In town for a short visit, we came across Caldwell's in search for tacos. I eat mostly plant based food but was open to make an exception after we were offered a free sample of the brisket. I was immediately transported to the little Mexican food dive joints and bars my grandfather would take me to when I was a kid in Gary. The food here is fantastic. The service was friendly as well. We ordered two brisket burritos and two brisket tacos. So, so good. We enjoyed the outdoor seating - super cute space with good music. We make a trip to AZ about once a year from Alaska. We have gone to Caldwell's BBQ and always been very please . The Mexican-q spin is equally as tasty .. had the chille verde which wax the right blend of spice. The Birria taco and burrito w a side of brown beans . The beans were a Smokey flavor on the traditional state , not too mushy . The tacos were not crispy and not soft , more a a grilled texture which was easy to bite. The burrito was a nice size for the money . First off, I'm a foodie that was both raised in the restaurant industry by two chef parents and worked in the industry as well. I would have gone to culinary school if I didn't go into the military instead. With that, I understand what goes into running a restaurant so I am empathetic, but will give my honest opinion and not sugar coat my experience. That being said, we've been loyal customers of Caldwell's original BBQ location for about 7 years where the food and experience are always exceptional. Given our past experience, I've had their Mexi-Q location on my list of places to try for quite some time. We were in the area and decided to finally try it. We walked in a chatted with Fausto, we're offered a complementary piece fresh cut brisket, and explained the differences unique to this location. The location also has a few of the staples from the BBQ location like brisket, pulled pork, sausage along with their sandwiches like the Dixie V. With that, we decided to try the items unique to the Mexi-Q location by trying the guajillo pork ribs, brisket birria taco, smoked carnitas taco, smoked chile verde pork taco, Texas Twinkie, and the roasted creamed elote as a side. Star of the show...the chile verde pork. Delicious and I'd eat like 5 of those again or get in a burrito without hesitation. The ribs took second place. Tender and fall off the bone. However, I was expecting a little more of a chile kick. The rest of the items we got ranged from good to disappointing in descending order. Carnitas taco was good, but didn't have much of a smoked flavor I was expecting based on the description and definitely needed to be paired with their mild salsa verde. Quesabirria brisket taco was told to be their best seller. It was ok. Definitely didn't have the depth of flavor and kick of birria I've grown to know. Cheese was also lacking. Sadly, the consomé had zero depth of flavor, which is likely a direct reflection of the birria meat lacking in flavor too. The Texas Twinkies (per the website...fresh jalapeño stuffed with prime brisket, white cream cheese sauce, then wrapped with bacon and smoked) were second to last for us. To us, the jalapeños themselves were too small to make the item successful. The filling appeared to be cream cheese blended with brisket in food processor to the point you couldn't tell brisket was in it. The texture of the filling was almost grainy as well and the cream cheese wasn't enough to cut the kick of the jalapeño, which was seemingly stronger than other twinkies and poppers I've had before likely due to the small size and low and slow cooking method. Too be better, need to ensure bigger jalapeños so you can have space for more cream cheese in the filling. The brisket needs to be chopped and folded into the softened cream cheese. Tip I also think would a nice touch is to brush the outside with agave syrup or maybe a new agave based bbq sauce (yes please) to help offset the spice of the jalapeños. Worst in show...the roasted creamed elote. The first thing I'd say this was esquites, not elote, since it's not on the cob. That being said, the major issue is that the "creamed" component of the dish was essentially nonexistent. It was more like a liquidy corn soup that reminded us of corn in the canned corn liquid with some milk/half and half or something. The liquid as the base of the dish was simply flat in flavor. My girlfriend took a bite and simply said "nope." The dish didn't come with lime, so I had to go back inside to get some in hopes of making the dish somewhat salvageable. I ended up adding the juice of about half a lime to a pint serving. My girlfriend took one more bite and said still isn't saving it. So I had to eat the rest myself and still left about 1/4 of the container. Most disappointing thing I've ever had at Caldwell's. We love you guys and will continue to be loyal customers. However, we are going to stick with the original location, enjoying what you do best, and maybe only come for that chile verde pork if we happen to be in the area. read more

The man who took our order very kindly explained a few items on the menu to my visiting relatives. My boyfriend and I eat here all the time! We ended up finding this restaurant after getting tired of going to Joe's barbecue and having the food be inconsistent almost every single time. When we first started coming to the restaurant ribs were not on the menu, but once they put the ribs on the menu that changed everything for us. Caldwell county Mexi-Q 's ribs put any other barbecue place that we've been to here in Arizona to absolute SHAME! We also love their chili Mac & Cheese and Grandma's Calabcitas! The barbecue sauces are all great and their Mexican food is just as good as the barbecue options. The restaurant is small but it's nice and clean and there's a large outdoor area ... recently they just added blended margaritas to the menu which are very affordable. I love Caldwell County BBQ so I was excited to try this Mexican inspired version. The guy serving me, a Latino, told me this is better than the original. As a Latina, reading Guajillo Pork Rib and Smoked Chile Verde definitely peaked my interest. I've had Chipotle's Garlic Guajillo steak so I assumed this would be just as good, if not better. Sadly, it was not. Not enough Guajillo to make it stand out. Hardly any Guajillo flavor. I had to add Arizona Gold sauce to make the ribs taste good and that just defeated the little Guajillo flavor in the rib. We also ordered the Creamed Corn Elote and Julio's Mac & Cheese. The Elote was good. Julio's Mac & Cheese had zero heat for a macaroni & cheese with green chiles. It needed some heat! Speaking of heat and chiles. I was looking forward to the Mexican Twinkie aka a Brisket stuffed Jalapeño popper. It was tasty until the heat from the jalapeño over powered the rest of the flavors. I came here as a +1 for my boyfriend's work Christmas party and WOW, I'm so glad I did. I love good smoked meats and this place, definitely is the stellar. I ended up getting the El General Patton which has not 1, not 2, but 3 different meats on a bun. It was fantastic! He ended up getting a pulled pork sandwich which was also tasty and well smoked (of course). I also couldn't resist the corn casserole and mac & cheese. The corn casserole reminded me of a sweet corn cake that I adore and that I make at home as a savory and sweet side dish. The mac was so cheesy and tasted high quality. Aside from the savory foods, they also have a variety of desserts to enjoy. We ended up getting some Texas Sheet Cake and a molasses cookie too. Both of these were delicious as well. Amazing, seriously everything from the people that work there, the bbq itself, and even the banana pudding. The only question I have for myself is why haven't I checked this joint out sooner! I wanted to sample a few things, so I decided to try the pulled pork and chicken (each $10/half pound), an individual size of Grandma's Calabacitas ($3), and a banana pudding ($6) to go. Both meats were delicious, and I especially loved how after slicing the chicken, they lathered more of the cooking juices onto it. As for the calabacitas, this was probably the surprise of everything I tried and would highly recommend. It's a stew of tomatoes, calabacitas (similar to a squash), and spices, topped with melted cheese. To be honest, a bowl of this with some bread for dipping and I would be all set. Except, last but not least, I would still give in to their banana pudding. Absolutely delicious - layers of nilla wafers, whipped cream, and velvetly pudding with subtle smokey notes. So disappointed on so many levels. I'm a big taco and bbq fan but it seemed things just weren't in our favor for our visit... Customer Service was bad, Food was cold/old, and we felt like we were more a nuisance than welcomed customers. (I say that as sauces were taken off our table as we just sat down) Would Highly recommend "not" coming the last hour as not all items were available. Staff didn't make us feel welcome as they were packing up to close. It was clearly our 1st time and we really got no guidance with the questions we were asking. When the food came out, the portions didn't make sense... I don't like 'scaled bbq' but the 2 brisket tostadas had more meat than my $15 Brisket sandwich/ The taco was cold & soggy & the Mac & cheese was the 'end of the day' food. The restaurant itself is super small and will hold maybe 15ppl max...if you can deal with everyone ordering standing right over you while you eat. Lol! They do offer outdoor seating and would be great during patio season. Ordered a birria taco and a brisket taco with a Coke and it cost me $21. You decide if it's worth it. Food would've been fine if I didn't keep biting into something hard in my birria taco. Anyway, service was quick and the guys helping behind the counter was friendly.
