They've been a DMV staple for years and have built a solid reputation in the community. They've since moved into a much larger space, but they're still in Laurel and in the same shopping center. The new location is bright, clean, and has plenty of room to browse their cakes and baking supplies. The cake and cupcakes were fresh, moist, and exactly what I expected. I've tried their German Chocolate cupcake and I enjoyed it - it was rich, moist, and flavorful. They have a great selection of other flavors and seem to have a good variety of party and food decorations. The space is large and clean. Parking is easy! This place has potential but they could improve on their customer service and the floor space design. Overall, I'd recommend! I was in the area and decided to give Cake Plus a try. Will not return. There were two women working behind the case - one tall and one shorter. The shorter (working the cake side) was authentically pleasant and friendly. The taller (working the cupcake side) was not - fake nice and barely able to hide her impatience. That aside, I purchased a dozen cupcakes that cost $52.25 and they were not worth the money AT ALL. The buttercream and cream cheese frostings were good but the vanilla and red velvet cakes were flavorless. I love the cupcakes at Cakes Plus! The cupcake display case has some many delicious options it makes it challenging to decide which ones to buy. Some of the cupcakes are special and cost $4.50 each. I had heard of Cakes Plus from a few people and so decided to finally try it. I don't think I have obscenely high expectations for cupcakes, but i just couldn't really get into the flavors I tried, especially asking for some of their bestsellers. I had the carrot cake, peach cobbler, vanilla toffee, and lemon with buttercream. Unfortunately they were all quite underwhelming to me, just tasted like sugar without much other flavors as anticipated by the named ingredients. The store also sells fresh ingredients for baking and general baking supplies though, so it is somewhat of a one stop shop for those that also like to personally bake. I've been going to Cakes Plus for years now. I was planning a anniversary event for my job and we needed gifts for our clients. Our first plan didn't work out and I thought of Cakes Plus. I called them on a Friday afternoon and spoke to someone and I led them know I needed this order by the following Monday evening. The nice young lady assures me they can have them ready by then. I am writing this in disappointment, as I have been using Cakes Plus for my birthday and other special events for over 15 years. This year, I hit a milestone - I turned 40, and by default, I emailed/called Cakes Plus to make an order. I ordered 2 cakes, and when I called to make the order, the 1st cake pic I sent via email 2 days prior had Hennessy bottles on it. When I called and placed my order, the young lady on the phone told me to bring the Hennessy bottles 48 hours in advance before the cakes needed to be picked up. The cakes needed to be picked on 4/19. Therefore, I attempted to drop off the Hennessy bottles on Thurs. Upon my arrival, I spoke to an older woman, and she told me, 'Oh, they don't do that here. The new girl that you spoke to--she's new and she doesn't know--but I'll hold on to the bottles for you, just in case if they do put them on. If they don't, you'll pick them back up when the cakes are ready." 4/19 comes, and my friend comes to deliver the cakes to the venue. She was given the Henny bottles, and she was told not to put the cakes in a seat belt or on the back seat of her car and to put them in the trunk. She follows the instructions and is on her way to deliver the cakes to the venue. When she opened a trunk, upon discovery, my cake (not the ones requiring the Henny bottles) had the icing fall off on 2 sides. She called me hysterical and crying. I immediately emailed Cakes Plus and alerted them to what happened, and I received a response that stated, "Oh no! I am so sorry that happened. Does she know who gave her the cake so I can verify what was said"? I responded immediately and said, "I don't have a name, but she had a white T-shirt on, was Caucasian, and had dark black hair, and was young. Probably mid-30s" (with a picture of the cake attached). I never received a response. I responded back on 4/22 and stated, "Good morning. I never got a response Saturday." I received NO response. I responded back later that day and stated, "Even with the hiccup that I had last week, I was told to bring the Hennessy bottles on Thursday, and they would put them on a cake, just to come to find out. They never put them on the cake. They told me the person who said that was a new girl." - Today is 4/28/2025, and I still have not received a response. I will NEVER order from them again. read more

Cakes Plus moved locations over a year ago and moved down the street to a bigger space. I used to frequent their old location but have only been to this new location a few times. I'm so happy for their expansion. The cupcakes remain delicious, and it looks like they expanded their dessert selection as well. I came to order a cake and got a couple cupcakes for myself because... why not? Lol. They had already made cakes, and there were a few 8x2 cakes available. This was a good cake! And the cupcakes were just as good. We placed an order for a birthday cake and cupcakes for our 70s get down birthday party. When we arrived we were given instructions on how to keep the items as our party wasn't until the next day. When the guest got the cupcakes they all loved them. We didn't cut into the actual cake until the next day (day 3 from picking it up) - the cake was moist and not too sweet. Overall we had a great experience and enjoyed everything we got. The cake shop is very big and offers a nice variety of desserts for special occasions. Staff was extremely nice and the pickup process was easy with no issues. Unfortunately we paid $100 for a gluten free half sheet marble cake and it was terrible. The cake was so dry and the icing could have been sweeter to make up for the dryness. I couldn't even finish a slice it was so awful. Much better off going to Wegmans Whole Foods or Costco. This place is terrible overrated and over priced. read more

Only one vanilla flavored cake out of about 13 cakes on display. l asked if she could go to the back to ask for vanilla and in a not so pinky decor. She said the decorators were working and I could go and come back later. What guarantee would i have to get a vanilla if i did that? None she said. I offered to pay to have them put one of the designs for the day on a cake and aside for me and that I could come back in 1-3 hours for it. She tells me she can't. I asked why? she starts yelling about how everybody is so overworked and extremely busy and trying so hard. My brain had 1000 questions like "Why not stop taking orders?" "why not tell walk-ins who call that you don't have the hands to handle orders?" "why not take orders that match your Capacity?" I settled for a cake I did not like cos it was the only Vanilla. she asked what color for the inscription. l asked her to ask the decorator to use her judgment. It came back with a white inscription on white background and very crooked font. she showed it to me with glee. I told her I could not read it. She went back and wrote over it in blue-green. Everything now looked like my arthritic grandma wrote it. So, last year some cake maker sent me a cake for my birthday. It was delicious and the design was beautiful. She is more expensive but I don't need to add an exasperated biz owner or employee with bad tone who can't manage intake and is trying to make me look insane because I asked for vanilla to my management list. We have patronized this business for many years. We love the cupcakes and the cakes. The cakes are always moist and delicious and they do not dry out over time. Of course, we never have any cake left past 5 days. LOL! I have purchased cakes for various birthdays, including my own. I've even purchased a large order of cupcakes for when family visits. I normally call about a week in advance to place my order. For my sweet tooth cravings, I stop in and get a cupcake or two. Well, that is my intent. I usually leave out with about 4 cupcakes. I love their vanilla cupcakes with the white icing. I also love that they have special flavors of the month. The flavors are always random so you'll need to go into the store to see what's available. We ordered the cake in store with a consultant. The were unapologetic. The wedding was taking place in another state, we had a flight in less than 2 hours. They wanted to give us a cake that was in the display. This was a special order wedding cake. The lady we dealt with was rude, told us to calm down. The only person who tried to solve the problem was the baker. She stated she needed at least three hours to make another cake. They refunded us the $105.00 for the cake. We had to change our flight to accommodate thier mistake. That was expensive! We sent a letter to cake plus asking for some sort of reimbursement. The focus here is delivering quality with exceptional customer service versus elaborate packaging with subpar goods and crummy service. The storefront is simple, but not indicative of their ability. We (my friends and family) have used them to create modest sweets to more elaborate custom cakes. I called a few days ago, wanting something for a graduation celebration on Saturday.
