Stopped in for a light lunch on Easter. Great find! My wife, daughter, and I shared the duck flat bread, short rib tacos, and calamari from the small plates. My wife and I had a pear salad and panzanella. Everything was flavorful. The flat bread had a roasted garlic spread that made it really interesting. The calamari had a light, crispy batter and came with a light citrus dipping sauce. Alternatively there was a more standard red sauce on the plate that tasted like crushed, fresh tomatoes. I enjoyed them with a touch of each. Lots of flavor going through the tacos. The pear salad had a lightly seared romaine lettuce with blue cheese and walnuts. Great texture and complementary flavors. My wife loved the panzanella. To wash it down I had the grapefruit shandy from Harpoon. The slightly sour shandy went with most of the food. Casual ambiance, friendly but not annoying staff, and music like Rusted Roots in the background made it a must come back experience. If they add more spice, a la North, into the menu flavor profile, I'll be happy to go 5 stars. read more

We decided to try C&B based on the reviews. I had the Duck Flatbread, my wife had the Waffle and Chicken, and my daughter had a plain waffle. 1st: not kid friendly, but they made a plain waffle to satisfy my daughter so that was great! The waffle itself was nothing spectacular, just average. 2nd: The Duck Flatbread was average, small portion. I definitely left hungry and didn't think it was a $12 entree. Again, nothing to rave about. I wouldn't even say the dish is spectacularly unique. 3rd: My wife loved the Waffle & Chicken. This was unique. One would never think about waffles, syrup and shredded chicken, but it was quite good. Final thoughts: The menu is relatively small, but I can see this place more for the atmosphere than the food. The service is slow. It took about 20 minutes for the food to come out and then when we were ready to pay, two different wait staff members (to include our primary one) walked by my table where the check with credit card was standing up, ready to be collected and processed. So, being a new Newport resident, I doubt I would come back for the food. read more

This is a new place on a block of already popular spots. But check it out. We began with delicious cocktails (Blueberry mojito and Princess C) and appetizers. The mac and cheese is to die for, with pulled pork and crispy fried onions, and probably a good idea to split. It's delicious and filling. I had the meat and potatoes, an American version of Steak Frites. Delicious and meaty, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. I paired it with the Malbec by the glass, which was a healthy pour and a great combination. My companion had the baked Cod and loved it. We were too full for dessert, and will definitely come back here. It is listed as an appetizer so I also ordered the burger - I enjoyed the burger and a few of the fries (couldn't eat them all) but did not need them as the Mac & Cheese was really enough. We live about a 20 minute walk away, and often come down to the Broadway restaurants.... gotta say that C&B is just a nice mix of low-key, good variety and fabulous food, great service. It's nice to see it all working out. Rich works his a** off, as do other staffers, it's a nice friendly place with a welcome vibe. Ask about "those masks" .... !! Favorites: mac 'n cheese, rosted beet salad, the duck confit flatbread... but it's all good! ....and oh!... they have a PROPER red wine glass! Oh Caleb & Broad....Definitely a great find, once this place gains more popularity (which it will). Hopefully, I will still be able to easily find a table! Was in town with a couple of girlfriends for a quick weekend getaway, met up with a couple friends who lived in the area for dinner before drinks but had not planned on where. We could not get a reservation anywhere that was shorter than an hour or an hour and a half, (Red Parrot was REDIC and Diego's was not even an option), it was rediculous and aggrivating. One of our local friends suggested we go to Caleb & Broad which was fairly new and I was just so annoyed we couldn't find anywhere to get dinner that I was willing to try it. I am now more than glad that we stopped into this restuarant for dinner because it is just fabulous! Young, trendy crowd vibes. You walk in and right away it is so chill and relaxing. The waitress was curtious and very welcoming. (cool white ear gauges). We asked for water with extra lemons and she brought us a whole bowl! My favorite part of the restuarant is the art, turn my head to the left there is a display of Lucha Libre mask, turn my head to the right beautiful bight colored art lining the walls. Limited menu but very creative options. Looked like they only had a 2 chef line so the focus was more on the taste and quality which I love. Fried green beans for an app, YUM! And I ordered the half chicken for my main entree, crispy skin and moist meat. The mashed potatoes were to die for, I'm not kidding. And the green beans were cooked to perfection. Simplicity in the way that the chef prepares the meal was just wondrous. Very impressed C&B you guys have my heart and I will be returning every time I'm back in town! I'm from New York and I didn't know any restaurants in the area. I was recommended this place by some workers at the Newport Storm Brewery. The only odd thing I found is that it opens at 5, but I realized all the restaurant in the area open at 5. I was at the place around 4. Luckily I caught the staff fixing up their outdoor seating. The staff was very nice and patient, they recommended some things to kill time while we wait for the opening. My girlfriend and i went for a long walk all the way down to the docks and back. We got to the restaurant just in time. It was 5 minutes before they opened and we could tell people in the area was eyeing the place and ready to go. We went in at 5 and got a table outside. The place actually filled up very quickly. By the time we got our drinks it was getting pretty full. The restaurant itself is very nice and clean. They had opened up the front to have the outside connected with the inside so it looked like one big place. The food was very good. For appetizers we ordered the short rib tacos and the mac and cheese. Both were very flavorful and well made. Luckily we came on Monday and they were having this special where all the Entrees are $10. So we ordered 3 plates: the sticky duck, ribs, steak and potatoes. We did a mistake of ordering 3 plates because the portions were a bit larger than expected. The steak was 10 oz and cooked right to the point we asked for. The sticky duck was Korean BBQ style and wasn't spicy (Which is a great thing in my case because I can't handle spicy things at all). The ribs had a chipotle sauce and the meat was falling off the bone, and once again was not spicy at all. All the food we ordered was really good I would come back here anytime I visit Newport again. read more

My friend and I sat at the bar and had a couple of glasses of wine. The crowd is mixed - older crowd having dinner but also young families or younger crowd having drinks/food. This food was really fantastic. I had the duck confit, but I also tried a little of the mac and cheese and the cod. The menu was small, but covered a lot of ground. All of the spicing was very distinctive and refreshing. The duck confit had many distinct components that were by no means necessary, but greatly complimented the dish. My only complaint was the portion size, a little smaller than I would have liked (although I ate dinner here at 6 and it was my first meal of the day, so my hunger may have played into that). Extremely fun and relaxing place to go in Newport. Outside seating when the weather is nice, u shape bar and then a more intimate dinning section with corner booths that'll make you feel like you've got the whole place to your own. I really like the steak with a side of mash and Brussels. Surf and turf tacos are great after work snack with a drink. Also the cod is delicious. Had a very good meal here tonight. Because of the reviews we tried the pretzels and cheese and they were great! We also tried the tacos, one fish and one steak. The fish was way better than the steak. For the entree I had the Duck Confit with garlic mashed and spinach and a poached egg. My BF had the short ribs and papardelle pasta. The meat could have had more flavor but other than that it was good. For dessert we had the warm chocolate cookie with vanilla ice cream and candied bacon. Very yum! Really, really good food! A funky bar/restaurant with interesting, nicely plated dishes and adequate service. 2 of us ate at the bar on our first visit, 5 of us sat in a booth on a return trip. Bartender was great, table service was okay but sparse. Not bad, just far from top notch. The food though, is why we went back. During the two visits, we had the Mac and cheese appetizer (with smoked mozzarella, pulled pork and fried onions!), calamari, and the short rib tacos. The roasted beet salad was superb and I'd go back just for that. Entries included the half chicken, burger and fries, steak, and the best was the duck confit, topped with a fried poached egg! Nice place, good service just don't order the lobster mofungo and think you are getting lobster in anyway shape or form. I actually asked if they messed up my order when it came out, because I could not locate any lobster on my plate. Turned out the little fried strips of something on top of the dish was the lobster. Picked this place out on a whim with friends since we were in the area, I'll definitely be back. Drinks with fun names like the zombie add to the charm and all of us loved our meals. I had the half chicken and it was ginormous but perfectly cooked. My other two friends had the mac and cheese and a burger and both were quite pleased. Only down side was our waitress couldn't seem to figure out how to split a check three ways so one of us got charged for the majority of the meal. My SO ordered the steak and eggs; the steak was over cooked and the potato was undercooked. There was not a lot of people there and it took over 30 minutes for our food to come out. Quite a gem this place is... I live in the neighborhood and have been here 5-6 times since they opened. Needless to say, I quite enjoy this addition to "Restaurant Row". From the diversity of the small plate menu, to the stellar(and consistent!!) service, Caleb and Broad stand out among the meat and seafood-driven establishments on Broadway. I especially appreciate their vegan options since Newport restaurants aren't known for their vegan fare. Additionally, we always seem to score in the service dept. as Tyler usually waits on us. From the first time we had him to the last time, he's always positive, energetic and incredible customer-driven. I bring new people here constantly because of the entire experience. Great food and drinks. unfortunately my last experience was awful. I go here a lot for drinks and brunch with friends normally. I went to get drinks with my boyfriend and the manager carded me (no biggie) then asked for a second form and said my Id was fake. I'm 23 and my showed my valid drivers license and my credit card and he still did not believe me. He was extremely rude and made me sigh the book only after I said to call the cops to check my ID and prove it's real. He also told me I could just leave. Which now looking back I wish I did and gave my business to another bar especially during this pandemic. I understand taking precaution and carding people before selling alcohol but if you can't tell a real ID from a fake one and still question it with second forms there's a problem. As most of the other reviews here say, the pulled pork mac & cheese is amazing! Also the $10 Mondays are a great deal. The short ribs with pasta are really really good. Have also been for brunch. Everybody was happy with their meal. My only complaint is I expected there to be chunks of linguica in the breakfast bowl, but they were like bacon bit sized. Couldn't taste it at all. I definitely want to go back and try the chicken and waffles and baked French pretzel for brunch. And bonus, they take Newport Dine out! read more

My family and I dined at Caleb and Broad on a Tuesday night, arriving at 8:30pm. It was busy and looked comfy and the menu was impressive. Kind of a hipster place, interesting menu fonts, cleverly described. The restaurant was understaffed and service was poor. As for the food - appetizers - Mussels were excellent, calamari very good too. It went downhill from there. Ordered the "Meat and Potatoes" - which turns out to be an unknown cut of meat - super lean and more than likely tenderized for 2 days. Not good. Why not give people a recognizable cut of beef? .awful soggy fries Seemed like they were cooked then sat around steaming on top of each other. Lack of attention to detail. The Shrimp Curry - simply awful. Not even curry - I don't know what it was. Overly sweet - not enough shrimp. We should have stuck with appetizers! I would not go back. read more

We stopped by after we visited the Newport mansions. We were starving. The menu looked so fun and the place looked cool with their awesome art work. First and most service was sooooo slow, which did not sit well with two starving people. The restaurant was pretty empty, but it took them forever to take our order and even longer for the food to come out. We are used to that NYC efficiency so it's forgiven. Now to the food. I ordered the seared tuna salad and my boyfriend ordered the Fried Chix. We paid extra $2 to sub the fries for brussel sprouts. His fried chicken sandwich was yummy. The brussel sprouts fell short though-the big pieces were soggy while the smaller pieces were completely burnt. The cook obviously didn't know brussel sprouts cook extremely unevenly if you don't have even sized pieces. They were also kind of tasteless. My boyfriend even joked that they are like my brussel sprouts and that's not a compliment. (He cringed and announced his disgust for the vegetable since that was his first time of having brussel sprouts. He later changed his mind after having them at Uchiko in Austin.) The seared tuna salad was even worse. It sounded so yummy with all of my favorite ingredients -raw tuna, sticky rice, avocado, and arugula. It's pretty such an open tuna roll on a bed of arugula, which I was in the mood for. I thought the dressing was the wild card since I usually hate the sesame/wasabi kind of dressing, but it was the rice. The description said lime chile sticky rice, but it was clearly not sticky rice! It wasn't even sushi rice! It was old rice that sat outside for too long or even sat in the fridge! They clearly didn't know what sticky rice is and probably had in mind sushi rice, but they definitely didn't know how to make it. The seared tuna was quite tasteless as well so the whole salad was just sad because everything individually tasted bland (not talking about salt) and they definitely don't go together. All in all it's one of those restaurants that try to be innovative, but fails short. Stick with bar food and beer if you are going there. Parking was much easier than the smaller streets in the area so that's a plus. read more
