    Custom retirement cake
    Christina M.

I ordered a chocolate cake, my dad's absolute favorite, for his retirement with a simple idea to make it tailored to the occasion. I was seriously wow'd when I saw the finished product. The final touches Navi added to the cake blew my expectations out of the water and made my dad's retirement celebration that much more special! The cake was just perfect in every way -- tasted delicious and was designed beautifully. Thank you, Navi!

Hands down, the best cake! I ordered a chocolate cake for my daughter's birthday. I wanted something simple, but somehow to have not one particular princess themed, but ALL of them. The cake looked amazing and was absolutely delicious! For sure I will order again from Navi!

Meant to yelp about these amazing cookies for my son's tee ball team months ago. It was our turn to provide snacks and I wanted to outdo the others so I ordered Angels baseballs and baseball glove cookies and they were exactly what I wanted. I just sent her a picture and she was able to create what I wanted. They were soft moist and delicious. All the other baseball moms were jealous of our snacks. I'm definitely be ordering from her again.

Navi is absolutely AMAZING!! My best friend and I have both been obsessed with Navi's divinely delicious treats for many years now. Her strawberry cake is hands down my favorite and has always been a huge hit with anyone whose ever tried it. Anytime, we have any special occasion we always ask Navi to make something out of this world for us. Navi never disappoints! Navi made both my 30th bday with a massive 6 layer rainbow cake & my best friends 30th - Game of Thrones themed cake that were both absolutely fabulous! If I could give 10 stars I would!

Navi created a beautiful and delicious two tiered naked cake and matching chocolate covered strawberries for my baby shower. The cake was so beautiful and classic, decorated with fresh flowers. We ordered coconut for the top layer and vanilla for the bottom layer. Both the cake the strawberries were such a hit with the guests. Navi is also great to work with, she is so responsive and accommodating. Can't wait to work with her again the the future!

    My dad's cake- thanks, Navi!

With my father's 90th birthday party approaching, I found Cakes by Navi by googling "Cusom Cakes in Costa Mesa area", and liked the reviews & pictures on Yelp. When she & I spoke, Navi was very helpful. I texted her a "drawing" of what I wanted, and she was able to design the exact cake I wanted, despite the horrid artwork I sent her. For the three tiers, we had cookies 'n cream w/chocolate mousse filling for the top, the middle tier was carrot cake w/cream cheese filling, and the bottom cake was marble w/raspberry mousse filling. I had the marble cake while my husband had the carrot cake- both were flavorful and moist. I didn't get the chance to try the top layer- I had asked the servers at the restaurant to carry a tray with slices of all three, offering guests a choice. By the time a server arrived at our table, he told me that the cookies 'n cream cake was requested by many of the younger party-goers. (I did ask some of them at the Sunday brunch the next day how the cake was, and they all loved it!) Delivery was on-time (a BIG worry of mine), & Navi texted me when delivery was completed. All-in-all, I was thrilled with the entire process of ordering a cake from her, & all the comments given by family and friends were positively glowing. Thanks, Navi, for giving my dad a sweet 90th party!

My husband was a wicked sweet tooth and after we ordered some food across the lot, he was being pulled by the siren song of the illuminated Dots Cupcakes sign from across the way. We made our way over and the lovely manager Iva was kind enough to stay late to make sure we got our cupcakes! She was so warm and gracious and helped us pick out the perfect assortment of tasty cakes, I seriously think we got one of each flavor they had left! Every single flavor we sampled was delicious, moist, and packed with flavor. And not overly sweet, which is the best compliment I can give ;) We can't wait to come back and see Iva and hopefully sample some coffee next time and whatever other new flavors they roll out (they have new flavors all the time!) Thanks so much Iva and Dots! We will be back soon.

I hate to be a negative Nancy because I love desserts and always love to give little shops their dues but unfortunately not this place. I had to run into the ups store next door so decided to stop in this cute little cupcake shop and bring home dessert. I bought 6 "Regular" sized cupcakes for $28! $28 for 6 ACTUAL little tiny cupcakes. They look like minis but are not. It seems like they were trying to make them super moist but all that moisture made the cupcake attach itself to the wrapper. Truly took away half the cupcake. (See photos) also because of this forced "moistness" it made the cupcake very dense. The icing is your typical sugary icing (not my fav) but understand most people like it. Save yourself the $28 and buy your cupcakes from Ralph's bakery. So much better tasting, bigger and cheaper unfortunately. I am giving this place two stars rather than one because of the very sweet young girl at the counter that was helpful and kind.

They were busy with a lot of Mother's Day weekend rush, but the staff was friendly to everyone with big smiles and they were moving the line along as quickly as possible. I picked up my usual favorite slices: Carrot Cake Slice ($8.49), Tropical Coconut Slice ($8.99), and Old-Fashioned Chocolate Slice ($8.99). They were moist and delicious! Sometimes, the Tropical Coconut can be slightly dry, but it was perfectly moist when I had it this past weekend. They had a really cute May 4th Grogu cake on display and I just think that they not only make delicious cakes, but their cake decorating skills are on point! SusieCakes is worth the splurge!

After waiting for someone to help me, I walk up to the counter and ask if it was possible to pick up a cake that I ordered. The result was the male sales representative with a beard rolling their eyes and yelling at me - what's the last name! I'm positive Mothers Day is a very busy day for you all, but no one should be on the receiving end of that type of sass from anyone, especially after paying close to $100 for a 6" inch cake. It definitely killed the excitement for the gender reveal with this cake tainted with attitude.

While the cake design looked great at first glance, I cannot recommend this business given the $400 price tag for a 6-inch cake. The design is "pretty," but it is misleading. Almost all the decorations were non-edible plastic ornaments, paper printouts, and pre-made models rather than handcrafted sugar work or fondant. For this price, I expected artisanal craftsmanship, not a collection of plastic balls and paper toppers. Once you strip away the non-edible parts, you are left with a basic chiffon cake that tastes no different from a $40 cake at a standard Asian bakery. The massive markup seems to be for the "styling" of plastic toys rather than the actual baking or artistry. It felt like paying a premium for a cake that I had to "disassemble" just to eat.

After leaving lunch nearby, I passed by the Newport Beach location and decided it was finally time to give it a try. First impressions were honestly really good. Parking was super easy because they have an open lot, which immediately made the experience less stressful. The bakery itself is also really pretty inside. It has that classic, clean bakery aesthetic that feels warm and inviting without being overly trendy. Everything looked fresh and well displayed, and the atmosphere definitely gave "treat yourself after lunch" energy. The staff was also very friendly and welcoming when I came in. One thing I genuinely liked was that they cut the cake slices fresh in front of you instead of having them prepackaged and sitting out. It made everything feel fresher and a little more personalized, which I appreciated. I decided to try the funfetti cake because I feel like that's such a classic flavor and usually a pretty safe choice. It's simple, nostalgic, and honestly hard to mess up. Unfortunately, this just wasn't for me. The biggest issue for me was the texture. The cake itself was very dense and heavier than I expected. I usually like funfetti cake to feel soft, fluffy, and light, especially paired with buttercream frosting, but this one felt more compact and rich than I personally prefer. The icing also had a grainy texture that really stood out to me. I'm not sure if that's just their style of frosting, but it didn't have the smooth, creamy texture I usually look for in cake frosting. That being said, if you like a denser, richer style of cake, this honestly might be the perfect bakery for you. It just personally is not my preference. I tend to prefer lighter cakes with smoother frosting, so I think this came down more to taste and texture preferences than the bakery doing anything "wrong." Flavor-wise, it wasn't terrible by any means, but it just didn't wow me, especially considering how much I've heard people rave about SusieCakes. I kept comparing it in my head to Magnolia Bakery, which for me personally has softer cake texture and frosting that I enjoy a lot more. That said, I still think the bakery itself is worth visiting at least once because the customer service was great, the space was beautiful, and the experience overall was pleasant. I just personally didn't enjoy the actual cake as much as I hoped I would. Overall, I'd probably come back to try a different flavor before fully writing the place off, but based on the funfetti slice alone, it wasn't my favorite.

The self service, pre-made lunch bentos, sandos and sushi area is fine, but once you need assistance from a worker, it starts getting ridic. How so? You speak to whomever is attempting to assist you OVER and UNDER a twenty-four year old counter area that holds the pastries and/or through a tiny hole in the cabinets. You can hardly make eye contact with the person, because all the pastry is in between where you are standing and where they are standing. Some people are tall, some short, but regardless, there is NO WAY to have a conversation with them. They are trying to see what exactly you are possibly pointing to in the case, but as noted, you're talking thru a case of pastry. This is also true at the Fountain Valley location, where they only have a very small counter to check out with many people standing in line trying to have someone collect their order from the back. Maybe also ask WHY there is never any KINAKO donuts? I was there at 11 am and I got THE LAST ONE! If these are so popular, why don't you make enough to sell throughout the day? Every other time I've been here, you were already SOLD OUT! SMH HAS ANYONE HERE SEEN THE SELF SERVICE process at 85 degrees? All their pastry is individually wrapped and you calmly walk through the SELF SERVICE pastry area with a tray and tongs to help yourself. If you'd like to pass the person in front of you, it's easy and doable because there is plenty of room and it doesn't make anyone feel like you are taking "cuts". Once you get to the end, the cashier totals up your tray and puts it in a bag or box for you. Done & Done. Let me reiterate that your pastry and food are all above par and I know you've been in business since 2002 and let me commend you for 24 years of service, but it's time to CHANGE IT UP to a more user friendly process. It's not appealing to anyone in this busy day and age that there is a line out the door, ONLY BECAUSE THE PROCESS INSIDE NEEDS HELP! It's also more sanitary that the pastry and breads are wrapped ahead of time as I saw a fly inside the case today. Ugh.
