When our 20+ y/o AC unit finally gave up the ghost, and our even older furnace was likely to this winter, we embarked on a vendor quest for a new HVAC system. I met with a half dozen different vendors, and while each had their strengths and weaknesses (some with more of the latter than the former), after a detailed analysis of every estimate, we chose Thompson. They weren't the least expensive, neither the most. But in terms of the clarity of their proposal, Garret's understanding of our requirements, they made sure I had all the information I needed to make the right choice. This isn't a cheap project; we wanted to get it right the first time. We decided early on to explore a heat pump system, and Garret gave me great information to feel confident in proceeding in this direction. A couple of days after we inked the agreement, his crew arrived to do the install. Because we decided to replace our 30+ y/o ducting as well, it was a 2-day job. The first day, Ceasar, Angel, Chris & Ricky came out, pulled the old system out, installed the new, and removed the old ducting. On day two, Angel and Chris installed new ducts, tested out the system, and got it ready for the hot days ahead. They knew what they were doing, worked efficiently and cleanly, and could not have been nicer or more professional. After they finished, Ricky came back to do a final system tuneup to make sure everything was working as it should and to answer any final questions. It's never easy having contractors in your house doing major work, but you hardly knew these guys were here. They just went about the job with professionalism and real attention to getting everything right. Ceasar really is an artist when it comes to the install. Angel and Chris were super helpful in answering questions I had during install, and Ricky made sure that before he left, I knew everything I needed to know to operate and maintain my new system. When we asked the company to come back and service the mini split they were patient and understanding and got us in on a day that worked for both of our schedules. TL;DR: Thompson rocks, at least for plumbing (and likely for their other services as well). Allie in the office is as helpful and communicative as one dares to hope, and both Ramces and Ignacio are total professionals doing great work! I'm thrilled. The deets... Just had my first experience with Thompson (for plumbing), and they knocked it out of the park! It all started with an email from the City saying that the house had used 1,500 gallons of water over the previous 11 hours, and thus might have a leak. I called someone who specializes in finding leaks. Since the hourly usage (provided by the City) showed the heaviest times being sporadic, the gentleman was pretty convinced the underlying issue was mechanical, and not due to pressure. His guess was the whole-house water filtration unit, the Halo 5 (which I love). So I called Thompson on recommendation of my usual plumber, who is out for the next couple weeks. And what a great recommendation it was. Helpfully, Thompson is more than familiar with the Halo 5, and assured me it was extremely unlikely that the Halo was the root of the issue. In nine years of installing the Halo 5, they have encountered exactly one issue -- a minor leak -- during that entire period. What a relief! Allie in the office is _so_ patient. I tend to ramble on (as evidenced here), but she listened patiently and asked clarifying questions when needed -- perfect. As events unfolded, she continued to shine, communicating very well and proactively. I could not ask for better. After Allie called back to check my availability, Ramces showed as planned, right on time. The first step was to assess (since there was no "obvious" leakage), and he was very thorough. One key bit of diagnosis was finding that my water pressure reducing valve was not operating correctly, which was likely causing other issues in the house. (This was prophetic.) He also noticed that the hot water heater's expansion tank -- hanging from the ceiling -- was full, and would lead to other issues if not addressed. (They ended up installing a new one on top of the hot water heater, with the flow entering from the bottom, so it could drain back to the hot water heater as needed. SO much better.) I also pointed to a couple other small issues that I hoped to have addressed. Ramces provided a couple different estimates on the spot, according to how I wished to proceed with some of the minor work. Helpfully, Ramces would be doing the work himself. He mentioned that he may bring a second tech, so the work could be done more quickly. That was on Wednesday morning. We set Friday morning as a good time to return to handle things. Ramces arrived early (which was perfect!), and Ignacio joined him a short while later so they could "divide and conquer." Replacing the water pressure reducing valve was key. A dripping bathroom faucet stopped dripping without any work being done to the faucet itself. (Ramces had demonstrated the readings from the original valve being off from what was expected, and after replacement confirmed the expected readings. I found this very helpful.) The kitchen faucet -- a cheap brand, purchased and installed years before the Halo 5 -- had much corrosion on the bottom which effectively prevented its swivel. The new Moen faucet is so much nicer, swivels without effort, provides much better flow, and is likely to continue working for years to come, both because of better build quality, and because the Halo 5 means it's working with pure water, so no corrosive minerals. They also installed a Moen Flo water usage sensor to alert me promptly if usage is crazy-high like it was, and -- importantly -- either take action itself or allow me to take action (like shutting off the water remotely). Apparently home insurance companies are starting to require the device, and it's helpful for piece of mind while travelling. Had two completely new heat pump systems installed. One in the attic over an 18 foot ceiling with an opening that was smaller than the old unit they removed. The same technician came again, after I called the company, and replaced the hose with the new one provided by me. I wanted to leave a better review, but after a terrible customer service experience yesterday, I can't help it. People should know what they are signing up for with this company. The original A/C unit was installed well and worked well for about a year. This summer though, we had multiple breaker trips for the AC, enough to warrant a service call and we had a Thompson tech come out weeks ago. The tech did find an issue of stuff near the compressor restricting airflow and causing higher current through the unit. So this was addressed and fixed, paid the $89 service fee and even signed up for the (maintenance member plan... more on this mistake later). Some time later, we continue to operate the AC unit and we still were getting breaker trips. Okay... so I hired a licensed electrician to check the full electrical circuit, to check for and address anything that could be wrong in the wiring. The licensed electrician did find an issue in the panel, and admittedly this was not a mistake made by Thompson, as our panel had been upgraded and replaced after the initial AC installation. Before the electrician left on Friday of last week, I called and reached out to Thompson to send somebody out to update the electrical wiring portion that they had initially did (to support a new 35A breaker in place of a 30A breaker). This is where the nightmare customer service began. They send out an HVAC technician who is combative and argumentative rather than somebody who would have been qualified to make the requested change. I don't feel like I was being unreasonable with my request since the panel had a thermal event and we had a new 35A breaker installed in a new slot in the panel. I simply wanted Thompson to replace the 10 AWG solid core wiring portion that they initially did with 8AWG THWN-2 stranded copper wire to support the higher amperage breaker at lower temperature, all NEC code compliant requests. What actually happened was a huge waste of my time arguing with an HVAC technician about some basic electrical code stuff. I am now no longer planning to do anything with this company... so although the initial install MAY be okay, don't expect good support for any following issue, and don't sign up for the maintenance member plan that basically does nothing except charge you money. AVOID AT ALL COSTS unless you are willing to deal with future headaches, if any issues arise with their work. They aren't even willing to address changes that they had initially made (which does not leave me feeling confident about their work). I am having a separate licensed electrician come out to fix any code violations in the portion of electrical work that Thompson did (and can update review with findings), since I now no longer have a high degree of confidence in the electrical portion of the work that they did. I don't blame the tech yesterday for this, although he didn't need to LARP as a qualified electrician (wasn't a licensed electrician and was just arguing that a whole new 10 AWG copper circuit would have been better than the 8AWG aluminum circuit with a few splice points to copper -- which do need proper dissimilar metal connectors to prevent oxidation). Why even argue when your suggested changes are uncalled for and would make the existing wiring worse (and you're even unqualified to suggest or to do that work to begin with)?... This was a management and customer service dispatch problem to send out a tech who was unqualified to do the requested change. Reschedule or just tell people over the phone that you're not comfortable doing the requested work or a qualified tech is not available... Okay, fine. I would have been okay with that. Instead, over an hour of my time was wasted yesterday and I just ended up annoyed that I gave this company any money to begin with. EDIT: Updated to 3 stars since they deserve credit for a good initial installation given the original conditions. Customer service still needs improvement. I will not be a repeat customer. read more

TRIED TO PRICE GOUGE MY PREGNANT WIFE I'm absolutely furious that this technician tried to get my pregnant wife to pay $800 to replace a capacitor when our AC failed while I was out of town. When he could hear me on the phone telling her to call him out on it, he lowered the price to $500. For the work that was done (a capacitor costs about $25), that's on the VERY HIGH END, (about double what a reputable contractor would charge)... but she's pregnant and it's summer and it needed to be fixed. I am absolutely furious that there's no oversight at this company for this kind of behavior, and will be making a complaint to the CSLB. read more

I'm sorry to have to write this review. On July 31st I had Thompson's tech, Chris, come out for a routine inspection and cleaning of my older AC units. We were having no problems functionally. The downstairs unit was deemed full of refrigerant, with the compressor and all working as it should. It is this unit that became the issue. A couple of days after the service we turned on the AC and noted it wasn't cooling as quickly. We decided to see what happened in following experiences. Each of the next 2 times we found the AC worked more poorly with the second time it no longer able to cool at all. I called the company and had Chris come back to look for the problem. He hooked his gauges back up and quizzically noted the refrigerant was now gone. He couldn't identify the issue and said the would have to open the core to look for a leak there at a cost of $900 to assess further. I asked if the refrigerant could be refilled and he said no, that since it's an older gas the unit would instead have to be replaced at a cost of ~$12,000. So I got a second opinion from Blue Diamond Heating & Air. Their tech, Brian, walked up to the unit, simply put his ear to the Schrader valve and heard a slow leak. He sprayed a bit of soapy water in front of me and confirmed it. Took one minute and zero equipment. Turns out that when Thompson's tech disengaged his gauge from the valve it didn't fully close and the refrigerant began leaking out. He didn't check it after disengaging his tool, didn't apply what would have been a 25 cent cap on it (which would have been simple, best practice and would have stopped the leak) and, on top of that, didn't detect the leak the second time he came out and offered to sell me a new $12,000 unit. In the end, Brian was able to replace the valve and refill the R22 refrigerant, but it cost $1,700 due to the high price and volume of the older R22 gas. Naturally, I went back to Thompson and respectfully asked them to cover the cost of the gas that was lost due their negligence. Despite having their own pictures confirming the refrigerant levels before and after the service, the fact their tech had a second chance to find and fix the problem and the notes I provided from the second company's invoice, they refused to reimburse me. Thompson will NOT stand by their work and WILL UPSELL YOU. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! read more

I've worked with Thompson for over a year now and I could not be happier with the service they have provided. Since the purchase of our home we have had a variety of repairs and modifications made and the technicians at Thompsons have always accomplished what we needed promptly and with skill. We have had multiple toilets replaced, new drain lines installed for a garage washing machine, and they even installed an entire bathroom double sink vanity from attaching the quartz counter top, attaching everything to the wall, moving water lines and getting everything hooked up. We were fortunate to work with Ramon who was extremely professional and was able to quickly identify the cause of our problem. Be careful with these guys, they invoiced me $407 to do unnecessary work and didn't fix the problem, in February I had Brian come out to my building and do a cleaning he invoiced me for over $400 i paid it then 2 weeks later my fuses started to blow id replace them and it would blow again, so i called and said theres a problem can you send someone out to look at the unit maybe Brian shorted a wire or something. they said it was the capacitor they took care of it and charged me another $400.. Guess what? the fuse popped again..OMG i had to call again to have them send another guy out. It turns out it was a bad box, they did correct it and its been fine... so why am i invoiced $400 for a capacitor that didn't need to be replaced? haha chalk it up to being scammed i guess.. read more

We had a slab leak for the second time and we were feeling quite worried and stressed about the potential for having to turn our house upside down to fix it (the prior leak took 12 months to put our house back together the way we wanted it). After contacting more than a dozen companies I narrowed it down to Thompson. They did not charge to come out and assess the situation. The initial estimate was provided for free by Ignacio. There were several things that really impressed me: 1) he was very knowledgeable: he knew the building code for the age of our house and he knew how new construction plumbing was typically done 2) he was not arrogant about his knowledge: other plumbers were quite obnoxious, some even poking fun at the work of others or making false statements. Ignacio was easy to get along with. 3) he was quick to identify the most affordable but reliable solution 4) he was polite and well mannered and took the time to patiently explain everything 5) the estimate gave me 3 options and, although plumbing isn't ever cheap, and they were perhaps not the cheapest, they seemed to be fair value for the work When the work was done 1 week later two plumbers came (Ignacio and Arturo). They were both polite and helpful. They did exactly as agreed on the estimate for the price stated. They took the time they said it would take. They re-routed the plumbing in the garage. They took the time to explain what they were doing every step of the way. I was happy to see how well the solution worked after all the other predictions of doom and gloom from their competitors (perhaps to scare us in to re-piping our entire house). What a relief to have our slab leak fixed and the hot water back on in our house without it breaking the bank! Third follow up! We love Thompson, Veronica in the office is WONDERFUL, owner/operator Garrett is very friendly and informative, and Mario (tech) is great too!! This visit was just for annual/scheduled maintenance, as our system has been running awesome since day one. (Or maybe day 14....after we realized the drainage terminated into a wall stud instead of the washer drain as our plumbers had indicated...) We are living in some strange times with COVID 19, so I first want to highlight that Garrett and Mario went above and beyond to be safe, socially distant, and sanitary while in my home. Both wore masks, frequently washed hands, and took time to confirm the steps they are taking to keep their clients safe. Our downstairs heater started to malfunction so I called Thompson H&AC to take a look at it. They originally installed our H&AC system several years before. I requested that Ty come out since he had helped us with an issue 2 years ago. He quickly diagnosed it but unfortunately it was going to take a few days to receive the needed motor & module. It arrived a little faster than we expected. They had already called and got us on Ty's schedule ahead of time so we did not have to wait an extra day or 2. Ty came out and installed it quickly and everything is working great now. The heater had to remain off during this time to prevent more components from being damaged but Thompson responded quickly to minimize downtime.
