Winner, Winner Mexi-Q Dinner! I'm a huge fan of Mexican food and BBQ, so I was excited to give this place a try. I was even able to convince my very particular Mexican wife to join me. You have to have a little patience when you get here. There was a bit of a line and the place is pretty small. Very neat and clean. Once we got through the line, we put it our order at the only counter area. This made for an upfront and close view of our order prep. With us being huge taco fans, we ordered 2 of each of their tacos (10 total), and with me a sausage fan, one link. In no time at all our order was ready. A bit of sticker shock with the total of 81.00. We found a seat inside at the counter. What a delight! We were not disappointed with the quality of the food! The brisket tacos we smokey,moist,tender and full of flavor. Brisket birriera tacos the same. If I had any complaints, they were borderline salty as was the consome. Chili verde pork was juicy, tender and mouth watering. Smoked carnitas was excellent. Unlike a lot of carnitas you find at a lot of Mexican restaurants, these weren't dry and over cooked. Tender, moist and the smoke on point. The chicken followed suit. Juicy and full of smokey deliciousness. My only real complaint was with the sausage. The texture was a little pasty. Flavor was ok. As we were eating, the owner I'm assuming, took the time to come over and asked if we were enjoying our food. Nice touch. Overall, excellent food and service! Tried the Mexi-Q for first time today with my kids and was extremely impressed! Being of Mexican descent and from So-Cal my expectations were high. I tried the birria which I normally only like when made the authentic way with goat. I was impressed by the balance and smoothness of the spices. As for sides the mac and cheese was great without being a gut bomb. The elote was spot on flavors of street corn. But the star was the Calabacitas! It reminded me so much of my grandmother's that I took an order home for my kids. Staff were extremely friendly and professional and loved that they made the rounds in the patio to make sure we were ok. After looking at the menu we decided to try this fairly new place that featured their smoked meats and we were NOT disappointed. This is a small place with limited indoor counter top seating with the majority of the seating outside and its counter service. We ordered a couple of margaritas, brisket elote, a brisket taco, a birria taco, and two chile verde tacos. The tacos are full size, cooked to order, and full of meat and goodies. After my wife finished her brisket taco she said should have only ordered one taco, then I told her she should try the chile verde taco, and she ended up eating all of it. The pork was very tender and full of flavor. The elote was good and a nice portion for two, and the brisket tacos were tender and tasty. For a Wednesday evening there was a steady flow of diners but not too busy. Glad we tried it and we want to go back for more. read more

If I could give 10 stars I would!!! We actually came to Caldwell County "on accident" because another restaurant in the area sat us down and forgot about us. We were thinking of new places to eat and Caldwell Mexi-Q had been on our list for years! We had eaten at both Caldwell County BBQ locations and it was delicious. We were pleasantly impressed with our food here!! I had the chicken and green chili tacos - excellent, flavorful, the right amount of heat, perfect portion. The frozen marg was just okay but a nice way to round out the meal with the banana pudding! The elote was good and the mac n cheese was great!! There's only one table inside - but the outdoor seating was plentiful! It was such a fun date night or get together with friends/family spot. It's probably our fav bbq in the east valley so far. So instead of standing in line at little Miss bbq this is our favorite go to. Esp for the first two items i listed above. They are so good. They do a way better job of mixing mexi and bbq together than little miss bbq does. I remember once we tried little miss bbqs burritos before at the 7th st and Dunlap location and they were absolutely disgusting. Never again. Served with a side of rich consome. Brisket sandwich (Dixie "V'') had a generous amount of smoked brisket on a soft Hawaiian sweet bun. For something so simple it was crammed with spectacular smoked Q! Poppers were okay. Would have been better if the seeds and membranes were taken out! Fire & heat was too hot to handle & bacon could have been more done (crispy) on the exterior. Maybe even a nice drizzle of honey or a sweet dipping sauce would have offset some of that flare. I've been to the other locations, but the Mexican flavor influenced location I've never been to. A second location using mesquite in one day and the strong mesquite smoke flavor here was stronger and more defined. A great brisket through and through. The pulled pork was nice and moist and also had various parts of the pork that I enjoyed. Some of the bark, some of the fatty bits, with each bite giving me a different part of the cut. My highlight was the brisket tostada. If you only get one menu item, here you go. There is no clean way of eating a tostada without looking like you murdered someone and I looked guilty of man slaughter. lol. This is just my personal opinion, but my favorite thing with smoked brisket is some pico de gallo and a tortilla. And this is great rendition of that combo I dream of. The word "fusion" doesn't really do this justice. Picture Caldwell County BBQ, which is some of the best in AZ, and meld it with absolutely delicious Mexican food dishes. You've got yourself Mexi-Q at its finest. The tacos are the way that I go here. Brisket, pulled pork, or the mouth-watering birria are all fair game. Be sure to ask for consomme on the side. It'll take whatever you order up a few notches. It'll also negate some of the spiciness if you prefer your dishes on the milder side. If you have kids that are picky eaters, they'll probably go for the side dishes. Choose from mac & cheese, beans, or elote (corn), which are all great choices. This is a not-so-hidden gem anymore. We came for Father's Day, and they had sold out of several meats but were still going strong with brisket all the way to the finish line. There's limited seating inside - it's mostly for ordering and picking up drinks. The patio is where it's at. It's thoughtfully laid out with ample seating, shade, and misters to keep customers cool year-round. Amazing spot for barbecue in Arizona. The menu is perfectly condensed to offer the best barbecue combos. We ordered the pulled pork with lemon, poppy seed coleslaw, and corn casserole. You also have the option of complementary pickles, onions, and/or jalapeños. The restaurant offers plenty of seating inside and outside. The original Caldwell County BBQ is arguably my favorite barbecue spot in the Phoenix Metro Area. Perhaps that's why I was so disappointed with Caldwell County Mexi-Q. It had been on my list for a long time so I finally tried it out... and I will not be returning. The customer service was fast and friendly, but the food was quite regrettable. I was looking forward to getting a Brisket Dog, but then upon walking in, I noticed hot dogs are not on the menu. I ended up ordering the Dixie V Brisket Sandwich which came with an individual side. I chose the Roasted Creamed Elote. I also added a Mexican-Q Twinkie (jalapeño popper) and a Smoked Carnitas Taco. I asked for an Arizona Gold BBQ Sauce and pickled onions as well, since I was taking this home to feast on. The sandwich - pretty dry brisket and not very flavorful. I had to add mayonnaise and hot sauce and BBQ sauce just to make it somewhat palatable. I barely got through it. The elote was the strangest take I've ever had on Mexican street corn. It didn't taste like it was made from fresh corn, but rather canned corn. And it had more of a bland gravy on it than a creamy, spicy, tangy sauce one would come to expect. I got almost no smoke from the smoked carnitas taco. The pickled onions I added had no vinegar flavor. I think they were simply brined in a dilute salt solution. And the Twinkie was practically inedible. Clearly it had all the seeds in it and so was an overly scorching single bite that I managed. The brisket sample I tried (and it was offered just as I was about to leave, with my order, strangely) had promise. It had a well-seasoned although fatty black pepper crust. I don't how the assembled dishes ended up being so bad. I honestly don't know how they managed to make an exciting meal into a forgettable overpriced Cafeteria-Mex (that's my term for lame Tex-Mex) experience. read more

In town for a short visit, we came across Caldwell's in search for tacos. I eat mostly plant based food but was open to make an exception after we were offered a free sample of the brisket. I was immediately transported to the little Mexican food dive joints and bars my grandfather would take me to when I was a kid in Gary. The food here is fantastic. The service was friendly as well. The Birria taco and burrito w a side of brown beans . The beans were a Smokey flavor on the traditional state , not too mushy . First off, I'm a foodie that was both raised in the restaurant industry by two chef parents and worked in the industry as well. I would have gone to culinary school if I didn't go into the military instead. With that, I understand what goes into running a restaurant so I am empathetic, but will give my honest opinion and not sugar coat my experience. That being said, we've been loyal customers of Caldwell's original BBQ location for about 7 years where the food and experience are always exceptional. Given our past experience, I've had their Mexi-Q location on my list of places to try for quite some time. We were in the area and decided to finally try it. We walked in a chatted with Fausto, we're offered a complementary piece fresh cut brisket, and explained the differences unique to this location. The location also has a few of the staples from the BBQ location like brisket, pulled pork, sausage along with their sandwiches like the Dixie V. With that, we decided to try the items unique to the Mexi-Q location by trying the guajillo pork ribs, brisket birria taco, smoked carnitas taco, smoked chile verde pork taco, Texas Twinkie, and the roasted creamed elote as a side. Star of the show...the chile verde pork. Delicious and I'd eat like 5 of those again or get in a burrito without hesitation. The ribs took second place. Tender and fall off the bone. However, I was expecting a little more of a chile kick. The rest of the items we got ranged from good to disappointing in descending order. Carnitas taco was good, but didn't have much of a smoked flavor I was expecting based on the description and definitely needed to be paired with their mild salsa verde. Quesabirria brisket taco was told to be their best seller. It was ok. Definitely didn't have the depth of flavor and kick of birria I've grown to know. Cheese was also lacking. Sadly, the consomé had zero depth of flavor, which is likely a direct reflection of the birria meat lacking in flavor too. The Texas Twinkies (per the website...fresh jalapeño stuffed with prime brisket, white cream cheese sauce, then wrapped with bacon and smoked) were second to last for us. To us, the jalapeños themselves were too small to make the item successful. The filling appeared to be cream cheese blended with brisket in food processor to the point you couldn't tell brisket was in it. The texture of the filling was almost grainy as well and the cream cheese wasn't enough to cut the kick of the jalapeño, which was seemingly stronger than other twinkies and poppers I've had before likely due to the small size and low and slow cooking method. Too be better, need to ensure bigger jalapeños so you can have space for more cream cheese in the filling. The brisket needs to be chopped and folded into the softened cream cheese. Tip I also think would a nice touch is to brush the outside with agave syrup or maybe a new agave based bbq sauce (yes please) to help offset the spice of the jalapeños. Worst in show...the roasted creamed elote. The first thing I'd say this was esquites, not elote, since it's not on the cob. That being said, the major issue is that the "creamed" component of the dish was essentially nonexistent. It was more like a liquidy corn soup that reminded us of corn in the canned corn liquid with some milk/half and half or something. The liquid as the base of the dish was simply flat in flavor. My girlfriend took a bite and simply said "nope." The dish didn't come with lime, so I had to go back inside to get some in hopes of making the dish somewhat salvageable. I ended up adding the juice of about half a lime to a pint serving. My girlfriend took one more bite and said still isn't saving it. So I had to eat the rest myself and still left about 1/4 of the container. Most disappointing thing I've ever had at Caldwell's. We love you guys and will continue to be loyal customers. However, we are going to stick with the original location, enjoying what you do best, and maybe only come for that chile verde pork if we happen to be in the area. read more
