We got together with some friends on a Saturday night and visited 4 venues. Each venue was fun and had something going for it, but Calaveras Cantina was the most fun. When we arrived the bar was busy but they still had room to dance. Calaveras had a great vibe, with low light and live music. We grabbed a corner or the bar, next to the live music, and order some drinks. The service was fast and friendly. The drinks were excellent. We started dancing to the latin rhythms, while enjoying our drinks. We inspired others to join and the fun went on for a while. The musicians were also very friendly and encouraged us to keep on dancing. Great ambiance, service and drinks combined with live music is a great recipe. Came here on a whim because the other place we wanted to try had a 1 hour waitlist! We had to wait about less than 10 minutes for our outdoor seat on a Wednesday evening. It was serendipitous because everything was super tasty and fresh. I highly recommend the table side guacamole made to order right in front of you it was well seasoned and just perfection. The chips also had this delicious peppery powder on it! The cheese fundido was also bomb, very cheesy. Not for the faint of heart. I tried the spicy pork belly taco with kimchi slaw, the pork belly was crispy and the chunks were huge. It was a nice take on an exotic taco. My family and I love calaveras and have been coming here consistently for the past (2) years. Located in mizner park, calaveras is located in one of the corners of the shopping center, they have indoor and outdoor seating and so many delicious food offerings. The drinks are not always exactly the same but their meals are. My personal favorite is the ground beef rice bowl and the chicken flautas- we get them every time! I've also had their birria tacos. Delicious! We have had Kane (sp?) as a server and he is wonderful- even on a super busy night he went above and beyond for us. Opportunity: Mizner park is a very family oriented location and I've always seen kids at this location including mine and my family. When we first started going there they had coloring books and crayons for kids and suddenly discontinued this as an offering. We came here for drinks and sat at the bar. I had the house margarita which was ok, one friend had a strawberry margarita and another friend had a beer. We ordered the guacamole and chips which were very good. They chips have a little spice on them. They had two musicians playing, one playing the drums and the other spinning some music. People got up to dance. There were some great Latin dancers there. Would like to come back and try the food. The restaurant is decorated with lots of skulls throughout place, which is reflective of their name ( Spanish). **Vegetarian Friendly** Right in the heart of Mizner Park, this is a massive restaurant! Lots of indoor and outdoor seating, and perfect for a large group. Double thumbs up for the menu indicating vegan options! Our Order: (1) Nachos Matador - chips were burnt, but is a great dish to share with the table! (2) Veggie Taco "Crispy" - I had higher expectations for this taco, because of how delicious the ingredient list was. It fell incredibly flat. Cauliflower was very bland, and the "crispy" shell was not good. It was stale! (3) Queso/Cheese Enchilada with Verde Sauce - good enchilada, but on the sweeter side for some reason I was a little disappointed that it was more tex-mex-y versus authentic mexican, but not a big deal! We were upcharge $5 for "Veggie Nachos" - when we asked to remove the meat. Their reasoning was "that's how we do it" They automatically add 18% Gratuity to everyone's bill - our service was appropriate for the 18% addition. Would we come back? Maybe. The restaurant has a good-sized menu. I was happy that they made table-side fresh guacamole and it's good. They adjust the heat to taste. We also ordered the famous Street Corn and Duck Empanadas. We decided to come here for an early lunch as we had to return some thing to one of the stores in Mizner Park. The interior of the restaurant was nicely decorated. Victoria, our waitress told us what the weekly specials were as well as the lunch special. My wife and I each had a margarita. It came quickly. My wife had the shrimp taco lunch special and I had the ground beef tacos with white rice and black beans. The tacos were not the tastiest. How have I never been here before Saturday?? Best Al pastor taco I've ever had!!! And the spicy pork was delish! Only complaint is I highly recommend the corn tortillas over the flower.. the flower tortilla was a little hard. My husband got the Birria tacos and they were good, very cheesy almost like a grilled cheese Birria. Once again, Calaveras was a great spot to stop in. We have been a few times before as its nice to stop in when in and around the Mizner plaza. This night we got in a bit late, hoping they had the 2 piece Latin band that we had seen before. Sure enough, the Dj and the Latin percussionist were dong there thing. There were already a few other people dancing so we jumped in to the action as well. after a few songs we got a order to go for dinner and some drinks too. The Rum and coke was Pepsi. I had to ask after I ordered as it tasted funny. But the bartenders were very nice about their job. The sound and space to dance was great. We even got the info of the band so we could find out when the are there. We got our food a bit later and took it home. Sadly the shrimp tacos had steak in them. And the steak was really tough. Either over cooked or just cheap meat. The quesadillas were sadly the steak ones and had the same tough meat. We had to throw away the tacos and quesadilla's. I would have sent it back, but because our friends picked this place, I didn't want to make a scene. The 1/2 chicken was more like a 1/2 pigeon in size. We started with blood orange and mango margs and they were not too sweet and fabulous. We then ordered the hh short rib nachos (half order) and 3 of us shared them. Wow! "I love this place!" They have a great happy hour because there is so much bar space both inside and outside. There is a reduced priced food and drink menu with lots of options. I was there with a group of fun and rowdy people, and we had great service. We started at the bar while waiting for our table reservation. My only complaint is that there is an 18% service charge added to ALL checks, and it was not highlighted on our bills, so buyer beware that you could accidentally double tip if you don't check your total. At the table, Miriam was our server, and she was wonderful. She took our orders with ease and then separated out our individual bills at the end of our meal. I asked if my meal could be made a little spicier and it was perfect so thank you back of house for listening to the front of house. A very popular spot here in Boca. Packed with families and friends gathering for a night of drinks and healthy Mexican food. Tonight it was my night to check it out while in town. Met up with my fellow Yelper Ariel who lives in the area at her suggestion. Loved the ambience and the "Día de Muertos" theme was great throughout the restaurant. We sat outside in the warm air and ordered our margaritas with Frankie our server. She was fabulous!!! Although they did warn the metal tray was hot, the shape of the metal tray sticks so high that when you reach for the tortillas you can easily burned. Be careful. I was burned twice. After shopping for a bit, we decided to eat somewhere and were attracted to Calaveras Cantina. One of their things is that they make guacamole at your table. We ordered the queso clásico and it was the highlight of the meal for me. The queso was creamy, warm, and very flavorful. The salsa clásica was also very tasteful, but it was kinda of runny instead of thicker. The ground beef taco's meat was really good, and they pack their tacos very full. Their service was good, they were quick and prompt with bringing out the food. They did bring out the wrong shell type for my taco but that's not a big deal. While visiting a Mizner Park we decided to stop in Calveras Cantina to watch the last half of one of the World Cup games and grab a bite to eat. I wasn't too hungry so I knew I only wanted an app and while looking around it seemed around and their mom had ordered the table side guacamole, and I admit it looked like it tasted good but after asking a few questions to the servers they stated their in home gauc is just as good for half the price so we went with that. For drinks I had the orange sunset which was good, and I even ordered another one but this time with an extra shot to really to kick it up a notch. Everything tasted good!! The service here is truly something special and very attentive which is great. Also the bathrooms were almost spotless. I LOVE their shrimp, steak, brisket, and chicken tacos the most! Their fajitas are also amazing if you'd prefer to not get the tacos. I was also surprised to find that their Calaveras salad was amazing as well, the dressing even has a little kick to it making it so much better! Plus there was a decidedly minor issue: I paid in cash, and the change returned was minus the coins. Sure it was only 25 cents or something. But it's the principle. You're telling me how much to tip and then rounding up my bill. I've had that happen here and there, but it always irks me.
