Johnny's is located within the Wyndham Hotel in Middletown RI. My wife and I often stay here as the hotel is excellent, however this review relates to Johnny's. As noted above we have eaten here in the past. We have dined with large as well as small groups and have always been pleased. The place is beautiful, especially in the summer. The outdoor patio bar boasts a great view of Green End Pond. A great place to grab a drink and an appetizer. We started out on the patio and returned later for dinner. Based on our sub par experience the night before (see prior review) I was committed to having a great meal. We were not disappointed. I started with the clam chowder. Delicious. Flavorful and loaded with clams. My wife opted for the lobster bisque In an effort to negate the lousy lobster bisque she had on the previous night. Mission accomplished. She described it as buttery and creamy. Essentially the perfect bisque flavor. Contained within the bisque was a tremendous chunk of delicious lobster meat . For dinner, I chose the baked stuffed shrimp. It was delicious. Cooked to perfection with delicious stuffing, rice, pilaf, and broccoli. My only complaint is that I believe there should be more than 4 shrimp at this price. My wife selected the Pasta Bolognese. A dish that she has had and several other restaurants in several states and she ranked this right at the top of the list. Plenty of beef and pork combined with a tasty Italian sauce. When in the Newport area I suggest you skip the over hyped restaurants and head to Johnny's for a delicious meal with great atmosphere. read more

Who makes a grilled Ruben sandwich with corn beef that is like eating a piece of leather.. lord knows I tried . Took a couple of bites couldn't even chew it .. extremely tough, almost like eating fried bacon that was overcooked. The coleslaw was terrible too . Chopped cabbage no seasoning , no mayo , no nothing . Raw cabbage !!! Finally decided to send it back, ordered a simple cheeseburger, it was not great. Asked the waitress to cut it in half she had to consult with another waitress asking, can I send this back to be cut in half The bill comes with an automatic 20% gratuity added, large group of us. I pay with a 100 bill, was very pricey and the waitress asked if I wanted change !! I said yes please I see your tip is included in the bill ... really a 40.00 tip! I was not impressed. Menu choices for everyone . Salads were generous , my only criticism is that a Cobb salad should include the protein not be extra! Lobster roll was full of chunks of lobster in a wonderfully toasted roll . Cheeseburger triple decker was great! Service was attentive and polite. I walked in at 8:15 for my reservation and the host asked me "what's up"? Umm..I am here for my reservation. She said there are no tables or food for at least 25 minutes. Maybe sit at the bar if you want something faster. So I sat at the bar. I will prologue the rest of this review with the fact that I enjoy craft cocktails and downtempo music. This was anything but that. If you like bad drinks served out of a plastic cups while the band plays frat rock (Margarita Vill), this is the place for you. This restaurant was attached to the hotel we were staying in and honestly it wasn't that impressive. When we first walked on there was a strong fish odor that was pretty offensive. I had the fried chicken sandwich, which was nothing to write home about. Wife had a veggie burger with a confusingly spicy thousand Island dressing. Fries were good however. I just want to give a shoutout to Steve at Johnny's at the Wyndham for saving us last month during the boat show week. We needed a last minute reservation for 11 dignitaries from other countries during this busy week and JOHNNY's really stepped up to accommodate our group ( after being cancelled last minute by another restaurant on Ocean Drive, without explanation). Johnny's provided a great set up for dinner, with FANTASTIC food- lobster dinners and fish dinners too. Service was impeccable! Our party was even able to sit outdoors on the patio and enjoy the fire pit overlooking the water at sunset- definitely a bonus to a great evening. Thanks to Steve, the owner's son, for bending over backwards to accommodate our large group. You turned what could have been a disaster into a phenomenal evening. THANKSGIVING EDITION Came here for a Thanksgiving meal at 3:30 pm reservation for 4 people. Arrived 10 minutes early and were told to wait since 7 other parties arrived before us. Tips: Make sure to get back in line because they're so busy they might forget to call you up. They have a plated dinner from 5:30-9 PM but why pay more for less food? Go to the buffet from 11 AM to 5 ish As usual for buffets, proteins are served towards the end of the line so don't fill up too much on the starches. The Spread: Roasted Turkey: seemed to be just white meat, no legs or other dark meat hot tip, GO FOR THE TURKEY SKIN! Top round of beef: cut right there on the buffet line for you, comes with au jus, tender and just like you'd get from any other buffet Scrod: wasn't stuffed, moreso topped with Rtiz-like crackers, a little soggy but tender, soft, light, and appetizing Whipped potatoes: red skin on, average Butternut squash and candied yams: hard to tell the difference between the two since they were both mashed smooth and simular color, 'candied yams' just had 10 tiny marshmallows and wish it was more sweet, both are sweeter alternatives to the regular mashed potatoes Green beans: did had sliced almonds but were sitting in a shallow pool of water, not the most appetizing but played their part as obligatory cooked greens, wish they were more flavorful Sage Stuffing: for the very moist stuffing lovers, no part of this was crunchy, traditional flavor Mac and cheese: wish it had more panko topping, nothing to write home about Fruit Salad: didn't try Pecan Salad: like a harvest salad with cranberries, mandarin slices, blue cheese and pecans, a little over dressed but delishously fresh and sweet Caesar salad: crisp and traditional Assorted bread: pumpkin, cranberry walnut and banana were moist and soft Bread rolls: light and airy, low butter content, comes with cold butter but I'd rather go for the other food Gravy: standard Cranberry sauce: not jelly, came unblened/strained (some watery some pulpy) which helped to cut the richness Assorted Pies: sat on a separate table, fresh whip cream SO GOOD pecan: the bottom half of the filling felt like eating straight up corn syrup, preferred the crunchy pecans on top pumpkin: decent berry: sweet carrot cake: decent Was seated and immediately able to partake in the buffet. Water was filled regularly. The staff was pretty nice. The food served was as advertised. My only complaint: we snagged the last time reservation so the staff was transitioning to the plated dinner service. Instead of communicating last call for food, they simply removed the available dinner plates, had the beef slicer leave, and stopped replenishing dishes. I would have loved clearer communication. Traditional fixings for an 'affordable' price ($164 with 20% tip for 4 ppl) and hassle free day. Would come back again! This is a solid 3 1/2 for food, and at least a 4 for ambiance and service. I didn't take a picture of the 12oz steak I had but it was a perfectly cooked steak that came with potatoes and garlic green beans that were also perfectly al dente. The flavors were solid but not spectacular. A friend had the Bolognese but said it was ok not great. Sat at the bar which was outdoors but covered. It feels so good to give a five star review and be 100% satisfied with your meal. I had the lobster mac & cheese which can be very hit or miss depending on where you are. I have gotten it places that have left me very disappointed. I loved the dish I got here, I do want to add though that I asked for no breadcrumbs and that they did not bake it as I feel like that typically dries it out. My husband got the seafood platter and loved it he said it was nice and light so it didn't give you that heavy feeling. The clam cakes were delicious cooked perfectly. We got a few drinks that were really good, steady as she goes and a peach lemonade. Tasted great and the perfect amount of liquor so you don't feel like you were drinking juice. In full disclosure, we visited this restaurant with a tour group and had a buffet instead of ordering from the menu. When we arrived, there was another large party there and it took them a while to clear out (the other guests moved chairs from our tables to theirs). The staff took a little while to set up our buffet but then started calling our tables over. We ate at many restaurants on our trip but our group said the baked scrod here was among the best we had. The restaurant is in a hotel so I bet it attracts a lot of guests. It has pretty simple decor and appears to have a nice patio. There was another small group here enjoying someone's birthday. Enjoyed an afternoon at this patio bar before we hit up the beach. Beautiful views and nice breeze! I really enjoyed a drink special called "steady as she goes" made with elderberry and vodka. It was light and refreshing. Calamari was really good with the wasabi sauce. Hubs and I then split a tuna melt. I would've like the bread toasted a bit more but overall it was very good. I would've given five stars had our server been a bit more attentive. He never came back to check on our food or to ask if we needed anything else. I dined here 3x during my 35 day stay in Newport because it was attached to my hotel. The service was good and food ok. Not much flavor. The restaurant looks nice inside and they have jazz music on the wknds. Check out food pics. I left more info with the pictures. The salad was basically a $20 salad. Lettuce, one egg, bacon, feta, avocado and salmon. The quality does not compare to restaurants with similar pricing. This place is overpriced. Went for thanksgiving buffet. Food was ok but its ridiculous you add 20% tip for parties over 6. Three times the people at my table had to take their dirty plates off the table and put it on dirty dish tray stand. This is while wait staff was huddled together talking over near the beef carving station. I'm not against tipping but for god sakes their only job was to bring drinks and clear dirty plates. I went for the first time on Mother's Day. The hostess told us to wait, even though we had a reservation, no big deal. Then 10-15 minutes goes by and multiple parties are being sat. My mom went to talk to her and she said "we have many parties at the same time as you, miss, it is Mother's Day" my quiet mom didn't say anything. I called Wednesday and confirmed and was told that if the patio is full, we could be seated on the terrace - SAME VIEW. This is what happen. All I can say is this is one of those restaurants that you get forced into because you're staying at the Wyndham Newport hotel I just realized they have no affiliation with each other and the restaurant rents space from the hotel that makes a lot more sense because the woman Chelsea that thinks she runs the catering service is an absolute bitch she hates it when people have a good time she'll immediately cut you down the bartenders are older than dirt and very unfriendly the food is not bad but after staying here for almost 2 months it seems like they get more mad at you because you have the type of money to live in a resort but the fact of the matter is the restaurant needs some work it's bringing down the Wyndham read more

I live in Massachusetts and made an 8pm reservation for dinner It took us an hour and 20 minutes to drive there. We arrived at 7:30pm. There's was a large wedding outside. When we entered the hostess told us that unfortunately we where going to have to wait about 45 min to an hour to be waited on after our reservation because there was only 4 staff members in the kitchen. My fiancé asked to speak to the manager and when she came Out she instantly had an attitude. She was a nasty big mouth. Told us we would have to wait 30 -45 minutes what's the big deal. This is after our 8pm reservation we would have to wait. She was the nastiest, most Unprofessional "manager" I have ever come across. My fiancé had a few choice words with her but something tells me she is used to it. At first I told him to be quiet until I heard her say I dont know what the big deal is and to go somewhere else id we didn't like it. She told us it's not a big deal that we drove all that way and had to wait and she didn't have to tell anyone that they are short staffed. She kept sayin " I said We would accommodate you!" Why would I want to eat at a place where we are being spoken to like trash . There was another couple that left as well before us because of the same thing. She told us to get out and we couldnt eat in "her" restaurant. I'm pretty sure she's an employee just like anyone else there. Also told us to have fun waiting 2 hours to eat somewhere else. After we went to our car she came storming out smoking a cigarette and throwing f bombs out on her phone. Maybe if your a manager and you are short staffed you shouldn't be outside smoking on your phone letting your staff drown. I get times are tough and I'm sympathetic towards the staff working short with a leader that becomes unhinged easily BUT at least have the courtesy to mention that you may not be served for up to an hour after your reservation before accepting one. We came here in the winter and found this place very convenient with good food, service, and atmosphere. It was convenient for us since we were staying in the Wyndham hotel for an overnight trip to Newport - seeing the Mansions and ice skating on Goat Island. We had a good mix of the appetizers over two meals. For main course we had the fried seafood combo and the shrimp and feta noodles. They were all good. The only disappointment was the desserts. We waited a while for our orders to be taken. The place wasn't that busy, but maybe the wedding reception in the ballroom nearby caused some issues. A while later, we got our bread basket. And proceeded to wait some more. Over thirty minutes since placing our order, food arrived. Baked oysters Surprisingly good! Gooey melted cheese (not just mozarella!) on top of spinach and oysters.
