They were literally inedible. My kids (who are sugar addicts) both spit their bites out. I've never seen them do that with any cupcake or cake. This is my favorite bakery! I used to order all the different cakes (a lot) until I was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Their Pop tarts are insanely good, I am partial to the chocolate almond one, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. service is fantastic, so friendly and helpful and really knows their products. I absolutely love the products at Cake Monkey and try to order there for special occasions. However, for Father's Day, I ordered almost $100 in cakes for the men in our family and EVERY CAKE melted into a puddle before I got home with them. All we did was stop at the grocery store on the way home, and the cakes were ruined. We had no warnings that the cakes needed immediate refrigeration. I called the bakery to inquire and complain but they made no effort to correct or remedy the situation. I don't expect such poor customer service when paying such a huge mark-up for quality products. read more

I really wanted to try this place out after having some of their cake at a local cafe. Drove an hour out of our way to get here and paid over $45 for 4 mini cakes and it was just disappointing. Recently stopped by this bakery on the way to celebrate a friend's birthday and I was glad I did! Cake Monkey Bakery had these perfectly sized Mini Layer Cakes with plenty of flavors to choose from (with gluten-free and also nut-free options). We decided on the Triple Berry Crumble Cake and the traditional Confetti Cake. Overall, the sizes were absolutely perfect for those who just want to try it, but not have too much. Such a great sampler size to share with a small group of people. The cakes were reasonably priced and had the perfect ratio of frosting to cake so essentially you got frosting with every bite. The cake was moist and not dry at all. Our favorite was definitely was the Triple Berry Crumble Cake, you MUST try it! Personally, a 4/5 for me cause it was a bit too sweet for my taste buds, but everything else was spot on! They were able to provide us with candles and cute cake banners/toppers for a decent price. Parking was not bad, found a metered spot right in front. In and out within 5-minutes. BONUS! They sell a bunch of other bakery treats other than these fabulous cakes. One of my colleagues was raving about this 'blink and you'll miss it' bakery over on Beverly, and as soon as I passed the little pink storefront, there was no way I was missing this. He was going full-on about the cookies, and as bad as this sounds to some, he and I favor cookies FULL OF gluten. Yes, you read that right. But when he visited, they only had gluten-free options, and he was given those complimentary since they were out of the regular variety. Now here's what surprised me: he rather enjoyed these. Based on the kind of flour used, this specific cookie didn't taste like the other gluten-free brands that claim to taste good (when they don't). These would have been close to the real deal, had he not known they were GF. Now as for me, I show up on a day when they DO have these 'Summer Camp Chocolate Chip Cookies' (rice krispie treat somehow involved with marshmallow=wow) at $2.75 each so I make sure I grab two for us, but I was also swayed by the 'Peanut Butter & Marshmallow Cakewich' along with the 'Black & White Cakewich' at $3.75 each. I gave into the the PB cakewich on the way back and this was a little bit of a letdown. I had read the menu online prior and this was the one item I was looking forward to. Now I will say since I wasn't sitting properly eating this where I could fully unwrap the foil (I always screw up foil packaging where it breaks off unevenly and I cannot just peel it off in one try), the cake literally crumbled where I probably have 1/2 of it floating in the car seat somewhere. I'm sure I also ingested some foil during this time as well. But the cookie was pretty darn good. I liked it enough where I'm glad I tried it, but I can also sit here next to the saved one for him and have no desire to dig into this one as well. read more

The salted caramel cake (with carmelized rice krispies) was hands down one of the best cakes I have ever put in my mouth. Perfect balance of salty, creamy, crunchy, moist heavenly bliss. They also made a deliciously edible birthday banner to go on top YAY THIS. Great touch. I've been going to the bakery three days in a row now. I'm so happy they opened a store near my house. Now I can have all the cakes and cookies and sweet goodies that I love without having to hunt them at Umami, or UCLA Royce Hall bar. Love love love their stuff. Colleen and Gilly (Gillian? Jillian?) are super nice and they were so sweet to let me have my full fangirl freak out moment when I first stepped into the store. The stuff I love are listed on the Yelp tips. But my most absolute favorite since the beginning of time would have to be their Lil Merri's. I've also bought the Roll in the Hay (happy crispy surprises inside), Vanilla Sprinkles mini cake was okay, Pecan Dacquoise mini cake is so smooth and buttery and super the bomb! I didnt quite like the seasonal Cider Apple Pie so much cause I'm not a huge fan of apple cider, but the double cheddar crust was most certainly interesting. Coming back tonight to pick up the pumpkin and butterscotch pudding pies I've put on hold. Coming back tomorrow for their cinammon monkey bread. This used to be my favorite bakery. Very pricey, but worth it. The idea of individual mini-cakes is magical...a whole little cake for me and you get your own 'cause I don't share. Their cake used to be soft and the frosting creamy, but recently, they've done something to the cake that doesn't allow it to get soft and the frosting is almost like fondant. I despise fondant...it is not frosting...it is playdoh. Whatever they add makes the dessert hold up well, but it never gets soft and creamy - even after an hour sitting on my kitchen counter. I suspect that business is down a bit so they have to keep things fresh for a longer period of time, so adding something to stretch shelf life is a necessary evil. For their prices though, I want what I want, so I have to let them go for now. I am very sad. read more

Holy shit! Get the pudding cake. What the hell is in this thing? It's dense, dark chocolate cake with pudding, a white marshmallow type thing, chocolate discs and who knows what other magic. It's INSANE and really one of LA's finest desserts. I love all the stuff here, including the highly decadent gluten free cookies. You would never, ever know they were gluten free. The cakes here are excellent. My wife surprised me with a quarantine birthday cake from here. She knows my standards for cake - they are VERY high. Since birth, I was indoctrinated by a sweet toothed grandmother to love sweets and only accept the best. This definitely pasts muster. She ordered a 6 inch malted chocolate cake that camp with a beautiful madeline cookie Happy Birthday ribbon to place on top. The seemingly small, but dense cake was 4 layers high and could easily have fed 8-10 people and still have leftovers. The flavors were exactly as I like. Cake had some density and wasn't too light or airy; you needed your fork to do some work to get thru it all. The flavors weren't pure sweet; there was some depth to all the vanilla, chocolate layers. But more than the flavor of the cake, I was wowed by its presentation. It looked simply elegant. It was more beautiful than our wedding cake of a decade or so ago. Simple, beautiful placement of the malted, colored balls around the iced chocolate cake. Just gorgeous. I must say I was gravely disappointed :( I used to get cake monkey cakewiches from the Umami Burger on La Brea ALL the time before they closed that location. My fave was the raspberry red velvet cakewich (a mini double-decker red velvet cupcake with a light and tangy raspberry jam/ cream in the middle, all covered with a thin jacket of dark chocolate)... which I remember to be so moist and and rich without being too sweet. A recent trip to Umami burger made me feel nostalgic about cakewiches. Since they didn't sell Cake Monkey products at that location, they recommended I visit the store front. When I did, my sweet tooth naturally enticed me to purchase a few items more than I probably should've-- all very pretty and decorative, but not as tasty as I remember. Both cakewiches (red velvet and black & white) very dry, and the almond croissant was rather dense as opposed to light and fluffy. Maybe I'll give it another try in the future, but no serious yearnings to return for now. read more
