    What the duck!
    Victoria D.

Definitely stop by and give this place a try! I've driven by this place so many times and decided to give it a try. Made a reservation via yelp and it was go time. Ordered the crudo, ochazuke and the "what the duck" and all was absolutely delicious! All the dishes wwas on point. My fav was the "what the duck". I will definitely be back to give their other dishes a try. Also tried 2 cocktails and both were delightful and refreshing. On of the the cocktails that I ordered was name something in Tokyo which was my fav out of the 2. Staff were helpful on recommendations and were nice. The restaurant isn't too big but is quaint. Give this place a try if you're in the area or looking for a new place to try out!

Really like Hanuman thai's sister restaurant. Unlike HT, they do allow reservations. They're also super busy even on weekdays so reservations recommended. Free lot parking. Even with reservation we were sat around 20 mins after checking in. The staff is really nice and checks in multiple times to communicate delays or even walk you through the food. This is mostly for people who are not vegan or vegetarian with egg aversion or restrictions. There is one/two entree's that they may agree to make vegetarian but it uses egg noodles and fish sauce or broths. We tried edamame, the deconstructed khao soi sommen, and salmon. All of it was nice. Would like to be back someday to try the drinks.

Came here on a Wednesday night. Order some cocktails, not spectacular Food Dozen oysters -tried all three they had none were really sweet or creamy, the condiments that came with it (lime/jam/green sauce / fried onions) didn't really pair well Brussels sprouts -winner in appetizer perfectly backed and sliced good flavor Yellow tail with coconut base - too sweet Duck curry -too sweeet, wish the duck was more roasted , tasted more boiled / overhyped Soft shell crab bento - different flavor profiles nothing great Pork jowl - simple very good . Winner for the night Staff was great A bit more pricey 2 rounds of drinks and food for 4 was $350 another down side

Service is good just like hanuman. They give like a granita dessert for special occasion. Relatively small space and the whole staff does sing for u happy birthday with a funny mix. The corn appetizer was yummy with good flavor, beef teriyaki had decent tender pieces. Opted for a nonalcoholic tamarind drink and i actually quite liked the tamarind syrup, but it did need to be mixed and kind of drunken with the rim for the full experience. The duck curry had grapes in it LOL but the sauce is actually really yummy and slightly spicy. Duck didn't have too much flavor but was tender. The servers kept asking if we wanted to order more rice, but the steak dish also comes with its own flavored rice. Same with the prawn and steak, i feel like there wasnt too strong of a protein flavor, but the sauces make up for it. Overall, the chef here excellent in the sauces they make for the dishes, i think flavor composition wise it was balanced rather than satiating/heavy. Id recommend for anyone looking for a well rounded food experience as the dishes are quite pleasing to the eye

This is the sister restaurant to Hanuman, which is seriously my favorite Thai restaurant in the world, so I was super excited to make a visit here! It's located right next to Hanuman and you can actually order from both restaurant menus here which is good to know if there's a long line at Hanuman! We only ordered one dish from the Etc Bar menu and the rest off the Hanuman one, but the dish we did try from here was super good! What the duck comes with a super flavorful red curry, perfectly cooked duck, and lychee and grapes which I thought was really unique. All of the components of the dish worked well together, and I also really liked the rice it came with for some reason haha I'm not sure what made it so good. The duck reminded me of Korean bossam, but it definitely had a good duck flavor and they give you a good portion of it. The fruit in it was unfamiliar at first, but we ended up really liking it actually- provided a sweetness and freshness to the dish. I'll be back to try more of the menu here! Wish we could've tried more today but we saw that we could order Hanuman dishes here and just couldn't resist haha.

The interior was kind of cramped. The food here was delicious, but we felt like the portions were a bit small. It was also a bit expensive, but it was a good experience.

Wow Thaizakaya blows my mind every time. I've been here 3x and the food is consistently fire. The duck curry is soooo so good - obsessed w the grapes in there the flavors round out so beautifully. After living near Thai town in la for 4 yrs, I will say Thaizakaya deserves much more hype. A 10/10 rarely pops up in OC and when it does it absolutely needs its flowers. Love the concept & small plates - will continue to bring friends & family here. Haven't tried the drinks yet but they look delish!

This restaurant has phenomenal, well executed Thai Japanese fusion food, with flavors more leaning towards Thai. We went on a Friday night and waiting about 20 minutes. My favorite dish was the Midori amaebi (sweet shrimp) and the what the duck, though every dish was a hit. Finishing off the meal with the yuzu granita was very refreshing and a perfect way to end the meal.

So excited to have found this place! I loved everything I got there. It was an amazing ambiance perfect for date nights. Cocktail menu is extensive and unique I really enjoyed my drink and cannot wait to get more! Standout dishes: uni mentaiko pasta! 10/5! I loved the mixture of creamy seafood udon! Truffle fries are always a must and was standard I think it could've been a little bit stronger on the truffle 3.5/5 Pork jowl 5/5 soft and delicious! Loved the sauce with Soft shell crab: 4/5! Crispy and soft at the same time Duck curry: 3.5/5 good but was expecting a little bit more Yellowtail tom kha carpaccio: 5/5 loved the tom kha sauce and fresh slices of sashimi would definitely get again

I was craving izakaya food and came across this fusion place. The reviews and pictures looked promising. I really enjoyed the experience overall but giving it a 4 because I thought everything was a little too sweet. The crudo, curry, and even the pork jowl just had a little bit too much sugar in it. Just felt like a savory dessert. I don't like sweet meals but I know most do. I wish the curry wasn't like syrup because it had a right flavor I wanted to inhale with rice but the sweetness was too much. The service was great and the servers were attentive. The inside was packed but we luckily got on the yelp wait list relatively early.

Spicy tuna on crispy rice. Salmon mayo on crispy rice
    Mickey T.

NOTE: Dined in on 4/25/2026. Take advantage of using the Yelp waitlist and be aware that the parking lot can get packed during peak hours since people are also flocking to Hanuman next door. I actually used to eat at Etc pretty often, so I was surprised to see that it had turned into a "Thaizakaya" thanks to the takeover by Hanuman. Hanuman is one of the most popular Thai restaurants in all of OC and while I personally think it's good, I prefer some spots up in LA over it. That being said, when they reopened Etc with a Thai/Japanese fusion menu, I couldn't help but be intrigued. Here's what we got: Spicy tuna on crispy rice - Love that there's an option to get just one piece, because sometimes you don't want to commit to two! Plus you can try one of these and one salmon mayo on crispy rice. No complaints - exterior of the rice had a good crunch without sticking to your teeth. Inside the rice had a decent texture, although I prefer a bit more separation inside rather than a more solid block. Spicy tuna itself was average. I like a bit more of a bite to my spicy tuna or bounce. Salmon mayo on crispy rice - I enjoyed this more than the spicy tuna, mostly because the salmon was delicious and had that nice satisfying bite to it that comes from a little bit of aging. I would still recommend trying one of each to see which one crispy rice you enjoy more :) Hamachi collar - too small of a portion and not a lot of meat on it for the price. The flavors were good and it was cooked well, but I wouldn't order it again. Little spoiled from being able to buy this and grill it at home. Kani Kare - served like a bento box, this dish had really tasty individual components, but since the flavors of each compartment were so strong, they would overpower one another if you tried to eat them together. Comes with super flavorful curry infused rice, the crab with this spicy dipping sauce (reminds me of the sauce they give with salt cod fried rice), silky "ommu" scrambled eggs (like the kind used for omurice), and seaweed salad. We ended up eating just one thing at a time per bite and it was still good. What the duck - pretty sure it's red curry and includes okra, grapes, lychee, tomatoes, and of course... the duck. The fruit was a nice touch to cut through the richness and fattiness of the duck. It was cooked perfectly BUT the skin was not crispy! That's my only knock against it, because the meat inside was super tender and on the bright side, the skin wasn't tough or chewy. It just didn't have that crisp to it that I would prefer. Still probably the best item we tried, and I would come back for this. Overall, etc is serving up some pretty good food, but I'll say that I ordered dishes that didn't really showcase the "fusion" aspect of things. I either ordered dishes that are Japanese or Thai. I'll definitely come back to evaluate whether the dishes that incorporate elements from both cuisines are worth it.

Had the most incredible experience a few weeks back at Etc! Great tasting food and amazing service!! Ploy was our server and absolutely incredible. We would go back just for her! She helped with recommendations and was so attentive! Our experience was so good we are going back with our friends this weekend so they can experience Etc!

Excellent food, drinks and service. Parking was pretty easy in the strip mall. Perfect for a date night or a small group of friends Food- 5 stars pork jowl- fatty and flavorful without being too greasy. Great balance all around midori amaebi- the shrimp was so fresh and the sauce had a solid kick to it. Great way to start the meal uni mentaiko udon- rich yet balanced. I could've eaten so much of this. Much more complex than your traditional uni pasta thai style ochazuke- great opener or closer. All the ingredients were so flavorful and balanced well together Service- 5 stars Food came out relatively quick and the servers were incredibly accommodating. Bottom Line Perfect date night. Excellent food, drinks, service and easy parking.

Service was attentive throughout the meal, with the staff checking in regularly without being intrusive. There was no lunch rush when we went, making for a nice, calm brunch atmosphere. The lychee lemonade came with unlimited refills, which was a nice bonus. It tasted how you'd expect from a classic lemonade with a noticeable lychee flavor, and had lychee pulp throughout. We ordered several dishes to share. The Calamari was a good appetizer. It had a light, crispy coating with good seasoning, and the dipping sauce paired nicely with it. We also tried the Carne Asada Fries, which were loaded with flavor. The meat was well-seasoned, and the sauces tied everything together without overwhelming the fries. The Garlic Noodles with filet were a solid choice. The noodles were flavorful, and the filet was cooked well, tender and juicy. The Fried Rice with Pork Jowl was probably my favorite dish. The pork jowl was rich, tender, and packed with flavor, and the fried rice complemented it really well, offsetting the fattiness. For being at South Coast Plaza, I thought the prices were fairly reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. It's not somewhere I can afford every week, but it's a great option when you're looking for a nicer lunch while shopping. I'd definitely come back to try more of the menu.

I actually ended up making my way near the kitchen, and that's where I found Christian, who appeared really busy. He explained that they had a wedding later that day and had to close at 1pm for set up. He still sat our party and was very kind, accommodating and helpful. He gave me a great tip and said when making cafe reservations, it's best to call ahead, because they do sometimes have event buy outs. As far as the ambiance, it is a really beautiful space.
