We chose Caleb & Broad from the Restaurant week advertisement. For off season on a Monday night the place was pleasantly busy. Instead of taking advantage of the Restaurant Week special, we loved the fact that we stumbled on to the $10 Entrees Monday night special!! (Tuesday is 1/2 price bottles of wine). For appetizers we had Asian shrimp kabob which had a perfectly paired fruit compote, but the winner was the Pulled Pork Mac-n-cheese! Topped with hand made French Fried Onion strips it was completely fabulous!!!!! For our main meals I got the chipotle ribs which were very good but again the hubby got the winner of the two entrees when he went out of his normal comfort zone and got the Duck confit, completely delicious! I had a great experience here recently! The service was extremely friendly, and the food I had was delicious. I didn't get any of the entrees as I wasn't all that hungry, but between the bar snacks menu [be sure to ask for this if you aren't at the bar] and the appetizers I was completely satisfied. The mac 'n cheese was to die for. I would order this every time there, and everyone in my group who tried it agreed. We also indulged in the fried chicken skins... not the healthiest choice, but definitely a satisfying one. The Chef walked by our table as well, and was extremely friendly. Overall the service was great, no long waits for anything from seating/drinks/food. Cute restaurant on Broadway. We were looking for a good brunch spot and we stumbled across this place. We were there about 15 minutes before their posted opening but the bartender was super friendly and invited us in for a drink at the bar. He made us two great Bloody Mary's which went down quickly. We started with the mussels which were delicious and then had their veggie frittata which was outstanding. We also had the duck flatbread but it wasn't our favorite. Great selection of beer & wine. I can't say enough about how much I love this place. The cool, local artwork, the fun, funky atmosphere, the incredibly awesome and friendly staff, great drinks and beer and the food is always delicious and amazing. I go there every week! Sometimes twice a week haha. One of my favorite dishes are their mussels. They're never sandy, and they come with tomatoes and fennel and this citrus cream that I could literally just pour in a bowl by itself and drink. Their mac and cheese is phenomenal, and their surf and turf tacos are to die for. I don't think I've ever had a dish here that I don't like. Go see Tara on Sundays or Tuesdays behind the bar!!! Wanting to try somewhere new to us in Newport, my wife and I visited Caleb and Broad with high hopes. And we were not disappointed. We started with the mac and cheese and the tacos. Everything was great. Very fresh. Tastey, although the the meat in the mac and cheese could've used just a touch more of flavoring, that's definitely just my opinion. For entrees I did the Steak and Potatoes, the wife did the pork special of the day. The oddly shaped, seemingly well done looking piece of meat I was served initially concerned me. These concerns were soon alleviated as I cut in and was met with a perfectly cooked medium steak that definitely ranks up there with the best I've ever had. Juicy and flavorful, I would've licked the plate. Fortunately I had the fries to soak up the extra drippings, so such a display was not necessary. Came here after a game against Newport FC for an amateur soccer league here in RI. Service was quick and friendly. The girls were very attentive to our needs and quickly deployed a booster seat for the little guy. We ordered Mac and Cheese, Pork Benny, and Blacked Steak with Eggs and they were all very good. The Max and Cheese was my least favorite, but the pork made it more appealing than it looked. The eggs benny and steak were very good. The blackened steak was delicious and cooked right, but we were never asked how we wanted it cooked. Overall very satisfied with eating here and will be coming back when in the area. My family and I ate dinner here while vacationing in Newport. The service was polite and quick, and they were very accommodating. My brother and his partner passingly mentioned to our server that they would be splitting a sushiritto. When our food came out, the kitchen had actually put a half portion of the sushiritto on two separate plates! It was a simple, small gesture, but it was a nice touch that I've never seen a restaurant make. The whole family was very pleased by the quality and the quantity of the food. Start: A couple was in front of me and they must have been regulars because they wanted to be seated at the bar. Bar was full. Place seems like a local spot. Think Cheers vibe. The couple goes to the bar, then the man at the host stand says hello to me and asks if I want to look at a menu. Hmmm, this rubbed me the wrong way because why not me would you like a table first? That was off putting and assumptive. It really annoyed me but I let it go and told him I wanted a seat for one. I would have thought I had on a EAGLES shirt in Patriots country (I didn't and even if I did it wouldn't warrant that reception) The options were a high top or a table in the middle. I choose a high top near the door. Also the host at the door never asked any other patrons if they wanted to see the menu as they came through the door he just asked them how many for dinner.... Now that the admin stuff is out the way, here goes nothing. The server and service were great. Very attentive and pleasant. I came on Monday and to my benefit they run a Monday special where all the entrees are $10. And the entrees aren't your average burger and fries, they have a nice selection of them. It's a steal of a deal! Appetizer: Short rib tacos. They were meh. There was a duel between the sauces, one was sweet and the other was spicy. I get the sweet and spicy but for this taco it seems they should go with one of them because they both were strong flavors on their own so instead of complimenting each other they we're contending with one another so the flavors were getting muddled and lost for me. The short rib was tender and plentiful but not seasoned at all. A lil salt and pepper on the short rib prior to plating would help a ton. Entree: Tuna "Says A Me" LISTEN, DO YOU HEAR ME SCREAMING? THIS DISH WAS OUTSTANDING! A collection of flavors done very well which lead to a layered flavor explosion as I ate the dish.Sesame crusted tuna over wasabi rice and tempura sweet potato with some super yummy spicy mayo. This dish should really have its own menu because it was so amazing. I'm definitely going to return to get this dish and I will have no qualms about paying full price for it. It was terrible, dry, and flavorless. There were 2 huge potato wedges in the middle of the sandwich. That just added to the bland flavor. The BBQ ribs sandwich was okay. The Burger was okay. It is in the downtown section of Newport away from the water (and hoards of tourists.) we were sat in the back in a really awkward booth, you can barely squeeze into it and when you do, the huge vent above you is constantly blowing AC downwards. This might be ok in the dead heat of the summer but not when it's 20 degrees out. We (like the next group after us) asked to be moved to a different spot. I ordered the steak and potatoes, it was good. The fries were crispy but the plate needs a little something else to freshen it up. Very disappointing.... For dinner we decided on trying random appetizers. The surf and turf tacos were tasty. The steak taco was far superior than the fish. We ordered the tuna sashimi which was delicious, but can't really get that wrong. The duck flat bread was so tasteless and chewy that my husband and I both have sour looks to each other after our first bite. We NEVER send back food, but this was unacceptable. When neither of us can eat it, it not worth paying for it. We asked for the muscles instead. BLAH!!!!! They were just as bad as the flatbread. I came here during the winter and had a fantastic experience watching a Bruins game with my girlfriend. We had a late lunch that day so we were planning on just getting drinks and a couple of appetizers to share. Since it was close to zero degrees outside, I ordered the Zombie to make me think of a warmer climate with the rum and pineapple juice perfectly blended together. My girlfriend ordered the princess c and was so pleased with it that she ordered a second one before the end of the first period. For appetizers, we ordered the fried calamari and the pretzel sticks. The fried calamari was on par with most calamari with a nice crispy exterior. But the pretzel sticks were phenomenal and made me want to come back the next time I am in Newport. read more

My friends and I were looking for a new place to eat outside and drink some good beer and we made the right choice! We came on a Friday night around 9 (thank goodness they had bar food and were serving till 11:00 pm, such a plus in my book). We sat outside and ordered the potato chips, homemade jerky, and pretzel sticks (another plus in my book, pretzels = heaven). The beer list was extensive as well. My friend ordered a beer that would give some money to the Virgin Islands (who were just hit with Hurricane Irma). She didn't end up liking the beer so asked our waiter if she could order a different kind, he asked if it wasn't her usual type of beer she orders and she said no, but she'll still buy both beers to give to charity too. He came back with her second order and said it was on him (sweet act of kindness) When it was time for our bill we were shocked and couldn't believe how reasonable the total was (even joked that we should get some more food/beer). Overall, a great experience and definitely will be returning soon! read more

As a pescetarian its hard to find a restaurant that offers multiple options for dinner. Caleb & Broad not only has fish options but complete vegetarian and vegan dishes..that actually fill you up and taste delicious! I had the Veggie Noodles for dinner the other night and was blown away with how perfectly the tempeh was cooked (which is rare to find). I also consistently go back for the black bean falafel sandwich and the slamming brussel sprout slaw that's on it. The cod dish is also a top fave. It's served on top of garlic bread which allows for a perfectly dipped slice of bread with the dishes flavors. The pear salad is to die for.. And not to mention their brunch options, which I could eat every weekend. The spin the chef takes on classic dishes truly is a work of culinary art. I had such high expectations for here. I waited a long time to try it, because I wanted it to be perfect. I had heard so many good things about it and basically memorized the menu. I had come for drinks/bar food before, and was pleased. The drink options are so fun! Gster and I came for dinner one night, and was ready to be wow'ed. You actually are past the sidewalk and almost in the street, which is superb for people watching, but due to the construction made it a little dirty. We got the fried chicken skins, the steak salad, and the roasted cod. The fried chicken skins, were just weird. I love things fried, and I love chicken skin, but the combination just was a little gross and tasted as unhealthy as it sounds. Greg was not impressed with his salad, as the steak was cooked wrong, and the salad didn't look fresh. My cod was also odd. It was soggy, chewy, and the thing that bothered me the most was that the garlic bread was under all the chutney/spinach, so was completely soaked and soggy. I ended up asking for more, and it was fantastic, but it just didn't make sense to be served dripping in fish juice. Given my high hopes, I was dissapointed. However, knowing that this disagrees with most others experiences, I am willing to come back again, however, I know that it will have to be a night Gster is not with me as he was not impressed! I've had almost every item off the menu here and they're all great. Standouts are the house burger, the surf & turf tacos, and the bacon Brussels sprouts side. The "bar snacks" menu is also a nice option for cheap munchies to go along with your drink, and not something you see very often. Brunch here is also great, the chicken & waffles and steak & eggs are both very good and at a nice price. Really cool setting and very friendly service, the servers and bartenders are all great. Great new place in this strip of non-tourist oriented restaurants on Broadway. I did not have any of the entrees because I was not super hungry and wanted to try several dishes. Mussels were outstanding - great broth. Very good Pear and Grilled Romaine salad with a tangy vinaigrette, healthy amounts of walnuts and bleu cheese. The chocolate chip cookie in a skillet with bacon and vanilla ice cream is decadent - best for two unless you're really hungry or like large portions. Brussel Sprouts need a little work, bacon was nicely done, but sprouts needed to be either crispier or softer. Cool art and pleasant ambiance. Cool new spot in a more chill, locals-centric part of Newport. Down by the water gets a little nuts, so coming up to Broadway is a bit more relaxing, but by no means boring. We sat at the bar around 630pm on a Friday and the place got more and more busy over the two hours we were there. They have a small draft list, but some good selections. I also had a zombie from their cocktail list which was tastalicious. We only had the pretzels from their bar snack menu but they were seriously delicious fresh buttery pretzels. I would go back here just for those! I'm pretty sure the owner was behind the bar. It's cool to see owner's that actually get their hands dirty. Best of luck! read more

Stopped in for a light lunch on Easter. Great find! My wife, daughter, and I shared the duck flat bread, short rib tacos, and calamari from the small plates. My wife and I had a pear salad and panzanella. Everything was flavorful. The flat bread had a roasted garlic spread that made it really interesting. The calamari had a light, crispy batter and came with a light citrus dipping sauce. Alternatively there was a more standard red sauce on the plate that tasted like crushed, fresh tomatoes. I enjoyed them with a touch of each. Lots of flavor going through the tacos. The pear salad had a lightly seared romaine lettuce with blue cheese and walnuts. Great texture and complementary flavors. My wife loved the panzanella. To wash it down I had the grapefruit shandy from Harpoon. The slightly sour shandy went with most of the food. Casual ambiance, friendly but not annoying staff, and music like Rusted Roots in the background made it a must come back experience. If they add more spice, a la North, into the menu flavor profile, I'll be happy to go 5 stars. read more
