Family owned and ran private party. We decided Tamales as a last minute New Years Eve treat! I found them here on yelp and they are actually pretty good. I was impressed with how light and fluffy the Masa was. There is definitely a secret to making good tamales. The consistency of the masa, the way they flavor it, how much they use and how they wrap it. Lupita's has it all dialed in, even down to the shape and size of each one. I went a little overboard with my order, with 4 dozen . One green pork, one red chicken, one chili cheese and a mix of sweet one. My favorite hands down the Green Pork was number one. The flavor was very traditional without the greasy masa. The pork was tender and savory without being salty. Second the red chicken, the chicken fell apart in your mouth without being over cooked and the masa had a hint of red chili, not spicy just right. Third the strawberry. Yes strawberry. It's just a flavored masa. But this was really good. Lastly the chili cheese. The chili cheese is usually my favorite but.... I like my chili and cheese tamal to be picante!!! Spicy these were not. You simply DO NOT cancel a Mexican's tamales order on Christmas Eve. That's just foul. Ordered 2 1/2 dozen tamales for Christmas Eve. On my way to pick them up at 3pm the day of, I get a text from them saying that they won't be able to fulfill my order due to a "family emergency." I tried calling them but they didn't pick up the phone. They just texted me that they have been on the phone all day dealing with all the other customers whose orders they weren't able to meet either. While family emergencies can indeed happen, this to me smelled like BS. I texted back asking why didn't they text everyone at once early on to give us a heads up and then call us individually so that: 1) we could make other arrangements while we still have time 2) not waste gas and time driving to them for nothing. When I told them that they have ruined my Christmas Eve dinner, they responded saying that I wasn't the only person whose order they didn't fulfill like that's supposed to make things better. I should've known there were going to be problems with this place because when I originally placed my order I got a call back not long after, and this other person had no clue what I had just ordered. There's serious lack of communication. Luckily La Doña Tamalería in Compton saved the day. I ordered these last year for my friendsgiving! All my friends loved them and kept asking where they were from. To this day they keep talking about them. Their favorite was the pineapple one. Last year I was able to call and get my order in the same day and in my opinion they were made super fast for a last minute order. I called we met up with him in pico Rivera he has red pork green pork and cheese , we Got a dozen of red pork tamales and two green pork tamales let me tell you they were excellent the green pork tamales to die for I didn't get the cheese but I'm pretty sure they are pretty good !!! Ordered 3 dozen for family gathering on Christmas Eve. Sent my husband to pick them up at our scheduled time. The address given wasn't to any business. He called and was given a different address. It was over an hour and a half and several more phone calls before he actually got the tamales. I can't understand why, if you ordered from a business, you wouldn't be picking up from there. None the less, we did get them, finally. As for the tamales themselves, the ones with green sauce had good flavor, spicy but good. The red sauce seemed to be lacking, missing something. Not much flavor. The masa to filling ratio was off. Masa was very thick and one half of each tamale had meat. For what I paid, I don't feel it was worth the price or headache trying to figure out where to pick them up. Previous reviews give a much different view of this business and on a day to day business they probably do have excellent food and service. I thought I would try these tamales out after seeing the rave reviews on Yelp, because my go to tamale place, Catalinas in Bellflower is closed. I bought one dz. red chile and beef and one dz. green chile and cheese. I tried them both and I honestly don't think they are all that. They were fresh, but totally lacking in flavor. My mom makes better tamales than these. Bland masa, and bland filling. The green chile had a nice kick, but the masa voided it. Don't believe the hype. Kudos to Lupita for working hard and being an entreprenuer, Capitalism at it's finest. If she tweaks her recipes for more flavor, especially the masa, it could really take off. read more
