The waiter ("Joe") is interesting. I'm about to eat so I'll wait to finish this review. So, today was our first day eating here and though most of the food tasted great, the service was horrible. A warm body was our server and I so wish that more people would take more stock in giving excellent service. The hostess also lacked great service. Maybe they are both very shy, and I get it if they are but it's tough to stick to a place where you won't be treated like their job and tip depends how well they treat customers. The pancakes tasted great. Our first pancakes came out cold. But we caught someone else and asked for two hot pancakes. I'd go back and give them another chance. So, I'll start by saying this review is really a 3.5 - Caleb's is clean and friendly with plenty of variety on their menu to make even the pickiest of eaters happy. Breakfast is sort of my jam, so I was excited to see a new place (new to me anyway) while driving over to visit my mother in South KC before the Coronavirus put a kibosh on my regular, weekend, dining out breakfast routine (and pretty much everything else for the foreseeable future). I had a hard time making a choice with so many great options on the menu. As proof, I ordered the Cowboy Skillet with my eggs basted instead of scrambled, and just out of pure indecisiveness, I also added a side biscuits and gravy. Let's not judge people - I always have to try the b&g. My 80+ mother selected the Kitchen Sink omelette and spent the next few minutes talking about how the price seemed a little high. Now, to be fair, I think the prices are pretty on par with most breakfast joints in town. It should also be noted that the last time my mom actually PAID for breakfast was probably 1995. So, there's that. As my mom was going through her weekly rundown of who she saw at church, the grocery store and Sam's Club, our food arrived to save the day. Mom's omelette looked great, and despite a few more comments about how much it was, she seemed to enjoy it. My skillet was tasty with my eggs perched on top of shredded hash browns, bacon, red peppers and cheesy goodness. It was a tad on the greasy side, but still good overall. The biscuits and gravy made a decent showing as well with fluffy biscuits baked to perfection. The gravy had plenty of sausage and a savory taste, but it was a little too thick and pasty for my liking. I felt it needed a little more milk. You know how when you go to DQ and they always turn the Blizzard upside down when they hand it to you to prove how thick it is? Yeah, I imagined my waitress being able to do that with my bowl of gravy. But, don't be fooled, I still ate every bite. Like I said, all in, Caleb's is good. This first visit just didn't have me doing the white man overbite dance at my table. However, I saw French toast on the menu, so Caleb will be on my dance card for at least one more jam. read more

When we walked in one of the waiters was arguing with hostess about not sitting people in his section, saying "how the f am I supposed to make any money". This was definitely not a great first impression. We were seated in the same waiters section and he did a good job serving us. My husband and I both got scramblers, which were ok but too dry for my liking - to each their own. My husband's English muffin looked perfect, though mine was pretty dark and had black edges - had to eat around it. The cokes were A+. It was an ok experience, but probably not somewhere I'm planning on going again. read more

I visited this establishment this morning . Waited almost 10 minutes before I even got a cup of coffee . Observed other guests coming in and were quickly greeted and waited on . After I place my order and received my food , it was cold and undercooked . The manager eventually did come over . Made an excuse about their food always comes out hot. South KC is starting to lay claim to some solid restaurants and for that I am thrilled. Caleb's is only a few minutes from where we live and I LOVE brunch. Let me start off by saying that the food is good, tasty even. No complaints when it comes to the food. It was the service that was ... well ... weird. As soon as our server came over, he immediately told us not to ask him questions about the food because everything should be answered on the menu. When he came back to take our order, he proved that he definitely mean that statement: My mother-in-law asked if he could recommend / narrow down the omelette selections for her. His response: "No, no no, I don't give recommendations, ever. I don't know what you like. I don't know your preferences. I don't know what you've had to eat today. I don't do recommendations." Um, okay? I really wanted fruit, but I'm allergic to a few. I asked him what was in the fruit bowl. A blank stare and "A fruit medley" was the response. Are there bananas? "No." Are there kiwis? "No" End of discussion. He moved on to taking the next person's order. It ended up coming with pineapple, grapes, honeydew, and cantaloupe which was fine. But, come on. "Fruit Medley" is different everywhere! Chic-Fil-A serves theirs with strawberries, apples, mandarin oranges, and blueberries. Little things were forgotten throughout the course of the meal: creamer for the coffee, straws for our water, the toast that came with my meal, and any sort of acknowledgment whenever we would say "thank you" for bringing us what we needed. We'll probably come back because of the convenient location, but hopefully get someone who is a bit more seasoned as a server. read more

I went there for the second time today. I was underwhelmed by the food. Nice, clean environment, but I really dislike when restaurants attempt to rush you out by offering boxes and attempting to bus the table when I'm still eating. I am a slow eater and usually eat out to not only get nutrition, but to visit with family or friends. I realize they are a busy establishment , but they still had empty tables and booths when we left. The food. Blueberry pancake had about 6 blueberries and part of one side was missing. Coffee was good, I was surprised that the coffee in the carafe was cold when I poured a second cup. The bathroom was nice and clean. Wow! What a great place! We stopped on for late breakfast/early lunch. Mom had crepes and I had the Triple Crown sandwich. Everything was simply delicious! We loved the cozy restaurant. It was peaceful and beautifully decorated. We had great service (Dena). It would be hard not to order the same thing on my next visit because that sandwich was delicious, but there are so many other options to try. On Sunday 31 Mat at 11 am I arrived to meet friends before I returned to California after being in KC for a week. I had my little well behaved dog with me. He is not a barker... a Shitzthu ... I saw that there was outside seating from going by to a friends house on a previous day. So thought great outdoor seating and my dog Biscuit would be able to sit on the patio. Well Caleb's does not allow dogs on the patio even. So 6 people for breakfast turned away. We walked down to Crows the Coffee Shop and no problem to sit outside with my pet. Seems all is needed to get a permit from the city. Guess Caleb's does not need the business... as a person visiting KC did not leave a position feeling and for someone who use to live in KC. I have been to other restaurants in KC with my pet and sat outside with no problem. Needless to say I will not go to Caleb's again when visiting in KC... read more

The bread was definitely high quality which makes for great toast. The potatoes were rather salty, almost to the point of too salty so didn't eat more than a few bites. Oof. I ordered 1/2 portion of biscuit and gravy (to try for comparison), and a Canadian bacon English muffin Eggs Benedict. So I had to add pepper and salt(!) to make the gravy have some sort of flavor - not just a pasty taste. The biscuit seemed like one out of a Wonderbread bag from the grocery, nothing going for it. Worst of all was the Hollandaise sauce, it was totally broken. I mean a homemade sauce that's obviously broken (overcooked egg yolks) shouldn't be served, period. The potatoes on the side I expected to be like typical breakfast chunks, but I got hasbrowns for some reason.
