A terrible experience, to say the least, from beginning to end. We ordered four pizzas: two Margheritas and two with cherry tomatoes and mozzarella, without tomato sauce. I had to carry the drinks and the glasses with ice to the table myself. We sat down and waited for the pizzas. The guy brought out the first two, the Margheritas, and just by looking at them, they already didn't seem very promising. No silverware was provided either. But what immediately caught my attention was that the two pizzas looked completely different from each other. One had visible pieces of mozzarella, while the other had what looked like melted cheese spread over the top and was considerably more overcooked and dry. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures at that point because I'm not in the habit of going to a restaurant and immediately taking pictures of my food when it arrives. Then the other two pizzas with cherry tomatoes arrived. Once again, they looked different from each other, but one in particular had basically no mozzarella at all and literally eight cherry tomato halves on it. The little girl with us took the first slice because she was hungry. At that point, I got up and pointed out to the waitress -- the one with red hair -- that there was no mozzarella on the pizza. She told me she would have another one made with "more" mozzarella. The problem wasn't that it needed more mozzarella; there was practically none to begin with. On top of that, the pizza was paper-thin, crunchy like a cracker, and not even remotely round. After waiting about 10 minutes for the replacement pizza, the same red-haired waitress brought pizzas to the table next to ours, along with silverware, water, glasses, and napkins. Fine. Whatever. I called her over and asked whether they were actually making the replacement pizza she had told me they would make. She replied that the "pizza maker" had said there was mozzarella on the pizza, so he wasn't going to make another one. I honestly asked her if she was kidding me. She pointed to one tiny spot on the pizza where you could barely make out what might have been a trace of mozzarella. I asked her if she was serious, and she insisted that there was mozzarella on the pizza. At that point, I saw a gentleman walk behind the bar and assumed he might be the owner. He was. I asked him to come over to our table, showed him the pizza, and simply asked him: "Do you see mozzarella on this pizza?" To his credit, he was completely straightforward and immediately said no, there was no mozzarella. He was very kind and asked if I wanted another pizza. I declined several times, but he insisted and asked me to wait five minutes so they could make another one for us to take home. About 10 minutes later, he brought us the pizza and we left. Aside from the fact that this was probably the worst pizza I have ever eaten in my life, I honestly cannot remember receiving service this bad -- perhaps not even in some of the worst bars in Havana, Cuba. And then there was the "master pizza maker," who walked behind the bar a couple of times with the attitude of a bargain-basement Gordon Ramsay, without even bothering to look at our table, acting as though the problem had absolutely nothing to do with him. I won't even get into the cleanliness of the counter. Thankfully, before the pizza without mozzarella ended up being eaten by the dog at home, I remembered to take a picture of it. The only positive thing I can say about this experience is the owner. He was extremely kind, professional, and accommodating, and I genuinely appreciated the way he handled the situation. However, in my opinion, he seriously needs to reconsider who is running the pizza station, because with food and service like this, he risks losing customers -- and ultimately the business itself. read more

New ownership has absolutely ruined this place. Prices went up overnight while quality went down. Most of the longtime staff are gone, morale is clearly in the gutter, and the place feels nothing like it used to. Service has suffered, cleanliness has slipped, and the whole operation feels neglected. Forcing Crafted Coupe out was the final straw and dumbest decision. It was one of the best hidden cocktail spots in San Diego and a huge part of what made this place special. This time I tried the cotto e funghi which had mushrooms & prosciutto last time I tried the diavola which is spicy and delicious I love that they are made with san marzano tomatoes. Pizza was still good this time although we noticed more oil pools on the pizza this time around. We tried their carbonara pizza and have to say that we prefer their tomato sauce pizzas much more because the acid gives the pizza more interesting flavor; carbonara pizza felt "flat" and one dimensional in terms of flavor. Best pizza in socal. All the ingredients are so fresh and complement each other well. The dough is light and airy but still has a great crisp. The staff was so nice and I spoke to the pizza chef for some time and he was also very kind and talked to me about pizza. This used to be my FAVORITE pizza place. But I don't think I'll ever be able to eat pizza again after my experience today. I ordered the Rubino pizza, and as I was going to take a bite, my friend grabbed me and stopped me because it was COVERED IN MAGGOTS. I was so disgusted I forgot to take a picture of it. This is a really nice place. Pizza is really good. A lot lighter than what I'm used to. You get more of the flavor of the ingredients since the crust etc. is thin which is nice. Very good quality. I also had the chai latte here which can be spiced or vanilla, it was really good! The less sweeter one is the spiced. They have a good amount of seating and that includes outside. The staff and service was good. It's in a nice area. Parking can be a little challenging but it is North Park. But they have a small garage you can park in, in the alley which is free if your walking along the stores on that block. Which was right where Calabria was at so that was great!. We've been coming here for over 15 years and have always loved this restaurant. It used to be one of our favorite pizza places, especially when Leo was making the pizzas. He always made the restaurant feel welcoming, and the quality and consistency were outstanding. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was incredibly disappointing. We ordered exactly what we always do: three Carbonaras (with added mushrooms) and three Diavolas. The first Carbonara came out with tomatoes on it, even though it has never had tomatoes in all the years we've been ordering it. When we pointed this out, the staff insisted that this is how they've always made the Carbonara, which simply isn't true based on our many years of dining here. We asked them to remake that pizza and specifically requested that the other two Carbonaras, which hadn't come out yet, be made without tomatoes. The first replacement was corrected, although the egg was cooked all the way through instead of the runny egg it traditionally had. Even more frustrating, the other two Carbonaras still came out with tomatoes despite us asking ahead of time for them to be corrected. While they did give us an extra Diavola pizza, what bothered us most was the way the situation was handled. There was no sincere apology, and one staff member repeatedly shook his head at us as if we were the ones causing the problem. It made us feel unwelcome rather than like loyal customers who were simply asking for the meal we have ordered the same way for years. It's really sad to see how much this place has changed. We have supported this restaurant for over 15 years because of the consistently great food and warm atmosphere. Sadly, this experience left us feeling that the quality of both the food and the customer service is no longer what it once was. read more

My wife and I ended our trip to Albany at Caffe Calabria after a rough experience elsewhere, and it was exactly what we needed. We have been back several times and it never disappoints. The dining room is warm and inviting, staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and there's comfortable spacing between tables. We started with the fried calamari - the calamari can be enough for two - and meatballs. For those of you dining in a group of four, take notice, sadly, only three meat balls are served as an appetizer. As entrees my wife had the chicken marsala served over linguini, and I stuck with my go-to, the veal cutlet parmigiana: a breaded veal cutlet covered in marinara and melted cheese on a bed of mal tagliati. Both were excellent. Our pasta was al dente and the cutlets were delectable. We finished with a generous slice of carrot cake and cappuccinos. We saw this place called CAFFE CALABRIA after dining in one of the restaurants nearby. I told my husband I wanted to grab something small and sweet to eat. Upon entering, I saw a Big Pizza Oven, but we were still so full from the restaurant nearby, so we turned our attention to the right side upon entering and we saw bunch of pastries and sandwiches and a listing of their hot drinks. I decided to go with their: * LATTE *RASPBERRY ALMOND SCONES *AFFOGATO I love their LATTE, it smells so good and it's one of the most delicious Lattes I've had. I would come again and again for their coffee here whenever I am in the area. Their AFFOGATO was delicious too. I have had affogato somewhere before, and usually I would only finish one, but I believe I could eat more affogato here. Their RASPBERRY ALMOND SCONES were so good too, fresh and not overly sweet. Next time we will try their Pizza here, but their coffee here is the one I can say that I can recommend that it's really good. While you're there don't forget to check out their Big Coffee Roaster, you won't get near it, but it's nice to see fresh coffee in the making. Also, don't forget to check out their cute wall of Coffee cups near the restroom area, Even inside their Bathroom there's a wall of different coffee cups on display, It's kind of odd for me to see a wall of cups while in the bathroom, but it's a cute display. Our main issue is where we were seated, the music was shifting between uncomfortably loud and quiet. When we told the staff about the music issues, we were simply told that the owner was testing out the speakers. However, these volume issues lasted for over 30 minutes until we left. This place is big and you will find them not only serving coffee but pizza and drinks (bar). It has a charm to it, maybe because years ago it used to be a bank. Yes, they have saved the Safe. This place was FILTHY! The tables are chairs were soooo dirty. We wiped the table we sat at because none of them were cleaned (even though the place was pretty empty and not busy at all) and the wet wipe was BLACK on both sides. The tables were also sticky and just gross vibes right off the bat. The coffee and pastries were ok. The pastries didn't look appetizing at all. The pistachio croissant was deflated and the fruits on the fruit tart were wilted. The taste was better than the appearance, but the unclean tables and chairs on top of the unappetizing appearance of the pastries makes this place not returnable for us. I am reading here that the place recently changed ownership and has gone downhill since. It makes sense now, because i couldn't make out how this place has such high reviews. It needs to close down as there are much MUCH better places all over North Park. This one is an easy skip. read more

Caffe Calabria is authentic as it gets with its amazing selection of coffee, pizzas and Italian cocktails. Located in North Park, Caffe Calabria is an excellent cafe with roasting machines on site, a large wood fired oven and a long service bar for hot drinks, food and cocktails. Seating is plentiful with both indoor and outdoors. For starters we ordered Happy Hour cocktails consisting of an Aperol Spritz and Vodka Collins along with the Insulate Caprese. The heirloom tomatoes were fresh and the burrata was a creamy goodness. The pizza at Caffe Calabria is excellent. It's Neapolitan style cooked in a wood fired oven. The soft chewy dough has a taste like no other coupled with the San Marzano tomato sauce and mozzarella fior di latte makes it super authentic. The pizzas we ordered were the Margherita D.O.C. and Prosciutto. The Mozzarella di Buffala on the Margherita D.O.C. is so fresh and creamy. Pizza is served Monday - Tuesday 11AM-2:30 PM, Wednesday - Sunday 11AM - 10PM. I highly suggest coming here on Wednesday or Thursday as they have a fantastic Happy Hour with discounts on drinks and pizza. Great staff and the service was excellent. read more
