Prime Beef Ribeye with ice green tea.

Another amazing experience at Cal Shabu! Sonny and crew are always super friendly and gracious. The Kobe beef today was absolute butter. Just melted in our mouths. The prime beef was also delicious but nothing compares to that Kobe. Got my spicy drops for the ponzu and had an Orion draft to accompany the meal. Great spot to eat and watch the World Cup.

    Donkey Kong was huge. Delicious!

After 13 years of eating here my review still stands as a blazing 5 stars. Consistent QUALITY everywhere from service to the food. Cal Shabu is my favorite Shabu shabu this side of the Pacific. Only Shabusen in Ginza Tokyo ranks higher. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Great atmosphere and the people running the place treat you like an old friend.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] No wonder so many locals and non-locals alike frequent this restaurant.

First time here, definitely won't be the last.

Cal Shabu has some of the best service I've experienced. The waiters are incredibly attentive and genuinely mindful. Sonny, in particular, was so thoughtful . He brought me lemon tea and even asked if I wanted Raw honey after noticing I had a sore throat. The Kobe beef was AMAZING. Absolutely mouth-watering. I'm definitely coming back. Broth is light and flavorful not too overpowering, [[HIGHLIGHT]]atmosphere is calm chill with loft style music. Perfect for lunch dates BTW.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Thanks Jonny for packing my leftovers porridge! Great customer service!

One of my favorite places!! Service and quality 10/10. They're extremely attentive and create such a fun experience especially if it's your first time !

Update: the manager surprised me with some kabocha slices today after seeing my review I posted a while ago. I appreciate businesses that listen and pay attention to their customers. Now I know that I can request for these on future visits. I already gave them a 5-star review earlier. This review just further justifies why they deserve that rating.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The food and vibes were amazing, but what really made the experience was the service!!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Felt so at home here. All the workers are so kind and attentive, making you feel extra taken care of. Special thank you to Sunny for the hospitality! You can tell how much they really care about their business and the environment they create for their customers. 1000/10 recommend. The lychee and mango sorbet were to die for

5 stars. No words. Amazing. We got the Sunny special, he made our sauces taste so flavorful and turned our shabu into an udon soup at the end. All the staff are so friendly and the yuzu sparkling sake was so yummy. Come here if you're looking for real shabu.

I gotta start by saying that the customer service here is top notch. All the workers are very attentive and come over if you need help. This was my first time trying Shabu and I didn't know how it works but our server came over and explained everything and offered some recommendations. This great place and everyone knows each other and the quality of the food is 10/10

We love California Shabu! We have been coming here since it's opening back in the day. Dinner time is always a lengthy wait. We usually go for dinner, but this time around, we decided to go for lunch. Lunch was quick and efficient. Sonny was there to help us and he is SO AWESOME! We ordered the large prime ribeye and the pork belly. The meat is sliced in front of you. We received our veggie noodle plate, our sauces and we ordered hot sake and Orion beer. I like my sauce spicy, so I requested for 3 hot drops in my ponzu. Restaurant is really cute. They have anime inspired murals all over and a cute little waiting area with a TV and a little arcade game. Very clean. Restrooms are clean too. Highly recommend. Get there early if you are planning on dinner. Lunch is usually no wait. Last seating for lunch is 1:30PM.

IMO, all entrees at any of these shabu places are all the same. But the service here is excellent and the one thing they have here that none of the other shabu places has is the jelly fish appetizer, everyone should try it, it not as weird as it sounds, it's really good.

My "large" portion of beef belly and pork belly...

This place used to be in Long Beach on second street right?

    No they do not

Is there high chair for toddler?

Yes, they do have high chair for toddler. Every time we are there, the high chair is very clean :)

Are they open for dinning or just Togo only?

They are back open for dining :)

Is available sitting right now? Is there a way to make reservations?

They have a list you put your name on at the door or on Yelp! It's a great system!

What sauce do they use? By which sauce, I'm talking about the light brown sauce they give you. Many use it to dip their vegetables and/or meat in. If anyone knows the name of this sauce, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!! 😊

Ponzu is the one for vegetables. Goma is the thicker sesame one.

Does this restaurant work for parties of 8? Do they take reservations for lunch?

We take customers at a first come, first serve basis. We can accommodate larger parties as well. We do require that the entire party is present prior to being seated. The Cal Shabu team works at a face pace to help aid with quicker turnover and… Read more

But I was caught off guard by the lack of music and overall how quiet the whole place was. I went on a Friday and there weren't many people there, which isn't bad just something I had noticed. Very stark comparison to the other breweries in the area, which were much more lively. The beers itself were decent; however, there were no prices posted anywhere on the chalk menu, or the paper menu from what I saw. I ordered 2 drinks, one of which needed to have the keg replaced. When the attendant returned she said they were actually completely out, but the drink I had ordered was a double IPA, and without any prices posted or itemized receipt, I wasn't sure what I was able to get instead. The attendant then tells me "if you get something cheaper, I won't change the price" which confused me. A double IPA is typically more expensive than a regular beer or seltzer and she didn't even offer a refund to compensate for the fact that it was sold out and I had already paid for it. This could have been mitigated if the prices were available or she offered me an itemized receipt. For 2 beers I paid $20 before tipping. As a customer I'd like to be informed of what I'm getting charged for, and if I'm charged for something more and given less, I'd like a partial refund. In the end I got my beers and sat down. The brewery itself doesn't serve food, so it was nice being able to bring my own food and est what I want. Again, up until 30 minutes of being there, no music was playing, so very off putting vibe. Overall, I did not enjoy my experience here and don't recommend anyone coming here when other breweries are in tbe area and much more clear with pricing and have a more lively vibe.

The IPAs were excellent -- fresh, flavorful, and well-crafted. Great variety, too. Whether you like something hazy and juicy or a more classic, hop-forward profile, they've got you covered. Too many choices, absolutely a first world, yet relatable problem, what's a girl to do??? Why would she choose Synth? Synth Beer feels like a bar; a place where adults can come and unwind, with a little atmosphere, some ambiance, and a low-key, atypical-beer, beer community, it's giving "cheers." The aesthetics are on point; intentional and stylish, disco meets retro tastefully, with a music centric energy. It's a space made to be a vibe. Although I do enjoy going to breweries, I always feel a little meh...as increasingly they lean into the "San Diego" "big brewery" feel... soooooo, they always feel same-same, barely different; like a Sunday sports backyard kickback, a man cave, a dog park and a children's birthday party had a super baby...what is really going on here? Feels a bit chaotic. Synth is the opposite of this: compact, stylish, friendly and personable. A.Max owner/manager greets you with warmth and a big smile, you instantly feel at home. And for those a little beer-ed out, they do 2 different killer seltzer-based cocktails! They make a die-hard margarita lover pause and say, thank you sir, may I have another?!?! So, if you find yourself wondering IF Synth should be included in your next beer-venture, the answer is clearly, very yes!
