This place, which is located in an old KFC, is one in a local chain of restaurant. I've driven by it a gazillion time I never noticed whether there were a lot of people. Today I learned that this place a ton of business. There were cars in the Drive-Thru Lane and a constant stream of people coming in to eat and pick up to-go orders. That says a lot. The small dining room has a chili pepper print on most walls. On one wall is the history of this restaurant--very interesting! The are several tables, and a self serve soda machine. The guy at the register was super helpful, and gave us have half menus which have more items than the menu board. I was so shocked at the life prices here--definitely a great deal. I ordered the Taco plate, which comes with three street tacos, rice and beans for only $7.99. you can add a soda for $1. So affordable! My son got a Cali Burrito, and it was as big as my forearm. HUGE! everything we had was delicious, even the two bottles of hot sauce (one red and one green). If you haven't tried this place, I highly recommend it. I ordered a burrito and two tacos at the drive thru. Vianey, the store manager, took my order. When I picked up my order at the pickup window I asked if I got two red and two green salsas. She demanded that I pay $1 for three extra salsas so I brought my burrito inside the restaurant to eat and requested the red and green bottle of salsa and she refused. I was told that I could not get the salsa for eat-in orders because I placed my order in the drive-thru. Afterwards I called the Chandler location and spoke to the manager, Maria. She told me that the owner was Fabian and the email address is calitacos01@gmail.com. She said she would try to contact the owner to give me a call. Meanwhile, I sent a complaint to the email address and a week later I was contacted by Vianey, pretending to be someone from the corporate office named Fatima after I emailed for a second time. My second email contained a copy of my receipt from a burrito I ordered from Backyard Taco on University Dr in Mesa (between Gilbert Rd and Mesa Dr) as well as a picture of their salsa bar. Not only do they offer unlimited salsa, you get free grilled onions and jalapeño peppers on the side. "Fatima" (really Vianey) proceeded to tell me how the burrito at Backyard Taco is more expensive. I told her that I will never return to Calitacos and that the customer service at Backyard Taco was priceless. The burritos are only $1 more expensive and they even offer "Burrito Monday's" where they discount their burritos. On top of that, they grill their meats over an open flame-fire grill so you get a real grill taste and they don't skimp on the meat. I hope nobody goes to this new restaurant because it's being totally mis-managed. Even the manager (Maria) at their Chandler location said I should have received 2 red and 2 green salsas with my burrito when I went thru the drive thru. She even said that once I brought my food inside the restaurant I should have been given the bottles of salsa. Customer service at the Mesa location is atrocious and I will never return and recommend no one goes there. Backyard Taco is really close by and they have real fire-grilled Mexican food (see attached pictures, I'll post more). read more

This just opened where there used to be a KFC (good riddance). This place is so much better! I ordered the California burrito with a side order of rice. About 15 bucks, which was very fair considering the size of the burrito. The burrito contains carne asada, cheese, sour cream, guacamole, onions, cilantro, and fries. Definitely one of the best California burritos I've ever had. The meat was well seasoned, and all the ingredients seemed fresh. The salsas are very good, the red was my personal favorite. Had a really nice kick! The rice was good, just your standard Mexican rice. The only downside was the wait time for the food. I decided to try this place since I was craving tacos. They had a deal on Uber eats for buy 1 get 1 free 3 tacos which comes with rice and beans. I ordered Carne asada tacos and the Birria Tacos. I ordered The Birria crunchy tacos and the Consome/Broth to dip them. The portions and amount of meat they put in the tacos is good. As a conisouier of Birria I was excited to try theirs. The downside is the Birria meat used in the tacos and the Consome tasted like Tap/Faucet water. The taste just overpowered all of the other flavors and I couldnt get around it. The Carne asada tacos looked like ground beef. Idk if they used a different cut of meat but I'm used to traditional Flap steak or Skirt steak for Carne Asada. We were ar the stop light after picking up all the fixings to grill our own asada tacos for the Memorial Day weekend holiday when I saw this place after flipping a U turn we ended up in the drive thru with the other cars. Now I do have to admit the girls working the window were knocking out the orders to go. Where I'm hitting the review with my three stars was the asada the staple for both of these meals for $20 the Carne Asada was super dry on my tacos it was dry like dehydrated meat then you add two super dry tacos to put the meat into i honestly had a hard time swallowing the stuff even with avocado sauce on them. The beans and rice were super I enjoyed them alot. The Cali burrito my boyfriend found to be really greasy. Now I'm from California so I'm use to French fries being in a burrito but it was on the greasy side and considering how expensive it is to eat out now a days we didn't find it worth the peso. I can't even begin to explain the excitement I have that Cali tacos is now in Mesa! This is by far one of the most delicious taco spots you can have in AZ! Truly reminds me of California tacos, true authentic, Mexican tacos. I visited the Chandler location many times but had the honor to visit the grand opening of the Mesa location. Right away you are greeted with a DJ playing all the bomb cumbias and decorations everywhere! They had a special of two free tacos so I definitely took advantage of that promo but also had to have my favorite combo plate, 3 tacos with rice and beans. DONT SLEEP ON THE RICE AND BEANS! Also, the birria tacos are one of my absolute favorites from here. They also offer agua frescas and horchata along with fountain drinks. This is also a drive through location located on the south west corner of Main and Lindsay. The parking lot is a tad funky but there are tons of parking! The wife and I drove by and saw that this location changed from a horrible chicken place to Calitacos. We talked about it for about a week or so then finally went in. They have a $7.99 combo plate with 3 tacos, rice and beans. I got carnitas, Al pastor and cabeza. The wife got carnitas and pastor. I was extremely happy. The meats were very tender, rice was fluffy and beans tasted fresh. So, the second trip I got a burrito. Very big. Had the pastor. Half way through, much to my surprise, I found bacon bits and French fries. This place, unlike other taco places we've gone to gives limes. I am a fan of fresh limes squeezed in the tacos. I rarely write and leave a review but these guys have earned it. When this location first opened it was great and we really enjoyed coming here. But as more and more time has gone on it seems almost every aspect has gone downhill. The drive thru wait times are ridiculous. When there are two cars ahead of you it should not take 25 minutes to get your food and the drive thru should be faster than going in and sitting down. And after waiting more than 20 minutes your order should be more than correct but that is not the case. I'd say we visit Calitacos at least a few times a week and in all the times we've been there I would say our order has been wrong or something is missing at least 50% of the time. Once we ordered two sopes and they only gave us one. We only noticed once we got home so we had to go all the way back to get the food we paid for and not even an apology or offer of a free item for the inconvenience. Also 50% of the time the staff have an unnecessary attitude especially when we bring up something they did wrong. They make it seem like it's our fault. We check our order before we even leave the drive thru. But today was the last straw. We ordered the taco combo and two sopes. We got to the end of the drive thru and checked our bag, I had asked for no guac on my tacos and lo and behold there was guac on them even after the lady repeated back to me no guac. It was annoying but wasn't the end of the world so we continued home and that's when I opened it once more and got a better look. That's when I saw the bug in my rice(pictured) I immediately lost my appetite, and frustrated I drove all the way back. Not a single apology from anyone at the restaurant just sealed the deal for us. Sadly we will not be returning to Calitacos. Their only consistency is inconsistency. Today, I went to place an order and was told my coupon was no longer accepted even though there was no expiration date on the coupon. Attached are photos of the front and back of the coupon. I come her a couple times a week and initially during opening they were really good, but I'm unable to trust what they give me after tonight. The last time I ordered was through Door Dash. I got the 3 street tacos, rice, beans and drink for $7.99. I placed an order for 2 of the same thing, and both were supposed to be carnitas. I got them and they were steak instead. That would have been OK, though not what we ordered, but the meat was so over cooked literally to the point of being burnt they were difficult to even chew. It was burnt, dry, and nasty. I let that go. Tonight I go through the drive thru, order the same thing I always do...3 street tacos with carnitas, no guacamole, or cilantro, onions only with rice, beans, a drink and an extra rice and beans for a friend. I get it home and it's got cilantro and guacamole all over it and smothered in onions. I'M ALLERGIC TO CILANTRO. I paid over $17 for some rice and over salted watery beans because I couldn't eat the tacos. This is not the only two times my food has been wrong since opening this location. It's bad enough you have to wait in a line of 2-3 people in front of you for 15+ minutes, but I've had to deal with rude cashiers as well. Paying that kind of money and still not getting what I ordered just isn't the place I want to continue to patron.
