We chose California Grill & Bar for my mom's memorial reception on 04/25/2028 because it was conveniently located across the street from the mortuary. The manager, Mr. Rolando, has the biggest heart. He was truly a blessing to us, an angel sent from heaven. We only inquired about the venue five days before the event since we had to wait for the memorial date and time to be finalized. Mr. Rolando went above and beyond to accommodate us. He even canceled a music event they had already organized for that Saturday and gave us the entire patio for our private gathering. The food was amazing. We ordered the grilled salmon, London broil beef, rice pilaf, salad, bread, and strawberry lemonade for $35 per person for 80 pax. The staff were top-notch and made sure there was always enough food for everyone. Everything went smoothly. My mom and I have lunch here often, especially after going to the movies, and today we brought our grandson with us. The food is always top-notch, the service is usually excellent, and the atmosphere is upbeat and welcoming. Unfortunately, today's visit was not a great experience. I won't mention names because this isn't about calling anyone out--it's about providing constructive feedback. Our server lacked attentiveness throughout our meal. We waited about 12 minutes for drink refills, and he never once checked in to see how we were doing or if we needed anything. We were each given only one napkin, and I ended up giving mine to my grandson after his fell off his lap. It was also clear that our server was struggling. When he finally brought our refills, he had several drinks on a tray. He set ours down, delivered one drink to the table next to us, and then stopped to take another table's order--all while leaving two iced teas sitting on his tray that belonged to another guest. I watched that guest eventually get up, take the drinks off the tray, and bring them back to their own table. So it wasn't just our table that experienced a lack of attention. In situations like this, it's okay to ask for help. A food runner or a shift leader could have stepped in to help keep guests taken care of. By the time we left, our table still had six glasses and three empty plates sitting on it. There had been no pre-busing throughout the meal. I wanted to share this because we genuinely enjoy dining here and will continue to come back. We made Mother's Day reservations for 6 a week in advance but that didn't matter. We still waited 55 minutes for our table. When they finally did seat us, they literally seated our party of 6 in separate booths.. 3 and 3. What the heck. I made a stink considering it's our last Mother's Day together as a family for a while as my Mom moves to NC this year. They then seated us in the patio together where we then waited 35 minutes to order our food. We then literally waited an hour and 25 minutes for our food to come out. My poor Mom who's diabetic and so patient needed some kind of sustenance in her. I asked for something to hold her over and the waiter did bring a blueberry muffin. When the food finally came, my poor starving niece had a hair in her pancakes and grossly undercooked bacon. The rest of our food was lukewarm and not as good as usual. Good.. but not as good as usual. We asked for the manager multiple times, who apparently also doubled as the bartender.. she never came and our waiter finally told us if we wanted to speak to her we'd have to go see her inside. Our waiter was nice throughout, and I did feel bad for much of the staff including the hostess who bore the brunt of so many frustrated patrons due to the absolutely horrible planning on the manager's part. First of all the food was good and I think the menu is well thought out. The service was awful. If you are having a party on the patio hire more staff. This is truly on management. One guy there with a cast on his wrist was doing everything! The 2 young women were barely managing their tables. These two older guys stood there. I discovered this place at a Yelp event in Long Beach and thought that their pasta they served was absolutely phenomenal, so I looked through my bag of goodies and found a coupon there for $10 off and went. When I got there, I ordered the jalapeño tequila pasta I had at the Yelp event again and it was just as I remembered it. It had that nice kick from the jalapeños that blended perfectly with the creamy sauce and was absolutely irresistible. Definitely worth the drive from Los Angeles for that alone. They served us free and warm bread at the beginning, which was nice. Their tequila sampler included premium brands like Casamigos, Don Julio, Cassadores and more, and was only $34 for 4 two ounce shots. Quite a deal as that came out to about $8.50 a shot. The California skins, which are the potato skins with cheese, bacon and tomato on top were under $6 and absolutely a delight. It's almost impossible to find a place that makes twice baked potatoes, but these were so rich and creamy and I loved them as well. My friend got an ultimate burger, which was stacked with a burger patty and pastrami, which was really good as well. If I ate it alone, I would've said that it was a top quality burger, however when compared to the pasta and other dishes, it didn't hold up to the spotlight of those dishes. The sweet potato fries tasted exactly as you would expect for them to. This place has a fish tank at the front which is very calming and relaxing to watch. The staff is super attentive and nice. What a great little spot! They have a full bar and a great menu. I ordered the Chicken Marsala, which was delicious! It was a healthy portion for a lunch order and came with some cheese toast. My friend ordered the Newporter Chicken Sandwich and she liked it. The only thing that would have made her meal better would have been crunchier fries. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Had a long outdated reunion with my HS teacher here on a Saturday for lunch. Apparently, he's a regular there who loves their food and service. Waitstaff were gracious and did not rush us to order as we notified them that we were going to be hanging out there for a while so they often came around to refill their coffees. Although it was busy, it was not loud so we were able to catch up easily. I ordered the CA omelet with home fries, sour dough bread and salsa. It had spinach, tomato, feta and it actually tasted healthy and not drenched in oil as other places like to do with their breakfast foods. I enjoyed it. The food here is really good, atmosphere was nice, and they had live music outside, only thing I didn't care for was the service, the service was not good. Waitress never once came to check on us, only time we interacted with her is when she took our order and brought us our our check. She was no where to be found and it wasn't even that busy. Oh boy was it a great price! The staff treated us like royalty with their amazing service and what seemed to be non-stop food. Whenever I am in the Whittier area, I always hit this place up and end up staying for appetizers, my meal, and their desserts! The ambience is upbeat and lively, and when you enter, they have this cute photo mirror thing that you can take pictures at. They recently renovated it, and it looks spectacular! I especially love the additional stalls in the bathroom. The stuff there is attentive, kind, and patient.
