This is going to be a two part review of Cal Plumbing and Heating. The first part is a short, quick recommendation while Part 2 explains, in depth, the rationale behind Part 1. Part 1: Cal Plumbing & Heating was extremely punctual, professional, and cost effective on two separate occasions. The owner personally came and worked on my furnace fixing it in short order. When I had to subsequently replace the unit, his employee was equally efficient and professional. My experience with other companies was not good (see part 2), so I was extra cautious with Cal. He delivered and I cannot recommend his company more highly. Part 2: When our furnace originally started blowing only cold air, we contacted a company via Angie's for service. They came the next day, identified the problem and told us the part would take 10 days and the repair would cost $650. We waited, with only a space heater for warmth, until they returned to install the part ten days later. This technician, different than the original one, seemed uncertain about what he was doing, spending a great deal of time on his phone asking questions about the install. After more than an hour, he told us that he was going to have to take both the old and new parts back to the shop for troubleshooting. Hearing nothing the next day, my wife called later in the afternoon to find out when we might have heat. She was told that they were quite busy and wouldn't get to troubleshooting until the following week and it would be okay if "she found someone else". That is when we called Cal Plumbing and Heating. The owner himself arrived the next morning, assessed the problem, and said the missing part, which our first company still had at their shop, had likely "fried the motherboard". Now we needed two parts! He said he had them both at his shop and could put them in that afternoon for $250. We enthusiastically agreed. That evening we had heat for the first time in 12 days. The next morning, however, the furnace once again provided only cold air. A call to Cal had a replacement company, Cal was vacationing for the Christmas holidays, at our door the following morning. Yet another part had gone bad, this time to the tune of $450. The new company fixed it, but expressed concern over the gas valve, just about the only original part remaining, and suggested we replace it to reduce the delay in the heat cycle. We declined and enjoyed heat for the rest of the day and into the next. Alas, the furnace once again stopped producing heat. We chose to wait until Cal returned from his vacation to address this new issue. When he arrived, he confirmed that the gas valve was creating problems and needed to be replaced. At this point, he counseled us that the heat exchanger also had significant build-up/corrosion. He said it could last another two years, but might only last two months, and suggested it might be a good time to replace the 38 year-old furnace. While it was almost ten times the original repair, we agreed to having him install a new, modern, efficient unit in two days time. He arrived with a second technician, well within the target time range we had arranged, and immediately got to work. The tech worked a little over an hour to remove the old unit and install the new, making adaptations to the duct work in the process, while cleaning as he went. Cal returned at the end of the install to ensure all worked as promised and answer any questions we might have about warranty's or unit function. We couldn't be happier with our new furnace and the service we received from Cal Plumbing and Heating. Had Cal returned after the furnace failed a second time, I believe we would have had the discussion about replacing the unit at that time rather than later, but that was a decision influenced by a lack of heat during the holidays. read more

Our toilet was constantly running the water due to the overflow tube being broken at bottom of tube. Saw Cal working at neighbor's home and asked him to take a quick look. He did and quoted me a fair price and left. I called back later (after checking other companies in the area who turned out to be a rip-off) and set up an appointment. William came on 30May2020 with the needed parts and sorted it out in no time at all. Showed me the broken part and the rebuilt toilet works great now. When the water heater needs fixing, I know who to call!!! Fast and quick response on Yelp messaging, followed by text update on the technician's arrival, makes it very easy to get the right person for the job. David, the technician was actually 12 minutes early to the appointment and he was ready to get to work! Experience is so valuable to be able to do the job right, and David certainly showed it. He was able to troubleshoot the gas leak and able to use his ingenuity to handle the problem. His explanation was helpful to me, for my piece of mind. He was even able to upgrade the old gas valve in what seemed to me to be an impossible task. But, he was able to proceed and was victorious!!! Alas! A conundrum faced us!!! The propane gas tank went empty!!! But, I was able to get an emergency delivery and the gas man was able to verify that David's job was perfect. (Funny thing the gas man had to do. He had to "bleed" the gas line. For almost two minutes, he had to let out air that was in the gas line. Because it was cold, and the line was so far from the tank, it took a while! It made a high pitch whistle and the entire house smelled like garlic!!! But he double checked for leaks and there was none!) Great job David! And thanks to Cal Plumbing! We've got hot water and we can now take a nice long hot shower!!! read more

We got a new stove, but it stuck out several inches and hit our dishwasher. We hired Dave to relocate our natural gas valve behind the stove. Dave took careful measurements, provided a clear quote, and had the valve moved in no time. Initially used through my brother. The plumber Dave is amazing. The business and owner fails to meet customer requests. If you need a receipt for work be sure to get it at the time of service. I have made multiple attempts because I am a renter and needed it for the landlord but every time I've reached out recently I've been ignored. Too bad it's too difficult to email fax or even put a receipt in an envelope put a stamp on it and put it in the mail just to please a customer. We had a small pin hole leak in a copper water pipe inside a kitchen cabinet. David from Cal Plumbing came out within a few hours and fixed the pipe. Turns out we had a really old pressure regulator on the house and the pressure was way too high! He came back the next day to replace the pressure regulator. I also have a separate water line for the yard and that was not pressure regulated at all. 150 psi on those lines...just asking for trouble. David dug a hole to install a heavy duty regulator and a nice service box. His plumbing work was top notch, very professional and left everything nice & clean for us. They scheduled me fast, we're great communicators and east to understand, David showed up on time and fixed my issues (I hope, am reviewing him now since he was so good, but time will tell in next couple of days) and didn't try to upsell me anything. Dave Ont came each time and was friendly, knowledgeable, explained everything, was efficient and cleaned up after himself. I was very glad to have someone who was able to fix both a heat pump system and a plumbing issue with the same tech, and all very promptly. There was an issue caused by a previous company and they came right out and took care of it even though it wasn't really their fault. We were unlucky ones to be assigned Cal Plumbing & Heating for the plumbing issues we were facing. Issues - Garbage Disposal not working and Hot Water knob for tub was broken. The technician was not in a mood to fix anything. He demanded extra $110 for Garbage disposal in addition to Home Warranty deductible (even though its covered) and won't even bother to fix the tub as the opening is on outside wall and it was too hot outside. They never submitted their report and charged me deductible. Its has been 5 weeks now. The Home Warranty Company (First American) has now closed the claim and marked it completed. read more
