We went to Caliente's and ordered the chips and queso for $6.50, 2 pork tacos for 12.25 and shrimp tacos for 12.95. The food is fresh and it looks like everything is prepared after you order. Sometimes though I feel like their food is a tiny bit bland. Also the portion sizes are on the smaller size although that probably is better so there is no overeating. We went there for lunch today because of the reviews. We don't live in Houston and wanted some really good Tex mex. First of all, this place is NOT Tex mex. It is more Like California style Mexican food. I am a Texan born and raised. Tex mex is my favorite kind of food. This place is not Tex mex at all. The salsa was awful and served warm. Weird. The queso hardly had any flavor and cost $11.50 for a small cup! I got the Caliente enchiladas and my husband got the Texas chili enchiladas. Neither one of us ate but a few bites of our food. It was by far the worst Mexican food I have ever had. It was not only the worst Mexican food I have ever had but some of the worst food I have ever had. I am not sure why this place has good reviews or why people go there. We left wishing we would not have had to pay for such bad food and wishing we could have a do overand go somewhere else. I wish we could have a refund. Yuck! I am also not sure why this place is called Caliente because nothing has any spice to it. A friend and I went to Caliente's last month and I think it's about time I talk about this mind-blowing experience. We were practically gallivanting around the Houston area in search of Mexican food because we were absolutely craving it (and blame me if this is a millennial thing, but we were scouting out restaurants with really high reviews) and we finally landed here after some long soul searching. When we entered, I started to become a little skeptic because it was rather empty inside save another party and ourselves, yet....no one greeted us. The store looks clean and very modern and I believe there was a sign that said to seat ourselves, so we grab a table and wait about five minutes. At this point, I'm thinking since we (look) and are young adults perhaps the staff were hesitant to serve us. We're finally approached by an older gentleman (our waiter, whose name I did not catch) and he gets us started on our drinks and we look over our menus. Our selection of appetizer: empanadas. Before those arrive, a fresh and gloriously baked/fried? basket of chips arrive with salsa. This is the most addicting salsa ever. While I almost wish it were chunkier as opposed to smooth, the flavor is so perfectly mild and beautifully blended. We order enchilada plates, beef for myself, and crawfish for my best friend. Our waiter is polite, warms up to us perhaps, and compliments my freshly dyed hair. He brings out the empanadas at this point-piping hot, cue the drooling-and I audibly gasp at how perfect they look. Served with an avocado crema, this is NOT your typical empanada. Instead of the drier and flakier dough most are accustomed to, this one is fried and filled to the brim with your selection of stew-like goodness. Not even a second later, our food comes out and I am in literal heaven. Enchilada perfection on a plate with the most flavorful and seasoned cilantro rice as well as beans & cheese, I can't see what's NOT to love. The small talk with our waiter is pleasant and isn't incessant, checking up just enough times and never allowing our drinks to hit the bottom. I wouldn't say the price range is too far out there. For what you're paying, the quality and quantity is really all there. I was genuinely surprised there was so much meat and crawfish in either enchilada dishes. Caliente's does not skimp out on the portion and you can bet my wallet, stomach, and myself included were all extremely satisfied. With our skepticism from entering vanquished, we left on full bellies, and our drinks refilled in to-go cups. I went for dinner on a Sunday, the place was empty around 5 PM, and as soon as you walk in, you would think that you are going straight to the counter to order, just like Chipotle, yet, a waitress, meets you halfway and ask you to take your order before even reading the menu or the specials posted on the wall. I asked for an specific item the "Hugo Bowl", (no description) and the waitress asked me to go to the counter and order, then to go sit down to wait? I mean, very confusing. I was so lost just like the waitress. The "Hugo Bowl", nothing special. The cilantro rice under cooked, black beans over cooked, and the way the served the "bowl" on a tall plastic cup container, disappointing. The sauce was a house specialty that still has been craving it days later... they seem to be still working out some kinks as a new restaurant, but I really liked my food, the staff was very polite despite being somewhat overwhelmed (again some service kinks to work out but easily overlooked) and I will come back for more! We came here for breakfast on a Sunday morning, which is a bit limited but they have build your own breakfast tacos and breakfast quesadillas. I got 2 breakfast tacos - on one I put: ground beef, egg, potato, cheese, guacamole, cilantro, salsa, and pico de gallo. On the other I put: pork, queso fresco, tomatillo salsa, cilantro, fresh lime wedges, and pico de gallo. Needless to say, the tacos are HUGE. I also got a side of fresh fruit. Great balance of cheese, sauce, and seafoods. -Mix plate fajita was huge and flavorful -Beef fajita nachos were bland with weird brown bbq sauce. Honestly smitty, it's quite disturbing as a customer go to walk in to the restrooms to use them and this smell is just worse than the sewer outside underground, the man does not do any courtesy flushes when he's in the restroom I still do that area as long as I could stand it and heard nothing, I was taught that in military cuz military people don't put up with that $h!T! Really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it's just not gonna cut it. Their concept was confusing, food was not fresh (trust me, we felt it later), and their high prices were not justified by what was being served. We came with a Groupon and ordered the Nachos appetizer, Sour Cream Enchiladas, and the Beef Fajitas. Great toppings on the nachos but the chips were so thin that it was hard eat with. My first time to try this place was ordering to-go on a Tuesday after an especially horrible day. Tuesdays are very busy for them because of their awesome 4 for $30 special on fajitas which is what I ordered...I hadn't eaten in 24 hours so I ordered the special and decided to figure out who to share it with later lol. Travis took my order very quickly over the phone and said it would be ready in about 15-20 minutes so I popped on over there at about the 15 minute mark. Unfortunately they were trying to finish up a gigantic catering order so my food was not ready yet but I was acknowledged right away, they found my ticket and prepared the food as quickly as they could. Travis apologized several times throughout my wait - he definitely didn't want me to feel like I had just been forgotten. I would give Travis 5 stars! On to the food: The chips and salsa are excellent and addicting. The salsa tastes fresh and has a little kick to it and the chips are thin, crispy and perfect. I really loved the beef, for me it's reminiscent of Lupe which is my favorite beef fajita. The chicken was good but not nearly as memorable for me - next time I will request all beef. The container comes with roasted peppers and onions which were delicious. The tortillas are a little thicker than I prefer but they are fresh and tasty nonetheless. I also got some of their white queso and it's very good, especially mixed with some of their salsa and pico. Next time I get the to go order I'm going to ask for a big container of salsa. They give you two smaller containers by default but I put salsa on everything when chowing down on fajitas so I would definitely see if they'd give me more. If I were feeding a crowd I'd probably ask for more chips too because it's hard to stop eating them lol. Great place and great experience with the people as well. The first time we went i was not too impressed by the service here. The food was great but our server seemed so uninterested in serving us. I had my daughter and she met her pop pop for lunch here. Fast forward to the next week when my daughter had surgery that morning and all she wanted to do was see her pop pop. So we met for lunch here again. She was super cranky and cried alot. The server brianna she was so attentive, personable and patient. We sat outside as not to bother the other patrons but that didnt seem to hinder service. She brought out a little dough ball to keep my daughter entertained and brought her food first. I stopped the manager to tell him how great our server was and he sent out a tres leches for my daughter because she wasnt feeling well. Apparently their tres Leche is all she needed to stop being so cranky. We have had their seven layer dip and it was AMAZE BALLS. I would go back just for that alone. I have mixed feelings about my families experience tonight . Yes, parking is a problem( think we walked through two parking lots) , but once inside seating is plentiful. It was our first time and we needed to share that with the staff before a employee shared how the almost Chipotle food assembly line worked. His plate was much more flavorful than mine. My son ordered a taco kids meal . It was a large portion and he enjoyed it. However, I tasted his rice and found it hard and under cooked. Also, I usually don't allow sodas for our kids, but decided to order them "kids" sodas tonight. However , the tiny kids soda cost more than half their kids meal. My husband and I decided to try their Rita's. And I am a big Rita fan. But theirs just can't compete with other yummy Rita's in Houston. It's their grand opening, and I know they have quarks to work out .
