I grew up eating Turkish food, so I was really excited to try Mevan Coffee & Breakfast, especially since I'd heard so many great things about it. The food was okay, but nothing stood out. I was most looking forward to the menemen, but it lacked the bold, rich flavors I'm used to. I was also surprised that it wasn't served with simit. Instead, it came with flatbread, which was fine, but it just isn't the same. The rest of the dishes were decent, but overall nothing made me want to come back. What surprised me even more was the service. Based on the reviews, I expected a very warm and welcoming experience. Instead, we walked in and stood at the counter for more than five minutes without anyone acknowledging us. The staff were busy having a personal conversation while another person appeared to be taking photos of them, presumably for social media. That's completely fine, but customers shouldn't be left waiting because of it. To make matters worse, the counter was overflowing with dirty dishes the entire time (see photo). It made the restaurant feel messy and uninviting. Overall, the experience just didn't live up to the hype for me. If you're looking for authentic Turkish flavors and hospitality, this wasn't it. I'll continue my search for a great Turkish breakfast spot. This one was just... meh.
I love this place! I randomly came across it when looking for a cafe to do some computer work at, and I arrived at this spacious cafe in the heart of Hillcrest. It has plenty of seating with big tables, and the lighting is nice and music is not aggressive. They offer lots of delicious snacks and meals. I've tried the menemen scramble which came out sizzling with flatbread to go with it. It was more than enough to share between two people. I also tried the baklava which was flaky and sweet. The little custard cakes in the shape of different fruits also piqued my interest, and I tried a mango custard cake on one of my visits. It was pretty good and light, but it wouldn't be my top thing to get at the place. The real star of the show is the coffee. I went with someone who doesn't like coffee but gave it a try, and they said it changed coffee for them forever. I tried the pistachio latte and it was so good--it was creamy and smooth, and the perfect level of sweetness and flavor. The latte art they do is absolutely incredible too; my friend got an intricate pegasus! The staff there is also super duper friendly and made me feel welcome to stay as long as I wished, and they would come and bring the drinks and food out to us at the table. Will definitely be back again!

Stumbled across this cafe while exploring SD's neighborhoods. And Im so glad that I did. So freaking delicious. One of the best breakfast spots I've had in so long. Salted maple latte was outstanding. Great espresso, smooth. Breakfast dish was eggs, peppers, and tomatoes served on a hot-stone/cast iron. Such a hearty delicious breakfast. I enjoyed every single bite. Next time i'm in the area i'll definitely be stopping by to try some more of their Turkish breakfast plates! Service was warm and friendly. Super cozy/homey interior. 10/10 experience all around!

I love coming here. Everything on the menu is delicious with the best ingredients. The service is thoughtful and welcoming. The decor and ambiance is modern and offers plenty of seating. I come about 4 times a month, it's the best! The owners are also extremely friendly and very hard working. Keep up the great work and definitely come check them out !
Very nice desert and coffee spot! I give it a rare 5 stars. The lay out is local "quaint & comfortable" seating enough for doing work or studing, stoping by as a tourist or based on recomendation. However you get to this location you should find the staff engaging and friendly. After ordering and paying they brougt it to our number flagged table. I decided to break my norm and order a Turkish coffee and cheescake. To start was the best salmon bagel that I have had in a while. I asked for mother natuers mayonnaise; avocado, to add to the messyness of the soft fried egg. A messy hand and many napkis is a must with this combo. I suggest paying the extra to set this menu item at the top. The cheesecake standard that I prefer is a dense New York baked unit with gram cracker crust but I have to say if that was what they had and I ordered it, I would have left out looking pregnant. The bagel is filling by itself, this combo was a hungy-dude meal. The whipped cheesecake they had was simular to a moose, very lite and suttel in taste that worked with the smooth mini- cup of coffee. The coffe was not as strong as I prefer it but the flavor was smooth enough to change the take in your mouth for the next cheeses cake bite, and again and back and forth. The desert windo is a work of art, be sure to experence as many as you can upon return visits.
Discovered this new-ish Turkish coffee shop in Hillcrest on a Friday morning. The menu has both American and Turkish breakfast items and the owners were happy to explain the menu to us (bonus points for all Halal meat!). There is plenty of seating for parties of any size and orders are brought to your table. The food presentation was wonderful. We ordered the chicken Caesar sandwich and the avocado toast, both of which were filling. The owner came to check on every table to make sure everything was okay. There is a wide variety of food and drink, but both are on the pricier side. Overall, a positive experience and looking forward to trying more on the menu.
Visited this new coffee shop/breakfast place located in Hillcrest on a Saturday morning and my party of 2 had a wonderful time. There's a lot of great food on the menu and will have to come back to try out the other items. Parking: Note that with any other Hillcrest establishment, give yourself some time to look for street parking. There's also a paid lot close by. Environment: Cafe style where you order at the register and they bring the food out to you. There are many 2-4 person tables and I saw that there was a party of 8 inside. There are a couple of 2 person tables outside. We opted to sit at the window table overlooking the street. Service: Great hospitality by the person who took our order and served our dishes! Food: -Spanish Latte ($6.50) and Matcha Latte ($6.50) with cute latte art. -Eggs with Beef ($22): served on a sizzle platter; tomato, cucumber, and pita bread on the side. It's my first time having Kavurmah Yumurta and it's so good! Eating just the egg and beef alone tasted very heavy, but the sliced tomato, cucumber, and pita served with it complimented the dish well. -Turkey, Bacon, Egg Sandwich ($14): hanger bun, served with crispy tater tots -Phyllo Cheese Roll ($10): comes with 4 pieces cut in half, so we had more than enough to take home. We loved these savory rolls and similarly to the Eggs with Beef plate, the tomatoes on the side complimented them well.
Mevan Coffee & Breakfast is a new business that took over a Hillcrest suite which was most recently the home of a taqueria that has changed addresses to a La Jolla location. I recently visited to get some dessert after having dinner elsewhere in the neighborhood. Their business hours need to be changed on Yelp as it states a closing time of 10 pm. I found out that they actually close at 9:00 because I was asked to finish while the staff was sweeping the floors and stacking the outside chairs and tables. The inside felt more like a lounge than a cafe with the decor and seating arrangement. Two menu screens hung behind the service counter with the left one listing the beverages and the right one displaying the food offerings. A couple of display cases were at the counter showing off the baked goods and other desserts. Turkish breakfast and pastries (e.g. baklava) were the featured items as there were half a dozen selections in the former category. From the three cold drink choices, I picked the San Diego Sunset. This was sparkling water mixed with lemonade and pomegranate juice. The blend was fruity but not too tart. I do wish that it came in a larger serving size for the eight dollar price. I noticed at least three types of cheesecake in the refrigerated display case. Dragonfruit was what I opted for because I had never seen that ingredient used as a cheesecake flavor. The wedge was thick and creamy, however the dragonfruit wasn't as prominent as it appeared.
Pretty darn good. Lentil soup, Eggs with beef and meneman, and a blackberry dessert to fire for. Oh, and Turkish Coffee too. Super polite folks

Maven absolutely exceeded our expectations! From the moment we ordered, the food came out incredibly fast without sacrificing quality. The pistachio waffle was outstanding--beautifully balanced, not overly sweet, and topped with incredibly fresh fruit that made every bite taste light and refreshing. The lox bagel was hands down the best I've ever had. The lox was exceptionally fresh, the proportions were perfect, and every ingredient tasted high quality. Even the simple cheese omelette was good, crispy tater tots. The drinks were just as impressive. The ube latte was rich, smooth, and absolutely delicious, and my boyfriend couldn't stop talking about how much he loved the Sunset drink. The vibe of the restaurant was great! Solo diners, families, and couples. Everyone seeming to enjoy their meals as much as we did! Great food, quick service, fresh ingredients, and thoughtful flavors throughout the entire meal. This is a super cute and cozy place with warm and welcoming decor. The sturdy leather seat with the small street-facing bar top made me want to drink my coffee a little slower and truly relax. I ordered an iced pistachio latte with ice milk which was exceptional! A good balance of pistachio flavor without feeling like its a syrup. I ordered the Menemen, the Turkish egg&tomato breakfast dish. It came out on a sizzling hot plate and served with really soft pita bread. This was INCREDIBLE, so full of flavor and filling - it was hard to stop eating it. I had to take half home. Its a slightly greasy dish so it doesn't travel as well. I put the pita down on the bottom of the takeaway tray to absorb some of the goodness. I sent a photo to my Turkish friend and she confirmed it was the real deal and even she was craving it through the picture! Staff were incredibly sweet and made my experience even better. The menemen came out on a smoking hot plate. This was excellent for me because I love hot food. The warm spiced flavor was nicely comforting. I always appreciate a cardamom latte, and theirs is delicious. The servers were kind and hospitable. This seems like a nice place to be a regular. There is ample space to hang out with friends or outlets to do work. Parking on this street is $1.50 for 2 hours. I would love to come back for some dessert. read more

WOW!!! What a treat finding this beautifully decorated cafe. Offering stunning pastries and unique dishes like the pistachio waffle. The pastries are other worldly! I had a nice Thanksgiving morning breakfast at this Turkish-American coffee house and cafe. The cafe offers Turkish favorites and main stream favorites, such as the cortado and smoked salmon bagel breakfast I ordered. I had to compliment the barista because she did a super job making my cortado. It was perfect to my liking: well balanced, bold and rich in coffee flavor, yet quite smooth, not to mention beautiful. The smoked salmon bagel came on a toasted everything bagel. The bagel was toasted, but I felt it needed a better toast. The smoked salmon was plentiful and delicious. Although it was not advertised that it came with an egg, the egg was a perfect medium for that nice yolk run and was well seasoned. I was surprised it had an egg. The salmon bagel also came with fresh arugula, tomatoes, and an herb cream cheese spread which was very good. The meal came with a side of non-pitted olives. The service was top notch. It was friendly and super attentive. The cafe offers a lot of comfortable inside seating and some right on the sidewalk. read more
This place is fairly new and has a distinctive menu. Options for coffee, tea, breakfast, and desserts are extensive. I was intrigued by the ube latte and it was quite tasty. New coffee shop that opened a week ago. The owners are cousins from Turkey and they are the kindest people! I went in this morning before work and ordered a pistachio latte - it was perfect! Not very sweet and great flavor. The owners also gave me a "welcome in" ferrero roche chocolate (my favorite). They also treated me to their in house chicken soup, which had amazing flavor. You bet I ate it at 8am because it was such a kind gesture! Please go and support a small business with hard working people! I will be back read more
Mevan is a café restaurant opened recently on Forth and University in Hillcrest. It's walking distance from Scripps Mercy Medical Center. Street parking is a challenge. Have seen this place develop and come to be during before the opening and the results are great. Indoor and outdoor seating, simple decor is casual, very clean, with soft lounge music makes this place very welcoming. Was greeted cordially by owners: Ugor and August who were pleasant, helpful and friendly. There was a display case of colorful sweets, that looked familiar. Turns out, French lacquered desserts from Clément are offered here. Additionally, in house made Mediterranean desserts are also offered. The printed menu was not available, but from the wall listing, the Turkish breakfast caught my attention and curiosity. Presented and plated nicely in a larger plate are small ramekins include: Mediterranean olives, walnuts, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, cubes of feta like cheese, blossom honey, sprigs of mint herb and small edible flowers topped on the eggs all looked seductively appealing, healthy and Delish. The small hot pot of Turkish tea was perfect with Muhallebi, a Turkish pistachio dessert similar to rice pudding was a wonderful treat and generously portioned enough to share! Wow- never have I been to a coffee shop where I felt like I was treated like a member of the family. The staff were especially hospitable, kind, and attentive. The food was spectacular as well. Would highly recommend the menemen, which came out on a sizzling platter; such great savory breakfast flavors. The Belgian waffles were so soft and provided a good balance of sweetness plus the tart flavors of the fruit. The lattes were creamy and rich; the Moroccan mint tea was so refreshing in the heat! They even brought us the freshest watermelon I have ever had to try! The overall vibes/ambiance were relaxed and warm. I love the brick walls, the comfortable seating, and lots of plugs for working. The bathrooms were spacious and clean. 100/10 would recommend. read more

I stopped by this spot on a whim since it was so conveniently located near the medical center. The interior is so cute and was already filled with people during the mid morning. It looks like a comfortable place to set up shot and cowork or catch up with friends. The dessert case looks phenomenal and I love that they offer traditional Turkish breakfast. I was there to grab takeout coffee but I would recommend this spot as a sit down. There's not a lot of coffee spots that offer cardamom latte so I had to order it- not too sweet, and really good. One small quirk though- they only offer 12oz hot and 16oz cold, but unfortunately not 16oz hot to fuel my hot coffee addiction. I would love to see them expand their size offerings to include this read more

We discovered this restaurant like 9 months ago, and every visit has been wonderful. We come for breakfast every other weekend, and food is consistently amazing, service is great, and the restaurant is always very clean. John, in particular, makes us feel like family. We like to be there before 10am because it gets packed. Recommend the mevan plate and the breakfast wrap. read more

Freaking 10/10: has quickly become my go to. The coffee is stupidly good. High quality eveything: staff, customer experience, produce and ingredient quality, creativity of flavors = impeccably well done. Fav dish so far: cheese omelette. Literally how on freaking earth did it never occur to me to separately sauté and put more watery ingredients like peppers on *top* of the omelette after perfectly cooking it?! I do get it w the salad instead of the tots usually (because we love a healthy queen), but the tots are freaking BOMB & the romesco sauce that comes w it is perfection. Pro tip: Will add a side of cold avo next time to any of the omelettes for a topper. The crew there: August, Jordon, John & Lance are so freaking kind and nice & clearly love what they do. While in San Diego for the day we stopped by here for coffee. It is a spacious and clean coffee spot. I really liked the vibe of it. It has some windows in the front of the shop that open up and you can sit there on some really comfortable chairs and enjoy your coffee and people watch all day long. I ordered a cardamom latte and my husband ordered a cappuccino. Both of our drinks were very tasty. The artwork was so beautifully done. Next time we come here we will definitely try some breakfast and some pastries. read more

It's crazy that one single place can do so many things PERFECTLY. Everything I've ever ordered from here (and I come here every week) has been so fresh and so full of quality. Not only are their Turkish breakfast options so amazing, but their chicken wrap is hot, fresh, delicious and packed with flavor, AND their desserts are so good -- on par with the best bakeries in San Diego and I've been to all of them. The menemen is literally sizzling when they bring it out. There is also incredible warm service and such great vibes whether you're eating with others, dining alone or just getting a cup of coffee and tea. read more

They crew here was awesome! The food was to die for and as a self proclaimed coffee snob I was very happy with the latte I was given. I came back and got a mocha and asked about their house bean blend. Cannot recommend them enough! I have the salmon toast and my wife had the Mevan breakfast plate. Both were very good and the portion was just right for the price. They even let me buy some of their whole beans (even though they done normally do that) 10/10 recommend this spot. read more
