I have never had a more stressful project completed on my property--and that includes numerous…read moreremodels. As a project manager myself, I can confidently say this was one of the most poorly managed projects I've ever experienced, especially due to the lack of communication and accountability from Anthony. We chose him based on our neighbor's recommendation to remove the grass in our front yard, replace it with California native plants, and apply for a rebate. We also saw all the 5-star comments and thought it would be an easy project. But the biggest reason we hired him was his promise to handle the rebate paperwork, as he had done for many of his clients. He explained the rebate process clearly and told us we'd be reimbursed for a significant portion of the costs. Once the water company approved the project, we scheduled the start date. Unfortunately, everything after that was disappointing. The crew changed multiple times during the five-day project, with each new crew unaware of what had already been done. This led to several frustrating issues: - We purchased an outdoor lighting set with two hubs to allow for future expansion. We explained this to the first crew, but the next crew didn't use the hubs and even lost them. After weeks of follow-ups, we got them back, but they did not offer to fix their mistake. Now we need to install them ourselves if we want to add additional lights. Also, the electrical line sits so close to the surface, I can see it when pulling weeds. - Most of the rocks were spread before the drip irrigation was properly installed, and the irrigation system was never tested beforehand, which resulted in numerous leaks and disconnections. They had to return multiple times to patch issues as they appeared. - They discovered a leak and said it would cost extra to fix. We agreed, but Anthony's manager later said it was already handled and never requested payment. Months later, Anthony mentioned "extras" we hadn't paid for, which I assume was this. The project was completed on December 20, 2024, but the issues and the rebate process dragged on for months. We had almost no contact from January 8th to March 20th, even with me asking for an update multiple times. Frustrated, I contacted the water company directly. They responded within two hours and told me that they had emailed Anthony on March 3 and 12 about requesting an extension since the deadline was March 2nd! He claimed he didn't receive those emails, which is fine, but it was still his responsibility to follow up with the rebate as he promised. He said he had submitted the documents by email, which the water company confirmed was the wrong method--everything had to go through their portal, and nothing had been uploaded. Only after I had the water company reach out to Anthony, he submitted the required documents on March 31. A week later, the water company requested more information, and it took him another three weeks to respond -only after he answered my call that I made from another number! He finally sent someone to take pictures, but we later learned a required pressure regulator filter had not been installed at all! So they installed it, and I took pictures to send to the water company. Anthony sent the requested invoice the same day. It was 52 days after the first deadline! And after many revisions, we got the approval for a post-inspection on May 8th. At that inspection, it turned out that they did not install the correct lines required by the rebate. They had to come back again, and their "fix" created even more leaks. I eventually had to schedule the final inspection myself--even though Anthony was supposed to--and only in October did the water company finally approve the project. Anthony never visited the site while work was in progress and came only once afterward, in April, to replace a part. He rarely returned messages, ignored all my calls, and never took responsibility for the many mistakes and miscommunications. We often felt like we were chasing him down for the services we had already paid thousands of dollars for--at times, it felt like we were begging. Rather than taking responsibility, Anthony made us feel like we were the problem when, in reality, we were simply asking for what we were promised. Near the end, he became openly hostile, even told me, "I hope you don't lose your rebate money." We eventually got our rebate, but ELEVEN months after completion. Even now, the irrigation still leaks, some plants have died, there are weeds coming out from everywhere, and one tree has tilted over. At this point, I'm too exhausted to ask them to fix anything, so we patch issues ourselves! This could have been a simple, enjoyable transformation of our front yard--but instead, it became a months-long ordeal filled with miscommunication, unprofessionalism, and avoidable problems. I would not recommend them to others.

They tried to clear the drains, but because they were so clogged, their equipment failed. Again, I was setting up the pumps during the rain storm. So, I researched and found Joel and Sons. They have literally everything contractors could possibly need from sand, P gravel, stone, rocks, brick, decorative concrete pavers, large landscape boulders, mortar, everything. I didn't need much, as my planter is only about 7' by 2' max, and I was afraid that maybe they didn't do small sales - but they did and I was able to fill 2 5 gal buckets when what I needed :) I was able to find small/ medium white rocks and also brown lava rocks. My wife and I have a new-build that required additional landscaping of our backyard. We eventually decided to go with California Outdoor Living after reading all their positive reviews on yelp. In addition their quote was very competitive if not the best when looking at other contractors. We already had a design in mind for JC which made the process very quick. Although there was some misunderstanding with the design and drains throughout the process, JC was always responsive with his texts and quick to make adjustments. The moment we got our design approved by our HOA, the construction happened VERY FAST. We emailed California Outdoor living on a Wednesday evening of our approval. The very next day (Thursday), JC arrived to go over the outline. I do appreciate how fast things were done, but it was almost to a fault at times. They were ready to go by the next day but my wife and I didn't feel like we had discussed the plan and execution thoroughly enough. On Friday the construction workers were already digging out our backyard. They spoke only Spanish so communication was very difficult to ensure if our plan was executed appropriately. By Saturday all of the pavers were laid out. Construction was incredibly fast but because of that some details were lost in translation. We discussed with JC that we wanted an 11x14 ft paver island. However the final dimensions was 12.5 x 12.5 feet. We also wanted all the walls of our backyard to be lined with turf. However the paver border ran too close to one of the walls, that putting turf did not make sense. They only left 1 inch between the wall and the paver (see attached image). We appreciate how fast the work was done. The overall work was great BUT not exactly what we wanted. We felt rushed with the whole construction process. However everything was done in less than a week which was incredible! In addition, once the turf was laid out JC noted that window reflections from both our neighbors and our own windows would cause damage to the turf. He informed us this can happen sometimes. Going back to rushing things and not being thorough, we wished JC took the time to look at our backyard and factor in this possibility. If we had known the reflections could damage this area we would have changed our turf design. At the end of the day they are just executing our design, but it's these minor things that left us feeling like our backyard could have been better. However we are still very thrilled with the overall speed and communication done throughout the process! Would still recommend this company. But these small critiques are definitely something to keep in mind for future clients.

I would not recommend this company. Their lack of attention to detail made the entire experience…read moreunpleasant. The drainage tube was installed with the slope going the wrong direction, and the walls were not properly covered before the concrete was poured, leaving concrete splatter all over the side walls. The concrete also cracked less than three days after it was poured. It was poured on Monday morning, and on Wednesday the artificial turf guy was using a large plate compactor right next to the two-day-old concrete. I believe the vibration from that equipment contributed to the cracking. When I spoke with JC about the issue, he told me that concrete will crack sooner or later and that is why they do not warranty cracks. Concrete was poured directly on top of the soil, no gravel was brought first. While I understand that concrete can crack over time, I did not expect it to crack before I had even made my final payment. Despite my disappointment, I paid the remaining balance. After that, I never received any follow-up confirmation that the payment was received , or even a simple thank you.

Oscar was very easy to work with as we described our needs and he came up with great designs that took very little adjustments to get exactly what we had envisioned. Oscar took us to several nurseries to select plants that would compliment the project. Victor took care of the demo and construction side of the project and was he amazing! The crew shows up on time and the site is thoroughly cleaned up each day. Communication was awesome, if we had any questions about products or how things were being laid out Victor answered them right away. As the project went along if Victor thought something might look better a certain way he would ask us what we thought before proceeding. Victor's crew were very courteous and professional at all times! When the project was completed we received a plant care and maintenance list that was very detailed allowing us to take proper care of the plants. We highly recommend Caliscapes OC. We did not have a concrete idea of what we wanted at first but Oscar was great with helping us plan by guiding us and asking about how we wanted to use our space. He also created documents to submit to our HOA for approval, and he was able to make changes quickly when needed. Victor and the crew were on time, efficient, and timely with the work. It was greatly appreciated that everything was washed down and cleaned by the crew at the end of each day. They were also able to make quick adjustments when our neighbor had some concerns with the hedges we wanted to plant. The scope of the work included adding a concrete pad, extending our concrete patio, planting privacy hedges with drainage and auto watering system, installing artificial grass with paver walkways, and adding pebbles along the exterior wall of our house. Since we have a soft watering system, we also had them install a separate line from the main. Overall, Caliscapes OC was professional, friendly, and accommodating. We even had one of the hedge plants not doing well. We reached out to Caliscapes OC to advise us on how to revive it, and they said they would replace it. We had a good experience and would recommend!
