My cousin and I sat down for an after-school study date. We noticed the signs by the outlets that we had to buy food and could only be there for two hours. OK. No problem. We both buy cookies, as everything else on the menu is really expensive. Then as we're sitting down, we find out we aren't allowed to sit at the table side by side because we didn't purchase enough food. Then the waitress had to come back and tell us that the tables were too close together. Then she came back 2 minutes later to say the boss/owner said if we want to sit there we have to purchase more than just cookies. Which were already 5 dollars each. It sucks because this place has such a nice ambiance, but the attitude is not worth it. Also to note-- the owner was sitting in a corner on his phone the entire time judging my cousin and I. Not sure if it's because we're people of color or not, just saying. The two girls working were very nice, but incredibly loud and cackling the whole 20 minutes we were allowed to sit down. Do not come here if you're looking for a place to study. I came in with my laptop, planning to get some work done, and noticed that nearly all the tables with outlets had signs saying you must buy food to sit there. Fine I bought a $6 croissant I didn't even want just to sit down. A few minutes later, an employee tells me I still can't sit there unless I buy food or a drink... but I just did. Mind you, the tables were completely empty, and I was already a paying customer on top of the $5 I spent on parking. When I asked for a refund for my barely touched croissant, they refused. Wow what horrible service. Went there to buy a drink and a pastry and sat on one of their outdoor tables. My 10 year old son had food with him from a food truck and was eating his food while I was enjoying my pastry and drink. An employee came and told us we had to leave because of my son's food. Felt absolutely terrible and felt even worse for my son. How heartless can you tell a child to stop eating and have us leave, even though we were paying customers at the cafe. It was at night and the cafe was not busy at all. Never again. Employee and company should feel ashamed of themselves. This is a really cute French-style cafe. The people behind the counter were nice. I had a combination of the veggie sandwich but added turkey and my friend had the cáptese sandwich. Both were big and yummy. My only complaint was that it came with a salad that didn't have any dressing. That's harsh! My friend also had a very yummy looking latte. We had planned to get dessert but were filled by the sandwiches. That is unfortunate because their dessert selection was plentiful and beautiful!!!! Parking was weird with the google map. It put you behind it and on the side. I had never been to la Scala before so I didn't know how to get their from the parking lot. I come here a couple of times with my partner to study. I usually have no issues here - I order two drinks and sit outside. But today I had to charge my laptop, so I decided to sit indoors. An employee approached me with a condescending tone, about to kick me out if I didn't place an order. Before this interaction, I had paid for my partner's macchiato and ordered water for myself. I felt extremely unwelcome and frustrated that people lost their manners and customer service etiquette. I understand the notion of wanting customers who patronize your business, but the attitude is definitely unnecessary. I came here on a Friday night with my boyfriend because chess club was here today. I ordered the scala sandwich and iced matcha latte and I got the roasted chicken sandwich for my boyfriend. The scala sandwich was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. My boyfriend liked his roasted chicken sandwich but he would have liked it better if it had sourdough instead of the bread it came with. I ordered the roasted chicken sandwich because I read in a review that it is good. I thought the matcha latte would be good because someone said it was in a review. Maybe the matcha latte is better when it is hot. It didn't taste like matcha to me. Seems like a busy caffe. Chess club was outside in the back and lots of tables and seats outside in the back. Family-owned and open for over twenty years, this charming European cafe is almost as much a Walnut Creek institution as the city hall across the street. Everyone was raving about their Tiramisu, which is K........... favorite dessert. Since I cannot eat gluten, I had the chocolate flourless cake. I was disappointed with my dessert because, it did not have enough chocolate fudge in the middle. As for the Tiramisu, K........ it was good but, she felt like it was missing something. I've probably spent hundreds of dollars at La Scala over the years, but recently every time I come here I feel like I'm not welcome. Some of the girls who work there are really sweet, but I always get anxious if I see this one employee. On multiple occasions I felt pressured by him to order food, even though I had already purchased coffee and planned to order food all while sitting at the non-food tables. His approach is rude, pushy, and disrespectful. It also seems like he always targets a certain demographic of people; if you're a student you are definitely not welcome here no matter how much time and money you spend. The tall, male, employee seems to enjoy kicking people out even when the place is half empty. I've witnessed him kick out several customers for not buying food or requesting them to move tables. I can't really understand why you'd want to intimidate customers into buying food or leaving, especially when they're regulars. I used to enjoy coming here but I'm never coming back. There are several other cafes in Walnut Creek that have a way better atmosphere for getting work done. I'd rather go where I feel respected as a customer. read more

I've been coming here for years. I will no longer be a customer here and I will be letting everyone in my life know what happened to me there. As a student I like that it is open late, though it is important to note that their wifi goes in and out frequently. I'll be going to Philz Coffee now since they are open until 8pm. If you are looking for a place to sit and do work, you are not welcome at La Scala. Some employees are personable but the taller middle aged brunette man there is truly rude, greedy, and should not work in customer service. I was sitting at a middle table (not a booth where you are only permitted to sit with food orders) and he bent down, got in my face, and asked if I was going to order something. I told him I had plans to order food in a little bit, I wasn't hungry yet. He said "you've been sitting here a long time." I said that I was going to order food soon, but if it's really necessary I guess I can order it now. He said "yes that would be great". What difference does it make that I order food now rather than in 20 minutes? The cafe was half empty and I was not taking up space. Overall, his approach felt controlling, disrespectful, and demeaning. As a paying customer of years, I feel really upset. This is a pattern of behavior from La Scala, especially from this man. I don't think they realize this approach hurts their business more than it helps, as this made me not want to return. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Cafes are meant for relaxation, leisure, and productivity. If they do not want people there unless they are constantly ordering items, they need to rebrand as a restaurant. read more

I'm not one to drink coffee or hot beverages, but I was invited to this place for a small meeting. I'm all about pastries and burgers so initially I had no intentions on ordering anything. But of course I could not resist the urge to purchase something from their menu. They do have salads and sandwiches but it was so close to dinner time so, I was stuck between a nice pastry or a hot beverage. Based off my coffee drinking friends preferences and drinks that I normally hear about, I ordered a caramel macchiato. I had the option to get whipped cream on top or not, and of course I got the whipped cream. I'm not too familiar with how coffee is "supposed" to taste, but it had to be good if I finished my cup completely! I expected it to be scorching hot, but surprisingly I was able to take a sip soon after receiving my cup. I wouldn't say that I will start drinking coffee from now on, but I'm not as opposed to it as I was before. Therefore, I don't mind purchasing a drink here and there. As for the setting, it was nice and relaxing. There is available seating indoor and outdoor. Also the server was upbeat and welcoming, which is always a plus in my book! However the attention to food has declined. 1-veggie quiche was old and dried out . 2- roasted chicken salad was sub par: Roasted chicken cut into small squares - dried out. Lettuce cut into small pieces and included a lot of "ends-stems" of the lettuce, a lot white lettuce - again more of the ends. Small flavorless grape tomatoes, a ton of almonds, dressing drizzled across the mountain of almonds...dressing not tossed with lettuce....alas the simple elegant flavorful: ripe tomatoes, fresh and juicy chicken salad is gone.
