We had a tough time finding a place to hang out and kill time in Santa Barbara waiting out traffic before continuing on to LA. We tried multiple other places that didn't have outdoor seating (so not dog friendly), but then we found Caje on State Street. It's on a protected set of streets where there are lots of shops and stores. There's common outdoor seating just outside the store, which met our objective of hanging out with the dog. Granted it was a hot day, but this store was really really hot inside, like unpleasantly so. I felt bad for the barista! The coffee is reasonably priced, all things considered (fancy flavors, Santa Barbara, crowded location) and the flavor was nice and not one I've personally had before. I asked to go light on the ice and they did a good job there. The wait was a bit long, but we weren't in a hurry, so it was all fine. Good place to stop and relax and have a good tasting coffee. read more

Our group of four stopped by this location as a nice break from our downtown shopping on State st. We were the only patrons in there so we were assisted right away. The location is nice, but it felt really hot inside. The space is small so there's not much seating inside, but they have a small outdoor seating area out front and additional seating options around the corner. They were almost out of pastries so we split their last two croissants amongst the four of us. The croissants were probably my favorite part of the visit. Most of our group seemed to be okay with their coffee choices, but overall no one was overly enthusiastic about their drink so we'd say it's about average. I ordered the iced chai latte and it was probably the worst drink I've had at a coffee shop. It was pretty much a big glass of milk with some chai spices mixed in. Very disappointing. I ended up throwing most of it away. Their staff was okay, but nothing stood out about their service so the experience here overall was pretty mediocre at best. read more

We're traveling with our dog and looking for a cafe with outdoor seating a little after 4pm. We noticed that Caje had multiple locations and some of them closed early. We went to the Haley St location first only to find out that they didn't have any outdoor seating. Some folks posted pictures of their other locations under the Haley St listing by mistake. :-( We then drove to this location, which fortunately wasn't too far away. It did take a while to find parking, though. It's a small shop with limited seatings and it felt rather hot inside while waiting for our drinks. They were quite busy, and there's only one guy preparing the drinks while another person took our orders. On the other hand, it's cool and shady in the spacious outdoor seating area of Paseo Nuevo, which was right outside the store. I had a small Iced Rose Matcha Latte with 2% milk. The beetroot powder and rose petals on top looked pretty but the Matcha taste wasn't strong enough. Our daughter had a small Iced Hibiscus Tea with Lemonade, which she said was just ok. I had a sip of my husband's large iced Salted Pecan Latte with light ice and almond milk and it was a bit too sweet for me. If we're in the area earlier next time, I would rather try their other Signature drinks at their Arlington St location, which appeared to have a beautiful courtyard as well. read more

I'm being generous about giving this shop a 2 star, only because I feel bad about giving them a 1 star. The people that work here are nice, I just don't think anyone knows how to make any of the drinks the right way. I've had plenty of bad coffee drinks in my life, but here, they just seem to be handing out cups of only milk. We were taking a break at the plaza next to the shop, and decided to get 3 large coffees, 2 iced caramel lattes and one salted pecan latte. The drinks looked off, but we didn't question it, until we tried it. It was just a large cup of iced cold milk. I see other people mention the same issue. It was the worst cup of coffee I've had in a long time. It went straight in the trash, and we ended up getting McConnell's Ice Cream across the street instead. read more

It is really easy to swoon over the magical drink choices here, and not get something so plain like a coffee or cocoa. But everything caje does is excellent. I'm very picky about coffee and don't say that lightly, but this is hands down one of the best iced vanilla lattes I've ever had. You can tell everything is fresh. They use quality beans and even make their own syrups, which makes a huge difference. I wish I had something like this where I live because I would be there all the time. The caramel macadamia nut whipped cream was amazing, and the chocolate banana flavor profile of the coffee was so delicious. Not an artificial banana flavor at all. The Yemen was also great. Not as sweet, but if you are a true coffee aficionado, you'll appreciate this drink. The almond croissants were possibly some of the best we've ever had. We stopped here during our road trip, excited to finally try the Bella Rose Matcha after seeing all the dreamy promo photos--rose petals, a fresh strawberry, elegant glassware, the full aesthetic. What I got instead? A plastic to-go cup with iced matcha and a sprinkle of beet powder. No rose petals. No strawberry. No presentation. (See attached.) When I politely asked where the rose petals were, the barista seemed visibly annoyed and just said they had "run out." No apology, no heads-up at the time of ordering. I mentioned the drink didn't look anything like the photos, and he responded that this location only does to-go orders and doesn't serve anything the way it's advertised. Nowhere on the menu or website does it say that--which honestly feels deceptive. To make things worse, while we waited, two of the barista's friends came by and hovered near the counter like they were customers, but it was clear they hadn't actually ordered anything. Normally, I wouldn't care, but it was already taking 10-15 minutes to get our drinks and he seemed fully caught up chatting with them while preparing orders. I get that they probably had a crazy morning rush (it seemed never-ending), but in that moment he seemed distracted and disengaged--and when he announced our drinks and I asked about the missing rose petals, it felt dismissive and unprofessional. My sister ordered a vanilla latte that had a cute heart in the foam, and my mom got a chai latte with cinnamon around the rim--it looked and smelled amazing. They both got everything bagels; my sister's had roasted veggies on it. I got a blueberry muffin, which was solid. The female staff were genuinely sweet and welcoming, so props to them for keeping a warm vibe going despite the chaos. The real letdown was the atmosphere. There was nowhere clean to sit. The only usable table was in the mall corridor, and I had to lay down napkins over a fresh puddle of dog pee just to sit. Every other table was dirty or taken. We were traveling with our pup and just wanted a calm, decent breakfast before another long drive, and this was not the vibe. The drinks and food tasted fine, but the whole experience felt scattered, unwelcoming, and nothing like what's advertised online. If you're coming for the aesthetic or a relaxing café moment, don't go to this location. Try a different branch--or seriously manage your expectations. We definitely wish we had. read more

I walked into Caje Coffee expecting a warm, welcoming coffee shop experience--and instead, I was met with the opposite. Two female employees were busy chit-chatting and tearing open boxes behind the counter, while the one male barista barely acknowledged me with a lazy "we'll be with you," all while making a drink. Not exactly the energy of people who want to serve customers. When I finally got someone's attention, there was no greeting--just a flat "What can I get you?" I asked if they carry ceremonial grade matcha, and they stared at me like I'd asked for something absurd. If you offer matcha on your menu, your staff should at least know the basics. I tried to explain the difference between ceremonial and culinary (baking) grade matcha, but instead of listening, the male employee looked at me and snapped, "I didn't hear your question," with a tone that was beyond rude. At that point, I was done. I simply said "Never mind" and walked out. I've never been treated with such ignorance and attitude in a coffee shop before. The staff seriously need training in both product knowledge and basic human decency. Do better, Caje. read more

Such a cool spot for coffee! The patio is gorgeous, the workers are super friendly and fun and the drinks and food are wonderful! First off, I found this spot online and saw they had a praline latte so I headed over there to try it out. When I got there I was informed It isn't actually called the praline latte, they now call it a burnout and that it isn't made to go because it's a whole experience. Ok, you really shouldn't be mad about sitting down in this space to drink your coffee and eat your brekkie since it's so beautiful. My partner and I took a seat on a bench, but it was a bit chilly so we ended up over by the fireplace. When we finally got our drinks we were shocked at how cute they were! My partner also ordered the almond croissant which was delicious and I ordered the sweet toast which has almond butter, honey, strawberries and blackberries! Such a sweet spot! My friend and I made the horrible decision of trying another breakfast spot, and ended up wishing we just came to this spot again.
