, twice. "NO," I had to repeat, "I never ordered one." She seemed to think I was lying. So then she took away my pizza. "That part wasn't wrong," I told her. "You said you didn't order this," she insisted. "No, I didn't," I said. "I never said I didn't order the pizza." Yes, she was that stupid. The Caesar, when it came, was too chilled and tasteless. There's no way I'd go to this place again. Everyone around me was using the wifi and doing homework, though why you can't do this in a Peets or a library is a mystery to me. The coffee is better in Peets and a library is quieter. Or, here's a radical one, how about home? Anyway, if you're looking for wifi you might want to come here, though I don't know why when every place has wifi today. If you're looking for FOOD, well, as I said, seriously you can go to Safeway and get a frozen pizza for half the price and the same taste.
