Great lunch at California Fish Grill. Parking is plenty, no line when we arrived but definitely when we left. We arrived a little after noon time and we both have never been here or any California Fish Grill and it was great. We had the Mahi, tomatoes, brown rice plate and a grilled cajun salmon salad. Both were fresh, had the perfect amount of seasoning and the portions were perfect for two adults. The restaurant was clean, not too loud, and plenty of seating from inside/ outside tables,booths and a bar top. They do serve alcoholic beverages that looked delicious, and have a self serve soda / tea area. Prices here are definitely reasonable and service was fast and friendly. I went in today, I ordered the dynamite shrimp and kids chicken tenders. The shrimp and rice were soggy. The shrimp had no flavor. They dumped a bunch of pico and had very little rice. The fries were soggy. Very disappointed. The food is normally good here. read more

If I can give this place no stars I would I've been coming here since it first opened the staff was friendly and the food was always fresh and hot well I went there last 2 times and it was horrible I just got out of the hospital I order food and the host forgot to submit my order the manager at first just wanted to remake my food but not take accountability for what his employee did I said what are you going to do to make things right here he gave me two complimentary entrees mind u I order 3 piece fish and chips 2 entrees and I went the other day the manager on duty Jasmin said I had to get a kids meal and regular entrees I felt like that was wrong for her when I told her I paid for 2 adult meals she thought since I had my son I would need to get him a kids meal also she has the worst attitude the whole staff does they talk about you and all laugh about the customers definitely will not be going back when I asked for corporate number she gave me another number that was very rude.. Disappointing. My wife and I have been coming here since it opened. Unfortunately, it seems to be going downhill. Tonight we didn't feel like cooking, so we decided to come here. It took almost 40 minutes to get our food. I had to send part of the order back because it was cold. I asked about our order after over 30 minutes and I was told that they were still making it. I had to tell the guy that I was pretty sure it was under the heating lamp with about 12 other orders, he looked, realized it was and then handed it to me. Again, it was cold, but at least the fish was burnt on one side! When I went to get my wife and I some ice tea, the tea was empty. An Interesting Concept!! This was my first experience with California Fish Grill. I was looking for a new place to eat in the Rancho/Ontario area after I had been to so many places to eat in that area. I decided to venture out a bit and googled some local seafood places. California Fish Grill caught my eye as their mantra was to provide sustainable and responsibly sourced seafood. No-brainer huh? So off I went and discovered it was in a shopping area/mall type location. Parking was easy as cars were coming and going from the parking lot. Once inside I noticed that this wasn't your typical sit-down restaurant. There is a big sign waiting for you when you walk in so lift your head up and heed the big sign. The sign contains all of the offerings that you can get including starters, salads, sides, Grilled Fish, Featured fish....well you get the picture, you order from the sign. Want some advice?? Look online before you go, as there was a crowd of guests in front of who couldn't make up their minds. Luckily for me after standing line for about ten minutes I had plenty of time to decide what I was going to have. Since I was looking for something on the lighter side ( after having Famous Daves for lunch ) I choose the light and refreshing Ahi Poke which is sashimi-grade Ahi ( that's right its raw folks), tossed in a poke dressing, topped with a cilantro cream drizzle and served with house-made tortilla chips. This starter could have been a meal, so I suggest sharing it. This is a light, refreshing and very well prepared dish. The Ahi was fresh and the chips were warm even after a few bites of the Ahi. Next up was the main course, since I was looking for something different so I went with the Barramundi. Barramundi is a tender white fish with firm flakes and a mild flavour and found in the waters off of Vietnam. This was my first time having this fish. To finish off the plate, I added Fire Roasted Corn, Asparagus and a Cajun Style sauce. This was a great selection as the fish was amazingly tender but still cooked right through, the cajun sauce has a little kick to it but it didn't overpower the fish. The fish had a nice flavour to it and it was fresh. I washed it all down with a Red Wine Barrel Aged Red Trolley, an Irish style Red Ale from the Karl Strauss Brewing Company. Just had dinner here. Would like to give 2 1/2 stars, but that's not an option. Ordered the grilled shrimp and avocado salad. I expected a nice amount of avocado, but all I got was a small blob in the middle, maybe a half dollar coin size. (Hard to see, but it's there in the middle, cut in half). When I asked the manager if that was normal, she said yes and that I could buy extra! To give credit, there was a nice amount of shrimp, but they were quite spicy (not mentioned on the menu). Food was cold, tried to eat it but fish is not very tasty when it's cold unless it's sushi. Zucchini was also cold. I advised an employee who at the mgr's direction asked me to bring her my plate up to the pick up area. WHAT??? She finally got the message and came to the table and picked up my plate. About 10-12mins later I approached the same person and asked her to please package the food to go as I had lost my appetite. I'm not an expert on Dept. Of Health practices but it seems to me that the plate should not have gone back into the kitchen after it's been served. They simply reheated my food and proceeded to put it on a plate. We eat at CFG, Upland often and have always enjoyed their food. However as of late 2-3mos that "it's hit or miss" with them. Very well flavored and plenty to fill you up. Fish n chips... sub the chips for Brussel sprouts (extra cost), and grilled zucchini. Fish was great and big... fed 2 people. The bad(ish): Keto bowl with grilled shrimp. This is just a salad with shrimp and green goddess dressing. Very good flavor and the dressing is one of the best I've had. I only say bad-ish....cause I kinda expected more for a keto dish. Maybe put it on a bed of riced cauliflower. As it sits its a salad...not a bowl. The ulgy: Calamari starter... got 2 of them. What a joke. By far the saddest thing I have ever received...ever. look at the pictures. Yes, they tasted as bad as the look. Do not waste your money on these. I love been a fan of California Fish Grill and their garlic butter sauce since I first discovered them in OC. I would frequent their Irvine location back in college since they were always a delicious, affordable and potentially healthy enough option. So excited to see California Fish Grill expand to Upland. I swear Upland has so many more options these days. I had lunch plans with my cousin and she has been really healthy these days so we opt for California Fish Grill since they have healthy options for her, but still the option for me to over indulge in that addicting garlic butter sauce. The grilled specialties are a good deal. They come with your choice of seafood protein, a style of seasoning/sauce, a slice of bread untoasted and 2 sides. Fancier sides available if you would like to upgrade. My cousin had the Talapia ($9.49) with grilled zucchini. I had the Barramundi aka Sea Bass ($11.99) garlic butter preparations with rice and grilled zucchini. While waiting for our food, we went and got sauces and seasonings like lemon and cilantro at their sauce bar. Seating is self seating and you are given a pager that vibrates when your order is ready. Utensils are given with your food tray and plenty of napkins are available at each table. My cousin and I both enjoyed our choices of fish. She was being super healthy so I didn't want to tempt her but this Garlic Butter sauce is PHENOMENAL!! I can eat it with anything. The fish was very moist and had a nice amount of its' own fattyness. I am glad I got the zucchini to feel somewhat healthy but I really like the rice with all of the garlic butter sauce. I can probably eat that rice with the garlic butter sauce alone but that sounds dangerous. I don't love chains but California Fish Grill embodies the qualities I enjoy. Recently I tried the Scallops with Cajun/Garlic Butter and that's gonna be added to my usual list! My favorite side here is the Brussels Sprouts. The balsamic glaze and the way they're cooked is so addicting. My favorite thing about the Battered Shrimp and Battered Fish Tacos are the toppings! I love that they put Pickled Onions on them and the sauce is great as well! Tons of flavor. The Dynamite Shrimp Bowl has a good kick to it and they don't skimp out on the amount of Shrimps you get. This place can be pricy but for the amount of food you get + it's seafood it's definitely worth the price! I tried the Scallops the last time I came here and I loved it. The timing they give me for pick-up is always on point and the system they have going for pick-up is easy as well. The last time I went to pick up food I believe they have patio seating right now but indoor dining is still not allowed.
