I was reminded of Caldwell County BBQ's jalapeño cheddar sausage today while thinking about the best barbecue I have had and where I would recommend. I live in California now, but I would recommend Caldwell County to anyone in Arizona, especially people in the East Valley who somehow have not tried it yet. This is genuinely some of the best barbecue I have had. The meats are flavorful, the portions are satisfying, and the jalapeño cheddar sausage has just the right amount of heat without overpowering everything else. It is the kind of food that sticks in your memory long after you leave. Honestly, if I lived close to the Power Road location, I would have a very difficult time staying away. On Sunday, 8/16, my friend was craving BBQ and invited me. I am a new resident of Arizona of one year and I'm still exploring many places and things. Anyway, we arrive at Caldwell County BBQ (Gilbert location) and this was my first time ever dining here. The ambiance is laid back, social, and friendly. Let me say that this place did NOT disappoint whatsoever. The (lean) brisket is so delicious! I hadn't had a baked potato in a very long time and that, too, was delicious. The restaurant is always busy but in a good way, which is understandable. The staff are really welcoming and friendly, which is great and my first time experience was positive. I almost came back for another order of brisket, maybe sliders or a salad the following day but I am holding off for now, but I will be back again for sure. Yum! The meat is wonderful. Everyone can find a side they like. They definitely keep busy and they work hard at keeping it clean great barbecue sauces on for you to choose from. My husband and I went for dinner on Saturday and ordered a little bit of every meat just to try it. All were excellent. I would say the brisket is my favorite.. The staff is very friendly and motivated to give you a great experience. We were so full we never got to dessert. It on the patio adjusted sunset. Went with friends for dinner tonight & we could smell the food from the parking lot! We were greeted upon arrival. We were offered yummy samples & all I could say was "Wow, this is damn good!" We each placed our orders. My friend & her man ordered the Family of 4 meal, which looked & smelled so good! They ate & took the rest home to have leftovers. My other friend & I both got a loaded baked potato with sausage, plus she got a side of cole slaw with hers. I knew as big as their potatoes are that I'd eat half & take the rest home, so I only got the potato. So damn good! I love that Coke products are served here. You know me & my Coke Zero! My friends come here enough that the owner, Mason, knows them well. Mason is awesome & so is his crew. The was the best bbq I've had in AZ in 6 years. The brisket, turkey, sausage, potato salad corn casserole were great. The burnt ends were a little saucer than I expected but were still very good. Service was fantastic we had multiple people check on us and proactively helped with dropped silverware (dining with a toddler (: ) When we mentioned it was our first time there they threw in a banana pudding which was great! I'm not a huge banana fan but I still liked it. They have some indoor seating but it's probably 30% indoor 70% outdoor seating. We ate early so we got an indoor seat but this place is busy (because it's good :) ) it reminding me of a lot of the bbq staples on TX, and the shinerbock helped. We have been meaning to try this place. You can smell the smokers in the air. Today we were able to stop for lunch. They were busy! Parking lot was full. They have a small indoor area with tables with many more outside with misters. It was 112 today so we waited for an indoor table. I thought to myself, it must be really good as there were many people outside in the extreme heat to have lunch . We ordered 2 brisket sandwiches, I got a side of their potato salad and my wife got a side of corn casserole. Wow! The brisket is so delicious! The sides were also very good. 5/6/26 Today was my Neighbors 89th Birthday, the celebration was food for 30 people managed as Filipino family service. Parking 5/5 We arrived at 6 pm and took one of the last spots in the back. Service 10/5 Celebration arrangements were done by my neighbors amazing daughter who ordered the Full Monte sampler which included generous portions of protein, all the sides and drinks. Seating 15/5 Anyone familiar with Caldwells business model knows this is a wait inline to order, move over to the cashier then search for seatings which can be challenging at best during peak lunch & dinner hours. In our case the Caldwell's manager Torrin personally re-arranged tables so our group could be seated together and included one table for all the food and gifts. Food 10/5 This rating recognizes Caldwell's BBQ is wildly popular. Pushing it higher for this experience was how the food was delivered to the party. Once our party of 30 were seated together, four + large variety platters of protein, sides and fountain beverages were placed on a serving table family style. Atmosphere 5/5 The back patio was our celebration location and it was filling up quickly and we gathered for the celebration. During the course of our visit we enjoyed the transition from daylight to evening where the atmosphere of the back patio began to soften with a wonderful span of string patio lighting for outdoor ambiance. This quickly became an extremely fun place to move table to table visiting with everyone. My neighbors family (11 siblings, 9 stateside) are Doctors and Nurses who served in the VA Hospitals throughout the US and their families who have treated me as family over the years. Well, I haven't been here in a long time. Change the line to order food, which is a good great idea. I ended up getting a half a rack of pork ribs and 1 pound of beef ribs. $38 a pound even with 30% off is a little overpriced. They were good but they were not great but I don't think I'd buy them again probably not but thanks for allowing me to try them still great food still great service. You can sit inside or outside of course with it being over 100 you want to sit inside and they seem to made more seating inside with the redirection of ordering give it a try I think they'll love it. read more

Amazing BBQ find in Gilbert and I had this place bookmarked for a while. They have huge smokers/pits in the back and you know it's legit. I ordered the pork ribs as it's one of my favorite things and it was so good, I had to stop myself from eating the full rack in one seating. They are not shy on the pepper so it has some heat. Sauces include house and AZ gold mustard base. They gave me a brisket sample while I was in line and it was so melt in your mouth. Huge seating area outside and they also have inside AC seating. Great spot for BBQ! I always stop by after a trip and it hits the spot. All the meats have always been tender and juicy. My favorite side is the corn casserole. They have indoor and outdoor seating. They also have a little basket with a few different sauces you can use. There's always a line when I come (that's how good it is) but it moves quickly! read more

I stopped by Caldwell County BBQ for dinner on a Saturday evening. Located in Gilbert, I found street parking right in front of the restaurant despite it being quite busy. I'll preface this review by saying I have very high standards when it comes to BBQ. I am from Houston after all. Caldwell County BBQ very much lived up to the hype. It's no surprise their reviews are so good. Ambiance (5/5): Caldwell County BBQ serves Texas-style BBQ. I felt right at home. There's a lot of Texan decor and the sort of ambiance you would expect at a BBQ joint. It's a spacious restaurant with plenty of seating outside and a decent amount of seating inside. We sat inside. One of the things they do well is keeping the A/C blasting both indoors and outdoors (while you're likely going to wait in line) along with misters. Definitely something you need in Phoenix! Service (4/5): I hate waiting in line. Though it's not unusual at popular BBQ spots, I still wish places like this would hire a couple of more people to make the line move faster (or even completely eliminate the lines). We probably waited in line for about 20 minutes. They have a water cooler along the route, but it was all out. Something the staff should check on a little more frequently. With all this being said, Caldwell County is well worth the wait. Drinks (5/5): Whenever I'm at a BBQ joint, I'm looking for sweet tea. Which they have here. Plus your standard assortment of soft drinks and alcohol, with a focus on beer. Food (5/5): BBQ joints typically have you pay by weight or by plates (one meat, two meats, three meats, etc.). Caldwell does it by the pound unless you go with a sandwich, loaded baked potato, etc. What's nice is they also have a family pack for 4 which comes with brisket, pulled pork, and your choice of ribs, sausage, or one other protein which is escaping me. Plus two large pint-size sides. We rolled with this option as it's a good deal (brisket, pulled pork, and St. Louis style ribs with corn casserole and mac and cheese). White bread, pickles, onions, and jalapenos are available free of charge. There are three BBQ sauces at each table: their classic BBQ, spicy, and AZ gold). We also added a quarter pound of the AZ burnt ends. Man, these are some quality meats. Brisket is the true test of Texas BBQ and the shining star. The brisket here isn't the best I've ever had but it's quite respectable. The sweet and spicy AZ burnt ends were delicious too. The ribs were tender and had a nice sweet glaze on them. The pulled pork was my least favorite, but still quite good. The sides are solid, though they could be a bit better. The mac and cheese was too peppery for my taste and the corn casserole was too sweet. Like pretty much all craft BBQ these days, Caldwell County BBQ isn't cheap. But the quality is there. This is the type of place that I would come back to again and again. They also have a location in Peoria though this one is the original. And I hear they don't run out of meats as other BBQ joints do (especially in Texas). That's a big plus! It's always a bummer when a BBQ joint is out of something you want. If you haven't been to Caldwell County BBQ, change that quick. Yeehaw! read more

I've had really bad BBQ in the past which turned me off of all BBQ for the longest time, but Caldwell Co. has officially changed my mind. The food portion here is generous and it's absolutely banging. Salad greens are fresh and very cleanly prepared. Just remember to be clear on what kind of meat you want (if you want the moist cuts, then ask for the moist cuts). There's plenty of outdoor seating in the beer garden area, and a couple of tables inside as well. If you park in the parking lot, you'll likely go through the outdoor seating area to get inside. But look for the sign on the siding to the left that shows you where to go. You have to circle around towards the front entrance where the line actually starts. Can't miss the big blackboard facing the front of the building. It'll go pretty quick -- folks behind the service counter work fast. We came during the day, but I hear it's really nice at night with all the Edison lights on. One day, I'll have to come visit again and check it out. Overall, this is a stellar place to dine in and grab takeout. Bring a date, bring a friend, and enjoy! read more

Soooo good. Got the family plate for 4 and I can't say a single thing on that plate was less than "good", most were great. Loved the Southern-style sweet tea, and the smoked turkey was a standout - phenomenal. Juicy and flavorful. Banana pudding was also delicious. Not too sweet, creamy, and balanced. I just recently moved to Mesa from Utah and honestly, I don't usually write reviews. But the restaurants out here in Arizona have been so incredibly friendly that I just had to! My husband Michael is a total BBQ nut and has been on the hunt for our new routine go-to spot. We got a recommendation to check out Caldwell County BBQ off Power and Nunneley, so we made the drive out. We are SO glad we did. The food was incredible--the brisket was so juicy, and the corn casserole and Texas sheet cake were honestly amazing. They also have a huge selection of drinks to choose from, which was a nice bonus! Many families and groups came in while we were there and it was so fun to see such a lively atmosphere! The service was definitely the highlight, though. A girl named Heartily came up to check on us and started chatting. She asked where we were from and what our plans were now that we're in AZ, which got us talking all about Utah and our love for national parks since we're super outdoorsy. It was so cool of her! She even brought us out samples of items we didn't get to try, kept our waters full, and got our to-go boxes ready. A few other staff members came by to check on us too, and it was just so refreshing to see a younger generation so ambitious and genuinely happy to be working there. They took their time to make sure everything was perfect before I walked out the door with our order. Pricing is also pretty good for what you're getting. It's easy to pay $20 for a "premium" sandwich these days but ours were packed with high quality bbq. As someone that travels to the pan handle frequently, I can honestly say this brisket was head and shoulders above what I can get over there. Caldwell County is one of our FAVORITE go-to restaurants, especially when we have people visiting from out-of-town! The restaurant is very family-friendly and there is plenty of seating (we especially love the mini picnic tables outside for our kiddos to sit on!) Their brisket is hands down some of the best brisket I've ever had, and I also love their corn casserole for a side. The pricing is a little more on the expensive side, but overall still fair especially for the value of the food. The one downside is that the parking lot in the restaurant is very, very small-but if you're okay with walking there is a huge lot right across the street you can park at. read more

He asked me what could have been better. The owner was passionate about his restaurant and genuinely wanted to discuss some points I mentioned in my previous review. We visited on a busier day, yet the customer service remained commendable. We opted for similar dishes to our first visit: the ribs and the brisket, mac and cheese, and the beans. The meat was incredibly tender and juicy. The ribs practically fell off the bones, and the flavor was enhanced. I am so glad we returned to give it another chance. While we don't live nearby, the experience left a lasting impression, and the food was much better. I needed to update my review as the last time I went in I noticed my bill was significantly more expensive, than my previous visit a year ago. After reviewing the receipt I realized that two sides were no longer included with your order which has increased the price which is disappointing. Maybe include one side but going ala cart for sides seems a bit abrupt. Great brisket, moist but not too fatty, the free pickles were quite tasty as well, The only side we got was a lemon Cole slaw with poppy seeds which was tasty. We LOVE Caldwell County BBQ! The Gilbert location offers the same menu as Peoria PLUS they have beef ribs Fri-Sat-Sun!! The beef ribs are so fall-off-the-bone-tender, served with a side of yummy chimmichurri (sp?) sauce that is great to mix with their house BBQ sauce. Just sayin! We also enjoyed some fatty brisket, Texas chili, Mac n cheese, and the very delicious lemon poppy seed coleslaw (Trust Me!!). They don't offer the Slushy drinks that Peoria has, but the weekend beef ribs more than makes up for that! read more
